Have owned a Rogue since late 2013. Zero problems. Driven it cross country and locally. Extremely comfortable for its size. Yes, could use some extra hp and the CVT gives a different feel but life is full of trade offs. As Alex points out space, convenience and interior design are commendable. A best buy by any standard. If only Nissan knew how to market their products better...
I have a 2010 and 2011 Rogue and have been impressed with their power in terms of acceleration, even scary at times how fast I can get them up to during passing. The cvt allows this, but yes at the same time imposes the sword of Damocles over one's head. total failure at any time incidentally.
PP the wife has a 2011, have performed drain and fill on the CVT couple times. It is very smooth immediately after, but quickly gets the “rubber band” feel again. So I don’t think it is a quality product, maybe the cooling isn’t sufficient, so the fluid degrade faster than they should. I own 2019 Rouge. Love the smooth ride, tech and safety features, fuel economy and space inside. Pricing is awesome. Its not the most well made and reliable out there compared to CR-V or RAV-4. Its not going to last 200K miles like the Toyota or Honda. But for the price you can't beat Rogue. Drive it and you will be surprised.
When you factor in repair costs, rental cars, stress and resale value you end up paying more owning a Nissan over a Toyota and Honda. I got CRAZY resale value on my 2007 RAV4 when I sold it. Zero unexpected maintenance on it over 13 years!
I’m glad to see another Rogue video. I’ve owned an AWD CR-V and I currently own an AWD CX-5. I’ve test driven the newer CR-V with the turbo. I actually preferred the 2.4 to the turbo, even with a CVT. I really didn’t think a Rogue would appeal to me but I happened to rent one and drove it from Miami to Tampa. Better than a test drive. I really got a feel for it. First of all, it’s big. Well, big for this segment. I’m well over six feet tall. I fit in my CX-5 with a moon roof, but not as comfortably as I’d like. The rental Rogue was considerably larger and more comfortable. Plenty of storage space too. And it actually has a spare, in case you were to need it. Second, it’s not slow. I thought for sure the old engine with a CVT, no turbo... I thought it would be a slug. But no. It’s quick. Only one passenger, me in the car but I had a lot of luggage as I was returning from an international trip. Once I got on the highway it actually felt fast. Like really. Like I got pulled over and the officer told me how fast I was going, how I was passing, how it took him a minute to reach me. Whoops! I won’t say how fast, but it didn’t feel like it. Like ‘it’s easy to get speeding ticket speed’ comes easy, if that makes sense. I was shocked. I made it home safe. Before turning In the rental, I filled the tank. While at the gas station, I popped the trunk and pulled out the owners manual trying to find out what new engine Nissan had in the Rogue. It was the same 2.5. I don’t like automatic transmissions in general and I can’t stand CVTs, but I have to admit I was very impressed. I think it was a front drive Rogue which effects performance. I’d prefer AWD just because we get heavy rain, flash flooding and an occasional ‘mandatory’ evacuation here in Tampa. I’m curious about the 2021 Rogue and the CR-V Hybrid but if I can get a huge discount on a 2020 Rogue later this year, I’m all over it. It’s big, comfortable, quick and it’s not bad looking. If you’re well over 6 feet tall and a lot heavier than you should be, it has to be on your list.
Mark DC I have respectfully disagree. There is no way the car feels fast. I’m sure it has enough power but you’re kidding yourself telling yourself it felt fast.
Matthew Sahd I drove the 2019 rental car for over 300 miles. I don’t know how you could disagree with how it felt, since you weren’t there. I did also mention that I was shocked. I didn’t compare it to a 370Z or a Supra. I compared it to my current CX-5 and my old CR-V. I’m the type of person Nissan wants to impress and two days in that particular rental car were surprisingly impressive. I may test drive another one and have a more expected experience but for whatever reason, the one I rented felt very quick and comfortable.

It's like everyone's conscious knows it's an awesome crossover with lots of space, huge windows , one of the best stadium style seats in the rear and so much more but nobody wants to speak out loud and rather talk how nice the other SUV's are
Jigar Khandhar I’m 6’4” so a appreciate the extra space. I was really surprised when I drove one though. I don’t know if I’ll end up buying one but I’m sure I’ll test drive one and see if I can save a few thousand.
The Rogue is not slow. It's got decent speed for an SUV! Besides, this vehicle is not meant to be raced around. Its a spacious SUV with good fuel economy, very good safety features and technology, at a low price. What more could you want?
The divide and hide function is useful too. Since I don't give a damn about speed and fitting ice chests and fishing rods (the passthrough is useful), this is one of the most likely candidates for my next car.
I have two Rogues, a 2019 SL and a 2017 SV. My family loves them both, zero problems. They both regularly get 34mpg on the highway, and still have tons of room.
I’m actually a big supporter of Nissan. I am also very aware that they have tons of quality issues, have definitely experienced a few myself, such as some parts of the interior plastics detaching or coming lose, the paint coming off of some buttons, and for some reason the corners of the front bumper seem to always come loose. I definitely don’t think Nissan makes the greatest products out there, however I commend them for the ability to still remain unique. They’re very comfortable, smooth to drive (in normal conditions), and stylish-the newer lineup has gotten quite attractive over the years and imo are some of the best looking vehicles out there. That includes the Rogue, it’s very good at what it’s for and clearly millions of people seem to think so. But if you keep in the back of your mind constantly that something will break down, then NO CAR will seem like a good option. It’s a mentality, not a destined possibility. Nevertheless, I believe Nissan makes good products, and it’s very obvious if you look through some of the changes they’ve made to their lineup that they are improving and will continue doing so, I don’t see a dying brand here.
I test drove a Rogue years ago and I was shocked how much I loved it. It felt way bigger on the inside (it is) and more versatile. Since then, I've become pickier with tech and CVTs, so I'm not as sure I'd get one, but I generally think the Rogue is a compelling choice.
I like the Rogue.. Driving the 2019 Base Model and it has all the features which I want for my daily driving. Apple car play, reverse camera, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert. I got my highest recorded miles per gallon when I was driving from Boston to NY - 38.3 and on highway driving in Eco mode with 65-70 miles speed I get average of 33 miles/gal. Leased it and the payments are 200$/ month. Pretty satisfied with the purchase. Black color one looks good too. Just ordered a 40$ wheel hub caps to replace the stock ones from Amazon and it transformed the look. Now is the right time to buy one as you will get a very good deal. Do negotiate it a lot when you go to the dealer. Hope it helps!!!
Like most customers I leased a 2017 Platinum due to massive discounting . I use mine as a winter driver ( Sports car driver in summer) . I expected to be ambivalent about the Rogue due to the mushy handling and CVT but the more I drove it the more I appreciated it for its comfort and space. I commute in heavy urban traffic so lack of power and handling isn't huge negative. I also noticed that the Rogue is taller than most competitors so actually roomier feeling and seats are better some of the most comfortable I've ever sat in, plus the Pro pilot is useful on long road trips. I ended up leasing another 2020 Platinum last year at another huge discount ( no wonder Nissan is in financial trouble) and may lease the next Gen Rogue if I like it. I could upgrade to a more expensive SUV but can't justify the extra cost again due to its primary use as a winter only vehicle.

