You also may want to mention that Wings For Marie(part 1) and 10,000 Days(Wings part 2) should be reacted to together, not separate. Do a little research into Maynard's mother and the songs mostly relating to her, The Patient, Intermission/Jimmy, Judith by A Perfect Circle(one of Maynard's other bands) and Wings 1 and 2.
P.S. Hooker With a Penis is a must, the song, although absolutely filled with curse words, is not as dirty as it sounds, and is one of the most riotously funny and angry songs there ever was.

The "Shadow" is just what Carl Jung and others have called those parts of our psyche that we aren't aware of- generally "dark" aspects of ourselves that we have suppressed- desires and weaknesses we can't or won't face. Becoming aware of these shadows and integrating them into our conscious awareness is vital to becoming a whole person. That's just a quick, probably not entirely accurate, version of what the shadow signifies.

Rev. Maynard is Preaching his sermon. A Reverend of ethereal consciousness. Much Like Pink Floyd, Tools Music delves deeper into the psyche of the listener by way of the writer. There are Fans that only hear the music but not the message. This is the difference between Listening to a song and Hearing it. Tool is by far the most introspective band I patron and I listen daily. This song is the reason I got into Jungian psychology. Our persona is who we present to the world, that persona is driven by the next layer which is our ego. Underneath the ego is our Shadow. Our shadow is our darkest hurtful things we think about ourselves. All of our trauma bubbles up from our shadow into our ego and ultimately into our persona. We have to "soften up this old armor" and go deep into our shadow and work through that so our egos are not toxic and our persona isn't nasty.
He talks a lot of about the shadow in this song. From what I read on the song, he is also speaking about a time when we all process our shadows and step through our dark shit. When ALL of us do it and the change that could result.

    • @user-gl4qb2qk8d

46 + 2 refers to the next evolution of man, he talks about how one might reach through the untapped "shadow" portions of the psyche.
"Step into mt shadow" "46 & 2 is right ahead of me"

Ok.. Let me try and break down what Carl Jung, and I’d highly recommend his books, was talking about. He was simply saying that the Shadow is the part of you that you suppress, possibly willingly, and contains the genuine, and many times darker, aspects of yourself. Jung believed that by unlocking that subconscious part your mind, you could truly evolve. But you have to be willing to face those things, and trust me, it’s very terrifying to take that trip, to say the least. But to fully transform into your higher being, which would involve physical transformation as well, hence the extra pair of chromosomes, you have to honestly face who you truly are. Only then can you be complete and enlightened being. Yeah, trippy shit huh?? But I suspect Maynard is talking about something much deeper, and more personal than that. Gotta love Tool

It’s a terrifying trip to make like you said, but once you make the trip and reconcile it all it’s liberating. To understand and accept who you are wholly instead of fractured is a beautiful powerful thing.

