Many people think Zappa reassembled the Monterey Pop guitar and used it in the early 70's, but the guitar he got from Hendrix was a different one altogether.
You should totally do a series of these, so many famous guitars out there. You could talk about Frampton's Les Paul that was stolen and then recovered miraculously decades later, the Jag-Stang, Rick Nielsen's checkerboard Hamer Standard that 3M did the graphics on, or his 5-neck guitar, or any Rick Nielsen guitar, lol, Phil Collen's Dracula Jackson done by Dan Lawrence, Les Claypool's first Carl Thompson bass, Rory Gallagher's famous Strat that was the first Fender Strat ever to make it to England, the Randy Rhoads polka dot V, pretty much any of SRV's guitars, I could keep going.
Frampton's Les Paul wasn't stolen...that was Harrison's...Frampton's was lost when a cargo plane crashed in Venezuela....but yeah there are soo many guitar stories..
Dweezil found the body and bridge in a closet, he asked Frank if it was Jimi's and Frank said yes do you want it? So Dweezil got some pickups and a left handed neck and used it like that for a long time then more recently Dweezil has had the guitar restored to the spec that Frank had it in the 70s.
Every electric guitar will have a story, given enough time. 100 years from now, someone will be looking at YOUR electric guitar and wonder who owned it, where it traveled to and what songs were played on it.
To all those complaining that *this* guitar or *that* guitar wasn't listed: The title is "The Stories Behind 7 Famous Guitars". Not the best, most famous or greatest 7. Just 7 stories. Yeah....Knopfler's Strat could be there, Page's LP, SRV's Number One, Billy Gibbons' Pearly Gates, Billy Malcom's Gretsch, Armstrong's Blue, Dimebag, Springsteen's Tele, Bo Diddley, Randy Rhoads, Angus Young.....blah blah blah. You're all right. Stories exist for all those instruments. This guy told 7 stories he chose. We could all do the same.

I can't imagine what it would fetch at auction. He said it's uninsurable, which tells me he talked to an insurance company, and they probably laughed at him. He's got a couple reproductions, and one of them is absolutely beautiful. I think he only uses it for "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". It's got an F-hole, no tremolo, and has like a marbled finished.
Brain May couldn’t afford a Gibson or strat at the time before he was famous. So him n His dad said they could built a guitar just like the other ones. Built not bought I think that’s pretty amazing
RED. SPECIAL. It's funny that Brian's world famous, one-and-only guitar was made by him and his father, because it took a really long time for his dad to accept that Brian was a musician first and a scientist second. He had always thought Brian was throwing his life away until he brought his parents over to New York to see Queen at Madison Square Garden.
Yeah, that was a great story. I saw an interview where Brian told that story, and his his dad told him "I get it now", after the show. He teared up talking about it. You can tell that he loved his dad, and having his dad accept him for what he was meant everything to him.
@@Bibiana862 I'm talking about the irony of his father helping him build the instrument to his fame, when he didn't approve of Brian being a musician for a long time.
Brian May's red special is indeed the most 'special' and coolest guitar for me I was expecting Billie Joe's Blue. For 30 years, that guitar is legendary
Thing that is interesting about Brian May's Red Special, is it was built in 1963. Many innovative ideas for the time. First, a great whammy bar that went up in pitch and went to a perfect octave. Also stayed in tune. the strings are in alignment with the locking tuners on the headstock. 25 fretted guitar. Unheard of in the early 60's. With a ghost fret at the nut. For a sitar, vocalize effect. Chambered solid Mahogany body built to sustain and harmonically feedback in tune. I have a Burns Brian May. I use it for everything but, ironically Queen Music. Of course also Uli Jon Roth's Sky Guitar. Extremely innovative and amazing as well. Not store bought and made famous by the Rockstar user, Made by a visionary, who made a guitar that sounded like the amazing sound in their head. Enjoyed your video greatly. Keep up the good work. Peace.
When B.B. King related the story himself, he always pointed out that he named his guitars Lucille to remind him how stupid he had been to risk his life to fetch that guitar from the burning venue, and not because he treasured it.
Nathan Nguyen no he had a different Strat and he saw that guitar in a shop and traded even up. That guitar had the fretboard replaced so many times that the neck was going to need replacing.
He 'stole' Jimmy's tele when Jimmy was on tour and left it behind. Although Jimmy didn't seem to mind. Number One was a guitar that SRV bought from a shop. Because it looked like hell (sunburst Fender's of that era generally flake) and the pickups had been messed with the shop owner thought it was crap and gave SRV a good deal.
May used independently-wired pickups with individual phase-locking switches. Hard to duplicate on something that's pre-wired for a certain sound. Oh, and a Vox AC30 amp. though my dad got one of those and neither of us sounds like Brian May through it. Good sound crunchiness, though. There's a 40 minute video where Brian does nothing but talk about and demonstrate his musical journey and that of the Red Special here, if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/TFssjJKqSQY/видео.html He gets into some really interesting stuff with self-harmonization, feedback, and tambour production, and it's really worthwhile to see. Besides, he just has such a soothing voice...

