At 3:17 you got it wrong because the book is important for the audience as a symbol. Taylor who escaped made that book with the last maze not having a way out (as mentioned by the other detective) which symbolizes the ending for the victims not havinga way out even after solving the mazes. And even for him who escaped but its still trapped.
OHHHH SHIIIT that’s why he’s obsessed with that maze, though he physically escaped he’s traumatized and mentally hasn’t escaped because he’s still trying to solve the unsolveable maze!!! Since the conditions for the release were to solve all the mazes. Good catch
The only thing that got me confuse is that the first rescued girl (joy, maybe) pointed out that Keller was there ( i thought Keller was the kidnapper😅) then i realise, she said that because Keller visited Hollys house just to talk to her about alex missing! Got me realy confuse there! But what a relief!

He says he's not Alex, and we learn that he is Barry, the kid that went missing in the same spot 26 years ago. My guess, the real Alex Jones is the one that died of cancer that Holly mentions

I wonder why alex took so long to give info to keller about his daughter even after getting beat up pretty bad. I guess he must be really scared of holly more than keller huh?
Alex’s inability to communicate is due to his lack of social development. He was kidnapped as a child, never got an education and as an adult has the IQ of a 10 year old. He doesn’t know how to interact with people, imagine he’s literally just a little uneducated child in an adult body. And I’m sure he was also very afraid of not just Keller but also afraid of his “aunt” Holly.

