Most cities won't allow the raising of live stock including chicken's. I'm not sure why since we live in a rural area. Yes it's wonderful raising chickens as we have a decent flock . I think there's plenty of people doing this that would eliminate egg factories.
I just rescued 2 battery hens 4 weeks ago, the transformation was incredible, within 48 hours we had the 2 hens coming to us to be held, that tells you that love conquers all species❤

Sprouts are wonderful in winter. Now it’s summer I carry a basket and when I weed or thin veg in the garden all that goes in the chick run, also plant something in the yard, toss the sod to the chickens they scratch it all to bits and love it.
They dont currently allow chickens where I live but I still have them (4) I fortunately live on a dead end so no neighbors behind me or on one side and my neighbors dont mind them and the kids like to come over to see them. I absolutely adore my girls and they bring so much joy to my life. The eggs are just a bonus. I encourage anyone that is thinking about raising chickens to do it.
I live in an urban area that doesn't permit any livestock, and yes the local definition of livestock includes fowl. Fortunately my neighbors enjoy having their young children interact with my flock. (It brings back the mother's memories of her grandmothers' flock.) Indeed, many of my neighbors are fine with being bribed with eggs! A story you'll appreciate. I was explaining to an intellectual high schooler all the conditions I'd have to comply with in order to follow my city's laws. 1. Have an acre or more of land. (I'm fortunate to have a 3/4 acre lot.) 2. All livestock enclosures must be X feet from any boundary of my property. 3. Pay a fee per animal. This clever, intellectual high schooler summed it up succinctly, "So basically, you have to be wealthy to own chickens." So sad, but what was once a food resource for low income families is now a luxury. Many of us fly under the radar knowing if someone reports us we'd have to give up our flocks. An aquaintance's property adjoins a church's daycare/afterschool program's playground. One of the workers saw a snake in the playground, wrongly believes chickens attract snakes, reported it to her employer who took the family to court. The judge, whose wife has a flock said the law couldn't be clearer or more ridiculous, and so his hands were tied. And yes my urban backyard has a snake I see almost daily. I've seen a baby possum (got into the run during the day!) likely attracted by our compost pile. And I feed wild birds black oiled sunflower seeds, which attracts rodents as well as wild birds. Our backyard had all this wildlife (snakes, possums, rats/mice, worms, ants, butterflies, raccoons, hummingbirds, wasps/bees, cockroaches, ferrel cats, hawks, bats, wild dogs, anoles) long before we had a flock of chickens. Humans don't "own" this world more than other animals do; they share this world with us. Indeed, it is we who must learn to share it with them.

So Funny story my 6 year old was helping me feed the chickens this morning and out of nowhere turns around in our small chicken run with his arms up and says welcome to CHICKENLANDIA 😂😂😂 😂😂😂😂 yepp with a funny accent tooo 😅 I Just love him !
We don’t have much kitchen waste for our chickens so I sprout wheat berries and a greens mix. The parsley lasted all winter in the greenhouse so they get parsley and field grass to peck through, too. They love it to have roots/dirt. There’s always jars on the counter and windowsill. Have you ever thought about what it’s like when they eat the worms? Crazy girl got a huge one the other day and after a few pecks, downed it whole!
I live in SC and have a game hen that wandered into our yard a few years ago and roosts in the tree outside my window. She shared the fenced yard with our 2 dogs. A few weeks ago, I sprayed the yard with a product called Celcius WG to kill the lawn burweed. This weed produces a crown of thorns that persists for months, stabbing our dogs' pads. I researched the product and read the entire package insert before using it. It said it was safe for animals after it dried. However, when I called the company, they said no grazing animals can go on a sprayed area for 1 year! Luckily, I was able to capture her and put her in a chicken tractor in an unsprayed area when she was sitting in her nest box. Something to consider for those who have free range chickens in a yard used by barefoot humans and dogs...
Please show how you take care of you Salad Bar. How do you plant it? How often do you water it? How do you keep it growing? We have 4 chickens in a small back yard. Thank you!!
I just sprinkled a bunch of seeds (like lettuces, kale, chard, greens, clover, even dandelion and grass seeds, etc) and watered in with the hose and water again when it looks dry. I also placed their drinking water container on the screen, so if it spills, it waters the seeds. It's starting to grow already!!
Thank you for this video. I am a new Chicken mom (my girls are 6wo) and I am super worried that they are bored. I live in the suburbs and even though I have a big backyard, I also have all predators there, so they stay in the coop+medium run. Today I hang a little apple before I left for work but I am also looking for things to keep them happy and entertained. Thank you for your videos Madam President hehe!
Paola - I am brand new to chickens (1 month) but I have seen in people's comments that they put small tree branches (or poles) attached to the inside of the run sides for them to sit on at different heights, a bale of straw for them to sit on, small balls for them to chase, a chicken swing, little metal cases attached to the sides or hanging from the run roof that hold veges for them to pick at, etc. I saw a picture of a run that was basically made as a chicken play ground. Someone planted a couple of bushes for them to rest under, etc. Get creative. I am thinking of things to put in my chicks run as soon as they are big enough to go outside. Hope this helps from a "just out of the egg" new chicken owner!!!!!! Good luck to you. (All 8 of my chicks are still alive & well at 3 & 4 weeks old now!!. I am so proud!)
I grew up on the property i am currently living on. My parents had well over 50 chickens and roos. There were no limits then. Now there is a limit with no roos allowed (tbh no one in town listens to the no roo policy). Pre covid i would have only been allowed 12 hens. Something happened during lickdowns and now the town this year has uped the amount you can have. I can now have 24 and i will definitely be maximizing the amount im allowed. I plan on working with the town to make sure that the people in town in low income situations can have fresh eggs.
I love, love, love my lil chicks, chickens. Free eggs. They free range right now but gotta build a coop to keep the poop in a contained area. It will be 50% of my yard though. Thank you for all your videos ❤❤❤🐓🐓🐓🐣
The best results we had with chickens was when we had horses. The chickens took care of the fly problem and the horses dropped feed from their buckets for the chickens.

How do you water in your coop and the salad bars? I was just thinking the grass might get too wet or muddy or something. Do you move the flock from place to place as the grass gets eaten?
