    With modern medicine and extended life expectancy monarchs are living longer and their children are getting old waiting for their turn to sit on the throne. Prince Charles is 71 years old and if he outlives his mother he will be the oldest person ever to inherit the British throne. But it was not always thus. In the middle ages the average life expectancy was just 31 years old. And with royals frequently fighting in wars that meant a lot of kings died young and left their thrones to very young children. Being a monarch wasn’t easy but being an adolescent monarch was often a recipe for disastrous. Older relatives and courtiers took advantage and teenage boys with nearly unlimited power resulted in some scandalous behavior. Here are the 10 youngest kings in English history:
    10. Edgar the Peaceful
    9. Eadwig
    8. Edward III
    7. Æthelred the Unready
    6. Edward V
    5. Edward the Martyr
    4. Richard II
    3. Edward VI
    2. Henry III
    1. Henry VI

      In all likelihood if he does outlive her majesty, I seriously doubt that he will even accept the crown simply because of his own age. I believe that last I heard her Majesty was in her 90's now? And with prince Charles's own health issues I believe that in all likelihood he will more likely abdicate the crown to Prince William and Princess Kate. If only to preserve what little health he still has. And even if it does happen that her Majesty would die with Charles still alive in my opinion he would not likely live to terribly long after her death.

    I feel so sorry for Henry VI. Imagine being your country's official ruler from the age of 8 months and constantly being surrounded by "advisers" throughout your entire life telling you what to do - all of whom of course are actually serving their own self-interests. He was such a sensitive, peaceful and intellectual man and would probably have been an excellent ruler in more modern times, but was just so very wrong for a time of war and unrest. Considering the circumstances, it is no wonder at all that he eventually had such severe mental breakdowns.

      I get it! I've managed to find a "gateway ancestor" and trace my way back to a victim of the Salem witch trials, kings of France, England, Scotland, and noble houses too numerous to count. Most people who descend from European ancestors are descended from those types of lines, it's just a matter of finding the links! I actually managed to trace a few lines back over a thousand years, one all the way back to the 200s AD! That was wild! As to the archery, I got to do that for the first time over Christmas 2018 which I spent at Ashford Castle in Ireland. (If you're unaware, it's a five-star castle formerly home to the Guinness family and pretty much the most magical place on earth. Also, if you've ever seen the TV show Reign which is very loosely based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, it's the castle they use for the exterior of French Court!) It was the old-fashioned kind though, not the sporty-type archery they have these days. Which do you do? The sport type or the kind that looks like it fell out of a knight's tournament?

    I think Elizabeth Woodville gets a bad rap. From what I understand, she didn't even want to marry the King and tried to defend herself with a knife against him. I do agree that putting her relatives in all manner of official posts and peerages was not a good idea, but Earl Rivers really did try to do the best for Edward and paid for it with his life. I can't imagine how she felt after all she tried to do to save her sons came to naught. Obviously, that's why she and Margaret Beaufort had a fortuitous meeting of the minds which orchestrated the downfall of the entire Plantagenate dynasty.

    • @Lulu-ut9pv
      @Lulu-ut9pv 4 года назад +7

      I think Elizabeth wood may have done it to save her daughter Elizabeth if york, she was technically the heir to the throne but there yasnt been a female monarch since the attempt made by milltida failed miserably, hence why henry 8 made it his life mission to ensure he had a son to secure it.

    • @Orphen42O
      @Orphen42O 3 года назад

      Elizabeth Woodville's mother had in her first marriage been the Duchess of Bedford, the second lady in the land. Jacquetta Woodville probably passed a sense of entitlement on to her daughter Elizabeth. The scheming Woodvilles were definitely a detriment. Edward V had been almost exclusively raised by Anthony Rivers, Elizabeth Woodville's brother. If crowned, Edward V would have favored the Woodvilles and largely ignored his York relatives.

      If a king, whatever his sexual orientation, gives too much wealth and influence to "favorites", there are inevitably problems. It did not help that Edward II and Richard II, the two supposedly gay monarchs, could not live up to the reputations of their warrior fathers.

      Hi ya, I was originally ’World_of_A2’ but have since changed my username as to my RUclips channel name of Micegift.
      I have just seen your reply and I just wanted to make the comment that I recently saw a program that revisits Edward II’s life and they went into a huge debunk of the red hot poker theory.
      I admit that up until that point, I had always believed in that myth but I must agree with you not just because being smothered is a far kinder way to be put to death (if their is such a thing? 😟) but like the scenario with Edward V and his brother Richard, it was too easy to use Tudor propaganda against Richard III than to potentially tell the truth, of which of course we’ll never really be sure of.

This came up in a board game in which a question is asked ("How did Ethelred the Unready spend his wedding night?") and every player has to give a creative answer with the correct answer being thrown into the mix as well and everyone has to guess afterwards. And this was given as the correct answer. However, the hands-down best answer came from my friend who wrote that Ethelred the Unready spent his entire wedding night getting ready.
