Ergo Proxy is just WALL-E, but scary
Holy shit
underrated comment
The anime came first, so technically speaking, Wall-E is a kidified version of Ergo Proxy
Hahah thank you so much! You are the GOAT!
EP is 2006, Wall-E is 2008.
Forever my number 1 Anime, Ergo Proxy has always been my favorite since 2006 and no other has managed to reach its greatness🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I wish there was more anime like it. Wolf's rain is prob the most related one to ergo.
@@partycrashers22 Texhnolyze has a similar setting with similar themes.
Serial experiments lain
though i was born in 2006, this is my fav anime
can you add subtitle please i'm french i would watch your video, i loved this serie but i didn't understand all the end when they go back to Romdo
A whole doctorate thesis could be written on the subtlety and deep themes within Ergo Proxy. A shame things like anime and shows aren't given the same credit as literature in academia.
Same for games
probably because it's rather poorly communicated
There literally are academic lectures on Ergo Proxy that you can find right here on YT. For instance there's one by the University of Michigan on their channel on both Ergo Proxy and Serial Experiments Lain. And it's not recent either, it goes back a decade. They recognized its worth even back then.
@@Rocket_Man Academia has examined games for a long time. And I don't mean just if games cause violence or not. They just tend to focus more on obscure (but highly regarded!) titles like Planescape Torment rather than CoD or LoL. But they have also looked at mainstream games when they spot something of value. For instance it didn't take long for the infamous plague that nearly wiped out WoW to attract the attention of epidemiologists.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn I meant mainstream attention anyways as if it was required reading or something to that degree. It may be fun side things in some schools but they'll never have the same pull that some older books do nowadays even if they're extremely out of date in terms of setting and message.
I like the episode where Re-L is narrating about how gross and stinky Vincent is and living w/ him is annoying. They make a cute couple especially w/ Pino as their surrogate daughter.
Shave it shave it shave it
@@andrewthibert1291 this made me laugh
I didnt see it that way. It was Re'l leaving her comfort zone at the expense of living in tight quarters with Vince.
Omg that’s lit my fav episode lolll
I thnik the lack of SOME romantic payoff doomed EP more than the slow pacing. Can't prove me wrong
i wish this video had subtitles. English is not my firt language and even though I got part of it I feel that if it had at last sub n english I would've got it better. Thanks for this video though, really interesting!!

Ergo Proxy is a masterpiece. I hate when people state its pretentious. Yes it's convoluted but that doesn't make it contrived. The amount of philosophical context within the content which actually molds and shapes the story in and of itself is incredibly unsurpassed by most standards of how to frame a story. It's definitely one of a kind and I doubt any writer now would dare to undertake such a feat creating something remotely similar in comparison.
Also, I have to state that this summary breakdown of Ergo Proxy is one of the more comprehensive ones I've seen made on RUclips, so kudos to you.

