So many shows either drag on too long (walking dead), or the ending was awful (GOT). This show had the right amount of seasons, and an epic ending. One of my favorite shows of all time that didn't get the recognition it deserved. Kudos to the second spartacus actor for being able to do about as good of a performance as possible. It was so hard moving on when Andy passed away, and by the end. You were really liking the new actor. Such a great series that still holds strong today. So many memorable characters in the series.

One of the best finale of any series!
First this is a shoutout to Liam McIntyre as Spartacus. Like Manu Bennett this episode was his and he performed brilliantly throughout.
The last battle was pretty great considering there budget restrictions. More emotional than grandeur of the action.
The ending was sort of inevitable cause of history but they did a great job with it.
Let's talk Gannicus. By far my favorite character and his ending was bittersweet. I read old reviews and many did not like his ending.
Again I say it was apropos to a great warrior where it was almost impossible for him to fall in battle 1v1.
Plus someone had to be crucified (a reference to history). The end of him seeing Oenomaus and dreaming of
being in the arena with one last roar, was well done. Maybe you could have had him in the arena weilding his dueal swords in his fighting style
    of Dimachaerus.
Throughout the series and episodes, Liam McIntyre just got stronger and stronger. The ending performance was well deserved.
His physicallity in the final fight scene and death were brilliant. The fight between him and Crassus is well done, with
Spartacus exhausted from battle yet hacks through Crassus' bodyguards and could have bested Crassus. A true champion.
The death scene is emotional and well acted again. I loved when Laeta utters his name and
Liam says "Spartacus..that is not my name. I shall finally hear it again, given voice by loving wife."
A reference to him not choosing the name and freedom and seeing Sura.
The ending credit scene with great musical score and final "curtain call" for the major characters (stole this for Wiki).
Every time I watch this I immediately want to fire up the start of this series again. It just gets me.
Of course we have the fitting and final tribute of Andy Whitfield yelling "I am Spartacus!".
Tv trivia: At start of episode 10 you have all the characters yelling "I am Spartacus". A tribute to the 1960 film and of course
tribute to Andy and the show in general.
Naevia's death is that mirrored of Diona in Gods of Arena.
Spartacus tells Agron he is the last gladiator of the House of Batiatus, but there were multiple characters
who were shown as background. I guess they were just playing other characters and not their original gladiators.
    History:
Spartacus did hold gladiator games honoring Crixus with captured Romans.
Before the battle, Spartacus killed his horse in front of his men, claiming that if they win he will
have choice of any horse he wants.
Spartacus supposedly did get close to Crassus but was hacked down by his bodyguards, sorta mirroring the episode.
Yet Spartacus body was never recovered.
Around 6,000 slave were crucified along the Appian Way, a road that led from Capua to Rome.
This was a great journey and I want to watch the whole reaction on Patreon. I had a blast!
    I AM SPARTACUS!

I also thought Gannicus’ death was bittersweet. The one man who for the longest time disavowed Spartacus’ rebellion against the Romans, becoming the only one of Spartacus’ generals to die symbolically on the cross in its name.
His final scene being spiritually reunited with Oenomaus and the arena, roaring in ecstasy, I’d like to think this represented his passing into the afterlife.

Spartacus cutting down Crassus' bodyguard/centurions does have a basis in some of the historical records, as do some of the the absolutely batshit "sounds made up for Hollywood" moments: the slaves melting down their fetters for swords, using the frozen dead to help fill in a bridge for the gladiator army to escape, Roman prisoners forced to fight for Crixus' funeral... it's just an incredible story.

    • @AT-rr2xw

The final battle was probably a bit of Hollywood. Sure, there may have been around 32,000 Roman troos, but there were more than the maybe thousand rebels that were shown.

What I find almost comical about Tiberius's death is the look of bewilderment on his face. Like he's thinking to himself "THIS is how I die?".
Great scene between Spartacus and Crassus when they meet. The understanding and grudging respect they shared. It reminds me of a similar scene from the movie Heat.

A great thing to remember is that Spartacus was just expected to be a slave. The romans didn't expect him to make the largest slave rebellion they ever had. Yeah it was a downer, but it had hope at the end. Also we still remember Spartacus today.
Also It's good to remember Spartacus is basically a dead man walking. He died when his wife died in his arms. That's why he seems to invite death around him.