@@Brew-doo I suspect a lot of people never change the transmission fluid. Which is, to borrow from Talking Heads, "same as it ever was." People in the '90s swore Ford and Chrysler automatics were junk because they died somewhere between 75k and 100k...but they conveniently forgot to mention they ignored the manufacturers' recommendation to get the transmission serviced every 15k or 30k. Or how many did I know who waited until their transmission started "acting up" to take them to a mechanic back in the day? By that time, it was usually too late, and smart mechanics would turn them away fearing a lawsuit. They often used an excuse something to the effect of, "If you change the fluid, it'll stir up the gunk in the transmission and kill it." I used to work for a company that had a fleet of Altima sedans during the early days of the CVT 2007-2010. They run them to around 120k then sell them, having never touched the transmission. Their second owners get a nasty surprise pretty soon after buying, I bet. My own anecdotal experience: I've put 131,xxx miles on a 2010 cube and it's running as good as the day we bought it at 10 miles. I do get the transmission serviced every 30k.
Nissan says to only inspect the cvt fluid. Not to change it ever unless it fails the inspection or severe usage. And honestly I paid $5000 less for my 19 Altima than say a Honda Accord. And I have AWD saving me $900 on snow tires every 3 years. So I'll have that $8k in the bank in the event at 150k miles the jatco fails and it costs $3500 to replace it out of pocket. I'll still be $1500+ 10 years of interest ahead of the game. I also really like the cvt getting great mileage and power. So prob saving another $1000+ on gas over 10 years. People seem to worry about the wrong things.
@@ABCD-eg5ky my owner's manual prescribes a transmission drain-and-fill every 60,000 miles under "normal service" or every 30,000 miles under 'severe service." I do it every 30,000. Other members of Nissan cube Owners Club who do the same have seen over 200,000 miles on their original CVTs.

@@ABCD-eg5ky my cube is a 2010. The drain-and-fill costs me $150. There's a more thorough service where they flush the transmission and replace its filter. I think that one's about $400. I'll probably have them do that one at my 150,000-mile service, which should come up about a year from now.
@@James-il3tq Funny you would say that. We also have a 2013 Rogue which has been trouble-free. Oil changes, filters and tires have been the only expenses. Both are AWD.

