Fans have theorized that Riley is able to control himself after the change and not give into temptation because he was an alcoholic. He has struggled with and overcome his addiction so he has a level of control that allowed him not to give in to the bloodlust.
I think it's also because he's an atheist, He did not believe the Angel and Bible stuff and that it is a good thing. He saw it for what it was and knew he didn't want that for himself and all the people he loved. And because he was a recovering alcoholic, he had the knowledge how to stop himself.
Hamish Linklater is fucking goated for his performance as father Paul. He manages to be sweet, charming, intense, scary - sometimes all in the same scene.
The fact that he never got any nominations for this role infuriates me to this day. Him playing Monsignor Pruitt is one of my the best acting performances I’ve ever seen.
That "I did my best" from Riley always made me teary. There's relief and regret there, after a long fight against addiction but moreover, carrying guilt and regret, the pain of the survivor's guilt, to finally find a good reason to stop fighting, one that is justified.
24:09 the way he switches demeanor within a second is insane. Hamish Linklater’s acting is astoundingly good. I don’t know how he hasn’t been casted in tons of new projects after this show, but I hope we get to see more of him eventually. I can’t think of anyone to compare him to, he is just incredible.
this is my favorite episode of this show, and rewatching it always shatters my heart a bit more. what really gets me every time is riley realizing this "gift" he was forced into accepting is just a more lethal, worse version of his alcoholism. to be doomed to an eternity of not only craving something above all reason but knowing said thing can only be aquired through some form of violence after actively battling your addiction for years is incredibly cruel and i under his choice completely.
That's a cool thought. I personally always linked his painting style to the effects of Psilocybin, which I found a bit of a cheat code. But he used a lot of zinc- and lead white paints in his paintings which drove a lot of painters mad because of their high toxicity and because they are easily absorbed through the skin. This effectively made him suffer from 'painters madness' which leads to a lot of different illnesses including psychosis.
I only knew Hamish Linklater from The New adventures of old Christine but holy cow he's an amazing actor!! Clearly the scripts are incredibly amazing and the whole story is just pure gold, but the way he delivers his lines is just 🧑🏻🍳💋🤌🏻
My friend is Catholic, so after this episode I asked him whether suicide was still sinful if you're a vampire. His response was straightforward: Martyrdom. A person who chooses to remain in the sun and perish may be thought of not as taking their own life but as being martyred by vampirism. "Technical term is martyrdom of charity. Caritas, altruistic love for one's neighbor. Someone is killed on account of loving mankind."
I always thought Erin lost her baby because the blood heals you, since baby is something alien in the body, it got rid of it to improve her health and condition.
I always took it as vampire lore doesn’t exist in this universe so it makes more sense that they don’t ever call it one and why Paul seen it as an angel.
also paul was an old man with dementia at the time, he was attacked by an " angel" and then woke up forty years younger, maybe it was wishful thinking on his part
Something I found out the otherday Erin (Kate Siegel) is married to Mike Flanagan they have a daughter called Theodora named after her character from hill house , also paul/Monsignor is married to Nora from AHS…two useless facts for you😂
Technical stuff for people who know religious studies. Catholic priests can't celebrate Mass on Good Friday (or on Holy Saturday). They can't wear red on Good Friday; they wear black. And they don't wear a chasuble (the garment that looks like a poncho) on Good Friday, because you only wear that when you celebrate Mass. They can celebrate Mass after the sun goes down on Saturday because, technically, once the sun goes down it's Sunday according to the Jewish calendar.
I'm not crying, you're crying.😢 Cojo is absolutely right about Hamish Linklater, as all the comments I'm seeing agree. He is so good. He NEEDS to be in so much more stuff, it's actually criminal that he's not in as much as humanly possible. I mentioned in an earlier episode that I'd only seen him in a small but well-acted roll in the PHENOMENAL HBO show The Newsroom with the great Jeff Daniels. Never expected this level of performance from him, honestly, but we were truly blessed with him nonetheless. I'm so stoked at how much you guys are loving this show!
We follow Riley as the main character, ending with Erin taking up the mantle. On a side note, what happened to Riley on the boat is similar to Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC), a real phenomenon in which a person suddenly bursts into flames with intense heat, while their surroundings remain remarkably unaffected by the fire.
not to um actually but shc isnt really spontaneous combustion and pretty much all instances of it were found after the person was already dead. most cases also have a likely source of where the fire started too and its considered a pseudoscience
