I have "played" Steve Vai's guitar.. or he was on stage, I was in the crowd, and he held the guitar over the audience so a few of us could reach it.. I managed to strum the neck..... still tho.. :)
Once I went to the music store, they had extra price for some yamaha bass, that's how I got my battle axe, then I covered it with rock and astrophysics stickers and put it to the service to make it perfect. They altered a neck a bit, change some frets and did some magic, so after that every band I've been in asked if there is some fuzz/overdrive/chorus hidden inside for it has unique sound. It ain't legendary yet but man, just give me 10 more years ;)
well, I removed the B and E strings of my acoustic, realigned the strings, and added a drop d string at the top and got rid of the lower machinehead. Give me 20 yrs, it'll be known
I'm almost offended you haven't done any of David Gilmour's guitars yet! Such as the Black Strat, and the #0001 Strat. Other ideas are Slashs' Appetite For Destruction Les Paul, Robbie Robertson's Last Waltz Strat (very underated guitar player from a great and underrated band), Eric Clapton's Blackie Strat, Syd Barret's Mirror Esquire, George Harrison's Lucy, John Lennon's Epihphone Casino, the list goes on!
Slash’s “Appetite for Destruction” (the Kris Derrig replica) is crazily important to feature, as a replica/clone was essentially ‘the’ guitar that saved a then-failing Gibson amidst the hair metal era.
I dunno maybe: Randy Rhoads' first Jackson V, Ace Frehaly's Les Paul with the smoking fake pick-up, Paul Stanley's mirrored Iceman, Gene Simmons' ax bass, Zakk Wylde's target rings Gibson Les Paul, Hetfield's EET FUK explorer?
Gene Siimmons"s Axe Bass Or Paul McCarthy's Hofner Bass? I mean since you did put a bass in the list, I'd figure maybe basses could be of the next installment lol
I love the fact that compared to other RUclips Guitarists, you also bring this side knowledge which makes your clips nice to watch. Plus, you also appreciate a song/artist/instrument more if you know its story.
I love these videos! If you do a fourth one, you should include George Harrison’s Rocky Strat or Syd Barrett’s ‘62 Esquire with the reflective chrome paint job and plastic mirrors
Technically if you are the second outright buyer. Your name is added to the deeds of a house but the original owner if they bought it remains there. Peter Green actually listened to Gary Moore's album using the Les Paul and declared the album was awful.
The fact that a Hammet owns that Les Paul breaks my heart. That poor thing is going to die a slow horrible death having him play it. And it wasn't a factory mistake that made the guitar out of phase it was a repair where the neck pickup magnet was put in backwards and pickup installed backwards. The pickup is physically out of phase not electrically.
You should do JJ Cales Harmony!! A total Frankenstein, his studio work with that old thing was outstanding. The tones and sheer variety of sounds and styles he created with that thing is still influencing players today!!
And an Aussie made the copy Brian uses as a backup, you can tell which is the copy because it has no damage/wear marks on the neck pickup. It was such a good copy that Brian hired him as the head builder at BMG Brian May guitars!
Johnny Greenwoods Tele, Jack White's axe, Matt Bellamy's Mattocasters, John Petrucci's new freaking NASA Computerish guitar Also, 0 dislikes, 600 likes! Wow!
Great video! I really enjoy this series of videos that you’re doing. I love the entire history of the instrument, and these have all been very informative. In the next video, maybe cover Rick Nielsen’s Hamer double-neck, Randy Rhoads’ Jackson Concord, Slash’s ‘58 Les Paul that they just recently discovered was one of the very first “Burst” guitars? (I think it’s a ‘58, anyway.) Great video!
Kurt Cobain's Left-handed baby blue Jagstang Ian Curtis' Vox Phantom James Hetfield's White Explorer Brian Jones' Teardrop Vox Lemmy's Rickenbacker Bass Great video!
In 1961 the country/bluegrass band Betty Amos, Judy Lee and Jean (now in the country music hall of fame) were in a plane crash in Alaska on their way to a USO show. Amazingly, they all survived (almost crashed flying back to the southern 48). About a month after the crash Eskimos found Judy Lee Schreiber's 1958 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman and sent it back to her. She did nothing to restore it and immediately started playing it again. A few months ago she asked me to build her a replacement that she can tote around and sent me some pictures of the guitar as it is now. She still uses it to play local venues around Nashville! The story of the crash is documented and is one heck of a story! She used to take a soldering iron with her on the road to rewire or fix pots, etc. She was friends with Chet Atkins and herJudy Lee personally played her guitars on a number of occasions. Honestly, I don't know how I can possibly come close to building a guitar to rival something like this, but I am humbled and honored to get the opportunity!
No, Lucille was B.B. King's guitar, Lucy was a ruby red Les Paul that Eric Clapton had gifted George Harrison in exchange for his wife. I think you can hear it on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something."
I don’t have an original Moderne...but I saw the Sasquatch playing one near a crossroads...under a cherry burst moon...he was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein True story...
Gene Simmons axe bro! I got to meet the guy who made it since he lived in my home town, he's a real guitar hot rodder. It will also make Delaware look better lol
Brad Nowell from Sublime had a cool Dan McDonald custom towards the end of his life. Kind of a strat/Ibanez hybrid with a G&L neck The brown one. His bass player also had a green bass built by him.
I love this video series, it's good to watch. I would like to see you cover Don Felder's Gibson EDS-1275 double neck, used in the live performances of Hotel California. I think it's interesting because it's modded and actually has two jacks so it runs through two different amps.