@@kittykat896 Are you into philosophy?
@@worstward_ well, to an extent, but by no means am I an expert or have any philosophical university courses under my belt. But I am quite informed on and have a particular disdain for certain Postmodernist theories,it's principles,it's applications that have been derived by particular philosophers throughout Postmodern's history in philosophy. A lot of which I take issue with being spouted by the depictions of the 4 philosophers that make up the representation of the collective in the anime ( and a few others not mentioned as well)
@@worstward_ how about you? What's your relationship with philosophy?
Depthness and the effort of giving message of this anime is unexampleed. Berserk and Ergo Proxy is the two anime that can give a person undescribable feelings. One flawless production.
undescribable feelings of saddness
Short version(no psychological talk):
1. Earth becomes inhabitable, toxic air and no sun
2. Original people go to space create proxies to make earth habitable again, they will kill proxies once it is done (sunlight kills amrita)
3. Proxies make fake humans to compost earth and make domes
4. Proxy 1 gets pissed of when he learns original humans plan to kill them
5. Proxy 1 makes a baby with Monad called Ergo Proxy which is immune to sunlight
6. Ergo proxy adventures with Pino and falls inlove ReI (monads clone)
7. Ergo proxy will kill all humans and live happily ever after
The end
Ty!
But I would like to draw to you attention is that , the planet that the proxieses and there creations were healing wasn’t earth . As they found pregnant Aliens at episode 17. So my guess is that earth is done for and they tried to make another planet habaitable for them and even kills its living creature along with the plan you exaplined
Not all hero's wear capes
whoa whoa whoa. hold on cowboy.
how do you know proxy one and monad "had a baby"?
where does it say ergo is immune to sunlight?
by the end of the anime I wasn't sure ergo planned to kill humans or keep killing proxies.
It has been quite some time since we've conversed but I just wanted to thank you for getting me into philosophy. I've read some of your suggested books and they were a bit complicated but nonetheless they were good entry level books. Now... time to watch the video :)
Hope you enjoy!
Could you write what books were those? I've been tip toeing around philosophy, but can't find any decent entry level books and get overwhelmed and bored
@@BerserkDudeould you pin a comment where you give us the sources you have used în making if this video?
Really seems that the surviving original humans were genius psychopaths. Only someone that heartless would go through the trouble just to wreck most of it when they come back. Honestly, I think Proxy One was totally justified with his rage. Maybe he took things a bit too far. Most of us weren't born to die after there was no use for us.
I wish someone would pick up this series and make more seasons.
I think you're missing the point.
@@megyskermike please explain.
@@chadstrayer8861 the ending was left up to interpretation to what Vincent what do.
@@befano691 it may seem that way with the English dub however if you use the English subtitles you find out that ergo proxy was left to punish the returning humans.
@@gregeddy264 Yes. but the point is that maybe Vincent won at the end and he will live as a human with Re-L and Pino. And that's the point, if someone does more seasons of this anime, it won't be a mystery anymore.
I could never put this anime into words, there was nothing politically correct about this anime, everything in it just seemed very human and natural to me. Down to the development of the characters, how their relationships blossomed and and how they interacted. Eventhough I've never dived into philosophy, you made me realize that these are things that I've spent years of my life thinking about; what trully is good and what trully is evil, what's our purpose for living etc etc. I grew up very religious you see, but I broke away from that upbringing, and althought I kept my faith, I had to deconstruct everything I was taught (because it was horrible and abusive and toxic) and reinvent myself entirely. I "rebelled" I guess, but I've been slowly learning to accept my human nature, accept what is good and is bad, and somehow reconcile myself, because I'm not perfect, sometimes life isn't going to make me happy but that's what life is and that's what living is, and I also can't afford to be a nihilist for the rest of my life, that's just stupid. Life is too short and precious to be wasted on petty nihilism. This anime was soooo complex but yet, ironically enought the basis of it it all is so much more simpler. Moral of the story, don't overcomplicate things, you are here, you exist and you matter, so make a purpose for yourself! Also perhaps this anime is more for mature audiences, I saw it first when I was 16/17, now at 25 this anime is basically the story of my life LOL I adore this anime, trully my fav and a gem! Thank you for this video!
I discovered this anime randomly, watching a video called Lykke li - little bit .
I don’t see anything wrong with things being politically correct. And I don’t see it have any bearing on the show itself. Don’t know what drugs you’re on lol
@@BrownByHonorwhat a needless comment. You’re an annoying being.
@@BrownByHonor Theres nothing wrong with things being polictically? wym by that
It's a real shame philosophy isn't taught as a core curriculum like 2nd to english in the modern era since it has more importance than even mathematics.
How does philosophy have higher importance than mathematics?
@@danielnykvist3221 it can change our thinking pattern and could bring some positive changes
at least that's what I think
I could be wrong
@@muniaisworthit not always for the better though
@@danielnykvist3221 philosophy is all about exercising and analyzing the fundamentals of the truths of this world. It is a realistic discipline that tackles the social construct and its impact. It's all about questioning the essence of anything associated with the universe and earthly systems caused by human nature. I think that philosophy should be made a school subject; It guides our understanding of the world, it is based on rationality, and it helps us to have a grasp of our life principles and beliefs without being irrational. Also, I used to think that the level of philosophical insights of an individual is correlated with one's moral intelligence.
@@zero-db4ykso philosophy is just asking why about everything? I don't need school for that
This was an excellent show. However I wanted more of episode 11. When Ergo Proxy went entirely philosophical in the book store. It was at that point did Ergo Proxy become more than just a show. The mystery & marvel, trial & tribulation of finding who we really are. This show spoke many truths and further entertained my passion for such things. But it abruptly stopped towards the end. Now I'm unsure what to do next. Ergo Proxy I personally give a 7/10.
You are absolutely right I love that episode more than any others. The last two episodes really compliment that episode
@@gregeddy264it gave a really open and close booked feeling
Gonna save this one till after I watch the show all the way through, for real this time.
I just wish there could be more of ergo proxy episodes in 4k. With even more impressive animation. This story has such potential.
This video is a bit egotistical, with your assertion that like half of all popular modern philosopher's are charlatans on the basis that they do not ascribe to your definition of truth, which comes off as a shallow criticism
Modern philosophers suck ass tho, so he’s not wrong
He’s honestly overly thinking this in general.
My fave anime alongside Cowboy Bebob
Ur cool kaori!
Thanks for this, I’m so excited to see how the Jungian lens and Jung himself influences anime and other mediums of thought!

