Have you started thinking about winter too? Or are you in denial haha??
We are in Northern North Dakota 1/2 mile from the Canadian border, so we have like 3-5 nice months a year, haha. We don't say the W* word or S* word from May-September haha. So sadly we think about it way to much
What do you think of DE as an internal parasite control/proticol. Some chicken owners swear by it but others say its not enough. I add some to my feed but I worry it won't be enough. What's your experience?
I just love your channel you're always spot on and I learn so much. this video was so helpful because I was waiting for the weather to cool down so I could start doing a clean up for my chickens. we have to keep our girls and boys happy and healthy
Please wear a good dust mask when cleaning out your coop...
in in the greater Sacramento county. it doesn't get cold enough to mater.
I’m a 15 year old homeschooled kid , I’m new to chickens and to You tube, thanks for sharing your vast amount of knowledge. You have given me lots of tips for raising my chickens!
Thank you so much for being a part of Chickenlandia!
This might be the most important you tube channel you watch! 😁 My son is 17 he is home schooled also. We used the chickenlandia course for his poultry science class and the school we used reimbursed us for it.
I give my chickens a little boost every few months. I mix honey, garlic, apple cider vinegar, ginger, turmeric mixed with water and add to their feed. Also pumpkin seeds. This helps keep them healthy and parasite free. I actually did my deep clean yesterday and also extended their run as we’ve started to get a fox visiting on a regular basis so now I can’t let them free range like I used to unless I’m in the garden with them. We don’t get many predators here in Belgium, but foxes are the worst!
Wait a minute, oregano, tyme, garlic....sounds like you are pre-seasoning your chickens in one way or another. LOL
Here’s a suggestion:::
I go to my local Natural grocers and get their trimmings that they would normally throw away after they straighten and add new produce.
My girls get greens year round…
FREE
Excellent!!!!
I do sprouted grains - a home made blend of between 6 to 14 different kinds - that I let grow for about 8 days. At that stage the sprouts are about 4 -5 inches tall. The first thing my chickens would do when I let them out of the coop in the morning is run out and gobble up all the grass they could get their little beaks on. So with the sprouted grains they have much more variety, it keeps them from eating every blade of grass in the run, and the nutrition is more bioavailable (from what I've read). They love it! I only have 6 chickens - 1 light brahma, 2 black australorps, 2 easter eggers, and 1 prairie blue bell egger. About 5 oz of the grain blend yields about 2lbs of sprouts, which is equal to 2% of my flocks full grown weight (they are only 11 weeks right now, so it's a little more than I actually need). They eat a good bit of it. Since not all the seeds germinate in those few days, they get some grains as well. I'm hoping some of the ungerminated seeds will eventually sprout and grow in the run. Of course, as eager as my girls are for fresh greens, I don't hold out a ton of hope!
With respect to herbal solutions, I had completely forgotten about oregano. I used it every day for myself! Parsley is good too. Oh! And apple cider vinegar. I need to be giving these to my chickens!
*Dragonflies with smooth jazz playing* 🎶 "Baby, nature is our hotel"
This is my first year with chickens. I got the chicks in March. I can say when I got out to gather eggs and and check on them I dread it only because I’m afraid I will find a sick chicken and not know how to help them properly. I’m terrified of the Winter and having them. We live in VT where the winters can be rough. I just want them to be safe and happy and I see so many chicken owners on FB, Instagram, RUclips going through so crazy things with their chickens and it makes me second guess if it was a good idea to get them. But I also can’t imagine not having them now. They are so cute and funny.
I think I just need the confidence to know I can handle something if it happens I suppose!
You got this!!! Remember so many humans before you have kept chickens. We’ve been doing this thousands of years! It’s in your DNA. ❤❤❤
I know what you're saying. This is our first Alaskan winter with chickens. I'm nervous because I love them so much more than I ever anticipated! This weekend, the coop gets insulation and a heater.... I'm worried about water. I bought every heated water dish available lol... surely one of them will work.
Stefbencole..I'm only in Tn. But my chickens spent all last year out side snow rain west wind blowing. They lived through all that then the rooster went next door. That left my girls at the mercy of preds.Plus they hatch eggs .so hot body an keep each other warm.well I can say don't worry .I still did worry.Thats what mars do.
