    I'm so glad to hear this! This is my first year with chickens and I have been using First Saturday Lime since we started. I have yet to have any issues with any kind of parasite in my coop. In fact, I just changed out the bedding I have in my coop for the winter and found no evidence of any type of bugs. I use the deep litter method and have never once had a stinky coop. It keeps everything dry, so moisture shouldn't be a problem in the winter, with good ventilation of course! Thanks for sharing.

      Sorry, DE DOES NOT WORK! You just got lucky. And ACV DOES NOT WORK!. None of the backyard chicken VOODOO works. Ive tried it all and it DOES NOT WORK. Only stuff that works is chemicals and medicines. Try getting rid of cattle mange with DE or chickens worms with DE or chicken flu with DE. Just rubbish!
      The mites come from mice or wild birds. Then the repeats come from eggs and non-killed mites. You almost have to burn down the coop to get rid of them. There are sprays that work like horse fly spray and

    We have the kind of Diatomaceous Earth that you can eat yourself, so no problems if you use DE for your chickens. If you put it in their bath, it will make a huge difference.
    I use a tarpaulin on the floor of my henhouse. Then I just have to drag it out and clean it. And ofcourse the corners of the floors. It's so easy and it makes cleaning so fast.
    In the nests I use a lot of herbs and wild rosemary.

    I bought it twice once was with a nearly free coupon n the other was full price with a tinny coupon . I liked it .. but 😮 I don’t have connections and shallow pockets filled with sand ... so I figure out how they got their from where I sit
    Just like when you want powdery DE you buy the slivers kind and use your blender .. or want to get fine salt to mix with Baking soda n borax to rid sand fleas or fleas. Or need pool supplies n all you got is household stuff
    Dolomite lime is also called barn lime and gardening lime . Barn lime is exponentially cheaper than First Saturday Lime and it's the same active ingredient! If you like it powdery then crushed take your Spare blender outside n make a bunch. You can usually get a much better deal on barn lime from a local home improvement store since bags are heavy to ship

    For anyone who is interested: sulfur powder (90% pure or higher) is saving my chickens from a terrible mite infestation. I have never seen mites before, so it was already out of hand before I realized what was going on. I am hand-dusting each one every couple of days and the problem is almost gone. I am also using HOCL 500 ppm spray. HOCL is very beneficial, it is harmless and painless to both us and to chickens.

I also use deep litter method with hemp and fsl, I've had no problems with ammonia, bugs or odor. I use it in the dust bath and sprinkle it on the floor of the run also. Yes, keep an eye on the crevices. Recently had this with mites where I didn't notice because they were in a crevice between perch and ladder. Even though things were clean it didn't matter because they were tucked in that crevice. Horrific battle trying to contain them when I disturbed them. Elector did not work fast enough so I tried bleach and they kept moving. I panicked and just used tools and soaked rags to smash them. Then i set all the stuff I used on fire.

    Random advise to try... When spreading that LIME stuff or DE on your ground once a month or whatever try using a lawn seeder/spreader ya know thise push things that you pour lawn seed or fertilizer into and the shaft thing rotates allowing the material to drop and disperse evenly. Just an idea i had while watching. Gonna try it myself. Btw is that actual Lyme? I would assume no since it would probably burn their eyes etc if used as directed in the dust bath.

    Maybe it is time to have real chickens with all of their feathers, have washable bedding and clean all of the perches with 91 percent rubbing alcohol. I will admit I finally got bit by the silkie bug and now have two silkies. But I still believe silkies are a means to get satins and not to create showgirls. I don't see why we should be encouraging the propagation of weak and vulnerable versions of our birds instead of better birds every generation. Satins are so much better than a showgirl. I only bought silkies because I couldn't find satins ANYWHERE. So now I will be using two extremely healthy well bred shockingly intelligent silkies to make polski chickens that will lay fewer eggs and have real feathers and have a decent temperment

    • @jennifertheobald9823
      @jennifertheobald9823 11 месяцев назад

      I recently got silkies (6 of them) and a little satin was thrown in the mix. I had zero knowledge of what a satin even was. I got them all just to have not to breed or do anything special with. I just thought silkies were cute as can be. Anyhow - the little satin one is so stinking pretty and sweet. My favorite by far. I would love to have more just like her. Well hopefully she's a she LOL

    • @songoftheblackunicorn666
      @songoftheblackunicorn666 11 месяцев назад

      @@jennifertheobald9823 a satin is a Cochin silkie cross. Having real feathers is as nature intended is a dominant trait. However it takes some selective breeding to get just the real feathers and leave everything else unchanged to get the satin like you have. When I cross my silkies with my polish I will have crested birds in the first generation because f1 polskis will breed true with regards to crest when bred with other fully crested birds. However the feathered feet the beards and the extra toe will be a bit of a mess for two generations at least because most of these traits are semi dominant autozomal traits that show partially with one copy of the gene and fully with two.

Besides spreading in the inside of my coops, I spread some around the outside. It definitely also helps with the ammonia smell. If I just want to freshen the coop / pens a bit, I just sprinkle some on and throw some straw or shavings over it. Have had no problems with any mites or parasites. 🙏🏼😊
