    LIVIVO Mic Stand: fbit.co/9txN
Autism causes all kinds of difficulties in people living with autism, this can range from anxiety and depression to difficulty making friends.
Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder can find it difficult and hard sometimes to make friends. This is no exception for autism in adults or autism in children, it impacts them just the same.
In this video I am talking about 3 main ways that an individual with autism can make friends fast. It is simple and effective.
I have used these same strategies to make friends in all my friends circles. So I would advise anyone who wants to start making friends to follow these 3 tips.
Making friends can be difficult but knowing how to make friends is a good way to start overcoming the hard part.
So take note, stand up straight and get out there and start making friends. The benefit from having friends is social interaction and the less likely you are to feel lonely.
Loneliness is a big issue for people on the spectrum so making friends is a great way to stop feeling lonely.

Making friends isn’t that hard for me. Keeping friends is hard. I meet people all the time and become friends, but once I am not seeing them all the time I lose touch.

That's the struggle I have. I never find out why I lose friendships, I only have theories. But a pattern I've noticed is that people seem interested and entertained by the "quirks" that come from autistic traits... and a few months later, when they start realizing it's NOT a fun bit, it's just how I am, they get annoyed and start distancing themselves.

For me it feels almost like an "object permanence" thing, like if they're not in my line of sight they don't really exist. I'm terrible at remembering or even thinking to call or message most people with any regularity.

Personally, my difficulty with establishing friendships does not revolve around an inability or otherwise limited ability to read others, or to understand what's deemed appropriate or inappropriate. My problem is that I am not a very talkative person, and am somehow submerged into my own world so to speak. Even if I do want to strike up a conversation, the hyperfocus on all the possible ways it could end awkwardly just filters all the things I could potentially talk about out of my mind, and deters me from making an effort. It's getti

Meditation worked wonders for me to blend out all these distracting thoughts and concentrate on the present moment, i.e. the conversation. Also has a lot of other great benefits! The counterpart to it is that you start to annoy all the people around you by telling them they should start to meditate :D

Some tips for friendship in general:
-Friendships have to build up slowly, you have to create a lot of good memories with someone and create a deeper connection with someone in order to become best friends for example.
-You need multiple friends, not just one best friend. People can get really annoyed if you claim them, so don't do that. Show them you want to be friends, but let them be free to do other things as well (this was a really big problem for me when I was younger).
-Be aware that there are people who can take advantage of you. Don't let them do that, because those people are not real friends. For people with autism it can be difficult to seperate friends and enemies. For example: if someone only wants to meet with you when he has no other option, that person is not a real friend. If someone only wants to spend time with you because you have something they like such as video games or money, that person is not a good friend.
-If you have a friend that likes you and your weirdness and does not make fun of you, you have found a real good friend.
Now some tips for making new friends:
-If you already have a friend, you can use them to meet new people! If you are good friends, you probably will like their friends as well because they will have similar interests.
-If you are afraid of talking to people on your own, go to a social place with someone that is good at social things. Look at how they do it and cling on to the conversations that the person you're with is having with others. This really helped me getting more friends!
-Do not just talk all the time, and not just about your own interests. Listen to what someone is telling you, and then ask them a question related to that topic. People don't like it when you don't say anything at all, but they also don't like it when you are speaking all the time. Learn to find that balance.
-Show them good body language. Make eyecontact regulary (I know this is difficult, but you can find a balance with this. For example: I make eyecontact when I want to show someone that I am listening to what they are saying, but when I answer I look away because then I can think better) and stand "open" to someone. Use your hands when you talk, all those kinds of things.
-Remember the things that someone tells you and sometimes bring them up again the next time you see that person. This helped me getting tons of friends! For example: When you talk to someone at school and that person tells you that he/she is going to an amusement park that weekend and after the weekend you see him/her again, ask him/her of he/she had a good time at the amusement park and have a conversation about it. People really appreciate it if you remember those type of things and they really like it when people are interested in them. And it's also great because you will have something to talk about!
I hope this helps someone, it helped me for sure. These are things I used to struggle with, but found out through trial and error. Don't be afraid to fail, there are tons of people in the world. If someone doesn't like you, that's fine. You can actually learn social skills by observing others and trying it yourself. Just make sure you don't play someone else. People will like you for who you are, they just need a little bit of guidance when it comes to becoming friends.

