I took the muffler off and banged it a few times as i didn't see any signs of mud dobbers, put the muffler back on and its been running for hours... my mind is blown. I had the start stop symtoms and tried almost everything. Thank you for saving me a ton of time
I was driving myself crazy trying to find out what in the world was wrong with mine. Broke down the carb and cleaned it up twice, cleaned out the fuel on/off valve, cleaned and flushed the fuel pump, cleaned the fuel tank and all hoses and it would still run for a second and die. I stumbled across your vid, lo and behold freakin mud dobbers had gotten into the muffler!!! Couldn’t see anything looking right at it but shined a light inside and they it was. You sir, are a life saver!
Thanks Jody!! After cleaning the carb twice I couldn't figure out what the problem was, then I saw your post, and it was bang on!! Cleaned it out, then started right up!!!
Thank you thank you i spent many hours trying to work out why it was starting then stop with in a second and die. I was about to give up until i stumbled across this video.
You nailed it.. My brand new EU 2000 I sit over the summer with good gas. It would start then go dead. After watching your video i went and looked but could see nothing in the exhaust port. So i took an air hose and blew it out . dirt blew out the hole and it cranked on the 1st pull. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH FOR THE INFORMATION.
Well, I'll add my THANKS!! to the comments too!! I have 2 of these EU2000i's. Put new carbs on both, new spark plugs, one, I took completely apart, replaced every fuel line and fuel pump, even removed the little filter in the line going to the fuel tank... Watched this video and had the BOTH running in 15 minutes or less!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!👍👍
Was at a dirtbike track, with all my camera equipment ready and generator ran perfect all night last night, woke up this morning out of gas, topped off the generator and still nothing. Went through numerous troubleshooting steps and still nothing, I thought I was out of luck. Stumbled across your video and thought ‘yeah right, no way that’s right’ took off the exhaust and what do you know!! Exactly what you said. lol everything works like a charm now and AC is back!!
My Honda Hippo would run for a few seconds.... cleaned the carb, again, then ran in an ultrasonic cleaner. tried bypassing the oil safety switch.... same... was going to trash heap it... one last try and found this vid, THANKS SO MUCH!!! I would have never thought to check it. the exhaust was stopped up....nothing came out of it, i pushed a zip tie into it and it broke through whatever was stopping it.
Cheers for the video! My city is due to have a decent cyclone and our genny was doing the same thing. Thank you so much! Have a great rest of your year
Your a wizard sir! I have cleaned the tank, the jet and emulsion tube multiple times. Pulled the exhaust all the way off and she fired right up. I have yet to recover any debris out of the exhaust fixing to cram my power washer in it. Thanks for the tip!!!!!!!!
I put my lips on the exhaust after pulling it off and I could not blow any air through it. Stuck the power washer in it and cleaned it out. Put it back together and viola!
Mate - same as most of the other posts, I cleaned the carb twice, changed fuel and spent hours cursing and almost loosing my mind. You nailed it. Thanks
Yes! A big thank you from me too. Went through the same process, disk plug, cleaned jets ... I even looked at the muffler and saw that the exhaust port was a solid flat surface, but I didn't realize what it was until I watched your video. Thanks again!
Dude! I don't want to admit how many hours were spent stuffing about with the carby trying to get the damn generator going.... Watched this video, checked the exhaust, and sure enough..... damn bug made his home in there! Many thanks!
Fantastic! Thank you so much for your video, I overhauled the carburetor twice before coming across this video and discovered mud wasps had completely covered the muffler's hole! 😆
thanks I'll be trying this out very soon... bought it used and took it on my first camping trip... it'll run for about 5 mins to 1hr max and then die out
Brilliant ! exact same problem here in NZ. I took carb to pieces, changed fuel etc. Still ran for 1sec then stopped. Saw your video, poked a screwdriver into exhaust, broke up the Mason Bee mud nest blocking the exhaust. Started 2 pulls later and running sweet.. Huge thanks !!
I wish this was my issue. Mine was running, then ran dry overnight while I slept. Fueled it up and went to start it the next morning and it would crank, run, the die after only a few rotations of the crank. Considering it was running for over 24 hours, I'm fairly confident a dirt dobber did not build a nest during the night. I'm going to check anyhow, but it's a 2008 and has had fuel left in it a couple times. On a side note, there's an additive called Mechanic in a Bottle, that stuff is VERY good at getting things running again that have had fuel left in them for an extended period. I also just ordered a fuel pump cutoff switch to add to it from Hutch Mountain (on Amazon) so you can shut off the pump to allow the carb to run dry, but not have to pour out fuel or run the whole generator dry. That company also apparently has the link cables to run similar Honda inverter gen sets that they state are tougher than the Honda cables. Check them out for their Honda accessories! They also sell a propane conversion kit so you can make your Honda dual-fuel. I was thinking of converting my 2000i but I think I'm just going to get the Predator 5000, it has remote start and already dual-fuel capable since the conversion kit is $300, I'll just put that towards a larger generator that can run the travel trailer size I'm wanting to buy in the future, plus this should run everything I need in power outage situation, like now here near Houston thanks to Beryl. Centerpointless states it will be days before they are working in my area.
WOW. Now I have to check, Don't worry about time spent. You have learned something an showed it to all of us. Thanks. P.S. that was the problem. Many Thanks
I loved this. Those pesky little mud wasps are a menace for us too. I discovered another thing that I hadn't seen elsewhere - there's a switch on top of the gas cap. That was my problem. The switch that I forgot all about was halfway between On and Off. At least my muffler is all cleaned out now, though. :-)
Thanks mine is doing this today after power went out due to Hurricane Matthew except mine actually ran for about 30minutes before doing this I'm about to check it out now. Wanted to comment and thank you for your video in case I get too busy trying to fix it and forget. THANKS.
Mine was a simple fix. I drained the carb with the adjustment screw and I forgot to turn the plastic gas CAP to the "on" position. I forgot there was a "on/off" switch on the cap. Runs fine now.
I just got this today and had trouble staying on, thanks to the Vato that said the gas cap has a on off switch. I almost had a breakdown lol...no power here in Redding CA due to high winds, fire danger danger
I was hoping my EU1000i will be the same cause. Regrettably it isn't the case / does the same with the muffler off. I have changed spark plug, dismantled and cleaned carburetor and hoped to see it solved when I saw partially blocked main jet. Nothing changed. Can anybody please suggest what should be the next thing to test / try?
Definition of mud dauber ( dirt dobber ). : any of various wasps (especially family Sphecidae) that construct mud cells in which the female places an egg with spiders or insects paralyzed by a sting to serve as food for the larva.
@@jodychrisman6505 ok... I doubt this is the problem with mine. As it's 20 degrees below zero here and this just started happening. I will check it though. Also, will keep this in mind as a possible culprit if it happens in the summer time! Thanks for the video!

Thank you. I didnt have to spend alot of hour on this thanks to you.
Thankyou so much, the amount of hours I've spent trying to work out what was wrong with mine, ahh it's humming now 👏
Awesome. Was the exact problem on mine. Spent hours cleaning carb and fuel system and wouldn't stay running!!
Thanks for this info I pull my muffler off and mine runs fine 👍👌

Thanks for your video. It save me from losing my mind…!

So is it worth getting some kind of cap for my exhaust, for storage? I see dirt daubers exist in my area.
I use masking tape now to sill up all holes on the generator now. They were building on the inside of the unit.