My 2 cents for the comparison: Rogue - If you are not car enthusiast, just need a roomy family CUV which is value for money! CX-5 - You are car enthusiast and ready to compromise on practicality like roominess and fuel economy. Rav4 & CR-V - Best of both worlds :)
CX-5 owner, and while the car handles well, and brakes well, the base 2.5NA is the weakest part, tuned for fuel economy, and not performance, combined with a droning sound under load. Turbo was not offered the year I bought mine.
Wife is trading from Cadillac ats into turbo cx5. I think it's all around the best in the segment. Fast, handles well, nice interior. It's just really solid at everything.
This is car is deceptively good. I rented this for a few days in the carribeans but the 2019 model which was also an AWD version. It took on some very rocky terrain ( Belive me when I say I'm very critical of Off road vehicles or cross overs who claim to have AWD systems because I own two 4runners and use my TRD PRO extensively for off reading and the limited model gets used for daily dirving) The roads were unpaved, and it was miles of rough, rocky terrain to reach certain sections of the islands. This vehicle wasn't build to last decades like a Toyota. However, what this vehicle was built for was to use for a few years, rack up the milage as fast as you can and get rid of it in 3 years. It's not the best quality interior, but it's far from cheap or rattling.
Alex could you please address the issue of the CVT in the Nissan brand with all of the negative comments warning everyone that these cars will not last because of the transmission Are they reliable? I've heard that the newer CVT is very reliable Thanks really enjoy your reviews
We just purchased a 2020 SL awd, and overall I really like it. My wife flat out loves it. My only complaint is that when the driver's seat is raised higher, it also goes forward, instead of just raising. My height (6'1”) is all in my legs, and so the leg room is a bit cramped. Also, having driven a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer for the past 15 years, the low seating position makes me feel like I'm driving a go kart. But other than that, and not being able to set my cane between the seat and the door, I really like this car. My choice would've been a Subaru Forester, but the Rogue is certainly more than acceptable.
Last time I drive 2017 Sorento, I liked overall feel of the car, but most annoying part was that when I press the gas pedal, the response was very delayed. Sometimes a full second or more. Same was the case when I leave the throttle completely. The car will acknowledge that way later. Is it same with 2019 model? Or its better? That was really a deal breaker for me!
@@PP-qj1ez interesting... I would say there is still 1/4 second acceleration lag but I assumed that was due to using comfort mode with the transmission. I assumed if I switched to sport mode the lag would be reduced. I haven't tested it as I always have the kids in the car and I'm not really zooming around town. My favorite things about the Sorento is the fuel efficiency the third row seating quiet ride massive storage area super long warranty and very competitive initial purchase price. We love our Sorento more than any vehicle we've ever owned. Little over 10k miles and zero problems. Oh and maintenance requirements are next to nothing. 10k mile oil change requirement. 105k coolant change 100k spark plugs. It's crazy! Just turn the key and drive with little added costs aside from gas! Telluride looks nice too but no way would I pay an extra $10k for a little more space. We only have 2 young children so the Sorento is plenty of space for now. If say test drive the Sorento again and try it in sport mode to see if the hesitation is gone to your satisfaction.
@@ABCD-eg5ky yeah, I agree abt the fuel efficiency. I averaged around 25 mpg during my 2 weeks trip in that car. If the lag is reduced to 1/4th, its the sign that Kia is improving! Kia n Hyundai are really building quality cars nowadays!
@@PP-qj1ez yeah I had a 2013 Kia optima until 100k only 1 turbo adjustment that cost $100 during the entire time I owned it. The base price of the Kia is close to the competition. So you need to watch for when they start throwing in crazy rebates. Like I said before we got $5k rebates on select VINS and $3k off msrp from the dealership. Geez how can you beat that?!?! Honda acts like they are selling gold plated turds if you want $500 off msrp and zero rebates. And you get a giant warranty. And our Sorento is soooo quiet and comfortable!
I've only had my Rogue for a little over half a year, and I've had zero problems with the CVT. It's not going to go from 0-60 in 4 seconds, but if you apply the gas in a moderately accelerated pedal push, you'll be surprised at how quick it is, compared to all the negative reviews. Once you figure out how to apply the gas to get to the sweet spot, again, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. I usually run it in ECO to get an around town MPG of 30. All highway miles is even better. Much better than I thought I would get. The best value is what I got, if you're OK with no leather - which is the SV with the sun and sound package. It's basically the SL Platinum w/o the leather. Alex is right, I found this to be a great value for what I paid and far cheaper than comparably equipped competitors.
This person gets it. Everyone just smashes the pedal to the floor and then complain how slow it is. This is how you get the best acceleration out of a CVT equipped vehicle. Moderately aggressive push of the pedal to the floor Then they spool up faster, the equivalent to shifting gears in a regular transmission.
I’m considering a Rogue coming from an 07 Altima. I notice a lot of people talking about Nissan transmissions, but I’ve had my Altima for almost 10 years and I haven’t had any transmission issues that I know of.
One thing of note: YES, 2020 Nissans get a 5 year/60k mile powertrain warranty. BUT, Nissan warranty comes with a $100 deductible per visit. Unless your issue is the exact same issue every time (meaning the exact same part they swapped out), you still have to fork over $100 per visit. Better than the cost it would be without the warranty, but definitely not cheap. Food for thought.
I just rented a 2019 intel Sport Rouge. Took it camping, offroad, mudding. The only thing I wish it had. Automatic side mirror folding inward and outwards buttons. It was so muddy the last couple a day. I had to stop, get out walk to fold the mirrors inwards. It was just me in the vehicle. I thought the sport button was the 4wheeling drive.
I had 2 Rogues although they were the prior model. The biggest problem I had with them is that they lost value very quickly and at a much higher rate than the other cars in the segment. That fact makes them more expensive.
The interior is simplistic and pleasant enough. Seats do look very comfy. For this segment of cars, rear seats and truck room are very important factors. The Rogue does these kind of things very well. I prefer this segment to ride tall and comfortably. If stiffening up the suspension and lowering down the seat to feel just a little sportier like the CR-V, whats the point? Get a hatchback.
Note: The Kia Sorrento is very much a mid-size SUV, not a “tweener” as you’ve said. It competes very well against the Grand Cherokee, Edge, Blazer and all the other 5-seat Mid-Sizes, but adds a fairly useless 3rd row. It is in no way a compact.
Veracity Anyone can sit in the third row, if you remove the second row. Moving the second row an inch in a Rogue makes the second row unusable. Furthermore, seating someone in such tight quarters is actually unsafe. In an impact, all their limbs would be crushed.
@@afcgeo882 we only use our third row about 2% of the time. But when you need it you really need it. I never saw a 3rd row rogue. We have the 3 row Sorento. The telluride is a nicer 3 row but is at least $10k more
My daughter and I are buying the rogue now, she wanted a Honda CR-V, after driving both and RAV4, she chose this. What she liked was more comfortable ride and seats, the size of the interior and we chose the special edition and got an entry level price with several upgrades. The ability to get financing on this was much easier as well.
A lot of Rogues are sold, largely because the buyers are not well informed about the problems engineered into the car. Basically, it's just a cheap car which looks like it competes in a higher class. The driving force becomes the discounted sale price, so saving several thousand dollars over the competition becomes more important than the inconvenience and surplus repair costs which will kick in after the first 60,000 miles. The actual performance of the AWD is notably inferior to the alternatives.
I test drove one and hated that CVT. The revving of the engine then hardly moving at all. The steering is very loose-goosy too. But the technology on it is really nice.
Removing the tiny 3rd row takes it out of any running for me. It's nice to have the small footprint that you can shoehorn a few people into just for a quick cross town trip.
Right now Rav4 hybrid seems tops but the new Rogue 2021 might be the best looking in the class. So will hold off on a Rav4 I think until that is released and the 2021 tuscon is released. The rav4 hybrid has more dealbreakers for me than the potential upcoming suvs. Don't love the overly high ride height, the complexity and oddness of a mechanical AWD, and legroom is much lower than others as you said for taller riders. I don't see the upcoming Tuscon or Rogue (with turbo engine and looks) as having any weaknesses at all.
That's interesting that Nissan discontinued the Rogue Hybrid. It really did not fare well in comparisons to the RAV4 Hybrid. The battery was not large enough to be able to have an EV Mode as does the RAV4, even for short distances; it was up to the vehicle to decide when to drive in EV mode, such as at stop lights. The towing capacity also suffered; while the RAV4 Hybrid is rated at 1,750 lbs. (actually better than the gas engine RAV4), the Rogue Hybrid is not rated for towing at all. The gas engine Rogue even lost in that comparison, being rated at 1.100 lbs.. Hopefully, the 2021 Rogue Hybrid will be more competitive in both mileage and towing.
I wouldn’t ever buy it just because of the CVT. Hate everything about it. I’ve driven my dads Murano with the CVT and it’s just a strange driving experience. I’m a bit spoiled with the 8 speed in my 340i though.
Similar story with Pathfinder. Used Pathfinders are SO cheap. But no carplay / android auto, and it looks every minute it's age. They haven't updated the interior at all.
Nissan Rogue HAS to be big and cheap, otherwise what are the selling points? Crappy CVT, outdated console, cheap interior materials, and mechanics of the past.