About having multiple friends and not being so invested in one is so true. Took me way too long to realize that, I did realize that I was being quite annoying, but not truly why I was, so it made me think that I just needed to try more, but property, which just made it worse lol

I prefer texting over real life communication. They can take their time reading what I said, and there is no "interrupting". I can re-read what they said in Text, unlike real life where I have to deeply concentrate for every instant second they say something, and I cant hear it again because most people hate repeating. I have a hard time remembering spoken word! Text communication is better for me because there is no eye contact, no tones, no body language, I can re-read, look over my own words before I send it, and it lets me leave at any time I feel agitated for any reason.

I am watching from Northern Ireland. I am 30 and was diagnosed with autism last month, although I was told I might have dyspraxia but was never officially diagnosed. I never thought about it much before as I was just used to things but getting diagnosed has started to make me understand better with some of the things I do and why.
I actually didn't find it hard making friends growing up as I made quite a few friends in school , but it was keeping them I found harder as often when I tried to communicate with someone, I'd know what to say sometimes but couldn't get myself to actually say it (I called it a block, like a physical barrier was stopping me) and I ended up losing friends as we'd drift apart. I think growing up in an area with few kids around, who didn't stay there more than a year or two, wasn't that helpful either. I have learned to deal with it over the years and I do find it easier communicating with people now than I used to.
The hardest thing for me making new friends in person now is that I can't yet drive. I am learning to drive at the moment and I getting better at it. I could get public transport to places and sometimes have to, but I often I find vehicle and house chimney and other fumes and smells, those overpower my sensis and make me feel sick and any events that are going on that are to do with things I am interested in are often too far away for me to get to. Any group I have joined in the past, most of the people in it are usually either a lot older than I am or younger and although I haven't really had problems with that much, I'd rather meet some people around my age.
The one good thing with getting diagnosed and explaining my situation to the people I went to see about my diagnosis is that they are trying to help me find groups I can join and ways I can get out and about so just waiting to hear back from them about it, although one of them said she'd found a music group I might be interested to join since I love making music and playing musical instruments so waiting to hear more about it.

Yeah I guess you’re right. As the mother of a child on the spectrum who is 12 going on 13, I almost always tell people about it. Guess my momma instinct is to protect him from being hurt (mentally) and to make sure others aren’t either. 🤷‍♀️ You being an adult and more self aware can choose from each situation.

      @jerkfudgewater147 5 лет назад +7

Gabriella Rosenfeld i don’t think you should be outing a teenager, if people cannot tell they don’t need to know unless a problem develops (ie. Girlfriend crying about why is he so cold) but unless your kid is way down the spectrum they need to have the autonomy to make that choice for themself. Ask yourself this “if my son was gay, would i tell this person? How would that help my son?”

    • @gabriellarosenfeld3545
      @gabriellarosenfeld3545 5 лет назад

jerk fudgewater Hi, I get what you mean but being that it is not visible to people that he is on the spectrum and he up and swears at a person or other rude behavior (has happened) I ‘d rather let them know when possible. I guess I ‘d rather not hide it and people will ask questions, which I see as positive. Being gay doesn’t effect social behavior (normally ), so no I would not out a gay person.

    • @jerkfudgewater147
      @jerkfudgewater147 5 лет назад

Gabriella Rosenfeld ok so re-read what i said then see if that covers everything you just said.
      Swearing at people = problem
People may react poorly and use what makes your son different against him even though it doesn’t matter or warrant hostility = gay
You’re outing your son will stunt his growth socially and eventually lead him to resent you for it. BUT you could always ignore me and hurt your son, it’s up to you, you’re the parent

So I "accidentally" fell into a Fandom on Twitter, and my days are so much brighter. I like every post, I love the fanarts, jokes everything. It's just wonderful to be there.

Have you ever heard of the Meetup app? Meetup is an app where you can join or create groups related to a particular interest and then schedule events so you can meet up with others who share that interest. I created a plan-based dining out group which is awesome and I’ve enjoyed meeting and eating out with other like-minded plant-eaters! I also joined a few outdoor adventure groups where I’ve gone camping and hiking with other outdoor/nature enthusiasts. Apps like Meetup are a great way to find and meet like-minded people who share common interests.

