The character of Barca is from Carthage, which the Romans defeated in several wars (known as the Three Punic Wars) during the 3rd and 2nd century BC! The Punians established a sea empire in the western Mediterranean Sea spanning from the coasts of nowadays Spain over almost all the northern coast of the African continent (except Egypt), the Balearic isles, Corsica, Sardinia & the western part of Sicily.
The name is most likely influenced by their most famous general, Hannibal Barcas, who led them during the second Punic War and almost defeated the Roman Republic and brought them their hardest defeat (battle of Cannae where nearly 80.000 Romans died)!
149 or 148 BC, the City of Carthage got entirely destroyed by the Romans and salt put on the soil, so nothing might grow there anymore!
A century later, the Romans under Caesar built a city of their own there, also called Carthage which was quite important until the Vandals took it over in the 5th century AC
I've seen everything already, but watching Ash's reactions is how I should've watched them all. Dude, you're so much fun to watch. I don't normally watch movie/tv reactions but Ash is just to much fun.

Fun Fact about this series. During its initial run, some of the CGI shots were not finished. Well, not not finished, but just rudimentary, if you know what I mean. Like the establishing shots of the Training House by the cliff. But when the series was released on Blu-ray, the shots were completed as intended, and the releases mentioned "Enhanced CGI" on them. I've seen other programs that have done this as well...originally airing with incomplete CG, but later releasing on home media with completed effects, and the one comes to mind is Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. During initial airings, the spaceship shots had almost basic CGI. But the DVD had the fully textured shots. Andromeda was an early 2000s series and Spartacus was an early 2010s series.
Andy Whitfield (the Australian actor playing Spartacus) died of cancer (in his prime), shortly after the first season. A different actor played Spartacus in the 2nd season finale. The third season (prequel) has almost no Spartacus. It is mostly about the origins of Crixus and Batiatus' gladiator school which he inherits from his father. I hope you will also react to the 1960 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, "Spartacus" starring Kirk Douglas. Outside of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, it's my favorite movie of all-time.

18:20 the helmets were purposefully made to make fighting harder for them. in that way the fights would be more exciting. they also did stuff like giving a guy a kings pear and a crappy small shield against another guy with a small sword and a huge shield, or a guy with no protection with a net against a guy all geared up. Romans put more thought into this than it's shown on the series. they even had blind or blindfolded fighters in between the important fights

07:50 the reason he stands like that is because it is a fighting stance for being prepared for battle at all times. I also stand like that sometimes.
There are many different gladiator classes that were featured in the show. Some made it, some didn't. Here's a list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_gladiator_types
Most common you'll see in the show are Murmillo (sword and high shield), Retiarius (trident and rope net), Thraex (curved Thracian blade with shield), Hoplomachus (spear, short shield, short sword), and (my fave) Dimachaerus (double sword)
Would've been fun to see your girlfriend react to this one with you. Seriously, though, this series doesn't pull any punches and just keeps getting better and better. Once you've made it through Sparticus and and LoTR, you should check out the recent Battlestar Galactica series.
Plot Twist: The show only gets better and better. It is worthy of the legend himself.

@@justtrustash - I don't work for them, just a VERY satisfied customer. I use the Movavi Video Suite, and think it's fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend it if you're looking to make an upgrade to some pretty robust editing features that all work great and don't want to break the bank with Adobe. May may make your life a lot simpler. Not posting a link, because You Tube gets weird about that, but they're very easy to find, and have free demos of all their software as well.

Lmao i was laughing so much during this entire video, bro your humor is so funny man, Jupiter's cock XD This series is the best man, love it :D About where is the ancient city of Carthage, it's in modern day Tunisia, near the capital city of Tunis to the north eastern direction of the country, the ruins of the city are still there. Carthage used to be the ancient superpower after the Romans until they were destroyed by them. Did you know that according to some legends it's said that the Romans are descendants of the surviving Trojans (which would give reasoning to their historical military and cultural ties to the Greeks at least in their early/late stages of the Roman/Byzantine history) that later inhabited the Italian peninsula and even later found the city of Rome and the rest is then history as we know. Carthaginians are said to have been descendants of the Phoenicians who then were from the city of Tyre in the Levant's coast which is in modern day Lebanon. I also want to say that i'm not a professor of ancient history or something nor i claim to be one so if i make some mistakes with what i say then i'm happy to get corrections from people who know more, those are just things i have read and learned over the years.

Also, Barca was from Carthage. A nation in Africa. But I think it was a bit historically inaccurate from this show because in real life Carthage fell to the Romans about a hundred years before Spartacus' rebellion.

One of the reasons I love this show so much is that it has gay characters in it but they don't portray them like many shows and movies do, like the super feminine flamboyant type. Instead, they got people like Barca who's an absolute BEAST!

Crixus is from Gaul which is now France.
Thrace is now Bulgaria.
Blond became a trend to Roman women after expansion in Germany, France and Britain. Roman women would buy slave women from these regions in order to shave their heads for blonde wigs.
Blond was common among a lot of Germanic tribes (mostly east of the river Rhine), but not so with the Celts (inhabitants of Gaul and Britannia)!
Roman merchants more often traded for blond hair to make wigs instead of „shaving“ slaves

@@alexwade2285 because slaves need to be constantly housed & fed and are expensive to buy... and growing hair needs months if not an entire year to reach the length again for a wig, whereas you can get hair relatively cheap trading for things you have in masses but the Germanic people didn‘t have like amphorae, clay jugs, goods from the Mediterranean area and such things!

He was from modern day Tunisia... Carthage.
