This happened to one of our chickens. I was horrified. I have never seen this. I bathed her in Epsom salt and vinegar water two times a day. The first day was so bad. I got as many maggots as I possibly could with the first bath. I continued four more days. Our chicken was able to heal. The vinegar seemed to kill the maggots quicker than the salt.
Fly strike is one of the most traumatic and terrible things I've ever seen. It's like something out of a horror movie and our babies never deserve to go through that. 😭 I will NEVER underestimate a poopy butt again, my god. I'm so glad your little guy's recovering!!! Sending love. 💗
Im only 3 minutes and 37 seconds in and im tearing up. Not only for the situation but for your amazing friend and her dedication to your animals. What a blessing to have someone like that in your life.
I’ve treated fly strike many times, a lifetime of farming. Dettol disinfectant works a charm to kill them them then use an antiseptic or antibiotic if the damage is bad. Vaseline mixed with Sulphur powder in a stiff paste is a good dressing as it stays on and kills fungus too
Hey everyone! My hen had a very deep wound, you could see her spine and a fly laid eggs. I rinsed it thoroughly with saline and poured 50% DMSO solution on it twice a day for 5 days. The flies didn't land on it because they are afraid of the smell of DMSO and after 5 days the wound was completely healed and the hen returned to the flock healthy.
Ty Dalia. Yes a miracle mr robot. The Lord gave us our animals to love. And you are the best caretaker of His animals. Ty chickenlandia!! God bless you and your flock
Fly strike is so absolutely horrific! I was in shock when it happened to one of my Serama girls, I cleaned her up as best as I could, it is so traumatizing for all involved. She passed away, I was not able to save her. I have a white Splash Polish girl who from the time she was a baby her butt has always been dirty. I’ve taken to placing her in a big bowl of warm water each week or every few days to keep her clean I’ve also noticed if I run a oscillating fan in their coop flies don’t gather I’m am so happy Mr Robot made it!!!! ❤️💓💗💖
I lost my older hen recently to flystrike. It was horrifying to watch her death. She was elderly and already slowly going down hill, and had a poopy butt, which we had been bathing her for. But it hit so fast and her feathers were completely hiding the horror underneath. We tried to flush her, but it was too late. My first chicken loss.
OMG I had to pause mid video and go check my chickies, make the fly spray I’ve been wanting to, and cuddle the Silkie Marshmello in my lap for awhile. I needed those cuddles for strength to finish watching and see Mr Robot. Yay a new robot fam, beep boop! Flystrike has been my worst fear since getting birds, and my husband doesn’t seem to care when I say flies are a big issue. EEK!
Ooh, could you tell us what you use to Make the fly spray ? I saw a video recently of a woman using home made fly spray on her cows but wasn't sure if it would be safe for chickens
As a nurse I thought maggots only ate dead tissue. Clinically raised maggots have been used in in medical facilities for necrotic tissue debridement on humans (because they don't eat the live tissue). Little did I know there a different kinds of maggots and some eat live tissue...yikes! Your video gave me some science education. Thanks!
Oh, Dalia... first, virtual hugs. For so many, many reasons. You are my main chicken educator. The information is top-notch, presented in such a kind and understanding way. Thank you for your work and for sharing all of this.
I'm so happy that Mr. Robot is alive and well, and that he has 2 new wives. You have such an amazing friend and Mr. Robot is very blessed that he had both of you and his vet on his side doing everything right for him. Thank you for sharing this Dalia!🙏🥰🦆🙌❤
Just lost our first chicken to fly strike. It was very traumatic. Fortunately the rest of our hens were ok. We washed all the rest, redid their coop with fresh wood chips and fresh chips on their immediate area. Made sure there was Apple cider vinegar in their water, and I think we got lucky with our remaining birds. Tough lesson to learn. Thanks for the info.😊
I keep flies away naturally... Aka I have over a dozen spiders around my coop. Plus a bunch of frogs from the small pond. I don't mind the spiders, except when I'm walking around at night and accidently walk right into their webs.
My goodness woman! I am forever grateful for this. Thank you for sharing and educating me. I will now have it in my arsenal for health of our ducks. Enjoyed the "edge of your seat" conclusion. ❤ Happy Mr. Robot ending with his girls.❤

