I came to the comments to say exactly this. This isn’t my favorite of his shows, but that may be my favorite scene from any of his shows. Mike Flanagan’s monologues are all amazing, but that scene just HITS
The boyfriend I had in 2022 watched this with me and we discussed the death monologues for hours. He passed away that next January very suddenly and I still get so choked up watching this. Miss you Jake, hope you got answers ❤
I'm sorry for your loss...it must be really hard for you. I also lost someone abruptly in 2021. She was my soulmate, my savior. A month before she was murdered, we talked about death and how the idea of death is her biggest fear, ceasing into nothingness for eternity. She was reading a book called "Dying: a memoir" before she died...I should've seen them as signs...I wish she could see this scene, it would maybe give her some comforts, that the idea of death and what happens to us after doesn't matter, we just have to believe what can comfort us, so we can cope with it, because death will come for us all eventually and living with the fear of death isn't living.
So sorry for you. These sort of things gives me shills. Reily's explanation give me solace on what will happen next. If there's no Heaven then at the very least if this is how it happens after we die, it may not be too bad. The biggest for me is losing the memory of who I was. I guess we sort of join the cosmos but hopefully not too much into nothingness.
As a man who lost my first boyfriend in 2018. This shit hurt. 😢 We both talked so much about death, we were 17. He was too curious i guess, he did it to himself. Hoping they both got a good afterlife or plain nothing if that's what they preferred.
I looove the parallel of Joe and Paul having withdrawals. Joe was able to stop himself while the religious guy gave in the minute he had an opportunity. It's like a commentary on some religious folk judging addicts for not being able to control themselves and "giving into temptation" when they're hypocrites and just as vulnerable by their body's urges.
That image of Paul eating out of Joe's head like a watermelon is BURNED into my brain. One of the best horror images ever. And the jumpscare at the end? Lost my shit. Also also, Samantha Sloyan's performance as Bev in this episode WOW
As someone who plays violin I often miss having something as nice and weighty as that C string on the cello, and fuck it must feel so satisfying to just be able to put your full weight onto the bow and pull on that thing
Cojo is saying the quiet part out loud XD Yes, we all know that she only forgave Joe because she got her walking back and she probably never would have if she didn't.
I never thought about that, but that's probably true. Something about that "forgiveness" scene never sat right with me. Yes, it's very touching, but it also seems kind of self righteous. It was like "you're a piece of shit, and I hate you. You're not worthy of forgiveness, but I forgive you anyways. Look at how good and forgiving I am." She could have been like "this is very hard for me because I'm still angry, but you don't have to punish yourself anymore. We can both move on from it. If you want my forgiveness, you've got it."
@@cullenarthur8879 Yeah, honestly her forgiveness was more of a jab than a genuine letting go. It was like "I forgive you only because I know you'll never forgive yourself, and I'm glad" someone who truly forgives a person doesn't have ill will, but she definitely did, she wanted him to continue to suffer. And I'm not saying I blame her, it would take a much MUCH bigger person to forgive him, and especially since he seems to wallow in self-pity and alcohol instead of doing something to try to do his best to make amends.
One of the themes of this show is that it’s a commentary on religious fanaticism. It’s fascinating what people can convince themselves is justified when they can use scripture to back it up. Bev is a master at using scripture to support anything. I think she truly believes she’s right. And the mayor and Sturge didn’t follow Bev because they were cowards. She convinced them it was God’s will to do it.
Father Paul walking into the night for the first time as a vampire is one of my favourite scenes in the season. The acting, direction and the music come together to create a scene that is both beautiful and creepy.
I really loved the monologues about death. I really liked how there were two different beliefs and it was very respectful. Something we really don't see IRL very often
the monologue about death in this ep and another monologue in a later ep are so good. most criticisms I’ve seen about this show have been that it was too wordy and monologue-y. I think it’s actually where it shines.
and to add to what Corey said, those monologues absolutely hit different if you’ve watched someone die. especially if you have any questions about what happens to the self after death. when my mom died last year I was holding her hand and kept thinking about a later monologue. I wrote it down and read it sometimes when I’m feeling sad about her being gone.
Erin's story reminds me of my wife's. She woke and knew she had to get away from her ex when she got pregnant, unfortunately she miscarried before being able to get away. This episode hit her so hard.
Definitely!!! Many reactors made the mistake of watching the first chapter in English and it's so different!! Nothing compares to the original language!! You always have to see things in their original language!!!
In case you didn’t notice. When Paul lied about where Joe was visiting his sister. He knew Paul was lying because she passed right before he got back from jail when the Monsignor was on his trip so he didn’t know she died
I think Midnight Club is good just bummed it got cancelled. House of Usher is still my favorite Mike show he has movies too called Hush and Gerald’s Game you guys should check out for Halloween movies!!! His familiar actors are in those movies!
I completely agree with how the monologues gave that “draggy” feeling overall for the episode. They were very well written and I’m sure it’s more for the people who could personally relate to it on a deeper level.