Best guitar story I've read recently is John Fogerty's ACME Rickenbacker, which he bought early 60s, modded, used in all records with CCR, and when his life turned to shit and he was robbed out of his own band, sold the guitar. He went out and tried to buy back the guitar couple of times but people were asking ridiculous amount of money for it, so he gave up. Now he just recently reposessed his life's guitar after more than 40 years, when his wife bought the instrument from a guitar dealer and surprised him with last christmas.
I'd take Brian May's Red Special over all the others. That's a real gem! It's featured in almost every single Queen song. And he still uses it today, decades later.

Willie Nelson has a person on staff, traveling with him and the band, just to take care of Trigger. That hole comes from playing an acoustic guitar with a pick, without a pick guard. (The guitar tech keeps repairing it, but because of the way Willie plays, it keeps coming back.) For all its idiosyncracies,Trigger is a big part of Willie's unique sound and style.

And now I will use this as not only studio but live as well!
What I find very ironic is, that Slash´s AFD Les Paul was a copy of a Gibson Les Paul and that Gibson made a REPLICA OF THE COPY almost 30 years later.

Bo Diddley's square guitar.
ArcherPiperII Always wanted a Didley Bo!
What about jimmy page's dragon telecaster?
always wondered what happened to that tele
the telecaster was used in most album recordings, he used the les paul live due to its more loud noise
Douglas Taylor some chick painted over it while he was touring with Zepp but I think he still has the neck
or his double neck
@@QueenFan12 or his les paul
How about the story of Jimmy Page buying that Magic Les Paul from Joe Walsh
I thought Joe gave it to Jimmy as a gift for him.
Why don't you tell the story of Rory Gallagher's Strat, the first one in Ireland? There's a lot of history there.
oldfartatplay1320 Why don’t you make your own video?
The guitar that really SHOULD have been on this list is Waylon Jennings Telecaster.
Hell yes!
god damn yeah most legendary tele ever take a Tele and put black and white leather on it
Who?
I feel like dimes dean from hell would have been cool
Hey there. I just wanted to say thank you for reigniting my love for music, more specifically, my poor neglected guitar. I stumbled across your channel and went out to buy new strings immediately and have been playing daily since. I had forgotten how much I loved making music and doing so has really helped me through some rough times recently so thank you. Can't wait for my kickass samurai tshirt to show up. I shall rock it proudly sir.
I'm a simple man, I saw frankenstrat so I clicked
ScadoodleMyNoodle same
My favorite famous axe is James Hetfield's 'Eet Fuk' white Gibson Explorer. That thing is the stuff of thrash legend.
It's in once a year or so for repair and this uber chill dude takes great care of it! ruclips.net/video/uhQuJTc5yFY/видео.html
Is that guitar EVER in tune when Willie's playing it? lol
Brian's guitar built by recycling parts.
My guitar's name is Liza after Liza Minelli who played Lucille 2 on Arrested Development because BB King was why I wanted a 335 so I felt it was like Lucille 2
Isaac Ord haha that's really clever
Thanks man
I wanted one because of the crossroads solo.
Isaac Ord that sir is one sensational naming story. genius. hahaha
Brent Airey, lol thanks :)
I played one of John Frusciante's Post-fire sold guitars. It was amazing.
Peter Framptons Black les paul. Very cool story.
WormdrivE66 Best most unbelievable story. It's amazing how the world works.
Just a thought. You posted a shot of Brian May and had it marked "Queen live at Wembley Stadium 1987". Acually, Queens last live performance was at Knebworth on 9 August 1986.
Wrong.
i watched this hoping to see jack whites red airline!!
3:54 for you queen fans you’re welcome c;
