With time the handle or shaft of your Diverter Valve might break or you may want to change out an older standard Valve Assembly for a Never Lube Valve Assembly. Also your Diverter Valve may be tightly integrated in your piping system to the point where you would have to replace multiple valves to replace a bad one. Fortunately most damaged valves can be repaired by replacing the valve assembly inside the Valve as an easier alternative to cutting out the whole valve. This guide shows you how to replace the Diverter Valve Assembly in a Diverter Valve.

    1. Order diverter valve parts.
    2. Turn off power.
    3. Relieve system pressure.
    4. Remember valve setting. (Note operational position of the handle.)
    5. Remove handle lock knob.
    6. Note position of inlet label.
    7. Remove cover screws.
    8. Pry off valve cover.
    9. Note position of diverter paddle.
    10. Push out diverter.
    11. Remove cover O-ring.
    12. Clean valve cover.
    13. Slide O-rings on new diverter. (And replace cover O-ring. Lubricate all O-rings. Slide diverter shaft into cover.)
    14. Rotate diverter to match old position (Position as noted in step 9).
    15. Insert assembly into housing. (Position as noted in step 6)
    16. Replace cover screws.
    17. Place handle on valve shaft (Position as noted in step 4).

Thank you very much for this video. I replaced the o-rings and lubed them and that stopped the leak. I had to use a very sharp pocket knife to be able to separate the valve cover from the valve because the chisel or flat head screw driver didn't work.

Used this info to replace o-rings on a leaking diverter valve. Thanks. You saved me a bunch of money.

Thanks, Great Video, one recommendation. When replacing the cover screws into the plastic housing. Push lightly while turning them counter clockwise till you feel a click. Then tighten the screws. This way you will not start a new set of treads which can lead to them stripping out. Also a lot easier to install the screws in the old threads than making new ones.

Hooray! Someone who knows what they're talking about. I've been a pool guy for 15 years and lost count of how many screws have been stripped out by a previous cowboy just ramming the screws up with a cordless drill. Complete morons. If after you've pushed lightly, and the screw has dropped, you can't start turning the screw by hand, you do not have the screw going into its original thread.

Great advice. I figured out most of this on my own, but skipped the step of noting the original position of the cover - and there's no easy way with my pool to tell which incoming pipe is the inlet. So had to do the re-install twice. Suggest writing "inlet" on the appropriate pipe to avoid this problem.

How did you recognize the inlet pipe?

Do NOT use a screwdriver or anything to pry apart, you will create a notch in the plastic housing since it is soft, this could create a leak. instead, re attach the handle and then carefully/slowly wiggle it off

I do this once/ year for my solar diverter valve since it goes back and forth all year long. They leak like clockwork ever 12 months. I just replace the orings and there you go.

Getting a leak thru my waterfall. I suspect its coming from the valve key not sealing off the waterfall completely. What is the solution? Do i just buy the valve key or do i need to buy Orings as well?

If you have a Pentair valve - Pentair exploded diagram of their valve on their web site shows a small spacer that goes between the 2 small o-rings that go onto the shaft. I just did mine and sure enough, there is a spacer.

My pump stopped working and pool store told metro move diverter to where it doesn't go. So I got it there and now I can't get it back to normal. It won't turn. Should I get plyers and force the handle? Or take the thing apart? I'm new and nothing wrong with diverter valve. Was trying to get into impellor and check debris.

What do you mean but turning it where it doesn't go? Did you rotate the valve's cover?

Opened my diverter up to clean out a blockage (leaves) and my pump's pressure was instantly restored! Then it stopped working properly again quickly after. Now the lost pressure issue is widespread, affecting main drain as well (completely bypassing the earlier blocked pipes). Any chance I could get a tip of what to check next?

Minor mistake in the voice over. "Step 14: Rotate Diverter to Match Old Position.". He says "Rotate the valve assembly to match the position in step 6." He should have said "Match the position of the diverter paddle from step 9."
