My Dad worked for a company that did financial modeling for DaimlerChrysler when they were putting this into production. Over a year before it went to market every forecast showed this vehicle would fail the market. It was expensive at the time but had a downmarket interior. Execs in Germany did not want to share the very sophisticated platform from ML suv with their counterparts in Detroit. That was a scaleable architecture that rode better and the machine tools already exited for it, but the Daimler people thought it would "cheapen" Mercedes. Meanwhile, Chrysler had already tooled-up the plant to manufacture it. 100’s of millions of development cost went into this, which the forecasts also showed the company would not recoup-and they didn’t. All these details just add color to all the things you mentioned in your video about the size and so forth.

Awesome comment thanks for the extra information. Always interesting to hear more about what goes on behind the scenes. I know mercedes was always keeping what they had away from Chrysler and almost letting them fend for themselves, definitely not the most successful merger in that aspect.

@Ohad Paran, were I you, I would get a Jeep Commander, add in a Hellcat, Hellcat Demon, or Hellephant crate engine kit, make it completely luxury on the inside, as well as the outside, make its performance top notch with all of the best parts in the world, and make it look awesome.

The problem with the Daimler Chrysler tie up was that Daimler wouldn't share enough resources with Chrysler and Chrysler didn't do enough to make them share their stuff.

    • @ohadparan2853
      @ohadparan2853 4 года назад +2

@@itsbigal92 Absolutely and that percolated throughout the entire organization. Like I mentioned, from really big things like vehicle architectures, powertrains, and machine-tools, and all the way to QC procedures, lean manufacturing methodologies, supply-chain optimization, budget forecasting, and even marketing practices. Had there been the real synergy that Dieter Zeutche sold to the Chrysler execs during negotiations, things might look a lot different today.

I had a 2006 Hemi and the granny failed/burned up in two years. Diagnosis? They said the Benz tranny could not hold up to the Hemi engine. Once they rebuilt it, under warranty, it has been solid for the last 12 years.

Just passed the 250,000 mile mark with my Commander. I still love it but I do admit there are areas that needed improvement. The third row was nice to have for when you needed the extra seating. Didn't use them much but they were handy when I did need them. It's a great vehicle for hauling virtually anything I need, my boat, my cargo trailer, all my work supplies. It's been a tough and dependable vehicle and I'd buy another one if they still made them. I like the look of it better than the Grand Cherokee. I'll be sad to see mine go when it's time. I bought my ‘07 Commander diesel in late ‘08 and to this day it turns heads wherever I go. It’s boxy styling stands out and I don’t mind having the 3rd row seats folded down almost permanently. I always describe it like driving a comfy couch. On long road trips when you see those long stretches of asphalt ahead of you, I like to lower the drivers seat, activate cruise control and just steer. I can honestly say that every day that I get into my Commander feels like the first day I took delivery. I take longer routes to wherever I travel as often as I can, just to spend more time (and diesel) in the drivers seat. I keep it serviced regularly and to date have never experienced any major problems.
I plan to keep it until the cows come home; I just love it so much. It’s become normal for total strangers to try get my attention to ask me questions about it. So much so that a few years ago I had the windows almost blacked out because people kept putting their greasy faces against the windows to peer inside, even at red lights. That was a major security concern for me. I’ve also happened upon strangers posing next to the car, taking selfies.
Nowadays it’s mostly a car for my dogs to have all that 2nd and 3rd row spacing (when seats are folded) to laze about in.
Too many vehicles look far too similar nowadays; as though designers copy and paste designs across brands and class of vehicles. I feel like an individual in my Commander because there are so few on the road in the city (and country) I live in. I cannot say enough positive things about the Commander. Although the boxy shape isn’t to everyone’s preference; it’s definitely mine.

A year ago I was given my brother’s 2008 Commander that he had owned for 12 years. It was kind of a family car as we all used it since he had multiple. It’s the car I learned to drive in 8 years ago and the car I always wanted. It has almost 200,000 miles and still runs great. He took great care of it over the years. I feel incredibly safe driving it despite how big it is. It definitely has its quirks and wear and tear, but over all it is still in good condition all these years later. We as a family have gotten so much great use out of it for the little amount of work we’ve had to put into it over the years. I can’t tell you how many times people have told I should get rid of it because of how much gas it takes, but I refuse. I love it dearly.

Just started driving, and my parents' 14 year old commander is the car I've inherited. Yes, it's definitely a gas guzzler, and friends complain about the high back seats. The speakers aren't what they used to be, some plastic stuff is broken. It doesn't exactly drag race, the inside is dirty as hell, and it has its share of quirks. But dammit it does its job 180,000 miles later. It has a rugged, reliable character that I get from no other car. Maybe that's because I've been in it almost my whole life, but I know I can always rely on it to do its job.

I love driving it and I love the look. I’ve rebuilt the entire suspension on my 06 and the 5.7 has almost 200k miles and still runs strong! I think I’ll rebuild the transmission at when it does hit 200k and keep on driving it!

