I just bought a 2009 jeep commander in QATAR. I am planning to change the spark plugs today. Your video made me realize what a hard work I have in front of me and how many tools i will have to buy. I could go to a garage to do this, but after watching this video it boost my confidence.
I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L Hemi engine. I hadn't worked on the engine before, just brakes all around and a driver's side window motor. I watched this video twice and went for it. The video was a big help. All went well. I got a chance to use my new 1/4 inch air ratchet as well to remove the coil packs. Many thanks!
That explanation regarding antiseize is exactly what I have been thinking, as well. I use a small dab, and I am careful not to overtorque. The rust was impressive!
He knows his stuff. He's been around for some time. There's just been a ton of smear campaign about anti-sieze as consequence of people WAY over doing it.
Brian I am always impressed with the care you take when working on cars and how methodical you are. This is why I like using good independent shops. I think it's too bad that flat rate often turns good techs into mediocre ones.
I like when you make reference to bolt thread and pitch sizes. As a machinist it is a pet peeve of mine when mechanics think that the size of the hex head is the bolt size.
Thanks. I like to do a job once and then hear from the owners friends wanting work done on their cars. Call backs due to my mistakes jack up the schedule as I give them #1 priority. Therefore I don't want any errors PERIOD!
never had any problem anti seize on spark plug and the fact we use it on Aircraft engines and to eliminate the contamination on the electrode just put anti seize few thread back before the electrode so no anti seize will drop in any cylinder :)
Brian, I'm all ways amazed how well your videos are done in such close quarters. Your videos in the engine or under the vehicle are very easy to see. Thanks
Thanks! It's because I got a nicer camera. My old videos bear comments complaining endlessly of poor lighting and that people couldn't see anything. So, I did something to fix it. ; )
Yes I have read much the same about the third gen Hemi. They also don't use a true Hemispherical combustion chamber but more of a pent roof design. Along with the twin plugs help it quite a bit in my understanding.
grease will cause the plug to seize , brian is correct in what he is doing . i have been working as a mechanic 20 years and never had a problem . brian is a top notch mechanic . every vid he ever post was accurate
Sony Handycam with a Lens G as they put it. Model # is HDR CX260V I think. It was the most reasonable one at Costco with the best low light performance and steady hand feature.
the bolts are threaded thru the coil pack so you dont drop them. loosen coil pack bolts enough to just get off the head. theyll stay in the coil pack, preventing u from dropping them
Out of passing interest, almost all (reciprocating) aircraft engines have used 2 plugs per cylinder since the stone age. Mostly for reliability, with two completely independent ignition systems. But there is a slight performance advantage as well. Some old time big radials like the P&W 4360 had 28 cylinders, or 56 plugs per engine. If you had 4 engines, that was a mere 224. The spruce Goose ran 8 4360's for 448 plugs! Those aircraft plugs aren't cheap, and were easy to accidentally 'load up'.
Hey i just wanted to mention the hemi name come from a hemispherical combustion chamber in the cylinder head. but you were on the right track the head in concave and the piston is convex... What a wild set up with 16 spark plus though ive never seen that except on top fuel dragsters with magnetos.. great video Brian
It's coming soon! I just spent more $ getting my computer up to speed so it turns out well before I edit it. It's kind of a big deal to me that it turns out good.
An old trick I use when I have over tight plugs. Start the engine and let it run for about 4 to 5 minutes. shut it down and the plugs come out like butter... It's similar to what one would do with a torch on a rusted bolt.
I can definitely see where he's coming from- people used to use way too much and it was pushed at the parts counter to the extreme- especially at Autozone. Since then, there's been a push in the other direction that has nearly made a witch hunt of the topic. In marketing some one is always trying to make a buck through fear one way or another. I don't get a Christmas Card from Permatex, but I'd hate to see them quit making Anti-seize too.
Agreed on the use of anti seize! A little goes a long way. Question would be, why are they using dissimilar metals? Strength? I like your level headed approach with common sense added as a bonus! That is how I approach things in the office machine environment but with that said I get paid per mile so I need to keep my auto's up to speed...
Working on aircraft is nice... quality stuff to the bone. You need whats called an 'A&P' (Airframe & Powerplant) license to do so, and there are training programs all over the US. Go googling. Also search on 'AMT' (Aviation Maintenance Technician) programs. The FAA web site has loads of info as well, including tons of training materials free for the downloading... check it out. The flip side of A/C work, is that you have to sign off legally on everything you touch. Google that aspect as well.
You don't use anti seize compound on spark plugs. Use or brush milk of magnesia. Which is what we use on Aircraft engine spark plugs. It will protect them from corrosion and they come out like butter even after 5 years of engine operation at 1800 degrees.
Hey Brian, when i suspect plugs have been in engine for awhile or might be diffucult to remove, i shoot a little PB blaster down the wells let it soak for 10 min then ill loosen 1 full turn and leave them another 5 minutes while pb blaster soaks down the threads. thanks again for the awesome videos you produce.
Please tell me what bad thing could happen if anti-seize fell into the cylinder that would be worse than grease, oil, ATF, or fuel injector cleaner? It sounds terrible, I just want to know what this terrible looks like.
Anti-seize shouldn't hurt the engine if a little got into the cylinder. The reason it works is it's actually a combination of grease and some finely ground glass. After running the motor the grease burns off leaving the glass particles between the threads and the block, which won't melt and engine temperatures. The glass keeps the dissimilar metals separated enough that the don't seize. Anyway if a little gets into the cylinder the grease will burn and the glass will work its way out the exhaust or make it to the oil
or you can eliminate all concern, and apply the anti-sieze 1/2 way up the thread away from the end you gap. A bit up away from the end of the threads closest to the combustion chamber
Well even though this was done nine years ago I'm actually looking at buying one of these and you learn something new every day thank you very much 👍🏻👌🏻
LOL I've been a Mercedes Benz tech for around 8 years now my bottle of anitseize lasted me since the first day I started as a tech entire seize doesn't hurt it depends on. The amount. You out of. The threads you don't need to put a dollop of it on the plug its just a little dab will do and as you turn to tighten it spreads around
pretty much...lol the plug breaks in half and part of it stays in the cylinder head. You use an impact to take them out in one peice not to put them back in.
Hello sir, are you still active? Got one of these (‘07 Overland) and I don’t think the spark plugs have been changed out in oh well over 80k miles, last time was at the dealership so probably over torqued like you say, likely seized up. Dealership now wants $800 for spark plug change in 2020. Do I try to do it myself? Or is it time to get rid of the car? Car would probably fetch $1500-2000 if anything, so definitely not willing to shell out $800 on a spark plug job...
This is something I'd expect from BMW but at least access isn't horrible like on the late 90's blazers where you have to rotate the engine or remove the steering shaft to get to #3. I always use a rag to smear the little dab of anti seize over the threads to make sure any excess doesn't get on the tip of the plug or anywhere I don't want it so there's a nice even coat over the threads.
Hey Brian, I have a problem. I have a 2008 4runner, bought it brand new but it started making these noise. Everyone says its normal, but it wasn't like that brand new. pretty loud at times also. Exact noise on youtube(.)com/watch?v=C_ny_NJ_PkE . Do you know what it is? My 4runner is 2wd so it doesn't have any zerk fittings to lube anything up.
hi brian how are you ?? i was watching some old video off yours and saw spanky will we see her back in a video and i hope she doing oke my best regards to her
Antiseize is not to be used on plugs especially newer plugs, they are made with a coating/plating that acts or gives the same results of antiseize. Plus it messes with torque values. Worked at 2 dealerships where we got notices stating the facts and no longer would we use antiseize on plugs, antiseize is great but not on everything.
fun fact about this video............on of the more new Mercedes Benz...........you will have this many spark plugs XD very use full video. not fun to change the plugs on a mercedes SL 500 T_T