@@niko931 that's what real trauma looks like. Your brain shuts off. It's like trying to have a conversation while submerged in ice cold water. I wish I could watch this movie again for the first time...the acting and the visuals are top tier...and the ending is one of the bests Alex's creepiness in the beginning making us think he really did something...one thing I didn't understand was why Taylor shot himself and what alex meant when he said i waited there but he never came
I love the ending we got but what I thought would have been a beautiful ending is if Loki lifts the cover off of the pit and we see the bloody, trembling hand of Dover reaching out towards Loki. Then Loki grasps Dover’s hand, and we see his other hand slowly come down to place a handcuff on Dover, and the movie ends. In a poetic way, Loki knows that Dover was just a concerned and frightened dad, so he saves him, but his obsessive sense of Justice calls him to immediately place him under arrest and bring him to a hospital.
this is my favorite podcast! I remember watching this movie by myself and getting so hyped that I watched it two more times. The symbolism is so insane that every time you watch it you find more hidden messeges.
I’m still confused about the snakes. There’s a scene where Holly tells either Loki or Keller about how Alex has a fear of snakes. I have two theories. Theory one is that Bob Taylor is still under the control of Holly, that he is doing all that weird stuff to throw detectives off the scent for a while or to confuse them. The snakes in the boxes, could be to stop Alex from going in them and giving them away to the police, maybe he is not as trusted because of his mental age. Theory two, is that the snakes are clue to the audience to suggest that the people who kidnapped Bob Taylor, were in fact Holly and her husband, because of how Holly mentions Alex’s fear of snakes in an earlier scene, because if like you said, if Bob Taylor is still mentally stuck in the time he was kidnapped, then maybe he knew about Alex’s fear of snakes and included them in his antics - which suggests he was kidnapped whilst Alex was there, giving it away quite clearly.
the maze represents finding enlightenment in the center. many reigous symbols have this. the snake is symbolic for evil power and is representative of capturing innocence.
I’m like 90% sure bob taylor is just a copy cat fantasy killer. A mentally ill person living a fantasy of killing kids but not actually doing anything bad.
I just wish there was an alternate version of the ending where Kellar could speak with both Loki and his daughter! 2nd best movie of all time in my opinion to Shawshank Redemption. Crazy how this movie is still underrated to this day.
new fan of this movie. so glad i found this explanation. im not good at figuring things out in movies and this explanation tied everything together for me.
what didnt make sense to me is that everyone thought keller ran away, but his truck would have still been close to the aunts house right? even if she drove off with it after trapping keller it still could have been found right?
most likely she hid it in the woods. Besides, the detective went to her house only a couple of days later, so not enough time for the police to find it
There are multiple instances in the film where we never know how much time has passed. Most films like these include an hour or day counter to emphasize how much time has passed during an event, but this film intentionally leaves that out. Holly also could've simply dumped the truck deep in the forest or into a lake. After all, she was able to kidnap and bury kids in her front yard for years before anyone noticing. Also it's not like anyone knew that Dover was gonna be at Holly's house or anywhere near there
The police and CSI would have to be very crazy not to move that car in their first search and check under it - so there are holes in the plot regarding police work...
My only doubt is when holly sees Loki’s car approaching to her house, she decides to go inside and inject the baby slowly. Why? She should be ready to handle him right? What is the logic behind that?
Just so you know. If you’re ever shot and the bullet is still inside, you can leave it there. In fact you should leave it there. It’s way more dangerous to shove something dirty inside a wound and cause further damage.
But wouldn’t the cell phone of a missing person (keller) be going off like crazy in the sink? 🤔 and you gotta assume they searched the house before they started in the yard.
One of the greatest thrillers ever made. Just rewatched it and came to youtube. One thing I feel like needed to be explained was Alex/Barry strangling the dog
Because he's terrified. She's not really his aunt and kidnapped him as a child. He doesn't know how to communicate with people. No education. Imagine being kidnapped and held prisoner for 20 years, what that would do to your psyche.
This video answered most of my questions, especially those pertaining to bob taylors character. The ones that linger are: Was the priest a sex offender?? That feels obvious given the plot but I just don’t understand why the priest would have kidnapped/killed Holly’s husband. I also wondered about Loki’s twitch, but I love someone’s comment in here that explains it shows one of the many imperfections of all characters shown. I also wish I understood the overall motive behind the abductions. Besides s*xual ab*se I just don’t see what else there could have been, including the little puzzles.
Yes, the priest was a sex offender and Loki was checking in on him. Holly's husband was giving a confession to the Priest and he said that he would kidnap again, so the priest probably killed him to prevent more abductions. The motive for the abductions was their war with God because of how they lost their own son to cancer after being very religious. It was their way of getting back at God for losing their son.
Just adding to the great comment from drewton540 - yea she told Keller that her and her husband abduct kids to wage a war with God because of the affects it has on the family, “it turns them into demons on Earth”. Which, it definitely did turn Keller into his version of a demon. Basically, they did it to drive the families insane, aka multiplying the number of demons on Earth, as a way to get revenge on God.
@@Michelle-dg1qn "heavens prisoners" she is exerting power over their lifes and when they "go to heaven". So defying their normal destiny/gods plan by disrupting their life and then ending it when she sees fit. Getting back the control she lost when her son died from cancer/gods plan.
Two thing to me it was clear the "aunt" was apart of it cuz she said she was right there Keller attacked Alex but she wasn’t when you watch the scene and the other to me it was obvious Alex was the kid that was barry cuz the resemblance but I really didn’t have evidence besides that. The sad part was that when Alex said what he said to Keller I feel he said that to help him but Keller took it as a threat. Also it kinda crazy the symbolism and parallel the priest that killed the man and Keller torturing Alex had they were both men of god taking Justice into their own hands. Idk maybe you guys could find more detail but that was clear to me the comparison even them being turning to alcohol because of what they done.
Wow... just when I thought I mostly understood the film, you both really cleared some things up that I had wondered about, thinking they were loose ends, or brought to light certain connections I didn't notice until now. Thank you for this explanation!! I host a film podcast myself and tomorrow I will be recording an episode on the collaborations between Denis Villeneuve & Jake Gyllenhaal and this video really helped! I will definitely give a shout out to this podcast and will take your word that Prisoners is even better the second time... like you both acknowledged, it's an intense film so it will probably be a little while until my second watch 😂
SOMEONE please tell me that scene where the cop was following Keller when he got alcohol, but he didn’t go to the store and went away from the store …. WHERE WAS HE GOING?
Wait what? I thought Alex is supposed to be Taylor, and Taylor supposed to be Alex? That is the plot of the story. Remember when he being tortured by Keller in the bathroom he clearly said "im not Alex". And remember when Loki said to his friend that Taylor got abducted as a kid and being drug with LSD/ketamin until it messed up with his mind and don't even remember being abducted, doesn't that implified that is why he had 10 y/o IQ? Alex supposed to be Taylor, and Taylor supposed to be Alex. But i could be wrong?
