Identifying and treating Lice and Mites in Poultry
In this video I show you how I identify and manage parasites in my flock. Keep in mind I am not a Vet so please always do your own research so that you may make the most informed decisions you can for the care of your animals.

Thank you for showing what a mite case actually looks like! It is critical to diagnose what your bird has first before treating her.
So sweet 😭 I hate how so many people mistreat chickens and act as though they’re disposable. They’re such sweet and innocent creatures and they deserve so much love
Sg
I know some roosters that ain’t so innocent, they’ve been very bad boys.
Great video mate, very informative and having the images to look at is a big help. Thank a bunch.
Love this!!!!😊
Natural remedy, One application.. Elector PSP and Saturday Lime. Both pricey but I just ordered them today. Reviews on both products are amazing..
Hi Sis!! Found you on Small Homesteaders!!
We are a Music Duo and Farmers/Hybrid-Homesteaders. You have a new supporter here!! God Bless you on your Journey!! We have chicken and guinea friends on our Farm. ❤️
That's so awesome thank you! My husband is actually a musician 😄 I would love to have guinea hens someday but they are SO loud! Do they cause a ruckus for you?
“The Nameless Homestead” is such a clever name!
Ok I’m not even very far in and I’m already SUPER thankful for this video!!
I’m a parasitologist so am loving this topic
Thank you. Great advice andinformation and seeing photos did help
We just dusted 24 chickens tonight
Going to get the pour on and retreat in 10 days
Thank you
Be very careful, one of my hens pecked me in the eye. Required ER visit, antibiotics. She got me twice in an instant. One hole in eyelid, one in white area of my eye. We now wear saftey glasses anytime near chickens. Thanks for the lice info. Going to pick up some Ivomec tomorrow.
Thanks. Eye protection will be used.
Awesome video thank you for the great info. You are super adorable and so easy to watch. you get a gold star from sammy 🥰👍🏼
For pour on 1% it is 1 drop (eye dropper) per 1lb of bird then follow that on 7-10days later to catch those who have hatched in the interim
Treat on back of the neck
I really LOVE your style. I can tell that your animals are dear to you, and that you are confident in what you are doing. I used your formula on my girls (Clementine and Henne) for scaly leg mites after using Swarfega for a week. Everything is healing up just fine! Question I think Henne may have some mites of lice on her head. I dont want to give her too much Ivermectin. Should I wait to use the "behind the neck or under wing" formula until I finish with her scaly leg mites? Your are really a dear person and very appealing and cute in your very authentic presentation. Great Job
Enjoyed watching! Refreshing to see some good sense advice and not some magic potion to treat your critters. Keep up the good work, will look forward to seeing you you do on your farm next 😀👍 (I laughed so hard when you went outside and discovered the escapees! That could have been a scene from my farm, crazy goats!)
Heck yeah! And yes while all the hippie holistic concepts Are all well and good if we reject the holistic medicine concepts or we reject the western medicine concepts we risk missing out on all the good either has to offer. Like in most situations the truth or in this case the best practice is somewhere in the middle 😉
@@TheNamelessHomestead Agreed! 😀
Hey thanks for that. There is so much opinions on RUclips the more I watch the less I know what to do. But you have settled me, I will use Ivermectin 👍
Good presentation. Liked seeing the escape artists. lol. Been there, done that. Not sure what options I have in Canada for meds but everyone swears by ivermectin.
I've been using a mixture of water and dawn dish soap and neem oil - in a spray bottle - for poultry lice on my hen. The dawn dish soap kills the lice instantly and theoretically, the neem oil will break the life cycle of the lice (by starving them to death). I've also used DE a few times (and it does help). I change my hen's bedding every few days (using the same mixture of dawn dish soap and water with added neem oil) I spray her coop before adding new bedding.... I've just been spraying her vent area and under her wings and behind her head and on her chest (then I keep her indoors until she's dry) - I've done this 3 times so far, and so far so good... It's too cold to give her a bath, so I am seeing if this will hold her over until Spring - when it starts warming up. The dish soap is light on the soap and it doesn't appear to be irritating her skin (since I am not rinsing it).
My question is - Is there a withdrawal period (for the eggs) after using Ivermectin? She's a Spring Chicken and she's just starting to lay - really good eggs...