Oh I can’t wait for your reaction to Dark! It’s hands down my favorite show ever! I know you guys will love it too! Just make sure to watch it in German with subtitles.
John Andrew Grush plays the church organ. He's one of the "Newton Brothers" who composed/arranged the music for "Midnight Mass." If you've taken the tainted communion "wine" and die, you'll be a full-fledged vampire. Right now, all those people are only half-vampire. Riley's dream seems to me an ominous premonition. His ability to see the future must be tied to the ghost he sees, I'm guessing. I think Riley's monologue about death is Flanagan talking.
Flanagan's work is always a treat. With the talk about Midnight Club and Dark, I was curious if The Fall of The House of Usher is on the docket. Sorry if this was stated somewhere already.
I think they said after House of Usher is either going to be Dark or Midnight Club here on YT. And there will be a Patreon poll to vote, which even of you are not a member I believe you can still vote in. I personally vote for watching Dark! Cheers!
Now that you guys have seen the entire series, I can share this - i think it’s really interesting how they never say the word “vampire” not even one time throughout the whole show. I think it’s to leave some room open for other interpretations or maybe it’s just so that this show didn’t get labeled as purely another show about vampires because it’s so much more than that
I'm not sure it's so much that Leeza only forgave Joe once she could walk again, but that she had been having all these thoughts and feelings about him all this time, but for one reason or another she couldn't voice them until now (presumably linked to her newfound independence now that she's not wheelchair bound)
This is my second-favorite Mike Flanagan series. Only The Haunting of Hill House surpasses it and only by a very narrow margin. Masterful storytelling.
I watched Dark both in German w/ English subtitles and again with English captioning. It’s so much better in German, just a recommendation when you get there
The "ten minute monologs " you "critiqued" are central to the entire theme of the show. The vampire stuff is a metaphor for something else (I'll let you work that out), while the story is actually more about existential dread: a fear of the unknown, and the question of "what happens after we die." Improve your attention span, and what this show delivers is poetry and philosophy. But don't fear, there is plenty of blood coming up as well.
To Cojo's point from the intro...I think Lisa was probably so moved by the "miracle" that she assumes was from God during the church service, that she feels some sort of grace that compels her to let go of any resentment towards Joe. I don't think it was as simple as 'I can walk now, so I forgive you.' Because of this, I don't think her forgiveness would go away if her ability to walk goes away again because she feels now that God is directly involved.
It will NEVER not be funny seeing Igli's baffled/shocked face. The guy should be in a horror movie or something. Everytime I see it in thumbnail, I burst out laughing.
Jumping off of what Igli said about people seeing that discussion about religion in schools and going to watch the show not knowing what it was really about, I imagine this hapenned with a few christians too but because of other scene. I've seen that scene of Leeza's miracle at the end of episode 2 in some christian pages and people asking the name of the show on the comments, so I'm sure some of them started watching the show not expecting it would have so many nuanced discussions about religion and christiniaty lol
1:32 - 1:57 OH MY GOD?? that’s what kind of happened with me LOL. like, i watched that specific scene before, and i believe it was like an instagram reel or something, so when i started watching midnight mass and came across that scene, i recognized and said “ohh so that’s what where that scene is from”. mind.. was blown. never thought it was from here lol.
I agree with Cojo (2:39); it did seem like Leeza only forgave Joe because she got the ability to walk again. It did seem like she would not have forgiven him had she remained unable to walk. And he made a good point about what would happen if that got reversed- is that forgiveness conditional on being healed? Good point
I’m here! ❤ Cojo I get you! Is like those idols who say sorry only because they got caught. This is just not forgiveness they try to tie it down with religion and learning to forgive so her saying sorry only because she could walk to me doesn’t feel sincere. The other guys asking you well would you have forgiven? There’s parents in real life that have forgiven their kids kliiers and they didn’t get their kids back.
i was raised super religious - not catholic, mind u, but still - and the part of this show that was so deeply unnerving was bev quoting scripture and it being "accurate". these are verses I grew up hearing, and often was really afraid of as a kid, so to have them recontextualized in this way to highlight the way religious texts can be misinterpreted or used to advance certain ideas, was a hard watch at times! bev is frustrating and enraging, but she is also the most unsettling part of this show for me. i think this is definitely one of those shows that hits different when you grew up with people like the ones in this show.
Omg yesss, definitely watch Dark first!! Best show I have ever watched hands down. Can't wait for your reaction. (and yes, most definitely watch it in German)
Love your reactions, but some of you guys are missing the point of Midnight Mass. It's not really a vampire story show. It's using that as a moral critique of how easily religion & faith can be manipulated for control to fuel cruelty & violence. Scripture can be interpreted any way you want. And also to challenge you on what death means. As the show asks several times: what do YOU think happens when you die? No one has the answer & that's the truth. That's why this is my favorite Flanagan show.
Poor Joe.. I love how this show says a lot about one thing without actually saying anything while saying a whole lot about other things.. Boys be cookin'..even if some of them like domestic swill pee water beer, but I absolutely agree about the placement and its impact on the pacing with the monologues this eppy, so I can let the beer slide..🙂
Just saw I wish I had an angel performed live. In my head that's the soundtrack of Midnight Mass now. Did you like ep 6? The whole build up is just the best.
