    The language in the Netherlands’ song is called Sranantongo. The language was banned by the Netherlands during colonial times because slaves used it to communicate with each other. It’s incredibly powerful that a song about slavery, sung in a language forbidden by colonizers is now representing set country without being censored.

    Having 0 points from the public doesn't mean nobody vote for them, but that they didn't make it in the top 10 in any country.
    A song can have very few votes, but it it makes it in the top ten in one country, it'll have points.

    • @supermannnblablabla
      @supermannnblablabla 3 года назад +9

      If it has very few votes but still made it into a country’s top 10 televote, then everything else must have got VERY few votes. 🤣🤣 Please just stop trying to justify poor scores. We know it doesn’t literally mean 0 votes because that is virtually impossible with hundred of millions of viewers. Did you just realise this or something?

    • @Kernel15
      @Kernel15 3 года назад +58

      @@supermannnblablabla What they mean is that 11th in jury and 11th in televote gets nil points even though many may have voted for them, but 10th in televote and 25th in jury means they'll get more points anyway even though objectively speaking the first song was probably better.
      Or that if in televoting, 38 countries give you 11th place (no points) vs 1 country giving you 10th place (1 point) and the other 37 putting you down in last... but the second song will place higher because of that 1 point.
      Nothing to do with the total number of votes they received.

    • @supermannnblablabla
      @supermannnblablabla 3 года назад +5

      @@Kernel15 I know what they meant and how the point system works. But they said that a country could still be in the top 10 televote of a country with few actual votes, but either way, anything ranked below that must have got even fewer votes so it doesn’t justify getting 0 points by THEIR logic. Either way, there is obviously AT LEAST a few thousand votes for every contestant per country seeming as Eurovision is watched by over 200 million people (I think). I hope this makes sense lol.

    • @alftuvik3820
      @alftuvik3820 3 года назад +18

      @@supermannnblablabla Depends on the country and how big or small their population is, plus what usually happens in most shows with televotes is that the majority will vote for the same 1-3 songs, while the rest could potentially be very close, in smaller countries it's very likely that whoever gets 7 points might not have that many more votes than somebody who gets 0 points.

    • @Kernel15
      @Kernel15 3 года назад +1

      @@supermannnblablabla They're not saying that a song with few points will be in the top 10. They're using a hypothetical example to show that even if they have very few votes, the quirk of the system is that if they're in 10th or higher, they get points.

    Fallen angel is a very different song from Tix's usual style
    The only other song similar to that is one in Norwegian called "angel don't go" that he wrote for a young fan of his, Aurora, who died of cancer. She loved him so much that she had asked for him to be to her funeral, as she knew she would pass soon.
    And he went to her funeral, even if he had a concert on the same day.

    Here in Europe we were very surprised by the popular vote for Destiny (Malta), we were expecting much more ...
    If I may make a clarification the Eurovision Song Contenst is NOT a competition between countries (and their governments) but between "television broadcasters" that are associated with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) of which the CBC (as an associated television broadcaster) is also part. So, Canada could also compete if requested or invited

    I'm from the Netherlands and I think I understand why our entry got zero points from the public. It is because the song is 'fine'. The German entry described it best: "I don't feel hate". To be loved by some requires to be hated by others. Nobody hated any of the entries in the bottom 5, so none of these were in anyone's top 10. Songs need to stand out.

      If I can give my two cents from a non-dutch european perspective, I think Jeangu's song was really hurt by directly qualifying, because it seems to me that the song didn't get the publicity it needed. To me personally, it was definitely a grower, it sounded not so memorable the first time I heard it, but now, after listening to it for some time, I really really like it! Maybe the public just needed to be exposed to it a bit more

      @@teachertraveler1 I mean maybe I'm wrong, maybe I was just out of the loop idk, but I felt like Netherland's song was really flying under the radar until the grand final (maybe because they didn't need to qualify? I don't think we can compare italy's energy and performance with Jeangu, it was quiet easy to see why Italy was able to capture such a big part of the audience

      Teenage Dirtbag isn’t about his personal insecurity: he laments his lot in life, sure, but he’s not insecure in himself, and by the end of the song he’s got the girl and been fully vindicated in his identity.
      You can tell that it’s not about personal insecurity from the songwriter’s description in interviews: “so when I sing: 'I'm just a teenage dirtbag', I'm effectively saying: 'Yeah, fuck you if you don't like it. Just because I like AC/DC doesn't mean I'm a devil worshipper, and you're an idiot.' That's where it comes from." - that’s not insecure.

    Norway not only still vibes to "Mil etter Mil", the first song to ever get 0 points in the international final, but also made it's singer Jahn Teigen one of our biggest music icons, and treated his recent death as a national tragedy. I don't think we put too much weight on not doing well in the international final.
    Also with all the ESC2021 reactions going around, it would be interesting if Alena picked out some songs for other years as well. (This is my roundabout way to ask you to react to Iceland 2019. Because if we are talking about "step on me" we need to talk about Iceland 2019.)

    • @ahkkariq7406
      @ahkkariq7406 7 месяцев назад

      I couldn't agree more about Jahn Teigen and the fact that winning Eurovision is not that important to us. The most important thing is that we send off the artist we as people want to send, regardless of the person's chances of winning. It's more about us wanting to show Europe what WE like, and not what we think they will like. Norwegians wanted to share Tix with the whole world, and sent him to Eurovision - which was the right decision.
      I remember when we still had a jury in Norway, and they chose a different song than the people wanted - people got very angry with the system, almost a riot. If I remember correctly, the jury was abolished after that, so now it is the people who decide who will represent Norway. Of course, the organizers help to influence through the invitation of artists and order in the Norwegian semi-finals and final of the MGP, and that's fine.

    Lol I am Alena for every song just casually mouthing the words while showing the songs to my friends. Also my fav dessert is brownies, thank you for asking. ALSO ALSO, the problem with the voting system isn't that Britain, Spain and the Netherlands got 0 points from the public or the juries, they didn't get ENOUGH votes from the public to warrant points in the current point system. But historically, the hosting country does not get a lot of points, and most of the big five (except France and Italy) will also stay in the bottom ten. That's just the way it goes, sadly. Because Birth of a New Age is such a good song and totally a breath of fresh air for Eurovision for sure!
    I loved Tick Tock and was pretty sad it didn't make it through, but I like it as a guilty pleasure song anyway.
    Norway's song is sooo cute, it took me a couple of listens to actually love it, but I adore it now (especially because I am trash for really sad break-up songs).
    IF you guys are looking for songs from older Eurovision song contests, can I recommend "Is it true" from Iceland in 2009, "Together" from Ireland (Ryan O'Shaugnessy - there was a big controversy because of the act, so the contest wasn't shown in China because the EBU wouldn't allow them to sensor what happened on stage), and "I can" by Blue (because it is SO hilariously bad, it's sooo bad, please learn the dance and then sing the song as dramatically as they do). Lots of love!

When the song came out on the radio, it was one of the first times people in the Netherlands heard the sentence: yu no man broki, which can be misheard as: you are my broccoli. I misheard that too. It was even in the Dutch media, like.. people thought it was a song about broccoli. Such a big misunderstanding.