Sounds like you all have been through a lot! Ivermectin should really help you all that work sounds rough for little result. With the ivermectin, I personally am comfy with eating the eggs but that is based on my personal research and I advocate everyone do their own research and go off of what they are comfortable with. Others who do withdrawals will wait until 2 weeks after the final treatment.
LOL have to laugh at the goats and camelids, raised both for years, it's always fun.
Not much better than goats and alpacas! They are always good for laughs and are a constant source of cuteness 🥰
Can you speak a little bit about what you like to treat the coop with? I know changing bedding is important, and that these critters are known to hide in cracks. What should I use on the structures and nesting boxes?
Thank you so much for this video. My chickens have a terrible infestation of lice.. I didn't know it was even a thing to look out for.. I just went out and checked their necks cuz they have been losing feathers around there vent and their skin is so red. I looked at their necks and sure enough... lice.. I just ordered some ivermectin.. it can't get here fast enough
You can see mites with the naked eye when they aren’t full of blood they are clear yellowish bug! But bird mites are black speck looking you can still see them.
Injection Ivermectin fed orally @ 10mg/mL with dosage of 200μg/kg ,= 1 drop/2.5kg , 2drops/5kg. To medicate smaller animals accurately you'll need to mix 10% Ivermectin to 90% saline solution(saline does not need to be for injection unless you are injecting)then administer 1 drop/250 grams , 2 drops / 500 grams. Fed to mouth orally with eye dropper.
Is the oral meds advice for intestinal parasite?
@@dianeespinoza8647 yes , it has the same results whether it's injected , consumed orally or diluted with isopropyl alcohol and administered as pour on.
Your chook there is so freaking adorable. Thanks for the video. I'll have to order some iver on Amazon cause we don't have a TS here in hawaii.
Cynthia, I have a couple of questions about using the Ivermectin cattle pour-on on chickens. If your chickens have a problem on their heads/neck AND the vent area, where do you apply the 2 drops? And I’m wondering if you have to dispose of the eggs after the treatment and if so for how long? Thank you for your video on this issue. It was an answer to my prayers because I have tried so many different remedies and nothing seems to help my poor hens. I’m ready to give the Ivermectin a try. I hope you can answer these questions for me. Thank you!
Great video and very timely upload in my case as I have just discovered what I believe to be lice on my chickens. First time encountering this so I really appreciate your advice.
I am so glad it's been helpful for you! A big bottle of ivermectin may be a bit pricey but it will last nearly forever and you can use it to treat for lice and mites on dang near any animal so it's a good investment ❤ I have used it on my goats, pigs, alpaca, and all classes of poultry.
Can you post the Amazon link for the medication you are recommending?
This doesn't sound right, in my case! My chickens got Northern mites once before at the beginning of Covid-19. This afternoon I realized they're back. It's like having fleas, poison ivy and lice all at once. It's a nightmare that takes a long time to fully get rid of! I read that they can send pheromones to each other. This is absolutely true. They choose a person and it became very apparent that I was infested with them. They bite you every place imaginable and nothing relieves it. Others in our fam who go in the run, get a few on them and get maybe one bite. They crawl on your phone, and have so a few times as I write this message. They're very difficult to kill. I take tape to get them off of me. They're so tiny it's difficult to get a clear picture of them w a cell-phone. Today I noticed my gorgeous Buff Orpington Roo was missing it's sickle feathers. They were there this AM, now they're GONE! I went to inspect and mites immediately began climbing on me. And a little bit of black was on one side of his comb. The hens don't show signs yet. I'm a Momma bear at this moment....
I had to use several methods to get rid of them last time. This includes alcohol. Bleach, Permethrin 10, Diatomaceous Earth, Flea Medication, and sulfer (which smells just lovely). And of course, I've had to move the chickens from the coop and run and empty everything.
And because they are on me, I have to put Diatomaceous Earth on me, flea meds, spray our house (just in case) wash sheets every day and spray flea meds all over my and put stuff on wood. They can hang out in wood for a long time without feasting on something. Anyway, I'm happy to try this as well. I even changed the kind of bedding to cedar bedding. I think I'm gonna have PTSD from this! ;) Thanks.
They can crawl on you just as any bug can when handled but you can't "catch" lice or mites from your birds. They are species-specific parasites so you can breathe easy that they can not live on you. They can be a nightmare to get rid of though once a strong infestation happens in a coop
@@TheNamelessHomestead yes, but there are certain mites that send pheromones to each other and trust me,, you (too) can be one of their chosen ones! They get on you, your bedding, but hang out in your furniture. They can go 7 months without living on the host.. Its the worst nightmare imaginable. There are different kinds of mites.
