Kude Craft is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that has been passed down through generations of joiners since the 6th century. While it is commonly known as “Kumiko” in other regions, in Kagawa, it has been uniquely preserved as “Kude” (/ku-de/).
Originally, these skills were developed to create and decorate Shoji screens, a cornerstone of traditional Japanese interiors. However, as the use of Shoji screens has declined, with fewer Japanese homes including traditional rooms, Kude Craft faces the challenge of adapting to modern times. Today, its survival depends on bespoke orders placed by those who value its rare beauty and unmatched precision.