@@Michigan_Girl I have an empty shed. With nest boxes. They would not go there.I have a 8ft chain link they felt safer there.Im backed up to woods.my neighbor has lots of livestock.i guess it attracts predators .I live alone but I finally built a new cage.they come and go an get tucked in at nite.
@@Michigan_Girl chickens are very durable in general! I live in the Pacific Northwest and I am not going to keep them cooped inside all winter! They have a warm house at night, and plenty of places to get out of the rain. They get grain daily to help with energy.
Yep. Dreading the michigan winter. Fall creeps in and I begin to panic prep for winter lol
Winter time. Feed your chickens more corn. It will fatten them up, and it will give them calories to survive the cold. If you make your own mix double your corn for winter.
And by the way you should not wait an entire year to clean you coop. Once a month. Same as egg laying box. That in itself will be better than half of the parasite battle.
It will be my first New England winter with chickens and I won't lie- I'm dreading it. I put off having chickens until now as I am not excited about caring for my flock in winter. But I know it's coming and I have been studying up so I can do what's best for my feathered friends! I'm up for the challenge (I hope). One part of preparing- I've been drying nutritious weeds and wild greens all summer to add to their winter food.
Sounds like a great plan! You and your chickens will get through it. Whenever you start to worry just think about all the other chickens that have made it through even harsher winters. You got this!
Me too! Im in MA. Chicks are just 20 weeks-ish. Good luck! I've been drying Lavender leaves from my garden. Makes the nest boxes smell nice.
Awesome video we may end up cleaning either tomorrow or next weekend. The dust bath may be best inside the coop during the winter months versus outside.
Our first winter with our girls! Thank you so much for sharing…lol.
🥰✈️👍🏾💕💕💕👍🏾✈️💕🥰 great tips
Thank you for the information. Unfortunately we do not have a single vet willing to work with chickens here where I live. (west coast us) I find that ridiculous. There are farm vets here, and they wont either. In June I had a major baby chick emergency. I called frantically to find help...finding none. I saved her little life myself. Hindsight.. keeping a Chicken First aid kit is ideal. I do realize there are some things a first aid kit wont help. But its a start. next week dry weather is coming so the cleanup will begin. Happy Fall Tidings!
I’m so sorry about the vet thing. I’m surprised the farm vets won’t help? They won’t even do a fecal? Sometimes exotic bird vets will help.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia The local vets wouldn't help at all, no fecals, We do not have an exotic pet vet willing to deal with chickens. I was just as shocked. However, saving her life myself was much better than a costly vet bill. I live in Southern Oregon, it is not as chicken friendly as you might think. Thank you for creating such a lovely channel.
We just got thru a flystrike😲SHES DOING AMAZING😁thankfully because I DIDN'T want her to have to go through the cold, if she was to make it. I am so proud of her!!!
Wow!! So happy for her!
I’m in Washington, I understand lol
my chickens love organic cabbage and organic chedder.
Scary times for first time chicken owner! But your videos gives me and I'm sure many others hope and knowledge to prepare. Winter is coming if we are ready for it or not!
👍🍀🇺🇸
I’m in SC and we rarely get any snow. Maybe a dusting every 2-3 years. We have had some serious (for us) snow but it’s mostly serious because we aren’t used to it, no snow tires or chains and very few salt trucks or anything to deal with more than a few inches. When we do manage to get snow, our kiddos have to roll up the entire yard to make one dirty pitiful snowman. 😆
I thought the purpose of deep litter is to keep it going through the fall and winter as that's when all that good poop is decomposing, composting and keep the coop warm. ?
Yes, that’s definitely part of the reason people do deep litter. But it does need to be cleaned out at least once a year so if someone hasn’t done their yearly clean out by fall, they should do it now and start the process over for the winter months. :)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia oh ok. I started my coop in June. Has no smell at all, and it makes sense for me to keep it until after winter, so that it's nice and deep and warm for the hens. I was planning on cleaning it out in the spring. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.
is it ok to mix in the shells and grit into their food? I use a 5 gallon bucket that I put their feed in and I have been mixing handfuls of Grit and Shells into it as well as food grade Diatomaceous Earth.
thanks for the tips
🥰As always, I love your tips & tricks 😉.
