This is the FIRST time anyone said, or I heard, to start the brush inside of the hair to 'sample' what you're looking for. I have never had any success with the refine edge brush because all the tutorials I watched just showed them running the brush over the edge. They didn't say to start within the selection. I'd run my brush over the edge and never got a good selection. I followed along this time not expecting miracles, but I got one. Thank you, Aaron.
Im having this problem where when I'm in select in mask, and I use the refine edge tool, when I click on the hair and drag out, it makes that selection transparent, any tips?
Same here. I get a + sign in the circular cursor, where Aaron has a dot (.) inside the cursor... I've copied his settings, tried this tut several times, but i keep on hanging on refining the hair where it adds more mask instead of hair. Changing to the minus sign (-) doesn't do anything either... :-(
Your tutorials are the best , I've gone through many channels but couldn't able to understand much , your this video made me understand about this technique, thank you very much .
I'm always curious as to what people use for hardness and spacing in the refine brush edge tool. I can never strike a happy medium. I'm not even sure what the spacing means for this tool. What's the best setting Aaron? Thanks for posting these awesome 30 Days of Photoshop.
I really do appreciate you for having this 30 days ps tutorial. I have learned a lot. Thank you and God bless you man. What a to help folks get started.
Thanks Aaron. It has always been a head scratcher as to where and when the tool samples from. Do you click on stuff you don’t want, or stuff you do? The tool always seemed to have a mind of its own. Even previous tutorials haven’t been specific as to this behaviour. So thanks for clearing that up. Before now it was easier to just use the old refine edge command. I might trust this a little more now. I do find my photoshop hangs a lot when using select and mask though so that’s annoying. All the best to you. 👍🏻😊
Hi Aron, what settings do you use for edge detection, and which flow do you prefer for editing the mask (in you video we can see first 10% and later 60%) Thank you for these great tutorial!
When I was trying to learn about the editing side of Photography I looked at Phlearn videos because Aaron explains things better than anywhere else I found and now, with 30 days of Photoshop, I'm learning much more. This is a fantastic series for learning about Photoshop and I am enjoying working through them. Thanks for this Aaron.
Now that youtube removed Dislikes so that you can't see if the video is worth watching. Imma just tell you who's watching right now. This one is WORTH IT!
First off, thank you so much for your in-depth instructions! I'm just having trouble with the select and mask function. After I outline the hair and hit output to layer mask button nothing happens with my selection...it looks the same as when I selected the subject initially... Appreciate any advice!
Much respect for you Aaron, I am following your channel from long back and I should say it is the best training channel with clear and crisp information without any sort of drama. And I love the way you speak !
Thank YOU!!!! All the "mask hair tutorials" have never been REAL WORLD examples of what we really need! Difficulty level High type tutorials. And still quick! This is dope!
I hate masking hair and fur but you explained and demonstrated it so easily. Lots of content creators show how to but you explain why without making it too complicated.
Hi Great tutorial about a difficult techniqueThe tip about using overlay has solved a lot of my problems. My working with the Refine Edge tool has also improved. Thank you
As a beginner to photoshop, this helped me tons! Seriously thank you so much for putting in the time to explain, show us, all in a slow manner! Really helps me especially to understand how to do certain things, as well as understanding how the edit was able to happen
I recently upgraded to Adobe CC and, although I've been using the layer mask/refine edge brush method for years now, I still learned quite a few new things from this vid, thanks a lot!
Amazing tutorial, Aaron. I couldn't figure out for the life of me how the "Refine hair" tool worked, but I know now and will save a lot of time from this.
I love getting to the end of each and every one of these tutorials only to realize time and time again that I have not taken a good enough photo for these tools to work effectively
Been trying to learn this technique for years and this finally made sense to me. Also, the way you set the tutorial made it fun and enjoyable to watch unlike other tutorials that make me want to beat my head with my keyboard. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you very much it helps me alot, more that Iam lazy with cutting hair on Photoshop with tutorials and tutorials and with you it was very easy I think I followed you for a reason more videos like this and have good New Year 😊😊😊
I can never get it to look as detailed as this. I don't know if there's not enough contrast against the backgrounds that I'm working with but the edge hairs always end up floating in my images.
Great tutorial Aaron. I watched another hair tutorial by someone else before clicking on your video on cutting out hair. Your video is way better! I found your suggestion of using the brush tool in the Overlay blend mode to fine-tune the mask selection to be so helpful. Thank you!
As usual with all these videos...it works well up to a point..in this case...after using the black overly you say alt and click to get back to the image..it wont go back....so frustrating...
This is the best video I've ever watched on this topic, partly aided by the new Select Subject function but still. Too many tutors show you the complicated way you used to have to do things. This was so much better. I'll watch more from the series.
You are AMAZING! I laps have afro hair and it's SOO hard to cut it out & every single hair tutorial out there is of straight hair with no detail, very well brushed, not even a little frizz
Many photoshop step-by-step tutorials skip over subtle details, but this guy really doesn't miss a beat. And his explanations are crystal clear.
WOW!! Changing the mode of the brush tool to Overlay for masking! Never imagined that and it is brilliant. Thank you Aaron Nace.
Exact same reaction, such an insane tip!
It'll work for GIMP also. Yay. Thanks for the tip.
This is without kidding the best photoshop series on RUclips. Thanks!
Ditto this.
@@TaylorTrask I fully agree with you it's the best photoshop channel simple and straight
Then I'd say you haven't encountered the Asian guy with the unibrow
@@Uzodesign Piximperfect
@@Uzodesign he talks too much.
This is the most important technique I have ever learn from my entire Photoshop journey.

Aaron I've followed you for years. Of all the tutorials on selecting hair in particular, your are the best. Thanks so everything.
ঞ
Incredible! Changing the brush mode to Overlay was totally new for me. It makes a huge difference. Thanks a ton Aron! You are the BEST
Im having this problem where when I'm in select in mask, and I use the refine edge tool, when I click on the hair and drag out, it makes that selection transparent, any tips?
I'm having the same issue.
same here :/
same! this tutorial did not work at all

Best hair silo tutorial out there. Period.
I am super impressed by your teaching method. Very nice tutorial.
I tried using the refine edge brush exactly as you explained, but it keeps erasing the hair instead of bringing the details out.
Viewing in 2024 - this content still relevant! Best explanation of these tools I've seen! - Thank you
.... my... god... i've been tryIng to do this for literal years. and in 5 mins... its perfect.. JEZZZZZZ THANK YOU!

There is option called Refine Hair inside Select and Mask in newer version of PS which does all work for you
What a wonderful teacher, thank you.
I can never get it to look as detailed as this. I don't know if there's not enough contrast against the backgrounds that I'm working with but the edge hairs always end up floating in my images.
Helpful tutorial. Thx. By the way how do you feel with that magic mouse ? Are there any symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrom?
