Johnson faces resignation calls over 'unlawful' Parliament suspension - BBC News

  • Supreme Court: The highest court in the United Kingdom has delivered a devastating ruling for Boris Johnson and his government.
    Eleven justices of the UK Supreme Court agreed unanimously that the Prime Minister's decision to ask the Queen to suspend Parliament for 5 weeks was unlawful.
    The judges took the view that the suspension was designed to frustrate Parliament from scrutinising the government as the Brexit deadline approaches.
    And they declared that the suspension had had an extreme effect on our democracy.
    The House of Commons will now resume its business on Wednesday morning. Boris Johnson who's been in New York at the United Nations says he 'strongly disagrees' with the ruling.
    His opponents, including Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, have called on him to resign.
    Huw Edwards unravels today’s events on the BBC News at Ten with the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg, home editor Mark Easton, legal correspondent Clive Coleman, Scotland correspondent Lorna Gordon and political correspondent Alex Forsyth.

    • @dmgib5239
      @dmgib5239 4 года назад

      @abcun17- You are an ignorant fool. The lower court ruled had already ruled Johnson's prorogation lawful. This case only went to the Supreme Court on appeal. Are you saying the judges who originally ruled in favor of what Johnson did are guilty of colluding with Johnson to help him "lie, cheat, and break the law," as you claim he did? Name the law that Johnson broke? The truth is that no laws were broken. In reality, the Supreme Court actually legislated from the bench - which means they created a new law here - which they aren't supposed to do because the public can't hold them accountable for their decisions. They just set an entirely new precedent, effectively granting their court with sweeping new powers that gives them the right to overrule purely political decisions. For all of you who are cheering for this ruling, I ask what did you really gain? What has Parliament done since they came back? The answer is zero. They just want to make sure they prevent a General Election because the majority of them are going to lose their seats. We all know it.

    The wingnut seems to be suggesting that he will proceed with his plans despite the objections of the parliament being set into law. There are a significant number of Britons who seem to want a dictatorship as they support him. Some years ago a Russian ruler said that the U.S. and the West in general would be destroyed from within. That seems to be happening. In the UK, at least, the Supreme Court seems to be supportive of Democracy while in the U.S. the Supreme Court has ruled that politics out weighs the ideals of Democracy and a system where the politicians choose their voters to ensure their retention of power is what the American experiment in democratic government is to be.