Keep up the good work, and I'll be keeping my small backyard flock (22 hens, 2 roosters) happy and healthy for the years to come❣💖

I am just seeing this and we have Zero Snow here in Southwest Georgia!! Cold is bad for me!!
DE in feed for parasites? ... Need more of that 80's sounding music - with chicken montage! 😎👍🐔
I have seen one positive study regarding DE in food to prevent parasites but that’s it. I’m not completely convinced, but I’m also fairly certain it has some effect, even if it’s just due to the high mineral content which helps with overall health.
Gotta love that synth pop! I use it whenever I can because I just love the 80s lol!
I've saw another video saying it was all you really need, but I'm not really convinced either. Thank you for the insight.
Yes, 80's were the best! 🎷
I love your chicken run and house, when you put the shavings down if you mix in just a little garden lime, not too much or else it burns their legs, just a small sprinkle it will help disinfect the house and keep mites down, also then the shavings are even better for the garden
I plan on doing a very good cleaning here within the next couple of weeks or so. Thankfully my nesting boxes are turf so all I have to do is rinse them and dry them and that’s it. Last year I did straw bales all around the run but this year I may just wrap in tarps because it’s easier. We have dust bath set up but they rarely use it so I’m thinking of doing a base of dust in the whole run next year. I don’t think I’m going to do deep liter this winter.
I fixed my 3 girls a nice dust bath and they ignore it lol
Oh those silly chickens! Maybe in the winter they will use it. ❤
I did not see the 2 links for the prevention of parasites in the Description Section. Can you provide those links, including Molly's links? Thanks
I’m so sorry, I forgot to add them! They are all in the description now. ❤
@@WelcometoChickenlandia Thank you. :)
Well now that the video has just started and you're talking about deep cleaning, yay I got that right! I guess I should just watch the video
Coming to you from Minnesota---we get a lot of snow and cold in the winter---we do all the things you say in this video--we PRE-PARE we do it all....before the snow flies--because it SUCKS! to do it in the severe cold--it's hard! We amp up their feed, the grit...we do all that...but this video is very, very good for those out there that think it's okay to just keep them in the coop! Thank you for all you do for us chicken-lovers, and the chickens out there! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Don’t think it’s just you! I’m from Northern Ohio. Hated the long winters, so I’m in NV now!! 😄
I don’t blame you for moving hahaha
I’m in northwest Ohio!!! Smart move for you😂
Love your channel, so much great information ❤
Good point!
Thanks so much 🙏 Very helpful
Great tips here, thanks!
I wish, here near Austin it’s still 98 all week.
💕🥰love you bunches! Thank you for sharing your know-how ❤️
Here in Indiana. Hate winter
HEY! I have that shirt! 💖
**We're in Alaska.... winter starts before Halloween and ends about Easter time. 2 weeks of snow is what we get in May before the sun starts shining again lol
I'm thinking about dehydrating some greens I have growing in my yard and adding the powder to their feed in the winter
NEED to start early this year! Last year, I started the NIGHT BEFORE our first snow. DUH JOSH!! LOL
Been there as well 😂
Nice work
Oh yes the list! I got my coop run wrapped with the tarp last week. Did a really good spruce up on the inside. Extra scrubbing. Although I forgot to do the perch bars I'll have to go out and do that. Making sure everything is tight! It is on its way as it is raining today.
Very well done!
They still need air flow to avoid excess humidity
I love your content! I can't wait to get my flock going
❤❤❤
Thank you ❤ when I maid some fermented grains for my chickens I put some herds in it like thyme, turmeric ❤❤❤
Thanks for this video. I'm new to chickens and I appreciate the info here. :)
Lol, even the insects love your set up ;) Thank you for taking time out of your life to share with us 💞
Perhaps they love it a little too much! 😂🫣❤️
Thanks 🙏🏻 again for great info President of Chickenlandia!!! I feel like we're good chicken friends!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
I bring my girls sprouts each day in the winter and they have a cabbage hanger to peck at ( they love cauliflower in it too!). I also put various tires piled up, an old water fountain and a few big branches in the pen. They seem to have fun with it all..
Sounds great!
Even if it is real cold out you can throw an entire head of cabbage to your Birds it will not go to waste. The love cantaloupe. Cut one in half and give it to them seeds and all.