Based on kbb figures .. Rav4 will hold ~58% value in first 3 years, whereas Rogue will hold ~50%. So 3 years later no doubt Rav4 will be sold for more that Rogue (15.7k v/s 11.5k in the example). But if you look at the cost of ownership (only depreciation, assuming maintenance and fuel cost to be same) Rav4 would be 11.3k compared to Rogue's 11.5k. Doesn't seem to be a huge difference after all, right? Reliability, yes. Their transmissions may not long as Toyotas n Subarus, but how many years n miles do you really want to own the car? I own Altima since 6 years, and other than regular maintenance, I haven't spent a single penny. And I am very satisfied with my daily driving. It is best value for money, may not be best in all areas!
I believe they are when the 2021 hits this year. Will be a little bit bigger, I believe to accommodate the third row option. Has an all new dash, infotainment, interior and exterior as well

It is still a sold unit whether Avis buys it or if your neighbor next door buys it. Sure Avis will get a fleet price on it, but it is still a sale when it counts towards the end numbers
I own a 2008 Rogue and the CVT transmission went bad at 97000 miles! My 2008 Hyundai Elantra has 200,000 miles no problems! Many Toyotas and Hondas, without the CVT, run longer than 500,000 with very little problems. I would be a fool if I buy another Nissan with a CVT transmission.

Resale value isn't everything, and it isn't anything to lease customers. Also, the Rogue's resale value according to KBB and ALG inst' enough lower than the RAV4 over 5 years to make much difference. Also beware of numbers that are calculated off MSRP. When a car has a deep discount on the lot that's not usually factored into the resale value calculus.

Nobody buys cars anymore. They lease. Wife and I have owned a 2014 , 2018 and a 2019.. never had problems with any of them. Besides the engine being a little loud when you lean on it , it's a good car
When we paid cash for our last vehicle the finance manager told me less than 10% pay cash. Leasing is just another finance product that uses the residual value of the vehicle as part of the down payment. But you even pay interest on that part of the loan. You can synthesize a lease for less money by taking out a 60-72 month loan and trading in every 3-5 years whenever you want AND don't need to worry about extra miles or damage to the vehicle or initiation or termination fees
@Bjorn Ironsides 100% true. NOTHING beats keeping a car for 11-12 years or longer. But if you MUST have a new car every 36-60 months. Just buy it with a 80 month loan and try and keep it at least 60 months. This will cost far less than leasing and the payments would be the same. It just try living within your means
Yes... someone finally got it...Nissan gives major discounts.. does major price negotiations and they sale the extra cars cause of that. They are pushy with sales.

Alex I love the back seats how they are stadium seating and I feel there is way a lot of room in the back seats especially when you can slide the seats back. I did not see you slide yours back in this video. I just love the overall shape and would get one of these instead of a rogue sport. Even though the roads part is awesome.

I'd have a Santa Fe over all the cars mentioned here. Got a new Tucson a few months ago, which is big enough for us. Still 1.6T with DCT here in the UK. Love it!
My stepmom had a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and the transmission went bad at 965 miles, again at 13k miles, again at 33k miles and yet again at 52k miles. After that she bought a 2017 GMC Acadia which has been problem free despite what most people might think
Nissan had a nice run through 2018, but last year it got beaten soundly with its two Rogue vehicles They sold about 350k Rogues, and again, that's two vehicles. Honda sold 384k CRV Toyota sold almost 450k Rav4.
"under 100K miles or under 5 years" same thing Scotty Kilmer would tell you. I agree, this is a 100K vehicle, when you hit the 90K range look to sell / replace it.
About $4000 less than the RAV4.... which is about the cost of the replacement for the horrendously unreliable JATCO/NISSAN CVT transmission. Resale value on the Rogue is abysmal too..... and that ugly chrome grille
It's the same price as RAV4 on the Japanese market. Honda CR-V is really expensive in here and offers less equipment (no steering wheel heater) so I do not see them as well. Unreliability is important so I will avoid anything Nissan. Losing holiday's days due to failing of providing the quality product doesn't calculate well. From what I know, Niss. still doesn't admit the mistakes with CVTs and Leaf poor battery design.
Have owned a Rogue since late 2013. Zero problems. Driven it cross country and locally. Extremely comfortable for its size. Yes, could use some extra hp and the CVT gives a different feel but life is full of trade offs. As Alex points out space, convenience and interior design are commendable. A best buy by any standard. If only Nissan knew how to market their products better...