Thanks for this video! Good suggestions. The thing I feel I struggle with is getting to know people beyond your shared interest, though... Like, it gets kind of old when your conversation is only confined to your common interest with someone, and I don't always know how to breach that... Besides that, it seems that people consider other people friends when they know personal stuff about each-other. I guess you just have to ask them personal questions at some point... Do you have any tips on this aspect of making friends, Dan?

Very interesting thoughts. However it is one thing to have certain interests, but another altogether to be able to discuss those interests in a social context. There are numerous times when I was talking to group of people around a subject I knew about, however, I couldn't really join in, as I couldn't relate my knowledge to the context of the conversation. Examples would include conversations around politics - and I'm not talking about arguments or taking sides here. It was coming from a different angle so to speak, than the way I learnt about things. I may be able to recite some facts textbook style, but somehow the conversation can come from a different starting point.

Really like your channel, It's helping me learn more about myself and my son. My son was diagnosed with ADHD, and mild Aspergers when he was 5, he is 8 now. Learning more about it in the past few years, I strongly believe I also have Aspergers even though I have never been officially diagnosed.
I myself have used the methods you talked about in this video. I actually met my Wife over online communication first as well.
I was wondering if there were any ways you know of to help a child with Aspergers make friends. My son is a lot like me and tends to keep to himself, and his family. I thought about maybe having him get involved in a local stem club that uses Legos. He loves Lego's, Minecraft, Transformers, and Math.
Thanks for your response and your channel.

For me I try to find out what topics other people like, and if it overlaps with something I’m interested in I can be very sociable. This is everything from certain comic book characters, certain video game lore, dogs, animals, ecosystems, mechanics of engines, American football, basketball, MMA, and the history related to the development of those sports, historical events, etc.
when it comes to topics of corruption and libertarianism, I’ve learned to use a sort of Socratic method and a way of suggesting where to look into the topics on the internet to verify things themselves. I used to be quite evangelical and have a ‘tell them how it is’ mindset, but since I changed into this more Socratic type of communication I have had large degrees of success being persuasive
I can make connections and be quite sociable despite struggling with it when I was younger, and I actually think it is because of how I’ve learned to use the Asperger’s traits
And with a little guidence and research I’ve actually found that I can be better than the average person with understanding body language and nonverbal ques because of how analytical my mind is, the difference is that it’s just not intuitive. I’ve also found that it can be mentally stimulating rather than draining like it is for many people with Asperger’s, because I enjoy making analysis

Hey Dan! Awesome video! 😊 Anyways I was wondering if you could give me some kind of advice that's on the topic of friendships. I never really been an outgoing person due to Asperger's and everything. I've been dealing with a lot lately. Including trying to figure out to do with someone who was a very close friend of mine. My friend has been doing lots of bad stuff and has a negative attitude. And I don't know what to do anymore. I want to talk about it with this friend but I find it super hard. And if this friend continues (which they have continued after being asked before not to do stuff that makes others uncomfortable) I might just have to end the friendship. And I really don't know how. Or even what to do. If you have any advice I would sure love to hear it.

I am not autistic, I have ADHD and OCD. But I related about making friends tips because that's the way I make friends and how I feel more comfortable to talk to people, writting, without call, video or the need to meet in person. When I find people with same interest or having a hard time with the same feelings I've felt before I like to chat a lot. But even in online conversation there are some people who needs that I reply immediately and say the formal stuffs like goodnight and kisses and see you tomorrow that makes me feel uncomfortable having to say back those things. They make me feel the same way as if I was in person and maybe worse because if they say that they will talk to me tomorrow they really will and I will have to respond them because they will be expecting me to @.@ but those people drains out my energy and I need to be far from them from some while till I have energy to talk to them again.
As kid I realized I used to use stickers or share candies with others kids to make friends and now I frequently start a conversation noticing something about the people that I like, for example fashion clothes or geek accessories.

Brand new. Still in the box. I Was willing to give it to them free. After a half dozen attempts to say something I gave up. People ignore me. It's really not worth the effort trying.

@Anne-Lou I no longer do that because nobody listens and if they do, I'm berated for making excuses. I have no allies or advocates. I often feel I should just shut up. Who is the person in this video? I'm sorry I forget names. But I wish I had the speaking skills that he has.

@Anne-Lou that matters little to me since I don't speak body language. Not only can I not read others, but many think they can read me and do it wrong. I get blamed for this.
