  • In this video, author and depression counselor Douglas Bloch conducts an insightful interview with a group member who shares her story of recovering from both alcoholism and depression. This is known as having a "dual diagnosis." In both cases, group support and exercise were an essential part of Anne's recovery.

Anne, thank you for choosing to share story with Doug & fellow subscribers, I often check out Doug's helpful videos. I enjoyed very much your comments about working your AA program. I'm a member of AA for over 36 yrs. I'm a first timer. AA does wonders for me, it really improved my life, and it's just one day at a time.
    Be well, Thanks again.

    Hi Doug,
What a fantastic interview with that courageous lady, Anne. It seems so pertinent watching that when as we know, Noah has been going through his battle with Alcohol and how he's been updating his journey throughout. I don't thankfully have Bi-Polar or suffer with Alcoholism, but as you know I do have Depression and mild to moderate Anxiety and years ago, I did have a drug problem which most CERTAINLY exacerbated an already volatile situation.
Thankfully, I've put that behind me and my depressive episodes are much fewer and far between these days, although I'm only too acutely aware that the 'Black Dog' can rustle his lead at me and demand I take him walkies at any time he may see fit. That's the kicker about having Depression as you well know!
Keep up the great work and please, please, more interviews if you can :)
Take care and everyone else as always

Thank you for sharing . Now I'm wondering if my separated ex husband might be BP 2... He self medicates with a 3 day a week alcohol drink binge, otherwise his depression is very extreme. He stays in a room with curtains closed for days just watching tv. He always gets the depression come back after his alcoholic 3 day binge, and he won't take any GP medications eg anti depressants or have a diagnosis, since bi polar has always been the theory. Sadly for me my separated ex husband turned his moods on me and he'd have regularly frenzied outbursts against me for trivial things. I just wished I'd understood bi polar and alcoholism more thoroughly before I committed my life to him - it turned me into a nervous wreck and I lost almost everything eg I had to flee the marital home. I am now suffering deep depression and hopelessness. But I intend to rise from the ashes. It was good to hear Anne's story. I wish my husband was as rational about wanting to recover as this sensible lady. This video was most interesting 🦉

Hi Douglas, I was on Lamictal and decided to get myself off it because I didn't think it was working. But there was something I heard on another "Back from the Brink" video in which bi-polar 2 was explained...I think my doctor was right. I've been feeling weird, sad, and recently went online and spent way too much money...that happened before and it cost me a lot. Not just financially, but I also lost my relationship because of it. I don't know...what to do. Going to talk to my doctor about it.

Your experiences could be that of mania. But in order too know for sure, you will need a thorough diagnosis, so talk with your psychiatrist.

Community and connection. That is your calling Doug. It takes a village to raise a child and to comfort the depressed.
What practical advice she offers. I'm just learning about the behavioral approach she mentions. I'm often not aware of my behavior motivated by conscious or unconscious anxiety.