This article may help you. Can they bite us? Yes. Be transported on us? Yes. But they can not live without their needed diet of bird blood. The messaging here that I am trying to convey is that we don't need to fear them. Many people fear having chickens because they worry that poultry lice are the same as the headlice human can get or that they as humans can contract chicken mites as a personal infestation. I hope that helps to clarify
www.healthline.com/health/bird-mites#takeaway
@@TheNamelessHomestead certain bird mites can live for years on human skin using human blood, the mites prefer birds but human blood is enough to ensure survival, mites takes a few weeks of living continuously on the human skin to create burrows, they are very difficult to wash off using soap and water but can be repelled by essential oils like tea tree oil, rosemary, mint, etc. but if no birds are around, they will stick to human skin like superglue, I speak from years of suffering, so please beware. Once they form burrows then getting rid of them is harder than treating scabies.
I know some that the infestation was in the coop in the crevices of the wood and the joins of the coop. They just burnt the coop they were torturing their birds over treating them for mites.
When you bleached the wood did you squirt it inside the crevices ?
Great video! Thank you for sharing 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for actually showing how you do this, your great.
Glad to help! Thanks for stopping by 💖
the link doesn't seem to work. Thanks for the video. lol to the goats - crazy goats.
Great information
I am glad you enjoyed it ❤
Janice - It was useless trying to by Invermectin! One company recommended it for guinea pigs in the UK! we live in France don't know what to do now!
Peut-être que vous pouvez acheter sur l’internet directement des USA ou d’un autre pays European.
Les autres produits ivermectin pour les autres animaux feront l’affaire aussi. C’est à peu près les mêmes , la seule différence est le dosage à administrer.
Did you have to clean out the entire coop?
Hello, my question is, what do you do in the coop area for lice? I have lice in my coop now, and a few chickens have mites on there legs. I put Vaseline on there legs and it helps. But to clean the coop to rid lice is hard. Thanks
So can I use this and some diatomaceous earth????
Like your video. Lol with the “crew” crossing boundary lines. Super cute. So question is how did it do they get them and how to prevent again? Not sure if my moms flock has all over mites or just the leg (scaly ) mites. Also noticed that the two that I saw (roosters) also seem to have some eye problems. They will rub them and shake their head every once in a while and the eye itself seems a little off can’t put my finger on it maybe it’s the color? Or structure not sure. One more question... do you know if rabbits can get it if near by? And one more (sorry) can you still eat their eggs when you put those droplets on them ?Thank you for making this video
Mites and lice live natively in the environment and its often carried in by wild birds. there isn't a ton you can do to prevent them but you can help a bit by keeping feeders inaccessible to wild birds (google a treadle feeder and thank me later!), and general husbandry tasks like keeping their living spaces as clean as possible. handle your birds often and keep an eye out so that you can notice the first signs of them. these parasites are species specific so you dont need to worry about other animals getting them other than other species of birds like turkeys or ducks if you have them. as for the eggs that is one of those things everyone has to decide for themselves because the medication is technically "off label" there is no recommended withdrawals. it is generally accepted to wait until 2 weeks out from the last dosage of the medication. i personally dont use a withdrawal time because i feel comfortable with this medication and what i know about it but if i was selling eggs i would absolutely wait 2 weeks+. eye problems can be so tricky its very hard to say without seeing it first hand but i would hook up with some groups and reach out with photos/videos we have some accounts and groups of our own if you are interested in them they are listed in the description box of the video. i am no vet but i am happy to help if i can ❤
We have scaley leg mites.
Oh no! I hope you are able to get rid of them quickly I can imagine that's horribly uncomfortable for the poor birds. Best of luck!
@@TheNamelessHomestead yeah they're doing much better but they don't seem to be completely gone.
@@TheNamelessHomestead how would you treat them for scaley leg mites? Have you had them?
Fortunately I have never had to deal with those type of mites personally however if I ever did I would be putting a drop or 2 of ivermectin pour on as featured in my video on each leg and I would repeat every 7-10 days until fully resolved. Hope that helps ❤ also RUclips studio isn't wanting to alert me to replies for some reason so if I don't respond to questions in like 24hrs please feel free to message me on Facebook or Instagram to get my attention!
