Homeless family living in a small RV with no bathroom or water using social media.

- I really don't know where to begin with this story so I'll start at the beginning. Although this interview is taped in Dayton, Nevada, I first meet Kerry and his family months ago on Twitter.
As I think about this family I get emotional. I cannot imagine raising a child in a small RV with no bathroom or running water. This family's life is far from easy, but together they keep fighting, and together they stay grateful for the little things.
Kerry has become the biggest evangelist for the We Are Visible community. He even collected cans to pay for printing cost to distribute flyers at a local homeless connect day Not sure any church or homeless services organization has done that.
Kerry is always thanking people on Twitter and keeps engaging new homeless people who join the community. I am grateful for Kerry because he's championed We Are Visible into so much more than what I ever imagined.
When I started We Are Visible [wearevisible.com] I envisioned homeless services helping homeless people via social media. But something far better has happened. Homeless people are encouraging and helping other homeless people.
What I also never imagined was a 13 year-old homeless boy connecting with me on social media. Keifer uses his Sony PSP to get on Facebook. He leaves me little notes because he does not have a keyboard to type on. Often just a "hi" or "huz" he'll leave on my wall. Completely wrecks me every time. It's because of this young boy that I have a new vision for We Are Visible that I made public at 140 Conference in Los Angeles
One night Sabrina tweet me that Keifer took my Facebook profile photo and replaced Tony Hawk on this video game. It was at that moment I knew I had to visit this family, so this last week I flew into Reno and drove to where their RV is parked.
I took the family out to eat. This was the first time this family has been out to eat in over two years. We went to Keifer's favorite restaurant. It was a wonderful night. You can see some photos here: www.flickr.com/photos/37946616...
I have to say that I fell in love with this family. I've worked with homeless families for years, and although each and every family I want off the streets, I have never felt such passion, or felt so powerless, in wanting Kerry, Sabrina and Keifer a better life.
If you know of anyone in or near Carson City, Nevada, that can help Kerry find a job please contact them. He wants to work. They will hopefully have housing soon, but the battle is far from over.
This family has taught me lots. All Keifer wanted when I visited was a bag of fortune cookies for a class project. I spent a few hours with them and helped them get outside of their crisis for only a moment. I so wish I could do more.
And to be really honest I am flattered that Keifer replaced Tony Hawk with my ugly mug, but Tony Hawk is way more awesome than I'll ever be. Wouldn't it be great if Tony Hawk went to visit Keifer? I think so, and I'm sure Keifer will put Tony's photo back. The media attention alone with hopefully get the local community to help this family. Call me a dreamer but stranger things have happened. Why not tweet Tony Hawk [ / tonyhawk ] a link to this story.
I want the best for this family. They are amazing, and although I spent only a few hours with them, I think I left my heart in Dayton, Nevada.

About Invisible People:
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Look how happy that sweet pitty is. She doesn't care that they're homeless or struggling, she's just happy to be with her family. I hate when people say homeless people shouldnt be "allowed" to have dogs. Sometimes that big puppy smile is what you need to get up in the morning.
I hope this family gets the help they need.
Believe it or not, these people are living the dream and share a special bond that most families could only wish they had...
I think about that all the time when my friends flex all the things they have. I mean I'm not poor or even struggling but I don't get all the material things I want but i have a close connection to my family..
Yup yup

They have a trailer with a bed in it!!! I was homeless for 2 years and most the time I had only a sleeping bag and a pillow I would sleep on the cold hard ground wherever I went! There were times I couldn’t find a building with coverage one time I fell asleep and it rained so hard 😞 and I’ve also slept in baseball dugouts and where I had like 2 sleeping bags and blankets and I still got frost bite on my feet.

