Believe it or not this brings back a lot of memories for me. When I first decided I wanted to learn to play drums (age 5) I had a similar setup although not as elaborately put together given my age at the time. Only major difference is I didn’t have an actual snare so I used an old original Nintendo nes that I had that didn’t work because it made a similar sound to a snare lol. Oddly enough in your video you kept referencing a TKO drum kit which was my first actual drum kit when I was about 8. Mine was blue. It was given to me by a friend of my dads and served me for many years of learning. Great job with your video. Really hit me right in the feels. Lol
1nce again a wealth of knowledge, that probably more than half the people who play drums don't care,or take the time to learn! I love this channel, been playing for 30yrs and still learning stuff about the internal workings of kits,cymbals,etc....Thanks man, most appreciated!!
Iv'e been subscribed to rdavidr for a year in a half and then I saw this video pop up in my recommended. That's when I remembered, this was the first video that Iv'e watched by him. And that's what made me fall in love with his videos because I like wood shopping and I play the drums.
connor king open your kick drum and fill it to the middle with old clothes or something like that. i did that with mine and now it sounds more like a decent drum. 😂😂 hope you improve that sound bro
Connor King I have a used pearl forum kit and it sounds amazing.(it's the one on my profile picture). It sounded ok when I first got it, but when I put new heads on it and tuned it up, it sound great. All it takes is some good heads and good tuning to make any kit sound good!!
This one pushed me over the edge - got a tenth patron now brother! 7 bucks ain't much but rent is expensive, hope you can get yourself a new set of sticks on my dime every now and then!
Good video! It’s Always a good idea to utilize locking washers or aircraft type locking nuts on those assemblies. This prevents hardware from vibrating loose over time. Thanks again for the video.
Hey David, I was curious if you've ever thought about converting an acoustic kit to a electric kit? That would be an awesome series to watch. Big fan of your videos!
Awesome video! Great idea! I really could have used a setup like this awhile back. Way late in the game but one idea i had would be fold-away spurs on the sides of the case to help stabilize it.
Finally, I've been waiting for this video ever since the suitcase drum set part one came out. I've been looking into making one myself and this has given me some good ideas to work off of. Keep making great videos!!!
This was a fantastic build David! You have built so many things for your drums so maybe one day you could try and make your own drums and see how they sound!
I made my first drum set in High school using an oval suitcase for the base drum and round ice cream cartons from 31 Flavors reinforced on the bottom with duct tape and flipped over for the Tom's. The Tom's were mounted on the suitcase with Tinkertoys. For the snare I put one of the cartons on a metal TV tray placed on a styrofoam ice chest and put metal toy coins on the tray to produce the buzz of the snares. My stepfather made a bass drum pedal from pieces of wood, wire, a spring, etc. I had one cheap real cymbal and another one I made from a can lid and strips of metal, and a camera tripod and music stand for two cymbal stands.
Nice one. You know what would be pretty freaking cool? If all the components including drums fit inside the suitcase and could be pulled out and then mounted for a true travelers kit!
Hey man great job,I made my own suitcase kit a few years ago, very similar but with bass drum spurs to balance it out, and fitted a sixteen inch head and skin as a kick drum, sounds great and saves my back aswell :-) :-) :-) keep up the good work.
@@rdavidr this is a really cool idea, if you'd ever been to keywest they have a sunset celebration and everybody does performances on the sidewalk, this would be perfect to fit some drum besides steel drum or bongos (which are still cool) like everybody does .
An Idea would be to use rubber or foam padding in the drum and cymbal mounts works good. Also the possibility of engineering small portable leg brackets on the suitcase for stability. Great drum kit!
This is actually really cool! The kit itself only has one problem, and that's that I thought the hihats were a little too tight. Maybe they should be loosened to give them a bit more tone. They kinda just sound like two pieces of tin being hit together. Any way, the rest of it is super nice!
I love how lair was spelled layer 😂 And honestly, I think the shaking of the kit which makes the cymbals make some noise gives the kit and drumming character.
For the kick drum causing the cymbals to activate, you could try rubber sleeves for your cymbal stands. It won't help with the ride (splasher?), but will dampen enough.
Amazing work!!! I don't remember how I came across your video, but I do a lot of DIY and guitar luthiery stuff and I very much enjoyed seeing the process of your build. I may try to do something like this some day to get more skilled in drum stuff. The kit sounds great man! very raw, cool jazzy/hip-hop type kit, I like!
now you're ready to go out and do some busking, video yourself doing it, and put it on youtube with a title like: "best drummer EVER, in the hood, gone sexual, gone wrong."
It sounds like a different beater might allow the sound to come through on the bass drum more. The rubber against the hard plastic seems to be cancelling each other out, to a degree. That wood beater you made would probably be ideal, in all honesty. But mad props, this is awesome!
you should wire in 2-3 piezo transducers in various places on the inside of the drum and run them through a cheap acoustic guitar preamp pedal (you can find one for $20 on amazon). It has EQ controls and you have a direct out that you can plug into a mixer for playing live.
I tried the contact paper thing with a full kit I have and I love it. also, the reason that one mount won't fit on the boom arms in because tama booms have a smaller diameter than most other booms

