The Kokyu looks like a Small Shamisen, but it's usually played with a Bow (a Violin bow might work) and it's also tuned an Octave higher cause the Scale length is about half as much, and the strings are lighter gauged.
I really would like to see someone playing kokyu here in Brazil. It's common to have shamisen/sanshin in the traditional festivals, but I've never seen a kokyu before.
how lovely finding the similar or maybe same instruments around the world, its like a rebab! Almost same, but different playing technique, also produces an authentic sounds
Slavik Onyshchenko The Kokyu is tuned an Octave above the Shamisen so it has a Soprano Voice. It's kinda like having the Soprano & 3rd Tenor Sections of a Choir singing the Melody.
i was confused also because when i first heard it i couldn't figure out just what it was...it sounds like it could be either wind or stringed or something else altogether.
@@Emperatriz_Valentina It does sound cross between a Violin and a Harmonica. The Kokyu is tuned an Octave above a Shamisen which gives it a Soprano voice, the Shamisen had a Tenor voice on the other hand.
@UCcOur6s5DXxeXunh046_Y_Q The Shamisen is known for its smooth Tenor Voice. The Kokyu (very adorable little instrument) is roughly a Miniature Shamisen tuned an Octave higher so it has a Soprano Voice. Because they revived the Kokyu, I call it the Soprano voice returning to the Ensemble.
Gostaria de aprender a tocar, mas aqui no Brasil é praticamente impossível achar aulas desses instrumentos, gostaria de aprender a tocar kokyu, shamisen e ehru

According to wikipedia , it is believed that the rebab was brought to okinawa from indonesia/malaysia and it became the kokyu

Anyone realised that both instruments look similar?
your comment is like people who mistake electric basses for guitars