Alex and Bob Taylor are different people, both kidnapped as children. Bob Taylor is the guy with all the snakes on his home and children’s clothes. Bob was released. Alex wasn’t. Completely different people
"Alex" is Barry, the son of the woman Loki interviews earlier on in the film. She watches a video of Barry on VHS. He was abducted 26 years prior and she never got any answers. Loki questions her because her son was abducted from the front yard of the abandoned house *where the RV was parked at the start of the movie* 😳😳😳. So "Alex" either consciously or subconsciously returned to his childhood home. Crazy right. He's the first child they abduct and he mentally stayed a child probably due to trauma. (I think Holly was lying about the snake incident, although he may actually have a fear of snakes as he is mentally still a child). He gets reunited with his mum at the end of the film. Taylor was a different person who was abducted as a child. He escaped after 3 weeks but due to being drugged he never remembered the identity of his abductors. He had all the snakes and children's clothes because I think he was either trying to work through or recreate his childhood trauma
The part that I don't get is who Alex is really. At one point Barry says "I'm not Alex. I was waiting for him. I just wanted to play." Which means he was waiting for Alex when he was abducted. Was Alex Holly's son or nephew or someone else entirely? Idk
I am a bit confused. Was the aunt actually kidnapping children, then torturing them, keeping them captive and eventually murdering them? What was the reason she was doing so? Please explain.
Holly and her (ex)husband were angry at God because they had lost their own son (due to cancer?) and were very religious. So they went crazy, wanted revenge... And they wanted people to lose faith and hurt. But I still dont understand why they drugged the children first and waited to kill them...
It was because her son died due to cancer at a very young age, and with her husband, they started to kidnap other children because of the pain, and they wanted to feel that pain for the other parents as well. I think you need to rewatch the movie.
It just doesn't make sense to me how Alex supposedly has the mental capabilities of a 10-year-old but is also able to think fast enough to break a window and defend himself with a piece of the glass when held captive? If that was really a man with a 10-year-old's mental age he would 1) not be brave enough to do such a thing and 2) not have developed the consequence or impact thinking that comes with such a decision, in my opinion. I remember seeing that scene and thinking "oh yeah, he's a lot brighter than he's letting on"
Yeah 'cause ten year olds have no idea about sharp objects or fighting back when they're being beaten down mercilessly, right? Being socially/mentally stunted has nothing to do with trying to fight back or being "brave"
My theory is that he has an alter-ego. His real self that aged and is a grown man, and the child state that was from when he was kidnapped. It comes out in some weird moments! To help him survive the torture and fear
Kellers doomsday paranoia mindset is what got him in that hole in the first place lmao Keller is a clown he had no trust in Loki and believed him incompetent when in reality Keller made the situation worse and actually ends up losing his family since he’s now going to prison
I’m still confused, how does Alex know about the maze in the scene where he said something about it to Keller? When he said “They’re in the maze”. And how does Bob Taylor’s mazes connect to Holly and her husbands mazes? We’re they in on it together ?
Just watched this movie with my daughter last night. Our eyes were glued to the screen the whole movie! I remember watching it when it first came out but forgot how good it was.
Help! Does anyone know what was the article in the computer, that Loki read, that was mentioning a prison guard who commited suicide and had a wife (called Mary?) and a teenage son? I am so confused 🤔🙈
That was an article about Kellers father. Kellers dad killed himself in that run down apartment building. This is supposed to symbolize the trauma that Keller was never able to process.
Thank you for this video. It genuinely helped me figure some stuff out. But sheesh did this movie give me so much anxiety, I was struggling trying to finish it and pick at every detail. 😭
There's something i still don't understand. Why did bob Taylor steal the girls' clothes and smeared them with pig blood and kept them in crates with snakes? Do the snakes symbolize something?? Was he fantasizing about being the abductor due to the trauma he faced as a kid when he was kidnapped by holly jones??
I think the drug she injected the kids with contained snake poison... yes, he was trying to be an abductor imitator somehow, and this was confirmed by the forensic to the detective
It symbolises an anti evil ritual. He thinks he's helping. And he keeps writing mazes because when he was kidnapped he was given a maze book and told if you solve all these mazes you'll be free but the mazes are all unsolvable so it drives him insane
yeah, well, if the girls were in the basement or in the pit, how did they see who is visiting the old woman? And if the children's hands and feet were not tied up, why didn't they took off tapes from the mouth?
Great video! I might be missing something obvious but how did the red whistle get into the pit in the first place? Do we assume Joy and Anna found the whistle before being abducted by Alex, and then Anna dropped it in the pit whilst Holly was hiding them from the police?
Remember when Loki comments “I see she found her red whistle” and mom says something like “she keeps insisting joy helped her find it but I think she’s confused”- so yes, they made it to the house & found the whistle before Alex took them.
You guys should play movie scenes while talking about the movie.... I can't imagine this format is going to cause people to tune in the entire time, when it's you guys watching the movie on a laptop while talking. But other than that, the breakdowns, sound and the way you can actually continue a breakdown of a movie, without dragging it on, is good and didn't once get boring. Would be a good podcast on Spotify, but just doesn't seem like a RUclips one. Sorry for the criticism though, I hope it doesn't come off as disrespectful
I watched this movie yesterday for the first time (I had no idea about it before) and omg best movie I ever watched but besides the point, I managed to work out who it was really early. I knew it wasn’t Alex, though I was confused when he said “they only cried when I left” I started reconsidering whether he was the abductor or not. But that statement he said makes sense at one point in the movie when you find out he was also abducted by Holly . I knew it wasn’t Taylor aswell. don’t know why, but I knew. The aunt wasn’t a suspect straight away I think that’s why I made me think it was her. Also I picked up every detail. Like the maze necklace on the corpse, and the priest talking about how the man killed 16 children, and how the aunt said her husband died it all just added up.
i think they were hinting at keller being former military. the basement being so orderly, the ammo crates, i think they were big hints. also his willingness to torture “alex” that would take a lot of resolve and if he had combat experiences that could explain the drive to what needed to be done, as well as the knowledge to stay alive down in the pit. you could also hint that he was an alcoholic due to ptsd but that could be reaching.
Or he’s just a driven man that preps for when things go awry. Also torturing someone you know is involved in your daughters kidnapping is nothing. Frankly I think they kept it soft so the movie didn’t become torture porn lol, cause in reality I think it would get much much worse.
@@imnotsmartbutimdumb torturing the dude wasn’t just “nothing” it had an impact on keller as well as the other characters in the story. most people wouldn’t have gone as far as he did. that’s literally one of the key points of the movie. has nothing to do with them “not making it torture porn” lmao.

