It's 2021, and about to roll over into 2022. This is THE BEST hair cutout tutorial on RUclips. Not convoluted, clear directions and not to talky. THANK YOU!
I've been using Photoshop for close to 20 years and never bothered how to properly cut out hair, because I never really needed it like I did til today. You just made today's project at work possible for me and in a timely manner to boot! To the complainers that say it's a bad example because it's dark hair on white background --- the same concepts are going to apply, you just might have to take extra steps in masking certain areas or additional work to get your contrast right. Besides, a good cutout means starting with the right photo and not all photos are going to work well. That's just life. Pick one that works.
I've seen many vids that use this masking method, but what you did by adding a new layer which samples from below and using clone stamp to cover the "halo" was brilliant. Thanks!
I agree with one comment below. Doing a cut out from an almost pure white background it´s one of the easiest thing to do, and more with that deep black hair. Bad example, sorry.
I think he just wanted to give the basis of how to do it. Using a busy background for this tutorial would require a lot of detailed instructions that wouldn't work well with a tutorial. I used his method with a image that had a busy background busy background and just added on what I already knew and it worked out fine. Some of the things he mentioned I would have never thought of trying before.
Easy with a white background. The work is already 90% done if you have a white background. The cut out will be peanuts then. But this is a good tutorial to explain some basic stuff
We think that this was more about refining the the mask to offer a resolution to the problem of those fine hairs that basic masking dose not easily fix. But, we have seen several great way to skin a cat. This just happens to be one of them.
This is exactly what I needed. I work with a lot of stock photos like this and was having a difficult time getting the perfect masking on hair. And ignore the negative comments below. You showing how to use channels for masking just gives the designer another tool to use to achieve that perfect selection. Thanks for the tip!
I loved it. The last part, with the clone stamp tool, was the cherry on the top. I already had a few ways to mask hair with good results, but it never occurred to me that I could use the clone stamp like that there. Thanks a lot, kind fella!
Although I'm a fervent Corel Paint Shop Pro user, I learn so many techniques from videos using Photoshop. In time, I would like to learn mastering Adobe Photoshop as well. Thank you so much for the video!
i haven't seen the whole video yet, but man im telling you got the simplest and most wonderful explanation of ptc i ever watched on youtube, keep it up, lucks!
Thanks so much for this tutorial. Seen many tutorials from basic to advanced but for beginners like me you explain the small but important details, Eg Brush tool,Size, hardness etc. The important part for the finish. where other tutorials don't and hair looks smudged when painted. SO thanks for this great tutorial. A*****
I saw a lot of people saying that it was not a good Video. For me it was awesome, of course my pictures are with a white background as well, thank you very much sir!
These tutorial troll me pretty hard. I've yet to see one where the background is NOT a solid colour. Solid colour BG's are relatively easy. I want to see what people do for more complex back grounds.
much much appreciation of your kindness. Your precise and consistent explanations and tutorial made me enjoyed whilst I could follow your clear instructions giving a perfect result. Sooo great! Have a great and gratitude week ahead
Well i agree with the others about the easy background thing...on the bright side I just lean something today and it feels good to increase my Photoshop skills and talent.
This was amazing. I just had a super "fuzzy headed" client who I needed to do a headshot background swap with and was having the darndest time. Followed the steps and it worked perfectly. Thank you!
It is easy to do this when the portrait is on a plain background. But how can I remove the background if it is on a multicolored landscape? Congratulations for the tutorial, we always have something to learn!
I've watched a lot of videos with the same topic as one got, but surely this is the most useful and the best video in category of cutting out images with hairs in PS
Helped a bunch but my subject was a lot more challenging, an American american male with dark black beard on a dark brown background, it worked nicely on the beard but the face/shirt was affected so had to pentool an addiitonal layer from original subject and merge the two. Learnt a new method for future though, thanks!
Hello firstly thank you so much for such a great teaching video and second i have a question actually i'm facing an issue when i'm using foreground color and i select white but it's making black i'm not able to use white color in foreground color please help me as soon as possible
Thanks, very good. Select and mask was for me terrible. I hope this new one this year is better. i like use channels .You chosen very beautiful background for the lady.
Great tutorial. For other viewers, this is just one method, called Channel Pulling and Dansky did a great job of demonstrating Channel Pulling. It can be used for other types of cutouts other then hair. You will still need to learn the various selection methods depending on the situation. Such as, use the pen tool (pro method) for cutting out the body or quick selection tool (hobbyist method).
I've been trying to learn a technique for this forever, have tried many tutorials that never worked. THIS one worked! thank you! The only thing I'm finding is my background, instead of being white/clear, has a grey tone to it, which gets darker the lower down on the photo you go. I can't figure out how to remove that so I have a clear/transparent background (I'm very novice).
I also find that combining techniques: this channel selection method, and then the typical "select and mask" method on a duplicate layer have also served me well.
THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you! Ive been trying to use the refine edge tool but it never works for me. Even against an all opposite color background. I always had fragments left over that i had to cut out. This here...one shot and bam perfect hair! Thank you so much!
from the channel after I select the select the copy blue and go the layers selection and add layer mask, i go back to the original photo but not the black and white
Great tutorial, but if anyone runs into this issue at the end with a not fully transparent background. On the image Use quick selection tool > select subject and delete easy fix.
I have an image where the persons skintone is lighter than the background but his hair is darker. It has been a pain trying to reselect his whole face and parts of his clothing back into the mask but the hair looks really good. Any tips for masking on a darker background?
Hey Densky! I'm a new learner and started following you tutorials. Your works are different from others and clear but if you used command on the screen, it would have been more easier for a begginer. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this information. However, I am using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. and I cant find "create clipping mask." where do I locate it in the version I am using?
It's 2021, and about to roll over into 2022. This is THE BEST hair cutout tutorial on RUclips. Not convoluted, clear directions and not to talky. THANK YOU!
It's really "quick and easy" when you have a easy background and it's already pre-selected.
Aye it’s far more easier with a plain background, but with an actual background it’s far more complex
I've been using Photoshop for close to 20 years and never bothered how to properly cut out hair, because I never really needed it like I did til today. You just made today's project at work possible for me and in a timely manner to boot!

agree
And it's not fast. For white background select and mask or refine edge is much faster.
You need to type in specifics for that kind of tutorial. Specifically videos that target cutting out hair from busy backgrounds.
Bad Example.. i agree

Nice Dansky...I"m almost back...but na hour everyday in Photoshop and Illustrator with you teaching is wonderful... thank you again ! Rogerio

Awesome. Best I've seen that makes it possible to do this on my own without getting lost by all the technical details.
Although I'm a fervent Corel Paint Shop Pro user, I learn so many techniques from videos using Photoshop. In time, I would like to learn mastering Adobe Photoshop as well. Thank you so much for the video!

Use overlay blend mode on the brush in the mask so you don’t have to be careful at the edges
Thank you so much! Great video
You're very welcome Liza!

thank you for this video, i needed for my lessons that I couldn't understand, thank you!

Very good explain about complex background removing.
Excellent Process. Very Easy and Quick.
I also find that combining techniques: this channel selection method, and then the typical "select and mask" method on a duplicate layer have also served me well.

Hey Densky!
I'm a new learner and started following you tutorials. Your works are different from others and clear but if you used command on the screen, it would have been more easier for a begginer.
Thanks.
