  • While exploring the streets of Ottawa with Judy Graves, one of Canada's most famous homeless advocates, we happened to meet an adorable mother and son living in a homeless shelter.
    Annie and Matto are very proud that they are Inuit. They are from Nunavut, which is pretty much on the top of the world. Matto helped explain it to me letting me know it's next to Greenland.
    During my Canadian road trip in 2011 I fell in love with the aboriginal culture. Such wonderful people with a gorgeous culture that must be respected and can never be forgotten. Annie and Matto speak their original language and share with us a few phrases. Many of you know how much I hate cold weather, but I would visit up North in a heart beat just to learn more about the Inuit people.
    Aboriginal people come to Canada's urban cities for various reasons. Sadly, once here, it's often hard for them to find a way to survive. As Cassien told us in Yellowknife [bit.ly/H3uCGi], going back home can also be a problem.
    Annie and Matto have lived in a homeless shelter for over a year. They are on a housing list, but that often takes time.
    If we are ever going to end homelessness in Canada we must seriously focus on listening to our aboriginal neighbors.
    Very special thanks to Ottawa Salvation Army and Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness.

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

    Kind of ironic that the indigenous people are homeless... I think this is the most heart breaking video you have made... These people are part of the land they come from... They should never be without a home... I am sad...

      Yes right this is what I always say that in America, North and South, these ppl are historical owners of these lands.

      47 E.B.O you’d think it would be that easy. But certain reservations deal with homeless people differently. I know my reservation would offer housing and land depending on what district you’re registered in and homelessness actually isn’t really a thing there cause if it. The process may be long but shit you get a piece of land and a trailer.

    • @jetset1123
      @jetset1123 4 года назад

      47 E.B.O however I have a friend and she lives with her mother and some of the kids. She also has a baby. And her mother is having to hold a job paying bills while my friend watches the kids and her baby. Right now they’re in a rented trailer until they get housing at this place we call the New Rentals. But like I said, idk how other tribes do it outside of Arizona. Cause I know my girlfriends tribe kinda does the same thing as mine(she’s Apache) I’m sure Navajos do as well and Pimas most definitely get housing cause those bitches have casinos everywhere

    • @jetset1123
      @jetset1123 4 года назад

      47 E.B.O also idk if you don’t know but Casinos boost income for Native Americans and their people. By giving them money, housing, recreation, etc. Lowkey sometimes we wanna know where that money is going cause we don’t always see you but the chairmen has like 2 brand new cars and a 10k Christmas bonus 💀

    I am so sad to say that Matu just passed away a few days ago here in Ottawa. He had finally found a bachelor apartment in Centretown and things were still not easy but he always had a beautiful smile and looked out for his fellow Inuit...he will be greatly missed and warm memories will forever be within my heart. Aakkuluk, Matu.

    This just touches me. I totally agree that it is tragically ironic that these beautiful, proud indigenous people are homeless in a land where their ancestors were the original inhabitants. We need to do so much more to help the all the indigenous peoples whom have been displaced by "progress". And I agree their language is beautiful. Like music. . .Good Luck and love to you Annie and Matto. . .

    I'm from Ottawa and went to high school about two blocks away from the shelter this was filmed at. The Inuit homeless presence is everywhere in Ottawa -- there are more Inuit in Ottawa than anywhere else outside Nunavut. I've had the chance to hang out with a couple of them, and they're incredibly kind, intelligent, resilient people. The amount of strength and hope required to live through the stuff they do is more than 50% of white Ottawans could deal with combined. We settlers get so wrapped up in our own meaningless dramas, with the majority of us being in situations of extreme privilege. we need to open our fucking eyes to the wisdom of Indigenous culture and understand that by taking the time to learn from our Indigenous siblings, we will remember what it is to be human. Because half of us settlers have no fucking idea what being human is all about. We're just puppets, slaves to consumption, judgment, comfort, and other capitalist bullshit. We're lucky to be around these people in Ottawa, who can still speak their ancient language, who survived residential schools and the attempts to wipe out their culture that took out 90% of Indigenous languages and culture across the country. Inuit people grew up on the land and their awareness of animals and senses in general are crazy. Ask them about it sometime. Illali.

    I live in Ottawa and the Inuit services centre is on the way to my doctor's office. I've seen many Inuit in that area and many look like they've fallen on hard times. I must admit ignorance as to why they moved to Ottawa in the first place.
    Unfortunately, my family and I are living below the poverty line ourselves so I'm in no position to help.

Now that i got subzidised housing,i pay 109.00$ per month pluss hydro.

What skills does this guy have, does he have substance abuse problems, if it isnt working out in Ottawa, why not move back or move somewhere else? What does he do with the money he does get?