1:43 it’s me! I saw the scene with Bev and Hassan and was like f yeah how awesome for a piece of media to have such a well informed view on Islam as someone who was raised Muslim. I actually already was a fan of Mike Flanagan and somehow missed this show, but had watched all his others so I wasn’t too shocked when I started watching it 😂
I have one question for Bev. Why would GOD send a holy creature to Crocket that can't even stand in the sun light? I think she knows Paul is evil and doesn't care.
literally going to join the patreon just so I can vote for you guys to definitely watch the midnight club! that series is so special to me, I really hope you'll end up watching it
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 I’m gay and fully aware of that, and I clearly stated that is why “She” didn’t partake, I didn’t say the entirety of the gay community.Good Try though.
Guys, there is reacting and then there is predicting. The level of predicting that you all do on this show is off the charts. The constant talking and predicting outweighs the actual reacting to what's happening. It is so frustrating to not be able to hear dialogue because you're constantly talking and we miss what's happening in the scene.
OMG!!! "DARK" yeah!!! 🙏🏻 If Flanagan's universe is good, "Dark" is a thousand times better!!! Leave "The Fall of the House of Usher" for another time and start with "Dark", please!!! 😃🙏🏻
I loved House of Usher 🥲 the best Poe adaptations I’ve ever seen… Midnight Club is the only Flanagan project that kinda bored me at times, but that’s bc it was intended for a far younger audience than me.
I recommend jumping straight into DARK after Fall of the House of Usher. It’s a true masterpiece, probably Netflix’s best show of all time and while Midnight Club is good, since it got cancelled there’s basically just a lot of things being built up only to be left with a lot of unanswered questions. DARK is definitely the way to go.
Yall should definitely watch the Midnight Club...if people don't want yall to, please at least watch it on your own time. It's a great show. Completely different, but great!

That monologue between the two about death is maybe the best writing Flanagan has done. Incredible stuff.
It's my favorite monologs. Just solace, respect for each other, listening, and love. 😭😭 I can't get through it without tearing up

The use of the Cello at the suspenseful scenes is something straight out of Jaws and it is just perfection!

it reminds of the sound from another vampire movie, Fright Night.

I have one question for Bev. Why would GOD send a holy creature to Crocket that can't even stand in the sun light? I think she knows Paul is evil and doesn't care.
literally going to join the patreon just so I can vote for you guys to definitely watch the midnight club! that series is so special to me, I really hope you'll end up watching it
Yayyy🎉
Ohhh but just wait for what actually happens 😅
LETS GOOOO
Dark is the better series by far!❤ Skip Midnight Club
Skip midnight clube guys. Imo
Replace the spot with Hush and Doctor Sleep
The doctor also has not taken communion, only her mother. Since she’s gay, she does not support the church.
I'm sure there are gay people that take communion. lol
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 I’m gay and fully aware of that, and I clearly stated that is why “She” didn’t partake, I didn’t say the entirety of the gay community.Good Try though.
@@Christian_Adonis1 You said she did not partake cause she was gay. What does that have anything to do with anything? lol
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 -Why are you pressed about my comment, keep it moving whiny.
@@dc-mz5xr Agreed
Yo, Your not alone Cojo. I swear I said the same thing.
For the love of god watch Dark subbed, not dubbed.
They are watching it like a sport game. lol
Yikes. The way y'all all completely missed one of the most emotional moments of this whole season as they discussed what death and loss were...
the fall of house of Usher next please❤❤❤❤
OMG!!! "DARK" yeah!!! 🙏🏻 If Flanagan's universe is good, "Dark" is a thousand times better!!! Leave "The Fall of the House of Usher" for another time and start with "Dark", please!!! 😃🙏🏻
I haven't even watched Dark but I'll second this, skip The Fall of the House of Usher (wasn't great), do Midnight Club and Dark!!
We already starting watching House of Usher, but Dark will be here before you know it!
I loved House of Usher 🥲 the best Poe adaptations I’ve ever seen… Midnight Club is the only Flanagan project that kinda bored me at times, but that’s bc it was intended for a far younger audience than me.
@@RaggedyPackThank you! Was gonna say don’t y’all dare skip The Fall of the House of Usher! ❤
Please do DARK.
The best show from start to finish. Absolutely amazing ♾️
Riley’s dream was his premonition. During the death monologues between him and Erin, he says that he’s not getting off the island.
The Midnight Club is superior to Fall of the House of Usher
SKIP SKIP SKIP SKIP MIDNIGHT CLUB!!!!!!! pleaseeeee DARK is so much better!
Just skip Midnight Club. It's not that good...
Hot take. The death dialog went on too long. I would killed half of it.
26:35 I only realized now how ironic it is that Joe became paralyzed before he died, karma for what happened to Leeza
Yall should definitely watch the Midnight Club...if people don't want yall to, please at least watch it on your own time. It's a great show. Completely different, but great!
