    I'm a NYC commercial photographer and just wrapped my first day of shooting an assignment with the Tamron 24-70g2. So far I'm pretty impressed. I was able to nail a couple of shots using just available light of patients in a healthcare facility shooting at 1/50 3.2. I would have never attempted to shoot at the speed with my Canon lens. I bought the lens to gain the advantage of image stabilization, and it works! That might not seem like a particularly slow speed to some, but on a professional gig I can't afford to take a chance and blow a shot, I don't get second chances. The lens is not flawless, I missed focus on a couple of frames when I was pretty sure I had my focus point set properly. In the back of my mind I'm going to be extra careful with my focusing, more so than with my older trusted Canon. Also, in some bounced flash situations I felt the images were almost too sharp and contrasty. I'm going to alter some of my lighting tomorrow to compensate for the extra crispness I'm noticing in the images vs. my older Canon.Note to you pixel peepers out there, this is a very sharp lens!

      Great feedback. I definitely recommend doing some lens calibration to help with front/backfocus issues. If you will invest the time, I suspect you will get great focus results. But the image stability is excellent on the lens, and it is optically sound.

    This is by far the most comprehensive and legit review comparison of these lenses. After watching the first video, I had been anticipating the 2nd part to decide which lens to invest in.

    i own the tamron 24/70G2 lens and the sigma 24/70 art lens. both Nikon version..
    the tamron version is by far a better lens.
    I have been a big fan of the Arts series...personally possess the 50, 85, 135 ART and they're magnificent.
    however, presently the tamron 24/70G2 is the best in its category including nikon, canon, sony, tokina (extremely underrated actually).
    At sub $1200 it's actually a steal......well done TAMRON for producing in my opinion "lens of the year"

    Thanks Dustin. Seems the new Tamron is fairing well. My own tests with regard to the VC in the G2 suggest real world consistant sharp hand held photos get about three and a half stops of image stabilisation. This is with the lens in its out of the box default. I understand the five stops of VC is only achievable if you set the lens ( via the USB dock ) to only engage as the shutter is pressed. I don't yet possess the USB dock so I cannot verify that to be true. I was pleased to see the bokeh has improved, I still think the Sigma has it beat when it comes to specular highlights given the onion ring effect is still in evidence. Auto focus as you tested is excellent, accurate and fast, I have no complaints about the speed of focus aqusition on my Nikon mount copy ☺ I am also pleased to see the improvements over the original VC Tamron are clear to see. I won't deny that I was concerned that in pre ordering the G2 that Tamron had simply put the original VC version in a nice new body, clearly that isn't the case. Tamron is certainly doing a great job of late and that only gives me more confidence going forward regards further Tamron lens purchases ( I added their 15 to 30 f2.8 a few days after getting the G2 ) 😃

  • @wallstreetoneil

    When comparing vignette at 70mm, you were using 1/30th for the Tamron and 1/15th for the Sigma. Also looking at all the vignetting tests, it would appear that over all light transition with the Tamron is better than with the Sigma - and I think this might explain 'some' of what you were seeing when you said that you preferred the 'contrast' of the Sigma vs the Tamron at certain FL (50-70mm if I remember from the last video). When I saw your comment on this in the last video, it reminded me in a different way of the Canon crushing the black issue from the 5DSR when compared to the A7Rii or Nikon (in this case a DR issue) but in the case of the Sigma, my guess is that the 'contrast' you preferred (and most people like contrast) is likely at least somewhat explained from a light transition issue (not fully but some for sure). The Tamron is looking like a great lens with its flat focal plane and excellent IS. As an aside, I noticed the light transmission issue when I purchased the Tamron 85 1.8 when comparing it to the Canon 70-200 F2.8 II at 85mm as it is almost half a stop brighter than the Canon at the same aperture. Great video as usual. Wish I knew you were doing this as I would have shipped you my Canon 24-70 F2.8 II for a few days for testing. Paul

    Nice review continuation! A suggestion:
    -Maybe comparing stabilisation after allowing it to activate properly would be more fair. Also, a higher sample size would be good, especially given the inconsistent results with Sigma. You don't have to show all that, but maybe mention results in the next video, if you decide to do that.

    Dustin, thank you so much for an amazingly comprehensive and accurate comparison!!
    I am 90-95% convinced that I need to upgrade from my Tamron 24-70 "G1" (that has served me very well), to the G2 version.
    One thing I use it a lot for is video on my a6500 via the Sigma MC-11 adapter. For that reason, I was wondering if you might be able to do a quick comparison of the image stabilization characteristics of these three lenses in video mode (on any camera)?
    The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow would be if you were able to use all three of these lenses on an a6500/MC-11 in video mode to check AF performance! :-) I have found the MC-11 to provide surprisingly great video AF performance with the Sigma 18-35 (Canon EF mount), but predictably the Tamron 24-70 "G1" doesn't fare well at all..