Could you use the same treatment on 5 week old chicks?
I love you video❤️ will ivermectin work for scaly face mite? I have that I think
To the best of my knowledge, that is the same as scaly leg mites and that is often treated with this medication as well. If my chickens had either I would personally feel safe treating them with this.
The Nameless Homestead thank you for your reply. You have no idea how alone I am in keeping chickens. I have no one to ask questions of. I REALLY appreciate your willingness to use medicine. I see that there are a ton of natural cure Nazis on here. Please! Natural cures are great but I ant tryin to fool around. Lice is gross.
Can chicks be treated with this treatment?
My chickens have bald spots all over there body is there any way can post a photo of them need help.
By mistake we gave our hand Luna her second dose of Ivermectin for lice seven days after her first treatment. Is this serious for her health? And what should we do now? Thx
This is very helpful as I'm having my first issue with lice. How do you treat your coop? Would you recommend two drops on silkies, too? Thanks!
Yes, absolutely! Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you I didn't see this comment! For my coop I generally just change the bedding frequently while I am treating the birds most parasites have to have something alive to feed on so they don't stick around in the coop its self.
By mistake we gave our hen Luna a second dose of ivermectin for lice 7 days after her first treatment Is this serious for her health?
What should we do now? Thx
Do you know if the ivermectin works systemically when applied topically?
It does! Just like adding flee or tick drops to your cat or dog
If you have lice and scaley leg mites do you put a few drops on the back of neck and a few on each foot?
I would but be careful about overdosing, especially with small chickens. It may be wise to treat the issues seperately a few days apart
So my rooster has a red rash looking thing on his but and some feather loss he has scaly leg mites which I’m treating but I have never seen anything like what’s on his butt it’s like red and irritated looking any advice?
Use the same product. Most likely mites
Thanks for the video. Thinking about using ivermectin for the first time to treat my chicken's lice- is there an 'off egg' period after using? Thanks
Many people choose to abstain from the eggs for 2 weeks past the final treatment. So glad you enjoyed the video!
What methods do you use to treat your poultry for lice and mites?
What leads to the bird’s getting this? Is it poor coop maintenance?
Mostly it is caught from wild birds. Same as asking "how do animals (or people) get ticks" It's just part of life.
Will ivermectin kill the ones that hatch too plus adults
You will want to repeat the treatment every 7-10 days until it clears up just like lice in humans
I am asking for help to get my chickens to let me pick them up and hold them. Mine run from me
Yeah that is rough. Best shot is to snatch them up while they are sleeping in the coop. If they aren't handled constantly as chicks and young pullers and roos they are pretty unmanageable
Does the ivermectin have expiration date?
I cant afford $125.00 for this,,is there something else I can use
Do you with hold eggs after treatment? If so for how long?
Personally, I don't withhold eggs for my own consumption and I feel safe doing that for myself but if I am selling eggs I do a 2 week withdrawn time I would encourage you to do your own research in this area so you can make your best-informed decision some people are comfortable not doing a withdrawal and some are not comfortable with that
Thank you I will see what I can find.

No its fine. Pour on Ivermectin or any ivermectin is very safe. I put it on my dogs cats chickens and ducks. :)
Is there egg withdrawal??
HI QUALITY APPLE CIDER VINEGAR IN DRINKING WATER WILL RID LICE....3 CAP FULL PER GAL..
Sorry man this is a complete old wives' tale. ACV is wonderful for a great many things but this is not one of them.
@@TheNamelessHomestead
Absolutely. These can be a good preventative but will not kill lice/mites and most importantly will not kill their eggs which are free to hatch and carry on the life cycle
Janice - Wow Ivermectin very difficult - found something called 'Harkermectin' on Amazon no mention of chickens it was for pigeons however when looking at the opinions there were tons of people saying it works very well on chickens - hooray!
Janice - I admit I have hoped I could get rid of them by just letting them ash bathe - however, not worked as they have had red skins upper and lower tail missing feathers. This was very comprehensive - I hope I can get the Ivermectin!
Nice femal working
You can’t get them, but they can get on you and make you itch. A shower will kill them and get them off. Lol
I'm sorry -- "Break Out the Big Guns" ?? Kill them?
It's a metaphor meaning to get the most capable or strongest solution. It is not literal.
No chickens were injured or killed while making this video. Haha 😂🤣🥲