i started drumming at 5 too bro sick

Mad skills on all levels playing, concept, fabrication video editing. You are truly a renaissance man. Mad respect bro!
BRO ITS SPELLED "LAIR" NOT LAYER. and yes it fits, stop asking.... see here ruclips.net/video/23wYmkbBdiQ/видео.html
i do the same exact thing with contact paper lol
well you have secret LAYERS of drum parts it appears. lol
Hah!
you're the man !!! great video !!!
rdavidr I'm a huge fan.
"Secret Layer" cracks me up. I love it!
+rdavidr Easily the cleanest and most innovative suitcase drum set I've seen up to date. 10/10. I'm starting to believe you are a wizard, sir.
I'm surprised this turned out so well, it really sounds nice. Great job.
Suitcase drum set sounds better than my normal drum kit 😢
connor king open your kick drum and fill it to the middle with old clothes or something like that. i did that with mine and now it sounds more like a decent drum. 😂😂 hope you improve that sound bro

I agree with that, the sound from your drums is mostly going to be based on heads and tuning.
Tune the res tighter than the batter
lol

This was the first video of yours I ever watched. Blessed may it be eternally.

0:26 If I had a dollar for every time I've said that
SPAZZO babiez wow 😂😂
Id have exactly 0 dollars
must b pretty broke 😬😬
You'd owe money?
How much are you in debt right now
This is unbelievably impressive and it sounds AMAZING!

Looks fun. Us drummers NEED something small and mobile like this. We all end up truck and hatchback drivers bc of drums.
Finally, I've been waiting for this video ever since the suitcase drum set part one came out. I've been looking into making one myself and this has given me some good ideas to work off of. Keep making great videos!!!
I want to make one of these for going to my Dad's house and playing. Thanks for the build. I was pretty clueless as to how to approach it.
This was a fantastic build David! You have built so many things for your drums so maybe one day you could try and make your own drums and see how they sound!

That is a possibility if you use a larger suitcase.
epic! I made mine with a floor tom head where the kick head strikes, it reduces the shaking a bit and looks nice

I didn't think that tom would sound as good as it did. :)
I have a friend who uses a suitcase set up but he opted for his Snare, .Hi-Hat and Cymbal stands. His set up sounds great.
Me personally I would rock the 100 rivet cymbal on that kit, because why the hell not. Cool build.
I thought you would be able to like put all of the stuff into the suitcase, but that's cool enough!
it all fits, theres another vid check the description
rdavidr ooohhh I didn't check sorry
Oh you, got replied by the Legend! SICK!

Love this channel. It's saved my drumming ass so many times.
fyi: l a y e r = L A I R lol. You have inspired me to make a SUITCASE kit for my rockabilly band. THX for all the GREAT VIDS!!
I transcribed that funky 16th note groove you were playing, and I have to 'shed it next time I'm sitting in the throne! Good stuff.
I really like the way that he cut down the depth of a rack tom using a table saw. Now I want to try that!
That thing looks like so much fun to mess around on. Great job dude!