I have a 2010 and 2011 Rogue and have been impressed with their power in terms of acceleration, even scary at times how fast I can get them up to during passing. The cvt allows this, but yes at the same time imposes the sword of Damocles over one's head. total failure at any time incidentally.
PP the wife has a 2011, have performed drain and fill on the CVT couple times. It is very smooth immediately after, but quickly gets the “rubber band” feel again. So I don’t think it is a quality product, maybe the cooling isn’t sufficient, so the fluid degrade faster than they should. But the wife likes it so 🤷🏻♂️

I own 2019 Rouge. Love the smooth ride, tech and safety features, fuel economy and space inside. Pricing is awesome. Its not the most well made and reliable out there compared to CR-V or RAV-4. Its not going to last 200K miles like the Toyota or Honda. But for the price you can't beat Rogue. Drive it and you will be surprised.

I’m glad to see another Rogue video. I’ve owned an AWD CR-V and I currently own an AWD CX-5. I’ve test driven the newer CR-V with the turbo. I actually preferred the 2.4 to the turbo, even with a CVT.
I really didn’t think a Rogue would appeal to me but I happened to rent one and drove it from Miami to Tampa. Better than a test drive. I really got a feel for it.
First of all, it’s big. Well, big for this segment. I’m well over six feet tall. I fit in my CX-5 with a moon roof, but not as comfortably as I’d like. The rental Rogue was considerably larger and more comfortable. Plenty of storage space too. And it actually has a spare, in case you were to need it.
Second, it’s not slow. I thought for sure the old engine with a CVT, no turbo... I thought it would be a slug. But no. It’s quick. Only one passenger, me in the car but I had a lot of luggage as I was returning from an international trip. Once I got on the highway it actually felt fast. Like really. Like I got pulled over and the officer told me how fast I was going, how I was passing, how it took him a minute to reach me. Whoops! I won’t say how fast, but it didn’t feel like it. Like ‘it’s easy to get speeding ticket speed’ comes easy, if that makes sense. I was shocked.
I made it home safe. Before turning In the rental, I filled the tank. While at the gas station, I popped the trunk and pulled out the owners manual trying to find out what new engine Nissan had in the Rogue. It was the same 2.5. I don’t like automatic transmissions in general and I can’t stand CVTs, but I have to admit I was very impressed.
I think it was a front drive Rogue which effects performance. I’d prefer AWD just because we get heavy rain, flash flooding and an occasional ‘mandatory’ evacuation here in Tampa.
I’m curious about the 2021 Rogue and the CR-V Hybrid but if I can get a huge discount on a 2020 Rogue later this year, I’m all over it. It’s big, comfortable, quick and it’s not bad looking. If you’re well over 6 feet tall and a lot heavier than you should be, it has to be on your list.

I’m the type of person Nissan wants to impress and two days in that particular rental car were surprisingly impressive.
I may test drive another one and have a more expected experience but for whatever reason, the one I rented felt very quick and comfortable.

It's like everyone's conscious knows it's an awesome crossover with lots of space, huge windows , one of the best stadium style seats in the rear and so much more but nobody wants to speak out loud and rather talk how nice the other SUV's are

The Rogue is not slow. It's got decent speed for an SUV! Besides, this vehicle is not meant to be raced around. Its a spacious SUV with good fuel economy, very good safety features and technology, at a low price. What more could you want?

I have two Rogues, a 2019 SL and a 2017 SV. My family loves them both, zero problems. They both regularly get 34mpg on the highway, and still have tons of room.

I have Nissan Rogue 2014 and still runs very smooth. Haven't encountered any problem since I bought it. It's been 6 years already, very reliable car.
I’m actually a big supporter of Nissan. I am also very aware that they have tons of quality issues, have definitely experienced a few myself, such as some parts of the interior plastics detaching or coming lose, the paint coming off of some buttons, and for some reason the corners of the front bumper seem to always come loose. I definitely don’t think Nissan makes the greatest products out there, however I commend them for the ability to still remain unique. They’re very comfortable, smooth to drive (in normal conditions), and stylish-the newer lineup has gotten quite attractive over the years and imo are some of the best looking vehicles out there. That includes the Rogue, it’s very good at what it’s for and clearly millions of people seem to think so. But if you keep in the back of your mind constantly that something will break down, then NO CAR will seem like a good option. It’s a mentality, not a destined possibility. Nevertheless, I believe Nissan makes good products, and it’s very obvious if you look through some of the changes they’ve made to their lineup that they are improving and will continue doing so, I don’t see a dying brand here.
I test drove a Rogue years ago and I was shocked how much I loved it. It felt way bigger on the inside (it is) and more versatile.
Since then, I've become pickier with tech and CVTs, so I'm not as sure I'd get one, but I generally think the Rogue is a compelling choice.

I like the Rogue.. Driving the 2019 Base Model and it has all the features which I want for my daily driving. Apple car play, reverse camera, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert. I got my highest recorded miles per gallon when I was driving from Boston to NY - 38.3 and on highway driving in Eco mode with 65-70 miles speed I get average of 33 miles/gal. Leased it and the payments are 200$/ month. Pretty satisfied with the purchase. Black color one looks good too. Just ordered a 40$ wheel hub caps to replace the stock ones from Amazon and it transformed the look. Now is the right time to buy one as you will get a very good deal. Do negotiate it a lot when you go to the dealer. Hope it helps!!!
Like most customers I leased a 2017 Platinum due to massive discounting . I use mine as a winter driver ( Sports car driver in summer) . I expected to be ambivalent about the Rogue due to the mushy handling and CVT but the more I drove it the more I appreciated it for its comfort and space. I commute in heavy urban traffic so lack of power and handling isn't huge negative. I also noticed that the Rogue is taller than most competitors so actually roomier feeling and seats are better some of the most comfortable I've ever sat in, plus the Pro pilot is useful on long road trips. I ended up leasing another 2020 Platinum last year at another huge discount ( no wonder Nissan is in financial trouble) and may lease the next Gen Rogue if I like it. I could upgrade to a more expensive SUV but can't justify the extra cost again due to its primary use as a winter only vehicle.

