I’ll never forget the feeling as a kid, the desire of wanting to see Goku defeat Frieza and feeling the desperation from the characters as the spirit bomb was being formed
When I was watching this as a kid, it literally felt (and probably did) like 6 months for this spirit bomb to form

I had a D&D campaign end by having the druid channel energy from all living things while the rest of the party kept an unstoppable evil busy until the druid could focus all the life energy into the BBEG to destroy him. It was 100% this, but nobody got the reference. Not sure if I should feel disappointed or pleased with myself that I was able to disguise the reference well enough.

Looking back, the Spirit Bomb was great but damn you dont have time to stand there like that when a paychotic maniac is after you.
It's all about building up tension. We knew Goku was no match for Frieza, we knew it was only a matter of time until Goku was beaten and worse. The spirit bomb was the writers way of giving the audience a glimpse of hope to hold onto. And it worked because once it was completed every kid who watched this show back then felt a massive relief! We just watched our hero get beaten to a pulp but now he's going to get the job done! (Obviously it didn't do the job, but in that moment the spirit bomb being complete and being launched shifts the tide for a moment)
You do when that maniac is over confident and close minded enough to where they can’t even fathom such an attack. If Frieza hadn’t spent so much time toying with the Z fighters her fought he could have probably taken all of them out in a matter of minutes.

Seeing this when I was 5 years old on Toonami made me legit think this was the final battle of the series. Everything lead up to Frieza and it felt like the end.

It’s probably less about frieza being good, and more that it just wasn’t powerful enough to do what it needed to do. Goku didn’t have enough energy, despite collecting it from multiple planets. The spirit bomb, from my understanding, has somewhat similar technicalities as a nuke: it’s unfathomably powerful by nature, but each individual instance’s true potential is based on how much input exactly goes into making the explosion.

So somehow Freiza survived that eh.. kind of takes away from the effectiveness of the spirit bomb (even though it was enough to beat Buu!)
Frieza’s durability is insane . He tanked all this and still survived getting cut in half + planet explosion
Thats because the buu spirit bomb collected energy from every creature in the galaxy while this one was only all life from namek or the solar system
Goku used nameks energy on Frieza and the energy across the Galaxy for buu that's the difference

Well Goku colleveted Energy to beat just above 50% Frieza, who himself powered up to 70-80% to survive
I like vegeta right but him being relevant took away piccolo's role as being gokus rival and becoming his right hand man. Here piccolo was vital in Goku launching the attack and also saved his life in which we all know moments after Goku turned ssj. Vegeta took a similar role Vs kid buu which I enjoyed but man nothing beats the final parts to this battle. Toriyamas best work ended at namek being blown up

It was the spirit bomb that made frieza extremely strained as well as frieza not training himself at full power that made him lose big.
There are people who are saying that the Spirit Bomb can't destroy with a pure heart, but here are reasons why that's not true & these statements are made Miguel Soriano.
1. When Goku told Gohan that if he had no evil in him then it wouldn't was due to the fact that King Kai told Krillen to feel Vegeta's evil energy. That's why Gohan was able to bounce it off & deflect it back to Vegeta.
2. King Kai literally said that if Goku wasn't the Spirit Bomb it could destroy the Earth & Goku literally told himself this on Planet Namek when he was preparing it against Frieza.
Gohan,Krillen, Goku & Piccolo were both ducking out of the way when it hit Frieza. I'm going to add that if it couldn't destroy with a pure heart then they shouldn't have needed to get out of the way to do so.
3. Goku was afraid that of it killing Vegeta when he was using it on Kid Buu.
Ego man, ego is almost always reasons these villains be taking the biggest L in the end.
Fun fact about the Spirit Bomb, it’s a Ki locked energy attack, meaning once it’s locked onto its intended target, their is no escaping it, you either hold it off and survive the impact or you die, this was the closet Frieza has ever come to dying at this point in his life.

Only the heart of pure evil would be completely destroy by the spirit bomb. The fact that Vegeta and Frieza survive it means they weren't entirely evil. In their heart there may still be a speck of goodness somewhere in them. This is why only Kid Buu got destroy and why Super Buu was begging Vegeta and Goku to not return him to that form.

6:39 Frieza as powerful as he was he purposely was holding back on Goku but when the spirit bomb almost killed him he powered up to 100% to shield him from the attack but he was too late because the impact destroyed his tail and knocked the wind out of him.
If he was at full power to begin with the spirit bomb would have no effect on him.