Your utility blade skills are masterful.
I'm so envious of your drum space, workshop, and secret storage room. Great videos, though. Very inspiring!
I love how lair was spelled layer 😂 And honestly, I think the shaking of the kit which makes the cymbals make some noise gives the kit and drumming character.
Again the music itself is great. I love the videos. The music doubles it. Best out of my subs!
The suitcase bass actually sounds better than anything else! Not bad!
For the kick drum causing the cymbals to activate, you could try rubber sleeves for your cymbal stands. It won't help with the ride (splasher?), but will dampen enough.
I just finished playing my drum set and then a new rdavidr video,
today's has been a good day

Imagine a giant suitcase, and an businessman takes of this kit of his suitcase and starts playing some killer drum fills.
Dude this thing is awesome!! Also, I think I have that ching ring now. #famouschingring

This thing is awesome, all those people complaining about weight should just stick to buckets and pans. Hat's off

Portable high hat thing is such a sick idea!
Very creative and cool looking. Fantastic job!!
I watch your videos all of the time
Drummer my self...
That's just bad ass!! In fact, I want to make one now. All your videos are the shit. I watch all the time looking for new drum hacks.
Your videos seem to relax me to no end, and I love it!
Wonderful. Incredibly creative! Thank you for sharing. Wishing you continued success.
You are gifted in building things brovo
10/10 wanna build this for a small jam sesh with a friend
This suitcase drumset sounds like it came from an old school hip hop song. Nice.
That secret layer is so cool!
that suitcase sounds so good
You very realistically could throw all the hardware in that suitcase, a busker’s best friend!
that was a clever trick to cut the 1/2" off of the edge of contact paper. thanks!
he inspired me and now i'm on the way to film a music video ft. my travel kit
I'm digging that songo groove my dude!
David! use a 14" heavy hi hat bottom as a ride. some heavy bottom hats sound like rides! maybe add a lil tape but theyll work well! awesome vid
Yes!!! I've been waiting for the remote hi-hat mod since you told me about its existence.
👍👍👍👍👍 that tom tom sounds killer👍👍👍👍👍👍 great build man
daaaaamn so cool men i'm excited for the next part with the min hit-hat stand
Dont forget to show us how all things gonna fit in the suitcase.Nice work btw.
It sounds like a different beater might allow the sound to come through on the bass drum more. The rubber against the hard plastic seems to be cancelling each other out, to a degree. That wood beater you made would probably be ideal, in all honesty. But mad props, this is awesome!
We need to see this kit again in one of your future videos.
you're a genius BRO !!! well done
How Can You Not Like This ! Love it Bro . Keep it up . God Bless!
you should wire in 2-3 piezo transducers in various places on the inside of the drum and run them through a cheap acoustic guitar preamp pedal (you can find one for $20 on amazon). It has EQ controls and you have a direct out that you can plug into a mixer for playing live.
wow almost 40K! Right on man!
Very cool! I don't have the patience to even polish my kit, let alone make one!
this guy deservs soooo many more subs. great work man keep it up
Bro thats good enough to do some. Street music!👍✌
That's amazing, dude! perfect for busking. I'd love to take that suitcase kit and hop on a train and travel as a hobo drummer lol.
David, man, your beard is awesome.
Really like the sound of that tom!
Sweet songo beat. The kit turned out great!
I tried the contact paper thing with a full kit I have and I love it. also, the reason that one mount won't fit on the boom arms in because tama booms have a smaller diameter than most other booms
We all love what you do
Love the initiative and creativity. Great job bro
Great kit. Now you need a suitcase kit where the drums and cymbals fit in the suitcase. Along with a tuxedo.
Mike Barker they do fit he has a video
This should be a kickstarter
greetings from Chile, Rdavidr!
nice project!
Your videos are always so fun to watch! Keep it up dude 👌✌👍
Secret LAIR?? Secret LAYER? The secret extra layer of hoops. Nice job converting those drums. At least you did not call it a "hack".
Trying to build one of these myself. Great video!
The p4 is a great choice for a single head tom. Holds low tuning, and cuts moo tones.
This is TIGHT! Very nice dude!
Very cool build. Great editing too.
Thanks!
Mmmm that tom..... It sounds amazing.
That's awesome man, youre so creative bro
This would be a great busking kit!
Power Stroke 4 is probably my favorite Remo head.
Lair, Layer...Lay Her. Dude, your creative skills are Player!