I do deep clean every 3 months because of dust
Hi this is great advice, as usual. We are lucky enough to have access to cheap salad and vegetables even during the winter months. We aren't lucky enough to have grass in my garden so I have them on hardwood chips then throw sunflower seeds and grated carrot, swede etc. They love it.
We are about to do a different lay out in the coop to make it easier to clean. More perches etc. I will be scouring you shed for ideas. Take care.
I have a four tier sprouting station, which works great for skin or feather people. Lol
NICE
Thinking about this too. We are in eastern canada. We have 3 months and piles of snow!
Thank you I am cleaning out the coop tomorrow and garlic eggs too. I love your channel and always learn or reminded of good info. Sweet Home fan!
What is "garlic eggs*?
I have a fishing stringer that I use to hang a head of cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower on once in a while for my chickens. I also give them any really outdated fruits. vegetables, pasta with or without meat & fish cans of food. They also get all all They love it & I don't have to throw out anything.
I use colloidal silver
Getting ready for winter - first frost in less then 60 days. Trying to see if you've done a video on solar lightning for the coop during the winter?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the coupon code. I placed my first order with Small Pet Select.
Yay!!!
Lol on dragon flys! 😂
I sprout lentils for my chickies in thewinter herein Maine.
I wish I had seen this 3 months ago! We moved back to Maine in spring of last year and got chickens for the first time. Love your channel! Now I'm off to find dust for a dust bath, checking out Molly's herbals and ordering some of those packets from small pet select! What's the best thing to get for a dust bath this time of year? The ground is frozen, so they can't do their dust bathing in their yard and it wouldn't have occurred to me to make a winter one for them in the coop! Thanks again!
Procest and easy
I just bought this new lime, it's called first Saturday, I have heard alot of good things about it, this doesn't burn your chickens feet, it does kill mites ,today I was throwing it everywheres in the coop 😂 going a little crazy , I'm a first time chicken owner, I had my chick's delivered in July, I would love to give them Oster shell's but they say it's to early , I'm wondering has anyone given Oster shell's before 18 weeks .
Where did you get those thick black plastic containers where you put water in them they will be great for my ducks
I’ve grown a lot of herbs this summer for them.
Can I use powdered egg shells for their calcium?
I would use them crushed instead. It will be easier for them to eat and it should be in a separate bowl from their feed. :)
Any Alaskans wanting to order from Small Pet Select... call them. They will ship to Alaska, but you have to pay and it has to fit in a priority box.... hey, we're pretty much used to that. 😁
What do you think about adding aloe to the water for Cokecityosis?
I thought about pickling greens over the winter months. I been buying those one gallon pickle jars you find at the grocery store and using the jars for fermenting things.
It's so easy to pickle veggies! For you or for your chickens? I wonder about the salt content if it's for chickens...
@@WelcometoChickenlandia
I was thinking at first for me but after thinking about what the hens need over the winter, there going to need more greens then me.
I can wash the greens off before giving it to them.
You can ferment chicken feed in water without salt, and the many online articles I read about it list lots of benefits to it. So, I’ve been experimenting with it for a few months, and my girls seem to enjoy it and are pretty solidly healthy so far. I add garlic powder, ground egg shell, herbs, and occasional fruits and veggies, right before serving. I serve it to them in a chicken soup bowl because our whole household thinks it’s funny. 😁
@@lakers361
That is funny. I thought about using large stock pots for nesting boxes. So it will look like they are cooking in a pot while laying an egg. 😂
@@libertykim6438 😂 I love that idea! You should totally do it! If not for the nesting box, then maybe for the dust bath. Too funny! I so badly wanted to build a circular chicken coop and paint a Campbell’s Chicken Soup label on the outside, but, alas, my woodworking skills are no where near that complex. Maybe some day I’ll luck out and get my hands on a cheap, used little silo. That might do the trick. 😉
I would love to know what your feeding your chickens~ also have a used vitamin C for your flock? I’m reading great things from it.
What specific herbs from Molly’s do you give your chickens?
What did you treat your chickens with for coccidiosos?
I don’t give my hens oyster shell, or grit. I’ll do that.