Alex from this movie being casted as the ridler in the new batman movie was perfect casting
the fact that Keller even had a little torch on him is also about his preparedness. he would never find the whistle in the pitch black. how many people who don't have their phones, have a mini torch on them?

The crazy thing is that Alex knew about the maze and didn't said anything back in the time, only after Keller torture him he said it.

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ i was wondering why he never talked thanks for the info but i still dont know why he was so silent he didnt even while they were torturing him!
@@niko931 that's what real trauma looks like. Your brain shuts off. It's like trying to have a conversation while submerged in ice cold water. Alex's creepiness in the beginning making us think he really did something...one thing I didn't understand was why Taylor shot himself and what alex meant when he said i waited there but he never came
I love the ending we got but what I thought would have been a beautiful ending is if Loki lifts the cover off of the pit and we see the bloody, trembling hand of Dover reaching out towards Loki.
Thanks Byrdee!!!!! We love anything Denis Villenveue and Jake do
I’m still confused about the snakes.
I think it’s definitely a clue that he was kidnapped as a kid
I know they used snake venom in the poison.
it was used for poisoning the kids
the maze represents finding enlightenment in the center. many reigous symbols have this. the snake is symbolic for evil power and is representative of capturing innocence.
I’m like 90% sure bob taylor is just a copy cat fantasy killer. A mentally ill person living a fantasy of killing kids but not actually doing anything bad.
I just wish there was an alternate version of the ending where Kellar could speak with both Loki and his daughter!

what didnt make sense to me is that everyone thought keller ran away, but his truck would have still been close to the aunts house right? even if she drove off with it after trapping keller it still could have been found right?
most likely she hid it in the woods.
Loved it the first time I watched it, but loved it more after the second watch because I was able to pick up on a ton of details I had missed.
Same!
Great in-depth explanation/analysis guys!
Much appreciated!
My only doubt is when holly sees Loki’s car approaching to her house, she decides to go inside and inject the baby slowly. Why? She should be ready to handle him right? What is the logic behind that?
This movie blew my mind.
Same!

I doubt that phone works, I’m sure she ran water down there and even used the disposal
One of the greatest thrillers ever made. Just rewatched it and came to youtube. One thing I feel like needed to be explained was Alex/Barry strangling the dog
It makes him look suspicious
I just don't get why Alex didn't tell them about his aunt
Because he's terrified. She's not really his aunt and kidnapped him as a child. He doesn't know how to communicate with people. No education. Imagine being kidnapped and held prisoner for 20 years, what that would do to your psyche.
Thanks for clearing things up! I had a really hard time connecting the dots with a couple of things.
No problem!

It's open to interpretation.