A few things about this video specifically, and a bit of a quick rundown of the concept/theme of the song, and what the band Tool is about.
This is a fan made video that attempts to explain the concepts and theme of the song, by incorporating explanations of the ideas of Jung into the video. They just threw the info in between the actual lyrics, but it's not clearly separated out in a way that distinguishes the added information from the lyrics.
Tool is a band that loves to play around in this kind of headspace. Looking at the world and the people in it, and dig into the inner drives of people and humanity in general. I am a big Tool fan, so what follows is not a criticism on the band, just the concepts presented in the song. I still find the ideas presented interesting, if flawed, and I often appreciate the angle and perspective that Tool puts forth in their music. They sometimes sprinkle in obscure references to religion and concepts of spirituality into their songs, which help drive forth the actual meaning of the song, even if religion or spirituality isn't the main theme. Sometimes its only small parts for effect, other times like this song, it is a central theme. While other times the concepts in their songs can actually be more grounded and pragmatic in nature, maybe just presented in an odd or indirect manner... And maybe using the references mentioned prior to go about it... I am not ashamed to admit that I have had to look up some of the meanings of various words and phrases to understand what they were trying to convey. Example, they reference "indigo" in one of their songs, as a reference to generic religion and spirituality, without directly coming out and saying such.
Now onto the theme of the song.
The ideas of Jung are pseudoscientific bunk... His ideas came about in the early days of psychology and genetics.
The shadow is basically unconscious desires and motivations, that we may not know we have, that influence and drive our actions, and that we may project these desires on others, thinking they are the ones that really hold these thoughts.
I wouldn't say the ideas of the shadow and the conflicting aspects of the human mind are complete crap, but they are very early and simple ideas that are outdated. The human mind and consciousness are much more complex than the ideas of Jung or Freud describe, but their ideas do help simplify things for the lay person a bit. They are just not very accurate on the whole, only helping understand in a rudimentary way, that isn't always useful. It's the ideas around human genetics and evolution that is pure nonsense.
46 and 2 is about chromosomes, modern humans have 46 chromosomes. The ideas presented in this song basically boil down to ideas of higher level consciousness and spiritual awaking, basically becoming psychics that can communicate with the universe kind of stuff. The idea is that the number of chromosomes determine how advanced and transcendent humans would be. Early humans were primitive and violent, so they obviously had fewer chromosomes... once humans gain 2 more chromosomes (46 and 2) they will be able to become a higher form of life.
It's hippy dippy stoner spirituality dressed up in a lab coat. Born of poor understanding of early work in the science of genetics. There are worms with chromosomes that number in the hundreds... So if the ideas of Jung were true, these worms would basically be god like.
All that being said, the ideas are interesting to learn about, but not to take seriously. If the concepts help kickstart people into looking more closely at themselves and their place in the world, I have no objection... Just don't go taking bunk ideas to heart in the process.
And Tool is an amazing band, one of my favorite bands. Their music is pretty much always interesting on many levels.

The meanings of their lyrics are blanketed through other meanings wrapped with other meanings. Throw perceptions of other dumb founded dips*its you get what being read now. It’s all about the trip, the spiral. If the lyrics do find a similarity or strike some kind of experience that coincides with a part of your life or it “speaks to you” than the artist did their job.

There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything.
In Jungian psychology, the anima refers to personality traits regarded as feminine that are often repressed into the unconscious of males while the animus refers to traits regarded as masculine that are often repressed into the unconsciousness of females.
Although suppressed from conscious awareness, the anima/animus influences our behavior in powerful ways. In most individuals,it is projected onto people of the opposite sex and accounts for the experience of falling in love with someone we hardly know. As the unconscious pole of the self, the counter-ego represented by the anima/animus can also be a guide to one's own unconscious realm. It is often experienced as the guiding female (if you're male) or male (if you're female) presence in dreams.
    The Shadow:
In Carl Jung's personality theory, the ego represents the individual's sense of personal self. The sense of personal identity is purchased, however, at the expense of certain tendencies that are rejected as 'not-self'. According to Jung, these rejected traits come together as a kind of unconscious 'counter-ego' which he termed the shadow.
We may become unduly anxious or irritated when in an environment or around a person that in some way reminds us of repressed aspects of our self. If a person has rejected his or her own sex drive, for example, that person may feel irrational fear or anger around an overtly sexual individual. The shadow may appear as a person in one's dreams, usually as an individual of the same sex.
Of all the archetypes, the shadow is the most powerful and potentially the most dangerous. It represents everything about ourselves that we fear and despise.
    The meaning of 46 + 2:
According to Melchezedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids'. These grids extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns “Sacred Geometry”. Each species has its own grid, which supports life, and connects the consciousness of its particular species. Before any species can come into existance or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissoves.
A new grid was completed in 1989 - the 'christ-consciousness' grid. This grid will allow humans to evolve into our next version. We'll develop two additional chromosomes (which are really 'geometrical images' designed to resonate with our specific grid) for a total of 46 + 2.
The main change will be a shift to the "unity consciousness". Every cell in your body has its own consciousness and memory. You, the higher being that occupies your body, make the millions of different consciousnesses in your body work together as one being. How does this relate to this grid? Think of yourself as a cell and the grid as the higher being. We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity.
