I am a hummus lover through and through. That means, when I want it I'm gonna get it - regardless of whether or not I happen to have the right ingredients on hand.
I know what you might be thinking-what kind of home cook doesn't have chickpeas on hand?
And you're right. Its very irresponsible and I hope never to wind up in this situation again, but hey. Nobody's perfect.
In this episode I show you how to make red lentil hummus. Its just as simple as making any other hummus, but I've taken a few liberties here and swapped out multiple ingredients-as well as adding some spices for fun.
This video will show you how to make hummus at home, with whatever you have lying around.
    Handy right?
    A little about me:
I'm Paula, and I started How To Make Dinner because dinnertime is my favourite time of day. (Except on weekends, when it's breakfast, but you get the point.) I love winding down at the end of the day with a good cooking and eating sesh.
I love dinnertime SO MUCH, but I know not all of you feel the same way. Feeding ourselves and our families can be stressful. So I started this channel and my blog to help give you easy dinner ideas for enjoyable home cooking with less fuss. That goes for isolation cooking too, which we can all relate with right now!
My dinnertime strategy - Keep it simple and delicious, and don't use too many pots and pans. Learn to cook with me and you'll be the master of quick and easy dinners that will please everyone.

I have made Hummus with Pistachios / pinenuts / beetroot / black sesame seeds and they are all good. If I am using a 400g can of chickpeas the pre-cooked beetroot used would be half the size of my fist - twice the size of an egg..

Also, for Tahini. If you live in an area like me, it's QUITE expensive, the equivalent of about 20-30 USD for a fairly small jar. But in the Asian foods section of the supermarket, there is a type called "Tahina" which is like 4 times the size for around 3-5 USD... I am not sure why there is always such huge price differences, but I find the same thing with spices as well... little tiny 40-75 gram jars in the spice section cost an equivalent of 4-7 USD, but then in the Asian section it's a 600 gram bag for like 2 USD.

Neat! Chickpeas DESTROY my gut because of the fiber (I have ulcerative colitis, so that's fun🙄) but I've noticed lentils don't have the same effect, so I definitely want to try making hummus this way. Yum!

It's such a great idea, I love lentils so much, but now I'm going to love it even more that's for sure. I have some split yellow peas at home right now, and I have never cooked anything with it yet, so why not starting with some hummus, right?

@@HowToMakeDinner Hi there! It took me pretty long with this yellow pea hummus, but at the end I did it last week. It was just delicious with some turmeric inside, and it was pretty close to red lentil hummus in taste. Anyway, this yellow peas took me more time to cook than I expected, so red lentils works better for making a quick hummus. Hope you're doing well!

I tried it and it's really nice I also made some with split peas instead of chickpeas and that was amazing I might mix the two together because lentils can be too smooth and split peas can be too course but they definitely got more protein and nutrients than chickpeas

Sumac has a lively sour citrusy flavor independent of of the flavor of za'atar.

Its such a wonderful thing! Basically it's a Middle Eastern spice blend, that usually has thyme, sumac, sesame seeds, and some other stuff. I'd say to visit your local Middle Eastern market, but unless they do delivery... you might be looking at Amazon!

    • @HowToMakeDinner

Could you use a different kind of nut or seed butter? Sunflower maybe? If not, I’d just suggest you leave it out. You could try adding in some Greek Yogurt for creaminess

I've heard if you don't have/can't find tahini, you can microwave peanut butter to get it to the same consistancy.

    • @jamesvoigt7275

Peanut butter has a rather strong flavor, but as she said in the video, you can use other nut and seed butters. I like cashew or almond.