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      I've shot some video on a 5D IV using both versions. The G2 is much quieter to focus, and the VC is quieter, but its still no substitute for a real stabilizing rig, in my opinion. It helps, but don't expect gimbal type results.

    Thanks for the putting in the time, talent, and energy necessary to craft such a solid review. I've been tracking the availability of the Tamron G2/Nikon this week at Amazon: mostly "unavailable" all week until Friday, when a string of retailers appeared to quickly liquidate small allotments in rapid succession. B&H anticipates stock next week. The Canon mount seems to be easier to come by at the moment. Comprehensive reviews like yours might add to supply shortages!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      I think the Nikon first party options might be perceived as less competitive (and even more expensive). Plus, Nikon mount was first to the market and more of the early reviews focused on it.

    • @deanbaird
      @deanbaird 7 лет назад

      The price/performance of Nikon's 24-70 VR seems to have left considerable room in the market for third party lenses. And the Tamron G2 seems to be the lens Nikon should have made. Nikon's newest 70-200 VR (at $2800) opens that market wide for strong competitors like Tamron, too.

Seems like it is. Also did you notice any focus breathing issues? The old tamron suffered a lot from focus breathing. Thats the second very important thing Im looking, the old tamron doesnt seem to be a true 24-70 at medium and close focus distances. It would be awesome to see a focus breathing comparison between the old tamron, the new, the sigma and the old nikon and compare the frame at varius focus distances and the same mm. With tamron I was never able to shoot as close as with the nikon. Cheers :)

    Hey Dustin, awesome review, thank you so much for it! I was wondering though how they fare in terms of focus consistency. Will you also do some real world, non-tripod shots with them? And if not, can you at least comment based on your experience in using the two lenses weather the focus consistency and tracking are on point? That is sort of what can make or break one of them being the better lens since they are so close. I've watched some other reviews and some people had issues with one of them not nailing focus every time and/or hunting for no reason even in full daylight and focusing on a high contrast static object. Have you had any problems of that sort during your time with them? Thank you so much in advance!

      I don't really have time to do the full dock calibration with these lenses right now. My experience (at least with the Tamron) states that if you invest the time, you are rewarded with very good focus results. It's way too big a time investment to do as a reviewer on a lens that you return in a couple of weeks, though.

    Wait. Isn’t it camera shake and not motion blur when the user introduces motion? I mean the wall ain’t moving

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад

      It depends on where you are applying the term. In the actual image, it is all motion blur (whether from the subject of movement of the camera). If you are looking at causality, then camera shake would apply to movement of the camera and and motion would apply to the subject. It's all a problem with motion, actually.

    Thank you for your comprehensive reviews! They are really helpful.
    Although, I'm getting a little bit confused: I was into buying either the Tamron or the Sigma 24-70, but while diving into your other reviews, I got hooked on (the image quality of) the Milvus 85 mm. They may not att all be comparable - the 24-70 is a much more versatile lens - but I had been looking before at the Sigma 85 f/1.4 Art as a complement to my Sigma 50 and 24 mm Art lenses. I am a visual artist and a real estate photographer. I use Nikon and the Nikkor 16-35 f/4 for real estate and am planning to swap it for the Tamron 15-30. (Thanks to your reviews!) But for my artistic work, and documenting art in general, I foremost use the Sigma 50 mm - which I sometimes experience to be a little bit short. 24-70 @ 70 mm might still be a little bit short. In my artistic work I strive after the best possible image quality, rendering of colours and resolution and here the Milvus comes in. I don't have the money for the Otus 85, but Milvus might be in the pocket. Unfortunately I can spend my bucks only once. What to do...? I already cover a good deal of the 24-70 range and I could extend it with an 85 mm, but then 24-70 is no longer an option.
    Best regards from Sweden!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      I use 35mm and 85mm primes over a 24-70, personally. It sounds like you have a lot of primes on the lower end of the focal range, so an 85mm is a solid option. I like the Milvus image quality better in an absolute sense, but the ART lens may be more practical for having AF.

    That's incredibly peculiar of the Sigma's OS performance. Makes me hopeful of how far firmware cane make for really slow shutter speeds. Having said that why the heck would it not work as well at 1/15 vs the 1/6?

      yes, thanks but what would be a good alternative that would deliver a very sharp image? thanks

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад

      There's the rub. There has been very little recent development for a quality APS-C standard zoom. The Canon EF-S 17-55mm is okay, but is frankly very dated. This is the Tamron equivalent bhpho.to/2PZ0iH0. It's not bad, but the build and focus system is not as sophisticated as Tamron's newer lenses.