Depends on what kind of plug you use. Iridiums go 100K+
I like when you make reference to bolt thread and pitch sizes. As a machinist it is a pet peeve of mine when mechanics think that the size of the hex head is the bolt size.

Always learning from you and passing your professional ideals on my own page when I can. From one Brian to another. Thank you brother!
An old trick I use when I have over tight plugs. Start the engine and let it run for about 4 to 5 minutes. shut it down and the plugs come out like butter... It's similar to what one would do with a torch on a rusted bolt.
That's a great idea. I will do that and thread them back in- then out and repeat as needed.
That's awesome! I was looking at pictures of one of the engines of that B-25 that crashed in March 1955 and noticed all the cylinder heads it had.
I can definitely see where he's coming from- people used to use way too much and it was pushed at the parts counter to the extreme- especially at Autozone. Yes. And because they are $20 ea. And I'm cheap. I use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.
You don't use anti seize compound on spark plugs. Use or brush milk of magnesia. Which is what we use on Aircraft engine spark plugs. It will protect them from corrosion and they come out like butter even after 5 years of engine operation at 1800 degrees.
I used to love these tune ups at the dealer.
+Curt Simshauser I bet! What kind of quad are you flying these days. I saw your eagle footage- it was awesome!
+briansmobile1 dji phantom 3 but the Phantom 4 looks pretty cool.