I think the biggest problem with this show is poor pacing. Either too slow, or too fast.
The very first episode was actually visually one of the worst in the entire series. The blood was over the top, too much sex and nudity, poor green screen. The second episode was already a lot better, but kinda slow. episode 3 was a little better, but only at episode 4 is when the pace gets better and drags less. That's the first season.
The second (prequel) season in my opinion dragged for too long.
Even if it's only 6 episodes, they felt really boring at times.
Season 3 (vengeance) was in my own opinion the most boring of the 4 seasons. It dragged out for way longer than it needed to be. I even had my hand on my cheek from boredom (that classic pose) while watching episode 7 of vengeance.
Season 4 was the exact opposite.
To me it was the best season along with 1, but the pacing again was what bothered me. Season 4 rushed instead of dragged. It felt like there was so much more to show and tell. Mabey 3 more episodes, or split season 4 into 2 seasons of 7 episodes and you got yourself a finale that wasn't rushed.
Like crixus departure and battles+defeat, the crucifixions were also totally rushed. (in reality, the crucifixions probably too an entire day, possibly several.
Pompey killed the remaining rebels who tried to flee after the final battle
(not even showed in the series at all).
In reality, there was a second split from spartacus army. Crixus split first and was killed, then Gannicus and a German named Castus split in their final winter and were killed as well.

A fantastic finale to the series, albeit a bitter sweet one. Tiberius' death was a welcome relief. Both Crassus and Caesar would go on to form the Triumverate with Pompey; each meeting their respective ends. As Jimmy said, this version of Caesar is unlike the one that is portrayed in his later years. The impulsive Caesar that we see was subsequently tempered, as he matured into the calculating and tactical Caesar of the late Republican era. No doubt he learned a lot from Crassus himself.
The ending was truly a double whammy. As Gannicus is crucified, he remembers Oenomaus and his days of glory in the arena. He knows that it's all over, yet with one last dying breath manages to give a triumphant roar. "I'm Gannicus, god of the arena !" The irony is evident because, back in season 2, he declared to Lucretia that he was "no martyr upon cross". Ultimately, he chooses to sacrifice himself so that others may live. Cut to a dying Spartacus, who says "Do not shed tear. There is no greater victory than to fall from this world a free man." Agron states that one day Roman would crumble but Spartacus' name would be remembered forever. 😢 Makes me cry every time. Thank you Steven DeKnight and all who made one of the most entertaining and heartfelt shows ever.

In the pilot episode, Spartacus' wife tells him her vision where she sees him kneeling before a red serpent which plays out in season 1 but again here with Agron's red serpent shield marking his grave. It was a nice touch. It felt right for Spartacus to die in battle. Gannicus should've had a better death tho, IMO. Historically Crassus crucified any slave connected to Spartacus but they could've chose some other known face than Gannicus to do that with. (Real Gannicus died in battle.)
Oh, Kore. Poor dumb girl. She forget that she was ultimately just a slave and that Crassus is a Roman shit who values power over people.
Like with "Black Sails", I see this as a bittersweet ending. Some of the people we cared about made it out alive. Although you might trade that to see a successful slave rebellion but history was not on their side.

Also let’s see if this hurts as much as it does a ton of others. After they finished War of The Damned there WAS talks of continuing on the story but instead of it being focused on Spartacus since he’s dead, following history and continuing with the Roman’s perspective and centering the story around the triumvirate of Pompey Caesar & Crassus using the same actors as they did this season. It didn’t pan out but can you imagine if we’d gotten THAT story? You’d get more MC and probably would’ve gotten to see exactly how he helped shape Caesar in the one we think of to this day.

I truly think this is the only show I've experienced that I wish I could erase from my memory, just so I could experience it with fresh eyes one more time.
I truly do think this shows ending is far Superior to Game of Thrones.
In some ways I'm glad it didn't run on longer than necessary to tell the story, but I can't think of another show outside of DBZ/DCAU series that i would give anything to experience more adventures with.
Manu Bennett is so criminally underrated in his role as Crixus and it was amazing to watch this first, and then see him as Deathstroke on the Arrowverse.
Crassus and Julius Caesar are honestly amazing and fit exactly into the type of villians that would fit into a Series like Game of Thrones.
Men motivated by both Loyalty to their homeland, their individual families, but their own personal Ambitions are cloaked behind the Veil of Politics.
Lucy Lawless might be known to most people as Xena Warrior Princess but I will always remember her as possibly the only women who could rival the Likes of Cersei Lannister and Margarey/Olenna Tyrell in cunning,Deception, and Beauty. Lucretia and Quintus Batiatus would rival Tywin Lannister in Ambition,Deception, and the willingness to do anything to see one's family rise to the top of the world.