@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 You don't ask people to give up their children because they cost money, wtf is that.
@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 Still doesn't mean it's right. It's just quite insensitive your comment. You can't judge others on how they spend the (little) money they have. Maybe they are saving in other ways you don't know of. Maybe they prefer to have less money but need the companion, there's tons of reasons to think of. Just ridiculous that you would state they are doing better than some, just because they kept the dog.
@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 I never said that
ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 The kids life actually isn’t that hard to maintain especially if you focus on his health over theirs. He might not be eating correct nutrition but half of the rich slobs don’t either. Who knows, this might be a valuable lesson for this boy, unlike the spoiled brats that emerge from wealthy families and STILL amount to NOTHING. All about perspective my friend.
The young man has quite the battle to success ahead of him. Hope he can use his experience to create the life his parents could not afford him.
T hddh no way shape or form does he sound like a dick
Lol true
T hddh you sound like one
T hddh how your comment makes no sense

Some of my best and worst memories are from a time when my dad was out of work. We were nowhere near homeless, but it meant that he was home every day. Picked me up from school. Had a relationship with me after years of being gone for work when I woke up and went to bed.
Working at a low income housing project it really hit me that some of the poorest people are the richest of this world. When we don’t have gifts and snacks to bribe, we give love and encouragement. When we don’t have money for toys, we create experiences. We are the most adaptive species, but we have adapted to capitalism and the degradation of family unit.
To this family I say that now you may look upon your situation with disdain, but when you are back on your feet you will look back fondly on the times and proximity with one another that grew from your hardship. :, )

This is the new opiate of the masses. Wake up and make change. And your statement is the sigh of the oppressed creature. If we all wanted real change it would happen. But too many people are content having more than other than telling them that money isn’t happiness. Money cannot buy those things, but poverty can’t buy you shit.
This breaks my heart. The little boy is such a good kid and deserves so much more.
I’m 17 with 5 other siblings and my mom only. My mom already is a single mother. I can’t imagine if this happened to us. 6 kids and a parent.... I gotta be thankful for everything I have.
Be thankful for your mother as well and always appreciate her no matter what. I’m a child of 5, 20 years old and my mom has been single since I was 6 with all my older siblings being 8-17 years old. My heart is breaking and going out to families like this. Where are their relatives?! If any of my family members were going homeless, there would be no question I would do everything in my power to help them out. Yes, the economy right now is hitting everyone, but it is times like now when we all need to come together and help one another through these tough tims. Strength in numbers they say.

R.I.P to that gorgeous dog. Hope this family is doing great now.
It's always the good hearted ppl homeless and the evils ones rich
Another excellent video. I lived in my van for maybe ten years...I forget. Future homeless people should get a vehicle they can live in, with the money they have (if they have any) before they move out of their house. I know for some this isn't possible, of course, but I see many who won't admit that 'homeless' is coming for them, and they keep trying to live in a house. Vans are very doable!
vicky o'connor houses apartments are traps, dysfunctional system
Good advice, Vickie, sad, but realistic and meanwhile in the Dysfunctional District of Columbia... crickets.....
moneymagnetelizabeth tiny homes are the way to go imo if you’re actually able to buy a home. Easy on the land compared to normal builds, as well as waaaaaaaaay more affordable. One of the biggest issues with America is the fact that capitalism has allowed the housing market value to out weight the cost of living pay. Pay just can’t keep up to the every rising prices of literally everything, including houses.

great thinking to get that trailer that was an excellent idea and for only 200 bucks better than sleeping in a ditch or on the street certainly much more secure , so many people on hard times, to be honest I just wouldn't have thought of without seeing these videos so filming the subject does work in raising awareness which otherwise might not be there it just reminds the rest of us how cushy our lives really are and the most basic and important fundamental in anyones life is a roof over your head

Having a kid is what kick started my life, all I knew is she was the most important thing in my life, if I had to work at McDonald’s, I would, if I had to work six jobs, I would, just to make sure she had everything she needed, and some of the things she wanted. Before her, we could barely take care of ourselves, myself coming off of a long life of addiction, she’s never been without at least an apartment, and everything else she needs. Though this was quiet long ago, it’s beyond me how he had time for anything else, especially Twitter. I hope they got their shit together.