    It is pretty sad to learn that the Sigma didn't maintain the previous tradition of the Art series with excellent optic performance. However, those photos taken by Sigma in this review provides more 3D pop-up effect to my eyes.

      Łukasz - This G2 is the only non-Nikkor lens I own and I’m very happy with the purchase. I never bought the Nikkor 24-70 because I thought it’s performance was pretty mediocre for its price.

    • @Notblind808
      @Notblind808 5 лет назад +1

      PinchnerHouse I have both Nikon 24-70 2.8, VR and non VR. Also own the Tamron 24-70 G2. Nikon VR is meh, not as sharp. Nikon 24-70 is a tad sharper than the Tamron at 2.8. At f4 it’s sharper or stands with the Nikon. I use the Tamron and people borrow the Nikon’s. 🤘 Tamron is like 600 dollars cheaper than the non VR and over a thousand cheaper than the VR version.

      Thanks Dustin! I notice Lumu has been reaching out to online photography Key Opinion Leaders lately which could help us make more well-informed decisions on whether it's worth its price tag. Specifically how it holds up against Sekonic's top L858D, given the Lumu's bonus colour metering functionality over dedicated light meters.
      Personally I'd be interested to know whether the Sekonic's built-in 1 degree reflective spot meter plus optional radio flash trigger capabilities are absolutely worth (to mirrorless, travelling amateurs like me) the price premium over something as simple and portable as a Lumu Power.
      Ideal for European buyers as Lumu is only €299 and can be shipped tariff-free within the EU straight from their base in Slovenia.

      That's an area where Tamron has made serious strides.

    • @CameraMystique

      After a trip I took with my daughter where she was taking lots of pics from the car (while I was driving) and while walking, the Nikon 70-200 f4 VR proved much more efficient in VR at 150-200mm than the Tamron was at around 50mm.
      The Nikon 16-35 was also very good.
      Taking pics while walking was the ultimate test - the worst was the Tamron 35mm, although a very good lens other than that.
      The 24-70 Tamron was unpredictable in VR (sometimes yes, sometimes nothing). The Nikon 70-200 was spot on (zero shaken pics) in 100% of shots. The Nikon 16-35 was almost there (I'd say 8/10 unshaken pics).
      In video, the Nikons were very good (but not perfect), but the Tamron zoom was "jerking" when panning (like dozens of little "steps" inside the panning scene, I don't know how you call that).
      The Tamron didn't have the jerking of the previous model in stills. That's an improvement. But practically I'd say not more than 2 stops VR (I'd give the Nikon 70-200 4 stops easily, this cheap Nikon zoom is an immense surprise, given that I tested its sharpness (resolution only) as good as the Zeiss 100 milvus).

    • @CameraMystique
      @CameraMystique 7 лет назад

      An excellent review by the way, congratulations. So far I'd say you are among the 2-3 most reliable reviewers.
      One thing that I would personally like to see (it would save me lots of money in rentals) would be a section inside the test, where you test the "dimensionality" (item separation) of lenses against the Milvus series.

  • @maxfactor4209
    @maxfactor4209 7 лет назад

    the price difference between these lenses and the Canon is much less compare to the previous G1 tamron. I have the old tamron and if I want to upgrade ill go for canon. my only concern is AF consistency with 3rd party lenses.

    • @setaside2
      @setaside2 7 лет назад

      max factor there's a $550 difference between a Tamron G2 and the EF 24-70 2.8 L II. And that's after Canon USA's rebate. Assuming you won't be buying grey market, that's a pretty serious difference.

    • @maxshean2607
      @maxshean2607 7 лет назад

      You can get a used Canon though, but not a used Tamron for quite a while. So if you find a used lens in mint condition, you are pretty much on par.

      My Nikon G1 copy completely failed for 3 days once & occasionally a few times since but only for maybe 10-15 seconds. Shooting happily one minute, no AF the next & as suddenly as it stopped it started again. I am only looking at 1st Party lenses for either a new D850 or Canon 5 D 4 . I can believe the Nikon Rep whom I met that there has been a rise in the number of instances of this happening with Tamron on Nikon bodies. After my experience while fine mostly I can't really trust 3rd Party anymore.

    • @setaside2
      @setaside2 7 лет назад +1

      I shoot only on Nikon bodies and, as the rep, have every single Tamron lens currently in production. Never once had any issues and I shoot all over the country and in extremely varied conditions. Let's just say we're quite used to making lenses that work well for Nikon. Your rep doesn't have a clue. And I'll be happy to meet him in person to discuss his further education.