Top notch vid as always Brian. I appreciate your professionalism.
exam week and i've spent my time watching 2 bikes get washed, a tyre inflated and spark plugs changed. back to work, aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
Thanks- I have to get it long for ski season or my viking helmet just looks out of place.
I think its more for emissions reasons than efficiency. But then again efficiency and emissions usually go hand in hand I guess.
I always put antiseize on my plugs, never had a single problem. People just put too much like you said
Now there's a smart man!
You are awesome Brian thanks for doing what you do

Part of a Tune Up includes cleaning the Fuel injectors...!
Well even though this was done nine years ago I'm actually looking at buying one of these and you learn something new every day thank you very much 👍🏻👌🏻
Those are designed to go all the way down and installed with a "crush GASKET"...! No guessing as to how far they need to go.
Reggie Watts.... Brian, you get better and better.
Every time I see a Jeep Commander, I think of Hank Shrader from Breaking Bad.
Wouldn't it make more sense to remove all the coil packs then the plugs and replace ? Thanks.
Would a v6 have less plugs?
You watched through the 7:00 mark on right?
I got married the same day she did. Same building even.
thanks for the video brian, keep them coming love your style!
No, "should"s are irrelevant. Do what works best to meet your objectives.
Thank you fur the video Brian . I'm sorry that you weren't having a very good day
I have never touched a spark plug with an air tool, and I have changed thousands of them on all sorts of engines.
apparently you've never changed plugs on a 5.4 3valve....
I haven't but are you saying you cannot do it without air tools?
pretty much...lol the plug breaks in half and part of it stays in the cylinder head. You use an impact to take them out in one peice not to put them back in.
I need a better shot of removing the connectors, don't want to break them. I don't see a "tab". Would be nice to see a close-up of the connector.
regular anti seize, silver anti seize, or nickel anti seize? There are so many options.
Oh Brian; previous wrench was so inept. " NEVERSEIZE" proper torque. Easy does it...
Hemi is not best design for efficiency/emissions so it needs help to get more complete burn (better efficiency/emissions).
2 plugs per piston (8X2=16). Brian, no zombie vid this year?
Satire. People are often a lot harder on themselves than they need to be. It doesn't seem weird to them, but it's not healthy either.
Brian- didn't you do a video before about changing a worn out bushing with the press??
+jim dandy I did on the front diff of this same Jeep.
Google Hemi piston "images"

.... $8 for that much anti-seize?!? Why have I been paying more for a tiny tube?!?!?
oh i didn't know Dodge had factory pro mod engines :P
Hey Brian, How often do you recommend changing the plugs?
i took a bite out of a bar of soap when my mother once threatened me with it lol i think i won that one
So no matter what I drive I should use anti seize?
Cool stuff rwbishop, that is good to know.
why are there 16 spark plugs? I thought you only need 1 spark plug per cylinder.....
Do you think that his may have 16 because its a HEMI??? Just asking
he said that, yeah.
the 6.2 raptor is the same way...16 plugs.
Think of my sweet mother holding some soap or a wooden spoon.
More efficient burn my friend
hi brian how are you ?? i was watching some old video off yours and saw spanky will we see her back in a video and i hope she doing oke my best regards to her
+Erwin Ramnandanlall She's doing great, just saw her on the 4th. Her channel is D6spanky here on RUclips.
"Hemi" refers to the hemispherical combustion chamber of the heads...not the shape of the pistons.
My 07 wrx has plugs like that
gracias amigo !!!
what is the spark plug gap?
+Asael Medina I don't remember, but it's on the emissions sticker under your hood.
.045
Am I the only person that thought "Blue Man Group changes 16 spark plugs"?
Why 16?

Thank
I have abottle of anitseize for 5 years now
Someone used an impact on a spark plug... in an aluminum head? Dang, dont care if the threads were a mile long on a plug im not using an impact gun!
Are you serious?
Google Pratt & Whitney 4360. RUclips them as well.
If the battery is leaking acid should it be used and why care if you get a little hole in a $5 shirt At work
1hateeverything
how do you not swear and cuss while doing a job like that
hemispherical head….
26:58 damn Brian nice beard
I'm so smart,...RUclips is below me! Ha! I Pologize
fun fact about this video............on of the more new Mercedes Benz...........you will have this many spark plugs XD very use full video. not fun to change the plugs on a mercedes SL 500 T_T
+RioZLander Thanks!
Sounds like an oil change tech overhearding real techs talking about important things......
got weird at 10:16 -10:25 just sayin...