Well done guys. You answered my questions I was searching for that others did not.
Thanks!
This video answered most of my questions, especially those pertaining to bob taylors character. The ones that linger are:
Was the priest a sex offender??
@@drewton540 Can you explain to me why she drugged and poison the kids, why wait to kill them?

Idk
@@susien9883 oh that’s a good theory. We just assumed that holly gave Barry a new name.

7:58 look at this photograph.
Does anybody know why Alex tried to choke the dog when keller was watching him?
He’s a messed up kid. He’s never had control his whole life as a prisoner. This is an opportunity to have control over another living being
I am a bit confused. Was the aunt actually kidnapping children, then torturing them, keeping them captive and eventually murdering them? What was the reason she was doing so? Please explain.
Because she’s crazy 🤣
Did you not watch the movie?
waging war with God
Holly and her (ex)husband were angry at God because they had lost their own son (due to cancer?) and were very religious. So they went crazy, wanted revenge... And they wanted people to lose faith and hurt.
But I still dont understand why they drugged the children first and waited to kill them...
It was because her son died due to cancer at a very young age, and with her husband, they started to kidnap other children because of the pain, and they wanted to feel that pain for the other parents as well. I think you need to rewatch the movie.
I just got this movie and watched it for the first time last week. then watched it again the other day. what an amazing fucking movie
🙌🙌
It really is.
I remember seeing that scene and thinking "oh yeah, he's a lot brighter than he's letting on"
Survival instincts no? Fight or flight
Yeah 'cause ten year olds have no idea about sharp objects or fighting back when they're being beaten down mercilessly, right? Being socially/mentally stunted has nothing to do with trying to fight back or being "brave"
AND how can he drive.... that is also kind of strange to me.
My theory is that he has an alter-ego. His real self that aged and is a grown man, and the child state that was from when he was kidnapped. It comes out in some weird moments! To help him survive the torture and fear
He likes kids. Lying for his mom.
I love this review. I needed it right after the movie. Xo.

Kellers doomsday paranoia mindset is what got him in that hole in the first place lmao Keller is a clown he had no trust in Loki and believed him incompetent when in reality Keller made the situation worse and actually ends up losing his family since he’s now going to prison
Keeler was a man. He was soft and was fd over it. Everyone's an enemy, h if that was how he acted he'd have got it single handedly.
I’m still confused, how does Alex know about the maze in the scene where he said something about it to Keller? When he said “They’re in the maze”. And how does Bob Taylor’s mazes connect to Holly and her husbands mazes? We’re they in on it together ?

Glad you liked it! 🤣
This film exposes flaws in Christianity..... Forgiveness is a choice..... forgiving people automatically is stupid
Why did the little girl say to keller that he covered their mouths? Was she confused by the rain jacket?
I need to know why the first first little girl who got rescued said ‘but you were there’ to the other girls dad in the hospital???????!!
Because Keller was in the house talking to the woman earlier
yeah, well, if the girls were in the basement or in the pit, how did they see who is visiting the old woman? And if the children's hands and feet were not tied up, why didn't they took off tapes from the mouth?
@@wilderness239 they were put in the house at that time, and they were drugged up

Great video! I might be missing something obvious but how did the red whistle get into the pit in the first place? Do we assume Joy and Anna found the whistle before being abducted by Alex, and then Anna dropped it in the pit whilst Holly was hiding them from the police?
So the girls had it when they were abducted and put in the pit!
Remember when Loki comments “I see she found her red whistle” and mom says something like “she keeps insisting joy helped her find it but I think she’s confused”- so yes, they made it to the house & found the whistle before Alex took them.
What a coincidence i just saw this movie today

You guys should play movie scenes while talking about the movie.... I can't imagine this format is going to cause people to tune in the entire time, when it's you guys watching the movie on a laptop while talking. Re watched this and I saw loads things I missed lol 😆
🙌🙌
the aunt didn’t say that her husband died .. She never knew he was dead, she only said he disappeared
i think they were hinting at keller being former military. the basement being so orderly, the ammo crates, i think they were big hints. also his willingness to torture “alex” that would take a lot of resolve and if he had combat experiences that could explain the drive to what needed to be done, as well as the knowledge to stay alive down in the pit. you could also hint that he was an alcoholic due to ptsd but that could be reaching.
Or he’s just a driven man that preps for when things go awry. Also torturing someone you know is involved in your daughters kidnapping is nothing. Frankly I think they kept it soft so the movie didn’t become torture porn lol, cause in reality I think it would get much much worse.
This could be veryyyy likely. Good catch fr