I own a 2006 Commander limited 4x4. Bought it used in 2014 with 90k miles for 11 grand. I believe it blue books for about half that today even though its still in great condition. A couple of years ago i had it moderately lifted, 2" in the rear, 3" the front to even out that forward slope which i didn't care for. I added some new, fatter tires (265/65 R17) and cool black Vision wheels. Gas mileage hasn't changed much, still sucks, but it looks sick, compared to stock! Ive been offered 10 and 12 grand for it on 2 separate occasions and I had probably should've jumped at the offer but that boxy gas hog has really grown on me and I declined the offers. Hope I don't end of regretting it!

For those like me that own a Commander with problems in regards to electrical problems such as windows/interior lites/ and remote door locking issues, Chances are your wiring harness in your driver’s side door has cracked or broken wires and requires splicing or a change out. If you’re starter only works intermittently or your cruise control not working. Check your green wire that plugs into your starter as it may have came loose.

I loved this video and I LOVE my 2008 Commander Limited 3.0CRD Diesel Anniversary Edition. From the day I saw this car on the Jeep stand at the auto show I wanted one. Gorgeous classic lines and unlike any other SUV in the world. To this day I get looks of admiration and great interest. She rides like on a cloud, performs beautifully and tows like a dream. Mine is Mineral Grey with Beige leather trim, has just 62,000kms/35,000miles on the clock and is still like brand new. I truly believe the Jeep Commander is a collectable of the future...in fact, they already have a devoted following and becoming hard to find, at least here in Australia. Thanks Chrysler/Jeep for the vision...I think Commanders were ahead of their time in so many ways, which makes them that much more special to own now.

I love my Commander. I'm a single guy with no kids, so the tiny 3rd row is always folded down. If I fold down the 2nd row of seats as well, I (6ft tall) can comfortably sleep in the back of it on overnight fishing/camping trips. The offroad worthiness is surprisingly good as well, if you pay attention to approach and departure angles. The HEMI is a must though... she's a big girl.
The Grand Cherokee and Commanders of the same year are essentially the same vehicle, but chose the Commander entirely for the body style preference. The extra room was just an added bonus.

I still love this truck and even though its only the V6 I don't feel ready to give up on it right away...It has never let me down, ever! just other day was out and right as I was going to head home it decided not to start. So I sat for a few tried again and even though it made a horrible grinding while the key was turned, it still started I was able to drive home over 40 miles with no problems until I tried starting it again the next morning which it still had a horrible grinding only while the key was turned. one key was let go it stopped but the vehicle did start. Will be changing out the starter once the new one is delivered along with trying to iron out those sensor/check engine issues.

The pre-2008 4.7's and 3.7's are notorious for cyl head failure, which would eventually snowball into a plethora of other problems. (Oil sludging up, valve seats dropping, timing chain guides breaking, overheating, gasket failure, etc.) They need frequent oil changes and/or the upgraded rocket arm design. Same with the Cherokees and Dakota/Ram 4.7's

The styling of the Commander is more Jeep or truck like while the Cherokee became a 4wd minivan or car. Appearance is a huge part of the decision what you buy and for people like us that like something that stands apart and looks rugged, something of what we were used to relating to as a true 4x4 the Cherokee's looks weren't anywhere close.
We wanted it for 4wheeling and towing. For that its excelled. We got our '07 new with the 4.7 V8 (545 trans) as it brought the tow rating from 3,500lbs to 6,500lbs and would not be the gas guzzler that the hemi 5.7 was. Around home for short trips it would get 14mpg and on the highway 21mpg under 60mph cruising but at 70-75 it was a solid 19mpg.
with its full time AWD and part time 4wd low it was capable off road and even in deep sand never really requiring the 4low being used. On the road it handled a wet road like its on rails being stable at speed being comfortable and quiet. 80mph cruise is no big deal.
We still have it though its more a fair weather vehicle now. It still runs and drives like new but has had computer gremlins pop up in the last 30k miles that can frustrate you. Sensors, PCM/TCM required replacement, transfer case shift motor would randomly go into neutral so that was replaced. As I said it runs, drives and looks like it did when I drove it off the lot though there is 196,600 miles on the odometer. The core of the power train, engine trans and differentials have remained flawless even with this kind of use many of which pulling a large boat or camper.
Bottom line, if Chrysler still made this vehicle would I buy another ?
Absolutely ! We have owned a lot of vehicles but even with the few problems its given in its later years its the one we've loved the most.