Michael hamptons 'fat strat' 1973/74. A 17 year old Michael hampton (less known, i know) played maggot brain note-for-note, at a party that george clinton was at. It blew him away, and with the recent incarceration of eddie hazel, had mike join funkadelic as the new lead guitarist. He bought mike a strat, mike had a reverse headstock neck added to it, had the single coils replaced with humbuckers, and decorated with rhinestones. This may have been one of the first 'fat strats', and was used in many of pfunks live performances and recordings. Mike is an extremely underrated guitarist. I doubt he'd make any of these lists, but he is up there with the greats. Eddie hazel, as well, except itd be impossible to find any detailed information about his guitars to make a list.
Wow wow Wow! Hold up, so Rob helped the family get Jaco's bass back? That dude just keeps gettin cooler every time I hear about him! On top of being a darn good bassist🤘🤙
For the next one can you include some basses? I'd love to see Cliff Burton's Rickenbacker 4001 and one of Les Claypool's Carl Thompson basses that he used in the early days of Primus, I've always wanted to know how he became associated with them
I used to have a beautiful Ibanez Jem with a root beer finish. It played like a dream. Sold it during tough times, and by then, I was a Gibson-holic. Wish I still had it in my arsenal. It was luscious.
Here's a few more: George Harrison's 2 Rickenbacker 360/12's. Ace Frehley's light up and smoking Les Pauls. John Fogerty's "ACME". George Harrison/Eric Clapton's "Lucy". The VOX Tear Drop. The Rickenbacker Convertible and Light Show.
Pretty sure Greeny's guitar OOP sound was a magnet reversal during fiddling, not a factory error. There are several variants of the story from Greeny, but all of them involve accidental rewiring misadventures.
Most people now accept that the bass Jaco used a butterknife to rip the frets out of at the breakfast table in a motel while on tour with Wayne Cochran was a 70s jazz bass that he had before he acquired the Bass of Doom. Somewhere along the way the story of him doing that, which is corroborated by most of the other members of Cochren's CC Riders at the time, got transferred to the legendary Bass of Doom. Apparently Jaco was literally pulling the frets out with a knife and filling the gaps with liquid wood he'd borrowed from the janitor at breakfast. Cochran was furious as Jaco had only one bass and they had a lunchtime show. After the second song of the lunchtime show Cochren walked over to Jaco on stage with a huge grin and big thumbs up as he could tell not only was Jaco hitting ever note perfectly the fretless sound merged with the horns so much better and made the whole group sound more cohesive. Exactly what Jaco and said would happen.
There is a strat that Dave Murray from Iron Maiden played for about 20 years between 1970 and 1990, and it was owned by legendary guitarist of band Free, Paul Kossoff. It's an interesting story, you can check it out.
Hey there, Vai just named his pickups after the Harley engines. "At the same time, I was also working with DiMarzio designing a new pickup. There were four that we experimented with and each was named after a Harley Davidson engine style. They were the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead and Evolution. The one I liked the most was the Evolution, so DiMarzio put them into production and they are still available." www.vai.com/minisites/EVO/history_frameset.html
Of all my guitars, my replica of the Peter Green LP Lemondrop (by Vintage) remains my all-time 'go-to' guitar. I bought it originally because of that out of phase pick-up tone but two or three gigs later, I knew I found 'The One'.
Clapton’s “Blackie” Strat. Bought out a pawnshop’s supply of strats and took out all his favorite pieces from the ones he bought and built blackie out of the parts.
Gibson's model "modern" looks much like a polish guitar Defil Kosmos. In early 1980 it was very popular in this country among punk and rock bands. 20 years later you may still find them for about 10$ on some sort of flea market :)
Peter Frampton's Les Paul. Stolen, then, survived a plane crash with heat damage but managed to finally be reunited with Frampton some 20 years later or something.
How about THE most Iconic Rock n Roll guitar of all of them - the Gibson used by Chuck Berry when he recorded Maybelline? The year was 1955, Elvis hadn't made it "big" yet, that would come in 1956 with the release of his first RCA Album and Heartbreak Hotel. A song hit the radio waves that was unlike anything else, "Maybelline" ! I am a huge Elvis fan but even I admit that it was Chuck Berry who is why we have the great guitar gods we do have. The Elvis version of Rock n Roll lasted only a few short years, but Chuck Berry's version is still going on even now, so to see that guitar or even a video discussing it would be great!
While having dinner with Denny Freeman in 2004 at my home while he was on tour with Dylan. He told me about buying Lenny for Stevie Ray Vaughn. He said he never got paid for it, and also that SRV owed him rent when he died..... I wonder whatever happened to Freeman's guitars when he died two years ago..... He sent me pictures of all of them.
I have "played" Steve Vai's guitar.. or he was on stage, I was in the crowd, and he held the guitar over the audience so a few of us could reach it.. I managed to strum the neck..... still tho.. :)

You’ve been blessed
That’s so f*cking cool

Robert Trujillo is probably one of the nicest guys in rock, not to mention a sick bassist.
Dave Grohl and Brian May are also nice guys.

Definitely George Harrison's Rocky. That's an icon.
I have nothing against Kirk Hammett, but calling THE Les Paul Kirk Hammett's Les Paul feels kinda wrong.
pomaranc747 I agree, plus Kirk has so many other guitars that could’ve been put on another list
Well since kirk bought it it is KIRKS guitar. Like it or not
Xander Mohan so. Do you meant that if you would buy a used house it still wont be yours. Cos the previous owner ones had it.