40:52 I agree, Midnight Mass is Flanagan's best work so far, and he's been writing it for such a long time now, he even teased it as a book in Gerald's Game. I think Midnight Mass is the most cohesive storytelling I've ever seen and the entire story is wrapped up neatly by the end of it.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Being an addict his whole life and then taking someones life due to that gave him the wisdom that he couldn't change the hunger, the addiction, and that he would end up hurting someone else. His shame (which the preacher lacked) gave him the courage to change what he could.
11:40 And what's going on with Blake and Cojo lmao. Also... they don't have to stay on the island. They could leave at night feed on people like a crusade.
I think one of the most brilliant aspects of this series is its demonstration of how easily scripture can be twisted to rationalize and justify the most awful and insane things.
You haven't watched a real vampire series or movie if you havent seen any combust. That ending is inspired by 30 Days of Night, a vampire movie you need to react to!
when cojo i think it was literally talked about riley catching on fire back in ep2 i wanted to screammmm lmao you guys and the accidental accuracy are like this 🤞🏼
41:30 The risks Flannigan is willing to take makes these shows pay off so much more, from the writing to the actual execution. It never feels like you can relax watching one of his works, you get sucked in instead.
Just goes to show how smart and experienced Mildred is. She knows when someone is using religion to fuel their agenda. While others were easily blinded by the faith, Mildred saw through the scheme.
This series does SUCH a good job highlighting the similarities between mainstream Christianity/Catholicism, which is so widely seen as the "good" and "normal" religion, and every other non-Christian belief system that is typically viewed (by the Bevs of the world, at least) as inhumane, savage, evil, devil-worship, etc... We're forced to look at the practices and scriptures through this lens, and it's horrific. It really goes to show that ANY religion is capable of being misconstrued, that ANY kind of faith leader is capable of manipulating a whole community to do monstrous things while believing it's right and just, that cults can form from ANYWHERE. And the show does this in such a way that is still so *respectful* of Christianity/Catholicism and still showcases the beauty of faith and all the positive potential it has alongside the negative. I feel like you could show this to the most strict, hard-wired Bible thumper and they would actually come out of it with a shift of perspective rather than just stubborn rejection up-front, because regardless of what you believe, the show is so genuinely thought-provoking.
1:22 When a person gets pregnant, the body's immune system is triggered and how it "attacks and cures" this illness is by going through pregnancy so uh, yeah that was a good train of thought Corey. (I'm kinda guessing because it's just what my mom had to go through to have me, white blood cell therapy with my dad, where they trained her body to react to his cells and in turn, react when a fertilized egg with his dna reached the wom ).
What a contrast to see at the end. Riley is at peace finally, while Erin is in hell and terrified. Rileys dream always ended with the sunrise as did his life. Crazy foreshadowing.
I think it was a genius choice to leave Riley's death open-ended. Was he having a dream to end all dreams, or was he being welcomed to Heaven by the one person whose forgiveness he desperately wanted?
One of the worst and at the same time most real parts of this series is Bev Keane. I have known, in person, people like her. Able to twist any scripture to their purpose.
Regarding the baby. What actually happened was she had Miscarriage while sleeping, but since vampire blood heals she did felt any pain. And Vampire blood also washed all waste out of her body.
No, it's explained in the show. A fetus is essentially a parasitic organism feeding off of the mother to develop. The body has to deliberately weaken its own immune system while pregnant so that the fetus isn't attacked, but the Vampire Blood is very, very aggressive in repairing the body. It overrides that response and destroys the child because it registers it as a foreign entity.

The Fall of the House of Usher, (2023)

And that's also the reason he killed himself, because as an addict he knew he would probably eventually give in and kill someone.

"I did my best." what a heartbreaking thing to say seconds before your death. This show, man. A fucking masterpiece.
I just realized the mom looking for her missing son says the same thing earlier in the episode 🤯

Hamish Linklater is the🐐🐐🐐. He's playing the priest in Mike Flanagan's new Exorcist movie.
Omg I didn’t know that! That’s amazing, I can’t wait to see it!
Can't wait!!!!!
The last thing the world needs right now is yet another exorcist movie imo, but if anyone can pull it off it’s THE Mike Flanagan and Hamish!
Mike Flanagan needs to stay linked to him. He’s such a great actor.
@@MichelleseaChelle Flanagan needs to stay LINKEDlater 😆
Riley is a true MVP, not only for spilling the truth about Father Paul, but also for not hurting anyone while being a vampire. rip
Hamish Linklater deserves all the awards for this performance, to be honest.