We lost 2 ducks in 2 weeks to fly strike this summer (and one turkey to ants). It's horrific, and I didn't know how to treat it better than flushing and "picking". But when there are just so many literally climbing out of the skin in MULTIPLE locations... it was more human for us to put them down. We don't have livestock or avian vets around us, so it's all on us. So traumatic Thank you for the advice. I'll be adding some of these things to my medicine chest.
Yes, my vet told me that it can get so bad so fast that the maggots will literally get under the skin and infest multiple places within the body. So awful! I’m sorry it happened to your ducks. ❤️
An absolute nightmare but I appreciate you sharing all of this so we all know what it's about and how to handle it if it comes up. I worked as a kennel helper at a vet as a teen and I still CLEARLY recall assisting the vet with cleaning maggots out of a cat's wounds. 30 years later, the horror of it is still ingrained in my brain. I earned a whopping $4.25 an hour at that job!

I would think that chickens would attack the maggots if they saw them. That would indicate to me that they most definitely need to be separated from the flock. I use Zane oregano oil for infections and to boost immune system . 2 drops per gallon in the water. I also use thyme and oregano both in fresh herb and oil. I just had this happen. I found one of my chickens today with it. You are right. It happens quickly. Unfortunately I found it too late. I remember you did a video on it, and watched it. Hopefully I will be ready for next time. Thank you❤
I use on my hens what I call butt wash its just warm water and a bit of dawn detergent in a bottle that I put holes in the lid and squirt their butts every night to clean any poop off. I add dry orgeno in my birds food to try to avoid problems . I have a injured duck right now separted a few days as she heals
Thank you for sharing the information about Mr. Robot. Knowledge is power and thanks to you, your coopsitter, and Mr. Robot we are grateful and more powerful now. Thank you Madam President. 🥰 PS I almost cried. :(
I lost my Blanche today (my Rhode Island Red). Not sure what happened...went out and she was lying on her side, extremely weak. Picked her up and carried her inside and she died in my arms before I got to the living room. She had laid an egg today and was fine this morning and had no signs of any injury..etc. Just stumped as to what happened to her. She was only 16 months old. I am so sad about her passing.

Oh my what a stressful thing to go through. I'm so glad he made it! I have one chicken Lil Fluff who has poopy butt. I've been giving her yogurt with monostat mixed and it seems to be helping. Now I'm going to be more diligent about this! I had no idea about fly strike. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate all you do
Oh I am so very sorry!! We just went through one about 3 mos back with our chicken!! We saved her though thank goodness!!! She's actually laying eggs again! LOOK FOR BLOOD DROPS!! Mud there but too...flies won't go there, at least so I've seen😉also I noticed they don't like Epsom salt....oh I wish we could sit and talk face to face🥰
I didn’t even know about this one. Thank you. It’s been an extremely wet and humid summer where I live. I will keep a closer eye on them and be a little quicker at giving them baths when they have poop on their fluff.
Poor mr robot ! 🤖 I was actually thinking about him this morning, long before I saw the video. I went to buy a single silkie chick to keep another small chick company in my brooder. And the lady I bought it from had ducks that looked a lot like mr robot and it made me think of him. ❤️
Thank you so much. Your advice always comes at the right time. I was just looking at my 1 hen who has a poopy butt. Going out to check as soon as this video is done.

I’m glad he is doing well ❤.
yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phew, so glad Mr R made it! I've never heard of fly strike. Thanks for this awareness video.
Fly Predators are awesome, when we lived in Florida we had horse, chicken and 5 big dogs.
The predators were our saving grace!
Great story even better ending awesome! You do love MR. Robot you can’t go wrong with love.. ❤
I didn’t even know about this one. Thank you. It’s been an extremely wet and humid summer where I live. I will keep a closer eye on them and be a little quicker at giving them baths when they have poop on their fluff.
Poor mr robot ! 🤖
I was actually thinking about him this morning, long before I saw the video.
I went to buy a single silkie chick to keep another small chick company in my brooder. And the lady I bought it from had ducks that looked a lot like mr robot and it made me think of him.
