My dad lived in NYC for a couple years in the 70s. He always said he never got mugged because he bought an Army jacket and would start ranting to make people think he was a vet with mental issues. Not the best lesson to teach your kids in hindsight. Edit: many of you have pointed out the self preservation instincts my dad has. It was a good lesson, since I used it during college in eastern DC. That’s part they don’t show in movies.
Your dad taught you that everyone's interactions with you are based on their perceptions of you. Theyll treat you the way they THINK you should be treated. That's a good lesson for a kid, you can survive alot of fucked up situations with that lesson.

Man its crazy. In 2014 I visited the city for over a week. Went to bars and restaurants and walked home at night with my girl. Rode the subway late at night. Strolled around everywhere like we owned the place. Was the greatest thing. Got engaged at the top of the empire state building to a huge roaring applause. I'm not going back anytime soon.
I visited NYC in April 2014 and it was great, the city had the magical feel that I always thought it would do, I’m not sure it will ever go back to that now.

In the late 80s I used to like walking back up wee hours of the morning after a night out in Manhattan. Up to 59th and 3rd Ave to take the bus back to Astoria. I don't know if it was any more dangerous than taking the subway Somewhere around 56th and 3rd there was a bakery that made bagels for restaurants but you could buy fresh out of the oven directly from them. No store front you just either knew about it or not. Those were the days.

We may complain about crime today, but that's because we've had it so good for the past 30 years.

I went to NYC back in June while the riots/protests were going on. It was definitely strange walking around “the city that never sleeps” and feeling like I was in I Am Legend. I stood in front of Grand Central Station where they filmed the “GODAMNIT FRED” scene and didn’t see ANYBODY walking for the 15 minutes I was there. Maybe 3 cars passed by. Unforgettable experience.

"He was governor in, like, the 90s." Brown's first go-round was 1975-1983. Second didn't start until 2011. And the only reason he was eligible is that term limits usually don't apply to terms already served. Unless the law is changed, no one else will ever be governor for as long as he was.

I've been in the military in two separate stints for almost 30 years, and I've traveled much for my civilian jobs as well. I've been to 22 states, lived in 7 of them, and lived in 1 foreign country. I've learned in the last 30 years one simple rule, and it's never been challenged or disputed: conservative areas and states were always cleaner, safer, and better run with better infrastructure. Areas run by liberals (Democrats) were always dirtier, more unsafe, and poorly run with bad infrastructure. I've never seen it any other way.
That makes sense. If your social situation is good, you vote conservative to try to conserve it; if your social situation is awful, you vote progressive to try to progress to something better. That's the respective roles for right wing and left wing politicians, to conserve or to destroy and rebuild. Obviously that depends on each individual's perspective and personality to a large degree.
A tip from a NYer...when visiting always have 2 stashes of cash. 1 for the robber and 1 you want to keep. I haven't been robbed since the 80's but learned this the hard way.

Man its crazy. In 2014 I visited the city for over a week. Went to bars and restaurants and walked home at night with my girl. Rode the subway late at night. Strolled around everywhere like we owned the place. Was the greatest thing. Got engaged at the top of the empire state building to a huge roaring applause.
I'm not going back anytime soon.

In the late 80s I used to like walking back up wee hours of the morning after a night out in Manhattan. Up to 59th and 3rd Ave to take the bus back to Astoria. I don't know if it was any more dangerous than taking the subway Somewhere around 56th and 3rd there was a bakery that made bagels for restaurants but you could buy fresh out of the oven directly from them. No store front you just either knew about it or not. Those were the days.

Then the city forced all government workers to live in the city so 10-15 workers would “rent” a house in the city. Property tax is through the roof in Detroit. The democrats ruined the city. Pretty sure every single mayor since the 80’s was removed from office and most are/were in prison.

The crime rate in the US was rising starting in the 70's. It eventually went down in the early 90's. But NYC had a reputation that bled over into movies like: Death Wish (a vigilante taking on out-of-control crime), Escape From New York (NYC is literally turned into a prison), The Warriors (more gang members than cops). We may complain about crime today, but that's because we've had it so good for the past 30 years.

I visited USA for two months a few years ago, and I gotta say, out of all the big cities I saw, I liked NY the least. It seemed neutered and overcrowded. Like everyone wanted to live there because it was cool two decades ago. I liked Chicago, San Francisco or even LA much more.

I went to NYC back in June while the riots/protests were going on. It was definitely strange walking around “the city that never sleeps” and feeling like I was in I Am Legend. I stood in front of Grand Central Station where they filmed the “GODAMNIT FRED” scene and didn’t see ANYBODY walking for the 15 minutes I was there. Maybe 3 cars passed by. Unforgettable experience.

In the 70s business were allowed to be open. Today business are ordered to be closed and people are surprised they are going out of business after they ran out of money. I know of several large corporate retailers that have said it’s not worth having flagship stores there anymore and shutting them down. NYC is toast and will look like Detroit for a long time.

I've been in the military in two separate stints for almost 30 years, and I've traveled much for my civilian jobs as well. I've been to 22 states, lived in 7 of them, and lived in 1 foreign country. I've learned in the last 30 years one simple rule, and it's never been challenged or disputed: conservative areas and states were always cleaner, safer, and better run with better infrastructure. Areas run by liberals (Democrats) were always dirtier, more unsafe, and poorly run with bad infrastructure. I've never seen it any other way.

That makes sense. If your social situation is good, you vote conservative to try to conserve it; if your social situation is awful, you vote progressive to try to progress to something better. That's the respective roles for right wing and left wing politicians, to conserve or to destroy and rebuild.
Obviously that depends on each individual's perspective and personality to a large degree.
