I think the welds are OK. They’re going to be obscured by the lights anyway and also if you don’t have to grind the welds out then you will less cost of Manufacturing.
Make them out of aluminum, bend the 90 degree with a break press. They can be manufactured in large quantities and even anodized for cheap enough to turn quite a profit, while still providing a good quality piece that isn’t going to add to the weight of the lift gate.
I’m still learning. Aluminum has come to mind. This method although plenty strong I don’t think it’s necessary since the lights don’t weigh much. I have stopped stocking these but maybe a comeback your way! Can probably make them at a lower price point this way to

I like the bottom side. I would leave the welds alone.