I'm in suburbia FAR from any woods, and things keep killing all my chickens. All of them. 20 so far, and they're ALWAYS enclosed in coops and pens. I've had raccoons use their furry hands and let themselves right in, rip them apart. I do not understand wtf is happening, I'm keeping mine inside this winter until I can fix this issue.
I'm getting some Chrysanthemums Just for the Chickens... ir's Anti-parasitic and they Love them.
Would you recommend mixing calcium into the feed?
I did soil, sand and DE in the dust bath. I did everything I was supposed to do and had a hen die from northern fowl mites. Never had that problem in TN. Do you have that problem there?
Ugh I’m so sorry. We do have those up here but they aren’t as common as lice. The dust baths help to control infestations but they are not a guarantee. If she died it’s very likely she actually had an underlying issue going on. I’m so sorry!
I have 2 turkeys. My male turkey kicks all the grit and oyster shell out of my hanging cups as soon as I fill them. Any ideas friends? He may be Thanksgiving.
Did I miss the description of her bird shower ingredients? She said Link in the description but I do not see it explicitly.
Because I forgot to put the link! 😮 I’m putting it there now. Sorry about that!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia No worries! Thank you
do you have a video on tips for integrating flocks? I went crazy getting different breeds over this summer. I have 10 Delaware I got in March, 3 barred rock I got in May and 4 lavender Orpington I got in July. in the summer I housed them separately, but only one coop is ok for the rainy season but the barred rocks are kinda aggressive. the Delaware can stand up for themselves, but the orps are still pretty young. ideas? suggestions?
ps. I love your channel and think you are absolutely wonderful. I also agree that winter is not our best season. I also have no idea how anyone lives with snow. can you imagine shoveling a car out before work?!!? or driving on ice?!!? yea, no!
I took a dog cage n put the new chickens in there for a few days till my flock accepted them. Just watched the interaction for a bit after that but all seemed well🤷♀️ I do that for all ages
Snow is awful. Die, winter! Die!! Lol 🤣🥶❤️

They are Juniper! But they were stupid expensive haha (I didn’t realize how much they were until I was at the checkout lol). They were grafted onto the trunks so they don’t actually grow like that naturally.

i need advice. the vet quoted $45. to see her. i cant see that its a chicken. i got a group (5) of chickens added to my flock and seemed to go well but today i saw one curdled up in the corner of the yard. when i got it i found it was pecked so badly that there is a maybe 1 by 2 inch opening on the head.i mean i can see the bone of the skull (nasty). i sprayed w antiseptic but i cant even stitch it back its to large. idk w to do and i dont want it to suffer. is it better to make some soup or can it recover? i got her in a cage right now so no more damage from the bullies.
What medication did the vet give you for the sick chickens?
Hi!! I hope you’ve been well! Do you have a link for the little enclosure in front of the chicken door?

I give them the herbal formula that I talk about in the video. :)
Do ducks dust bathe?
No they just use the water. :)
I've got a question I've got three chickens and they are all very picky I've tried giving them herbs before but they do like scrambled eggs so if I put the oregano and time in it how often do you think I should get them this next
do you wear a mask with deep cleaning, esp high surfaces?
Video idea... chicken first aid kit.
I have three hens and I had to go away for work trip to San Diego my brother watched them they were fine everything was fine when I came back and this was in the middle of September when I came back I haven’t got the most consistent eggs from one of my chickens and now I haven’t had an egg from her I think in about nine days there doesn’t seem to be any issue my other hens are laying fine I’ve looked her over she’s eating acting normal I’ve heard in Florida that chickens don’t slow down or stop laying eggs because of the shorter days but could that be what’s causing it? Do different breeds actually have more effect from the shorter days over other breeds? I will add that she is my most inconsistent layer to begin with I usually get less production from her than the other hens.
HI sweet kindred chicken lady....I see you use netting across the top of your coop. What kind of netting is this please? Do wild birds get caught in the netting? This is my worst fear from closing in our coop. Blessings...
I can’t find the netting I have but I found another brand that seems pretty much the same. There’s a link to it in the description! I haven’t had any birds get caught in this type of netting, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen. I’m afraid of that as well! Mine is 1” and pulled very taught, which helps a ton. :)
Can you feed them microgreens?

Some hens are having bad backs. I thot maybe roosters were over mating.took out all but one roo. Do u think the hens have mites