Did he just say ‘Red siesta strat’?!?!
It’s Fiesta Red...
(Named after a party, not an afternoon nap)
4:00 That was 1986. Good video anyways.
frusciante's '62 strat❤
Also the famous "Dean From Hell" from Dimebag Darrell is one of the most iconic heavy metal guitars in history. I think that guitar broke on the head in the middle of a concert, and Dime just kept playing like a god.
It's crazy how Eddie just throws around the Frankenstrat with no case or nothing. that would probably make alot of people cringe! but he's right a guitar is just a tool
Yaaaaaas the red special yaaaas
he looks like Genghis Khan!
Genghis Khan was described by a Persian chronicler as having red hair and green eyes!
Khal drogo
All those cigarette burns on the headstock of Eddie's guitar! LOL! Gotta love it!
EET FUK.... main Hetfield's Guitar during ...And Justice For All tour
The Peter Green's Les Paul guitar had a good one history...
Chris de la Cruz yess I was referring to this also...
It had a big history... It could be a full video talking about that 😁😁
Tomás Criado Kirk Hammett owns that guitar now. The history keeps on going.
$2 MILLION dollars worth of history now that Kirk Hammett bought it for that sum.
Kurdt Cobains Jaguar, apparently he got it from a hock shop pre-customized :)
4:01 I don't wanna be this guy... But Wembley wasn't in 1987!!!
Sebastian Villarroel ...and Brian wasn’t even playing the original RS in the clip !! 😆 But, who cares?
Live Aid was '86... A full set with only Queen on the billing was in '87. Right and wrong.
How could you forget Randy Rhoads and Jackson! The legacy behind those is huge!
David Gilmour's strat with serial number 0001? Basically first strat ever sold.
There is no truth to that. The customer who bought it paid to have a unique serial number on it. Fender Strat numbers are non-sequential.
What about Zakk Wydle's bulls eye Les Paul?
Ron Russomanno his friend was panting it, he said horizontal and his friend put a circle pattern on it
please don't go there...
I was expecting that too! It should have been on the list seeing how the famous Bullseye paint job design was a mistake which should have made this list
@@Smokinpython Didn't it get stolen at some point only for him to buy it back at an auction?
@@greengoku10 close it was actually bought at a pawn shop buy a guy for like $200 and he took the pickups out and noticed it said ZW which was Zakk Wylde signature Odin Grail that's he lost and so he contacted management and was able to give it back toZackk and in return Zack gave him a signature zw lp for returning it to him
What about Woody Guthrie's guitar? "This Machine Kills Fascists"?
Luke Hambone ANTIFA burned it during a protest somewhere..
David Lee Roth why? Antifa would worship it
Fuck Antifa
Woody Guthrie was a communist piece of shit.
Guthrie rips
Yesss brian red special is on hear and it makes me so happy that everyone in the comments is talking about mostly brian and his red special
My guitar which is a Yamaha SE 350h that I bought from a local guitar store called "krazy Kat's"(aka Saint Mary's Street music) and this guitar was busted up, had three strings on it, and from the looks of it, its a relic!
So anyway I traded my busted neck acoustic for it for a mere $40 and brought the electric home and it has like an 80's view (hence the name "Valen") due to its Floyd rose and locking nut...
Little did I know that I was holding a piece of history!
So I look at the serial number (lz05020) and looked it up and...
Its production number is 20...
And it was made in December 5 1985!
And now I will use this as not only studio but live as well!
What I find very ironic is, that Slash´s AFD Les Paul was a copy of a Gibson Les Paul and that Gibson made a REPLICA OF THE COPY almost 30 years later.
AND that if you can track down an "original" Kris Derrig Les Paul that he made it's worth more than an new Les Paul, the last one I saw sold went for $50,000!!
Sure