@@Brew-doo I suspect a lot of people never change the transmission fluid. Which is, to borrow from Talking Heads, "same as it ever was." People in the '90s swore Ford and Chrysler automatics were junk because they died somewhere between 75k and 100k...but they conveniently forgot to mention they ignored the manufacturers' recommendation to get the transmission serviced every 15k or 30k.
Or how many did I know who waited until their transmission started "acting up" to take them to a mechanic back in the day? By that time, it was usually too late, and smart mechanics would turn them away fearing a lawsuit. They often used an excuse something to the effect of, "If you change the fluid, it'll stir up the gunk in the transmission and kill it."
I used to work for a company that had a fleet of Altima sedans during the early days of the CVT 2007-2010. They run them to around 120k then sell them, having never touched the transmission. Their second owners get a nasty surprise pretty soon after buying, I bet.
My own anecdotal experience: I've put 131,xxx miles on a 2010 cube and it's running as good as the day we bought it at 10 miles. I do get the transmission serviced every 30k.
Nissan says to only inspect the cvt fluid. Not to change it ever unless it fails the inspection or severe usage. And honestly I paid $5000 less for my 19 Altima than say a Honda Accord. And I have AWD saving me $900 on snow tires every 3 years. So I'll have that $8k in the bank in the event at 150k miles the jatco fails and it costs $3500 to replace it out of pocket. I'll still be $1500+ 10 years of interest ahead of the game. I also really like the cvt getting great mileage and power. So prob saving another $1000+ on gas over 10 years. People seem to worry about the wrong things.
@@ABCD-eg5ky my owner's manual prescribes a transmission drain-and-fill every 60,000 miles under "normal service" or every 30,000 miles under 'severe service." I do it every 30,000. Other members of Nissan cube Owners Club who do the same have seen over 200,000 miles on their original CVTs.

@@ABCD-eg5ky my cube is a 2010. The drain-and-fill costs me $150. There's a more thorough service where they flush the transmission and replace its filter. I think that one's about $400. I'll probably have them do that one at my 150,000-mile service, which should come up about a year from now.

Rogue - If you are not car enthusiast, just need a roomy family CUV which is value for money!
CX-5 - You are car enthusiast and ready to compromise on practicality like roominess and fuel economy.
Rav4 & CR-V - Best of both worlds :)
CX-5 owner, and while the car handles well, and brakes well, the base 2.5NA is the weakest part, tuned for fuel economy, and not performance, combined with a droning sound under load. Turbo was not offered the year I bought mine.
Wife is trading from Cadillac ats into turbo cx5. I think it's all around the best in the segment. Fast, handles well, nice interior. It's just really solid at everything.

This is car is deceptively good. I rented this for a few days in the carribeans but the 2019 model which was also an AWD version. It took on some very rocky terrain ( Belive me when I say I'm very critical of Off road vehicles or cross overs who claim to have AWD systems because I own two 4runners and use my TRD PRO extensively for off reading and the limited model gets used for daily dirving) The roads were unpaved, and it was miles of rough, rocky terrain to reach certain sections of the islands. This vehicle wasn't build to last decades like a Toyota. However, what this vehicle was built for was to use for a few years, rack up the milage as fast as you can and get rid of it in 3 years. It's not the best quality interior, but it's far from cheap or rattling.
Alex could you please address the issue of the CVT in the Nissan brand with all of the negative comments warning everyone that these cars will not last because of the transmission Are they reliable? I've heard that the newer CVT is very reliable Thanks really enjoy your reviews

We just purchased a 2020 SL awd, and overall I really like it. My wife flat out loves it. My only complaint is that when the driver's seat is raised higher, it also goes forward, instead of just raising. My height (6'1”) is all in my legs, and so the leg room is a bit cramped. Also, having driven a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer for the past 15 years, the low seating position makes me feel like I'm driving a go kart. But other than that, and not being able to set my cane between the seat and the door, I really like this car. My choice would've been a Subaru Forester, but the Rogue is certainly more than acceptable.

Last time I drive 2017 Sorento, I liked overall feel of the car, but most annoying part was that when I press the gas pedal, the response was very delayed. Sometimes a full second or more. Same was the case when I leave the throttle completely. The car will acknowledge that way later. Is it same with 2019 model? Or its better? That was really a deal breaker for me!
@@PP-qj1ez interesting... I would say there is still 1/4 second acceleration lag but I assumed that was due to using comfort mode with the transmission. I assumed if I switched to sport mode the lag would be reduced. I haven't tested it as I always have the kids in the car and I'm not really zooming around town. My favorite things about the Sorento is the fuel efficiency the third row seating quiet ride massive storage area super long warranty and very competitive initial purchase price. We love our Sorento more than any vehicle we've ever owned. Little over 10k miles and zero problems. Oh and maintenance requirements are next to nothing. 10k mile oil change requirement. 105k coolant change 100k spark plugs. It's crazy! Just turn the key and drive with little added costs aside from gas! Telluride looks nice too but no way would I pay an extra $10k for a little more space. We only have 2 young children so the Sorento is plenty of space for now. If say test drive the Sorento again and try it in sport mode to see if the hesitation is gone to your satisfaction.

