Hand movement is fine BEFORE the pitch. You can do whatever you want before you start your swing, but once you start, your hands need to be in a spot where it will make your swing effective.
don't agree ... the hands drop and come back for some, not so much for others ... not a big deal as one is no better or worse than the other ... it is all about WHAT FEELS NATURAL TO EACH HITTER!!! ... Of course, the hands need to be quick and fast, no matter what! (something that as strong as he was, Tim Tebow's hands were FAR too slow to handle inside heat.)
@@sas6561 I agree with you. It's all about feel. I've learned about the shoulders some years ago and it has been a game changer for me. I use to worry about getting my hands out infront, while it did work, there just wasn't enough energy in my swing. But yes, you gotta feel what's best for you. I love the game of baseball.
@@djCaliKev If I had been magically Derek Jeter's only hitting coach ... I would have left everything exactly the same in his swing ... but I would have been relentless on him doing exercises that would have made his hands and wrists quicker. Same swing with a quicker bat!!!
Kinetic chain...of which the hands are the last, smallest and weakest link. The hands have two major functions: 1) Hold the bat (duh!) 2) Turn the barrel. Anyone who says the power comes from the hands has no idea what they're talking about...much like someone who believes a car goes fast because of the wheels. The hands get so much underserved credit because they are what people see in direct contact with the bat. A small amount of time studying human movement principles and people quickly realize the hands simply cannot be the major power source. Unfortunately there are much more coaches teaching hitters to, "drive the knob" with a pushy hands dominant philosophy than there are teaching a, "handless" swing.
No,no...the kinetic chain is right...but passive hands THROTTLES all the power the chain is generating. You're right, the hands generate very little power on their own...but they "deliver" the power the chain generates. Dead hands, "handless", dramatically reduces power. Golf nowadays teaches a "handless" swing. In truth, the hands are working but just don't turn over until after impact.
Hand/finger pressure fights centrifugal force, preventing the bat from flying out of your hands. Also, hand/finger pressure helps you to get the bat on pitch plane. DeRo didn't hit the way he says he did. Check out some clips of his swing on RUclips.
Power is one thing. More important is accuracy, ie actually hitting the ball in a way that will get you on base. Usually that's through a gap or over the infielders. And you don't need a lot of power for that, you need accuracy which the hands are a big part of as you can make little quick adjustments.
The point being missed--or ignored here--is that power comes from BOTH the hands and the body. One is not unused or ignored--they both have to be used to generate bat speed and power. Oh--and look more closely at the Kemp swing. He IS getting his hands started and moving pre swing.
Wrong.. If the hands are constantly moving, and the hands dont get in the hand slot.. It doesn't matter if the front foot is down.. This hands wont be loaded and ready consistently
Good segment. As a lefty, like the D. Strawberry analysis. Man, hope Shehadi gets paid to have to put up with that drama. Who is that frustrated Bert with the mispronunciation of "jif" comment?
This is how I was taught 30 years ago to keep your hand movement out of your swing and get the swing on a plane to get the bat to the ball! Where did it change after that? Not really sure that things have changed to be all that honest.
What has changed is that hitters are not using their hands to the ball but rather their back elbow to the ball. This is why the hands can be quiet and the hitter is able to use his whole body to hit now. Donaldson said it as much, but he didn’t define the back elbow. DeRosa still hasn’t figured it out yet. This is what is causing launch angles. Generating power from the back leg and elbow down the white line.
@@Garrett1240 No, it's because if hitters being undisciplined, pitching overall is terrible, the only thing is the radar gun is faster to more pitchers but overrated because they are jumping the gun for stat purposes, there are way too many pitchers are each tram so it's harder for a hitter to lick into a particular pitcher.
RJ Perfetto This was difficult to decipher. Pitchers are objectively better than they used to be. Breaking balls are breaking harder and faster; pitchers have more pitches in their repertoire; pitches have much more rotations per minute; and of course fast balls are much faster. Pitching is of course the reason why offensive numbers are down (except homers).
It's gif with a g sound because MySpace kids who learned how to code knew jpeg was a still image and gif wasn't. Hence the sound pronunciations. You have Jeffrey and Geoffrey which are both pronounced the same pretty much. Only difference was gif had a vowel as a second letter where jpeg has a consonant following making its pronunciation different almost like A-rod. Nobody pronounces is "air rudd" as it would seem on paper. And yeah ...English is weird
That's why there's more strike outs in baseball history. This shit is going to die soon. Not everyone is a home run hitter. Just do your job. You don't see closers trying to be a starter picher
Teach guys in the Show to swing like this, not 10 year olds. Why is nobody asking big leaguers how they were taught to swing at an early age? You're teaching kids terrible habits at an incredibly young age that they may never unlearn. Josh Donaldson is to blame.

Wow. Very insightful. Never thought about "keeping my hands out of it" when batting. Thanks for the tip.

no problem!
Awesome vid. This is what our hitting coach is teaching now. Seems counterintuitive but it works.
Straw was my favorite as kid. Lets Go Mets 2019.
He was for me too. But his swing had a loop to it. Not a typical now, high launch angle swing.

hedeki matsui was really good with that type of swing too.
They don’t think about there hands because it’s muscle memory so they get there timing down then do the swing that got them to the majors

great analysis
The MLB Network is helping this 55 y/o improve his swing. That's pretty darn cool.
A lot of people Forget that Matt was almost a 40-40 Guy that year✅
I love dero
Nice!
Why not have both hand movement AND rhythm?
Hands are a product of the turn.
having rhythm with your hands has nothing to do with weather you focus on the hands....
not throwing shoulders mark but using the GROUND .

Hands no hands doesn't matter, they don't make a big of a difference, they really matter when your swing get in plane with ball.
Its also a "MeMe"...lol
Imagine if the Dodgers actually kept their home grown talent. Not just Piazza and Kershaw. Beltre,Kemp,D.Gordon,P.Konerko,etc..

Can you find a way to eject umpires?Like if you agree.
No trying to be mean but you sound like an idiot
"if you pronounce it jif you're a terrible human being"
Does this new batting technique increase the strike out rate for hitters, also?
Sure it can or does because thus upper cut and launch angle. Oneis susceptible to the lower pitch now.
@@rjperfetto584 Probably has more to do with how much better pitching has become.