I bought a secondhand '08 Commander base model (3.6L-V6, Quad I, awd, Dark Taupe color) when he had about 86K miles on it and have loved it ever since. It's now 186K miles and on it's second transmission and second engine and will probably be my last vehicle, especially at today's '23 prices. Cheaper to fix than to buy, right? Had to replace the driver's inside door handle twice due to cheap plastic, the struts in the rear popup window once, the strut holding up the hood once, but I love the boxiness of it, love the color, and being still in great shape, I notice it still turns heads! I've always treated it more as a people-mover, especially when we visit the kids and now grandkids. Love the fact that with the 2 rows of seats down it'll hold a huge amount of stuff on trips and since I'm tall, it has always been more comfy to drive it on long trips rather than my wife's Honda (old and new). These days I've wondered what the cost would be to really convert it to a rock-crawler, but with that new engine only having about 13K miles on it, I probably won't bother. I've read the hemi is the more worthwhile engine to have for that and it's the first thing I'd feel a need to replace in mine to go that route, amongst other things. It'll make someone a great overlander some day, though! I've seen some conversions that still make me think about it now and then! Love this vehicle!

I had an 06 and absolutely loved it. Mine had the 4.7L V8 and it was by far the best thing I've ever driven in snow. It was a perfect balance of power, weight, and AWD system. Sadly right around 100,000 miles it started to go through coolant and no one could figure out why or where it was going. Despite its flaws (door handles were flimsy and easy to break, the opening into the cargo area was restrictive - I could fit bigger things in my wife's 98 CR-V - and of course the gas-mileage sucked) I was sad to get rid of it.

We traded that one and within 6 months regretted it. Our current one is a Limited with the 4.7 V8. It's quirky and runs well when it wants to (I'm pretty much the same way) I've thought about trading it in on something less dramatic but the only SUV on the market that resembles the Commander is the Mercedes G Class. I own a 2006 Commander, I love the thing. Bought it used a couple years ago for like 4500$ with 140 000kms on it. I love the look of these things, and I’ve always been one of those guys that’s said a wrangler is the only jeep. This thing converted me. The style looks way better than any of the other jeep suvs in my opinion. And the interior is extremely comfortable. Of course my problem is that it’s beginning to need more maintenance work which is expected for its age.
Honestly if they made a new one that was similar in style I would absolutely be interested in it

My cousin traded a loaded Blazer for a Commander and still drives it! To her, it's the greatest vehicle Chrysler ever made. There is something quintessentially Jeep about the Commander. I love the way the vehicle looks, but like most buyers, found it too small, cramped, inefficient, and expensive to stomach.
BTW, loved the adjusted for inflation prices! Makes it much easier to see where the vehicle would really fall in today's market.

I paid six grand cash for my 07 limited. Spotless from delaware. I live in central New York and I love it. Never been stuck even in two foot of snow in a storm headed to work. Only issue I had was starter after a month of purchase but I start it for three min every hour in the winter at work to smoke couldn't be mad. 208000 and running quiet and strong. Only thing I complain about is between second and third gear at 40 to 45 it's gutless. Only when warm tho I'm thinking the overdrive. Otherwise I love it

I have an early 06 with 4.7 and QT II, OME HD lift, etc. It is my daily driver. Has been a great truck. I have driven it on long trips and long trails. It is exactly what a JEEP should be. 145,000+ and still just as reliable as it was new. Bought the shop manuals for it.

My 2007 jeep commander is down right now and you can't even buy the parts to fix it now. My front driveshaft broke the bolts off that bolt it to the front differential. When the bolts broke it destroyed the 3 little brackets that hold the front cv joint to the front differential. I called mopar trying to find the bolts and brackets and they told me they no longer make my parts and can't even make replacements for me so I have a $10 yard ornament now that I'm still paying for. I've driven the jeep a wapping 900 miles since I bought it a year ago and haven't been able to drive it since last summer. I'm now waiting for someone to part one out because salvage yards won't even sell them. I was also told by a couple different salvage yards almost every commander that's not wrecked with the 4.7 v8 that comes in ha ssd's the exact same problem. The problem is the bolts are to small to take the torque pulling the vehicle down the road for long periods of time since there basically front wheel drive. Without the front driveshaft in you can't drive it.

Charlie Doughty wow man. I’d be absolutely blindingly livid. I hope the thing was cheap at least? Sounds like it’s gonna be scrapped over mopar’s failure to support it, shocker.

I've owned 2 Commander Limiteds, one back in 06 (New) and one for a few recent years (08) and they are not perfect but loved and adored by my family. With those saddle brown seats, a lift, big tires/wheels and exhaust to make the HEMI sing, it's become a unique niche vehicle on the road which looks and sounds so much better than any of today's cookie cutter, blend into traffic vehicles out there. I get tons of comments and compliments all the time. Oh, and it goes anywhere in any conditions with full confidence with the QDII. It was better looking than that era Grand Cherokees for sure! Now if only the values jumped up in a few years like the old Wagoneers!!

I am the 3rd owner of a 2006 65th Anniversary with 155,000 miles on it. Have had the recalls for ignition switch & computer flashed, changed water pump, many parts of the suspension changed, new tires (of course) & had to replace sensors on tires. Just replaced the ac lines, blower motor for ac / heat, actuator for blend doors & resistor & the usual maintenance and she still runs great! Thankfully I am only 7 minutes from work because gas prices are going up again. Never changed the spark plugs yet either. Love my old girl, but sadly am starting to think about getting something else in the next year or so.
