EURO NYMPHING the BEAVERKILL River: When to use the MOP FLY

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
  • Fly fished the Beaverkill River in the Catskills of NY on Mother's Day. It was a sunny, cool, and SUPER windy day...with the nights cool as well. This made for the water temps in the upper 40s and ultimately topping out at 50 by the afternoon. The fish seemed to be in the deeper runs.
    This video is fishing one run that I ran through twice. The fly that was the most "helpful" was the mop fly. The size 12 mop with a 3.8 bead helped anchor my drift in the massive upstream wind. It is a fly that should be in your bag of tricks when the circumstances call for it.
    The other flies that produced on this day were a size 16 natural Walt's worm and a size 16 natural pheasant tail on the dropper.
    Enjoy and Tight Lines!
    Cory

    Many years ago ( late 80's or early 90's ) I fished the Beaverkill on a brutally cold day. I had to get in my car every 10-15 minutes to warm my hands or to change flies. Still I did pretty good under the circumstances. Glad to see how well you did on that river.

    As usual what a FANTASTIC video ODTB !!! You might be one of the best Euro nymphing video producers on the whole of YT and I'm not exaggerating when I say that. Just as an aside I would absolutely love it if you could do a heads up comparison of your favorite T&T Contact II rod against Joe Goodspeed's new creation the Diamondback Ideal Nymph rod. Given your expertise with the Contact II I think alot of people (mean included) would be delighted with that review. Regardless Tight Lines good sir and as always I'm looking forward to your next video 😃

    Hi Cory, I love the videos, they're very helpful. Thanks for putting all this info out there.
    I'm planning my first trip to the Catskills for next summer. I'm not trying to get a spot burn or secret pool or of you, but if you have any recommendations for my planning that would be awesome. I'm looking at possibly staying in Harvard and hitting the East Branch and Beaverkill. Anything else that's a must visit?

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  9 месяцев назад

      Glad they are helpful, Jameson. I would get Paul Weamer's Fly Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River "2nd Addition". This gives you all the areas with info on the whole Del system. The Upper EB near Harvard is great in the summer (and everything upstream). Super technical, but really nice cold water. Depending on when you go in the summer, (after June) the water temps could start getting too warm for the Beaverkill and the lower EB. It all depends how the weather has been. The lower EB, I love. Anything from confluence of the Beaverkill/Upper and Lower EB downstream. The book will have all the spots. The Beaverkill has easy to see areas. Old Route 17 parallels it for the most part and you can see the areas that look good. The state has a bunch of pull offs and its all worth it to take a look. The best part of the Beaverkill is anything downstream of Junction Pool to Horton (It's all marked).
      The Upper EB and lower EB are 2 distinctly different rivers. The WB will be cool all summer.
      Good luck to you.

      @@barbless_hook78 I have to wrap my sage esn 10’ 2 wt, it has a very smooth blank finish. I fish a moonshine epiphany 10’4” 2wt euro rod and it’s finish hasn’t been sanded so you can see the carbon wraps which are spaced about a 1/4 “ apart. With this blank, the line does not stick nearly as much. The line sticks a little but not as much as a smooth blank. This is a $300 rod and though it’s a little heavy, it fishes extremely well !! • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  2 года назад

      Thanks, Tony. I use the mop as kind of a tool. ie: windy conditions because it can anchor and hold your drift in place. I also use it in deeper runs to get down or "clean up" at the end before I move, to trigger some other bites. These are really the only time I will put it on. (it was extremely windy this day). It is one of those flies that is an attractor, yet it definitely looks like a big ole crane fly larva when tied in cream/tan. In chartreuse...it can look like a big caddis/caterpillar/inch worm. It just looks buggy. Hope this helps.

    That’s awesome work, Cory. My wife has a small rug by a patio door that has mixed brown colors in it and she yet to notice the 20 or pieces I’ve randomly cut off. Add a bead and a little green dubbing and look just like a case caddis, it works great. Without a bead it makes casting a dry dropper rig nice (on a mono rig) as it maintains some buoyancy but adds water weight to get the rig when you need to.

      Of all the indicators, yarn is my favorite because of its low impact. Honestly, a 9ft 6wt is overkill for trout in my opinion, unless you are chucking big streamers. But if it is your only rod, you can make it work.

    Great video and tips, Cory. Thanks! Curious if in open waters like this if you have a view on the difference between using a 10 foot vs 11 foot euro rod? I'm considering get a one foot extension piece for my 10 ft. 3 wt (when I'm not fishing below branches on small streams). Appreciate any thoughts you have.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, Scott. Appreciate it! When I’m fishing medium to larger streams, I’ll like the extra length. I’m not sure of the math but the difference in one foot of rod length can add 3ft of reach (depending on the angles,etc…). And sometimes that extra distance can be the difference maker. It is definitely an advantage to you.
      This video was the perfect example. I was fishing deeper water (wading above my waist). If I had my 10ft rod, there are some fish that I simply would not have reached because a lot of drifts were a vertical sighter in front of me.
      Hope this helps.

    I fished the Beaverkill today, did very well. I took your advice on the leader set up. I changed over to 20’ of 10 pound maxima, 3’ of 3x sighter, to 5x tippet. This worked very well I was able to cast perfectly and achieve great drifts at increased distances.

    The big boys came out to play Cory ! Nothing better than getting into quality fish consecutively! Would have loved to see you net that monster bow , can’t do much when he bends out your hook like that ! Great job working over that run twice ! I’ve fished that run before and it sure gets deep fast ! Good selection using a heavy mop to steady out your drift ! Excellent video buddy!

    Another awesome video! I enjoy your videos and watch them often.
    Your videos are what made me want to try euro nymphing (after 23 years of traditional fly fishing).
    I could go on...
    But just a quick question for now: Could you please recommend a budget friendly EN rod?
    I thought I could get a cheap ($100) "EN" rod to work: but of course, I can't cast the flies more than ~10'... (It's a 10' 4wt).
    Thanks for all you do!