I don't get the point of making humans in Ergo Proxy. Like why?
Yeah it feels a little pointless. Though I think maybe they allude to it being a failsafe in-case humanity is no longer able to return.

I need to go back and give it a proper review!
Ergo proxy is the only anime that after completing made me felt like what was it all about ? Why the hell I swayed through all episodes ? What was the whole point of it ?
It really made me question my life as to how stupidly can I waste any more of my life.
now go watch full metal alchmeist brotherhood
This is not a good portrayal of postmodernism. In so far this varied collection of authors can even be said to have much commonality at all beyond some historical context and influences this would not be it. In so far epistemology is discussed at all so called postmodernists tend to be pragmatists or coherentists (prime example is Richard Rorty which discusses the topic more than anyone else), which isn't reducible to thinking "reality is subjective". Authors like Deleuze even affirm a concept of Noumea. This strawman isn't any more true for postmodernists as it would be for pragmatism or Nietzsche's perspectivsm (which has influenced both so called postmodernists and pragmatists, who then again share a lot of influence with eachother)
So Proxy One is Kami, and Ergo Proxy is Piccolo? Got it! 👍🏾
Vincent, you can say, that. A mix of Piccolo, with P4 Teddie and Marie. Lol
remember towards the very end, when it seemed like the story went crazy and then just ended and it seemed like there should have been more?
the story of what actually went down at the animation studio Manglobe would make an awesome story by itself
I love rewatching this series. It’s very melancholic. Just falling asleep to the intro song and credits song(Radiohead-Paranoid Android), it’s so astral. This and Wolfs Rain hits the emotions hard 😅
Brain hurty 🤕🧠😓
Another genious fact: the trio of main characters has made the same fundamental journey as the true humans of the arc. Leaving their home and returning...

This is a PHENOMENAL VIDEO. I haven’t seen Ergo Proxy so this video was amazing, you deserve more this content IS SO GOOD
So many people watched this video and made a summary about it in the comments that is not accurate at all. Like, what are yall doing?
i miss manglobe, this anime is a childhood fave
This analysis is a masterpiece
Very interesting! Like from Mallorca Spain
Could you summarize the main point/theme the writer wanted to instill in people's minds in a very simple way? I'd like to know. You said it's cogito ergo sum, which I take to mean everything is subjective and that we subjectively make our own truths and that there is no objective morality...
Is this right?
Arbitrary and subjective post modernism is what lead the dome to chaos and ruin.
Yes, I've been waiting for this!
Why even have proxies and humans though?
Couldnt get into ergo proxy, only watched a few eps😓.. Seeing Jung and Nietzsche in the title, maybe retry one day hehe
Some episodes drag a bit, but there’s always a purpose behind what they’re doing.

