It's actually rather impressive how much they managed to butcher such a great film in the theatrical cut. Director's cut is one of my favourite movies, theatrical cut isn't worth the time.

The directors cut is the only version that should be seen. The theatrical release was a travesty of studio interference that gutted half the story out to cater to people with no attention span

Absolutely, but director's cut sadly got a messed up soundtrack placement in some parts, which ruined some scenes for me. So as with Troy director's cut (which is unnecessary to watch imho, added nothing except for some gore)

The acting work from everyone was really good but Edward Norton as the King of Jerusalem was great. It's probably really difficult to give a quality, emotional acting performance behind a mask but Norton was able to convey to the audience what the character was feeling when he was on screen.

Bloom, agreed. Epic fiction reasonably close simplification of the Fall of the Kingdom of the Franks.

the main thing cut from the Directors Cut was the Queens son. he was not in the theatrical cut at all. when the King died, Guy just becomes king and we skip the whole other sub-plot. also all of the plot detail at the beginning of how Balian and the priest were brothers, and Godfrey and the French lord were also brothers, was also changed to just cut out the family connections

I like they added the flashbacks of him and his wife. Little things like that make the directors cut a lot better than the theatrical release.

The director's cut was the first version of this film I saw and it blew my mind. For the life of me, I couldn't understand why it hadn't swept the Oscars like Gladiator did because, to my mind, it was absolutely on par in terms of quality.
Then I saw the theatrical cut, and I finally understood 🙄

I watched the theatrical cut when it came out since The Crusades is my favorite era. I enjoyed the movie, especially the finest performance of Edward Norton's career.
But OMG, when I finally saw the Director's Cut a decade later, I was shocked at how much more coherent a story there was.

I haven't seen any of your other reactions because catching this one was 100% random luck, looking to check what else you've got. Bloom bias aside this one of the few movies where Everyone in the cast understood the assignment. BTW there really was a Balian raising hell about this time in history.

For the most part they cut story and character motivations out of the theatrical. So they left most of the plot, but don't give reasons for why anything happens.
Bloom's movie was Pirates, but he does try a bit hard to be what he sees as a "leading man," going so far as to stipulate in contracts that his characters are not weak, or whatever. It doesn't help that he was sick with a super cold while filming this. He could have used a bit more charisma in this role, but he didn't ruin the movie or anything for me, at least not the Director's Cut here, which has a lot more ensemble.

I watched the editing process the editor had to make on the instruction of the producers and it was painful to watch. She had to maintain two versions at all times. Basically the opening was changed and you don't know that Balian was an engineer, nor do you know he was the brother of the pastor. Also the child's sub plot is completely removed.

Orlando Bloom definitely isnt good enough to carry a movie, luckily everybody around him is great and the movie is great to look at so that he doesnt sink it :) the theatrical release does hurt the narrative, although you could say the director's cut is a bit too long, wish there was a version that hits the sweet spot, but the director's cut is definitely the better version :)

    R. Scott tried to get a message through with this movie, but it was the wrong one.
He reached to some famous medievalist historians and he was rejected because he wanted to misrepresent a lot of things and deviate from historical accuracy. No historian wanted to put his name in that movie.
He finally got one but insisted on his own historical and ideological agenda.
Orlando Bloom is a miscast as always. The rest of the actors are all amazing.

@@isabelsilva62023 you have faith that people do that? I don't. that's how false narratives get created. And start calling Islam a religion of peace. Every country they invaded when Islam started were Christian countries. They were colonizing before any of the European powers. Christians to this day are treated as second class citizens in those countries. And people still call Islam a religion of peace because of false narratives....

Ridley Scott is very hit and miss - i'd call this one a hit. The history is decent, although most of the characters are made up for the film. Saladin and Guy de Lusignan were both real and are pretty accurately portrayed. The general vibe and aesthetic is on point. And yes, it's an oddity that in a film with such a stacked cast the lead was by far the least interesting. They could have kept Liam Neeson as the main character with just a little plot rejigging.