@@PP-qj1ez yeah I had a 2013 Kia optima until 100k only 1 turbo adjustment that cost $100 during the entire time I owned it. The base price of the Kia is close to the competition. So you need to watch for when they start throwing in crazy rebates. Like I said before we got $5k rebates on select VINS and $3k off msrp from the dealership. Geez how can you beat that?!?! Honda acts like they are selling gold plated turds if you want $500 off msrp and zero rebates. And you get a giant warranty. And our Sorento is soooo quiet and comfortable!

I've only had my Rogue for a little over half a year, and I've had zero problems with the CVT. It's not going to go from 0-60 in 4 seconds, but if you apply the gas in a moderately accelerated pedal push, you'll be surprised at how quick it is, compared to all the negative reviews. Once you figure out how to apply the gas to get to the sweet spot, again, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. I usually run it in ECO to get an around town MPG of 30. All highway miles is even better. Much better than I thought I would get. The best value is what I got, if you're OK with no leather - which is the SV with the sun and sound package. It's basically the SL Platinum w/o the leather. Alex is right, I found this to be a great value for what I paid and far cheaper than comparably equipped competitors.
This person gets it. Everyone just smashes the pedal to the floor and then complain how slow it is. This is how you get the best acceleration out of a CVT equipped vehicle. Moderately aggressive push of the pedal to the floor Then they spool up faster, the equivalent to shifting gears in a regular transmission.
I’m considering a Rogue coming from an 07 Altima. I notice a lot of people talking about Nissan transmissions, but I’ve had my Altima for almost 10 years and I haven’t had any transmission issues that I know of.

One thing of note: YES, 2020 Nissans get a 5 year/60k mile powertrain warranty. BUT, Nissan warranty comes with a $100 deductible per visit. Unless your issue is the exact same issue every time (meaning the exact same part they swapped out), you still have to fork over $100 per visit. Better than the cost it would be without the warranty, but definitely not cheap. Food for thought.
Currently the 2020 Rogue has a $5000 off cash deal here in Canada, the wife is very tempted to upgrade from her 2011.

I just rented a 2019 intel Sport Rouge. Took it camping, offroad, mudding. The only thing I wish it had. Automatic side mirror folding inward and outwards buttons. It was so muddy the last couple a day. I had to stop, get out walk to fold the mirrors inwards. It was just me in the vehicle.
I thought the sport button was the 4wheeling drive.
I had 2 Rogues although they were the prior model. The biggest problem I had with them is that they lost value very quickly and at a much higher rate than the other cars in the segment. That fact makes them more expensive.

The interior is simplistic and pleasant enough. Seats do look very comfy. For this segment of cars, rear seats and truck room are very important factors. The Rogue does these kind of things very well. I prefer this segment to ride tall and comfortably. If stiffening up the suspension and lowering down the seat to feel just a little sportier like the CR-V, whats the point? Get a hatchback.
Note: The Kia Sorrento is very much a mid-size SUV, not a “tweener” as you’ve said. It competes very well against the Grand Cherokee, Edge, Blazer and all the other 5-seat Mid-Sizes, but adds a fairly useless 3rd row. It is in no way a compact.
We use the third row pretty often hauling little children. But my wife can sit in the third row when we move the second row up about an inch
Veracity Anyone can sit in the third row, if you remove the second row. Moving the second row an inch in a Rogue makes the second row unusable. Furthermore, seating someone in such tight quarters is actually unsafe. In an impact, all their limbs would be crushed.
@@afcgeo882 we only use our third row about 2% of the time. But when you need it you really need it. I never saw a 3rd row rogue. We have the 3 row Sorento. The telluride is a nicer 3 row but is at least $10k more

My daughter and I are buying the rogue now, she wanted a Honda CR-V, after driving both and RAV4, she chose this. What she liked was more comfortable ride and seats, the size of the interior and we chose the special edition and got an entry level price with several upgrades. The ability to get financing on this was much easier as well.
A lot of Rogues are sold, largely because the buyers are not well informed about the problems engineered into the car. Basically, it's just a cheap car which looks like it competes in a higher class. The driving force becomes the discounted sale price, so saving several thousand dollars over the competition becomes more important than the inconvenience and surplus repair costs which will kick in after the first 60,000 miles. The actual performance of the AWD is notably inferior to the alternatives.
I test drove one and hated that CVT. The revving of the engine then hardly moving at all. The steering is very loose-goosy too. But the technology on it is really nice.
Removing the tiny 3rd row takes it out of any running for me. It's nice to have the small footprint that you can shoehorn a few people into just for a quick cross town trip.
I have the SV premium package. Love it.
Getting a Santa Fe hybrid next year tho. Gas is too dam high.
Owned a 19 Rogue SL for 3 months, 3,000 miles... Transmission and safety systems problems were the reason I traded for something else in October.
Right now Rav4 hybrid seems tops but the new Rogue 2021 might be the best looking in the class. So will hold off on a Rav4 I think until that is released and the 2021 tuscon is released. The rav4 hybrid has more dealbreakers for me than the potential upcoming suvs. Don't love the overly high ride height, the complexity and oddness of a mechanical AWD, and legroom is much lower than others as you said for taller riders. I don't see the upcoming Tuscon or Rogue (with turbo engine and looks) as having any weaknesses at all.

That's interesting that Nissan discontinued the Rogue Hybrid. It really did not fare well in comparisons to the RAV4 Hybrid. The battery was not large enough to be able to have an EV Mode as does the RAV4, even for short distances; it was up to the vehicle to decide when to drive in EV mode, such as at stop lights. The towing capacity also suffered; while the RAV4 Hybrid is rated at 1,750 lbs. (actually better than the gas engine RAV4), the Rogue Hybrid is not rated for towing at all. The gas engine Rogue even lost in that comparison, being rated at 1.100 lbs.. Hopefully, the 2021 Rogue Hybrid will be more competitive in both mileage and towing.
I wouldn’t ever buy it just because of the CVT. Hate everything about it. I’ve driven my dads Murano with the CVT and it’s just a strange driving experience. I’m a bit spoiled with the 8 speed in my 340i though.
Similar story with Pathfinder. Used Pathfinders are SO cheap. But no carplay / android auto, and it looks every minute it's age. They haven't updated the interior at all.
Love my 2020 Rogue but not fond of the CVT and wish they would put digital odometer in them..

