Why has the South China Sea become so contentious?

- Many predict the South China Sea could soon become the scene of a showdown between two super powers, with one third of global trade passing through it.
Month after month, an increasingly violent battle for dominance is being fought in its contested waters. But why is the sea so disputed?
Sky's Data and Forensics correspondent Tom Cheshire explains.

There is no need to repeat UNCLOS again and again, sovereignty precedes UNCLOS, and that's why Australia, Canada, China, France, Italy, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russia, United Kingdom and many other countries do not accept any of the procedures provided for in Section 2 of Part XV of the Convention.

@@tibetanchineseofchina The fact that China signed and ratified UNCLOS but refuses to follow its provisions means China doesn't abide by its own word. China should just withdraw from UNCLOS if it is unable to follow it. At least countries like the US have the integrity not to sign UNCLOS, and then ignore the provisions that don't favor its interest while telling other countries to follow international law.
@@tibetanchineseofchina that doesn't really matter because China is a signatory of UNCLOS. West Philippine Sea is the only local name for the portion of Philippine EEZ inside South China Sea. Philippines don't claim the whole South China Sea, only the part that was under its own EEZ. Anything outside of that, Philippines don't care and has no jurisdiction.
So yes, it is correct to call it South China Sea since that is the international name of it which is the whole sea in that region.

It's disputed by countries of the South East Asia region and last time I looked on a map, the USA, UK and rest of Europe are not countries of the region. At no time has international shipping been threatened by such a dispute as it is.
The last time I checked, several trillion dollars worth of global trade, about a third, goes though the South China Sea, meaning there are very obvious economic security interests by those who use those sea lanes, which includes European countries and North American countries, for continued open access to those waters, which is precisely what is threatened by Chinese militarism. The idea that a third of the world's maritime trade will occur on the good will of a particular government, especially one that routinely weaponises trade even if it feels just upset at any criticism, is unprecedent and will be seen as unacceptable economic risk by many governments.
Last time I checked, everybody said Russia and Ukraine War will not affect everyone. Now everyone has an inflation problem
Because China would like to control the Western Pacific starting with South China Sea and Taiwan by downplaying the EEZ of its small neighbors and muscling its way!
imagine unironically thinking that the CCP won't weaponize the SCS area if the west just backs off. Goddamned wumaos I swear.
80% of china’s crude oil supply passes through this waters. They are securing this waters and will be vital in the event of war.
Surrounding countries will be attacked by china whether neutral or not.
Beijing priority is always Taiwan but they need a secured supply route for crude oil.

West Philippine Sea is a made up name by Aquino III to get the world to side with PH but no country fell for it because international law sides with China on the SCS claims.

There is no philippines. Even now, your country name is a colonialist name.
@@IA100KPDTthere is no china also, china is only a former slave country of Japan and Mongolia.
A war with China is also a war with whole of Southeast Asia. Most of Southeast Asian modern post-war economies from Bangkok to Jakarta and Manila were built by industrialists of Chinese descent with Singapore, a majority ethnic Chinese city-state as financial hub. This will affect sizeable part of world population.
A war with China would definitely effect the whole region, but to say that other countries would join on China's side due to infrastructure ties, or even indebtment, is a huge stretch to put it lightly. Especially considering the strict neutrality of nations like Singapore and Indonesia. As well as already existing defensive ties between the United States and many of these countries. China is hemmed in by their rivals, and lashing out isn't helping them make new friends.
China grabs economic influence whenever and wherever it can, but has little to no real military allies. Even their so called "friends without limits" like Russia, and their neighbor in North Korea have knives at their backs, and we've even seen these limits in the Ukranian conflict. Convenient friends against the world order, but not much help for coordinating in a global conflict. Unlike the United States and their Pacific allies as well as NATO
SEA wouldn't care because they would say non interference in internal affairs. despite what ccp had done, wha has SEA done?
Maybe Chinese are not as well like in Southeast Asia as they themselves believe. The video showing a Chinese ship chasing down, ramming and sinking Vietnamese fishing boat in the South China Sea is still on RUclips.