Before everyone start shitting on Nissan with their lower resale value n reliability let me tell you something with example:
U will buy Rogue for significantly less than Rav4. So even though the resale is considerably less, your portion of owning both the cars could be almost the same!
For instance, 2019 Rav4 XLE costs ard 27k and 2019 Rogue SV would cost ard 23k. Based on kbb figures .. Rav4 will hold ~58% value in first 3 years, whereas Rogue will hold ~50%. So 3 years later no doubt Rav4 will be sold for more that Rogue (15.7k v/s 11.5k in the example). But if you look at the cost of ownership (only depreciation, assuming maintenance and fuel cost to be same) Rav4 would be 11.3k compared to Rogue's 11.5k. Doesn't seem to be a huge difference after all, right?
Reliability, yes. Their transmissions may not long as Toyotas n Subarus, but how many years n miles do you really want to own the car? I own Altima since 6 years, and other than regular maintenance, I haven't spent a single penny. And I am very satisfied with my daily driving. It is best value for money, may not be best in all areas!

It is still a sold unit whether Avis buys it or if your neighbor next door buys it. Sure Avis will get a fleet price on it, but it is still a sale when it counts towards the end numbers
I own a 2008 Rogue and the CVT transmission went bad at 97000 miles! My 2008 Hyundai Elantra has 200,000 miles no problems! Many Toyotas and Hondas, without the CVT, run longer than 500,000 with very little problems. I would be a fool if I buy another Nissan with a CVT transmission.
He talks about selling the car within five years, somehow he forgets to include the fact that this will have much lower resale value than the Honda or Toyota
True! But think about this. U will buy Rogue for significantly less than Rav4. So even though the resale is considerably less, your portion of owning both the cars could be almost the same!
For instance, 2019 Rav4 XLE costs ard 27k and 2019 Rogue SV would cost ard 23k. Based on kbb figures .. Rav4 will hold ~58% value in first 3 years, whereas Rogue will hold ~50%. So 3 years later no doubt Rav4 will be sold for more that Rogue (15.7k v/s 11.5k in the example). But if you look at the cost of ownership (only depreciation, assuming maintenance and fuel cost to be same) Rav4 would be 11.3k compared to Rogue's 11.5k. Doesn't seem to be a huge difference after all, right?
I own a Nissan Altima. And believe me, Nissans are real value for money.
Resale value isn't everything, and it isn't anything to lease customers. Also, the Rogue's resale value according to KBB and ALG inst' enough lower than the RAV4 over 5 years to make much difference. Also beware of numbers that are calculated off MSRP. When a car has a deep discount on the lot that's not usually factored into the resale value calculus.

Nobody buys cars anymore. They lease. Wife and I have owned a 2014 , 2018 and a 2019.. never had problems with any of them. Besides the engine being a little loud when you lean on it , it's a good car
When we paid cash for our last vehicle the finance manager told me less than 10% pay cash. Leasing is just another finance product that uses the residual value of the vehicle as part of the down payment. But you even pay interest on that part of the loan. You can synthesize a lease for less money by taking out a 60-72 month loan and trading in every 3-5 years whenever you want AND don't need to worry about extra miles or damage to the vehicle or initiation or termination fees
@Bjorn Ironsides 100% true. NOTHING beats keeping a car for 11-12 years or longer. But if you MUST have a new car every 36-60 months. Just buy it with a 80 month loan and try and keep it at least 60 months. This will cost far less than leasing and the payments would be the same. It just try living within your means

Yes... someone finally got it...Nissan gives major discounts.. does major price negotiations and they sale the extra cars cause of that. They are pushy with sales.
Their sales were down 30% in December. Nissan is in trouble.

Alex I love the back seats how they are stadium seating and I feel there is way a lot of room in the back seats especially when you can slide the seats back. I did not see you slide yours back in this video. I just love the overall shape and would get one of these instead of a rogue sport. Even though the roads part is awesome.

To be honest Roque is the best SUV. CRV not comfortable to drive. RAV 4 shocks are hard to bouncy you can feel the road.

I'd have a Santa Fe over all the cars mentioned here. Got a new Tucson a few months ago, which is big enough for us. Still 1.6T with DCT here in the UK. Love it!
My stepmom had a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and the transmission went bad at 965 miles, again at 13k miles, again at 33k miles and yet again at 52k miles. After that she bought a 2017 GMC Acadia which has been problem free despite what most people might think

Nissan had a nice run through 2018, but last year it got beaten soundly with its two Rogue vehicles
They sold about 350k Rogues, and again, that's two vehicles.
Honda sold 384k CRV
Toyota sold almost 450k Rav4.
"under 100K miles or under 5 years" same thing Scotty Kilmer would tell you. I agree, this is a 100K vehicle, when you hit the 90K range look to sell / replace it.

About $4000 less than the RAV4.... which is about the cost of the replacement for the horrendously unreliable JATCO/NISSAN CVT transmission. Resale value on the Rogue is abysmal too..... and that ugly chrome grille

Nissan is going downhill. They ousted their Chairman, and they've been losing billions of dollars. It'll be the next Saturn or Mercury if today
It's the same price as RAV4 on the Japanese market. Honda CR-V is really expensive in here and offers less equipment (no steering wheel heater) so I do not see them as well.
Unreliability is important so I will avoid anything Nissan. Losing holiday's days due to failing of providing the quality product doesn't calculate well. From what I know, Niss. still doesn't admit the mistakes with CVTs and Leaf poor battery design.