Thank you for your explanation.
A new anime/manga for me to read and watch
The anime isn't an adaptation of the manga. The manga Ergo Proxy: Centzon Hitchers and Undertaker only served as an inspiration for the anime. Its a completely different story that barely resembles the anime, to such an extent that one would be hard pressed to even notice a link between the two, if it weren't for the fact the title 'Ergo Proxy' is used.
So true!
Watch it twice minimum to appreciate it
Shin Megami Tensei: Wall-e Apocalypse.
Just a few minutes in and im already lost

After watching this I still don't understand Ergo Proxy, lol.
no one can be born as whatever they want, if you no longer have a purpose then youll seek a new purpose to have meaning again, its not hard to understand lmao
@@leviathan9865 If you say so. You think therefore I am.
A purpose designed by God and our own Will that guides us to Truth will be bound by the same structures and people that give us these ideas and tools.
Romdeau was designed to be created and destroyed in a fateful judgement day scenario made in turn by Proxy and that by the Creator. It was that of Will and humanities own disgrace of God that by in large, Romdeau suffers a tragic fate much like the characters who survived off that land.
@acefamilyguy I mean, but why even build it? I guess they allude to it being a bit of a fail-safe but if the point is just to destroy people and their lives, why even have it? I suppose it seemed to me for a bit that another point was to stagnate the effect darwinsim might have on any left behind(which is evidenced by the poisoned people) but it still doesn't seem entirely purposeful

Saving this for after I watch the anime
Im thinking that all the proxys had a human template, maybe the best and brightest that left on the boomarang ships and were possibly the ones who developed the whole system its self. The boomarang ships used traveling close to the speed of lights time dialation and stasisso that the returning humans were tge same that left. The original Vincent may have been in opposition as to the exacts of the system who dod not want all tge death and destruction and may have been done away with and his lover as well leavin Reil and Ergo Vincent as their heirs, they are evidence Original Vincent was right and kinda have a beef to settle with some of the other returning humans that Ergo is to be the Agent of their deaths.Things played out similarly as if thry had never left.
Sigh, can you just get to the point? Why do the proxies wear muse masks? Drop the over-speech.
brilliant good job
Watched it 8 years ago, watched your video and I'm going to do it again. My all top1 anime. :edit you also seem to know your stuff, would appreciate some book recommendations on philosophy
Me going down the fuse rabbit hole.that channel was far ahead of its time and put me on to so much cool shit when i was younger...ergo proxy was so carefully crafted that you couldnt help but be entranced by it .i feel like it transcended the labels that would normally be attached to similar forms of media.i put its story up there with the likes of Nier : Automata or Akira

I finished EP last week for the first time, went with no expectations and now it's competing with GiTS for my #1 favorite anime (and I only watched a handful of those, even fewer I actually regard as great). I have an opportunity to buy physical DVD set, really tempted to do it 😁
Check out witch hunter robin if you liked ergo proxy. It's by the same creative minds 😁
@@MrInuhanyou123 I'm gonna add that to my list, but first things first - I've never watched Cowboy Bebop if you can believe it, so that takes priority.
BTW I've bought that DVD set - it's a polish release, I don't know if it's unique, but kinda looks different from other versions
Pretty well thought out and executed video, I think your painting of Jung as a charlatan is presumptious and false, especially considering you rely on Neitzsche to get across the ideals of the show. And I wouldn't necessarily call Ergo Proxy, the character, an anti-Christ figure, as there is no Christ figure in the show.
I wish you went deeper into archetypes that are present in the show but otherwise this is a good overview of the broad strokes the show makes.
Bit of a reach to claim he called Jung a charlatan. He was talking about the four other philosophers.
He never claimed Jung was a charlatan. He claimed Derrida, Lacan, Husserl and Berkley as charlatans... And I concur. Postmodern navel-gazers.
@@kittykat896 He literally states, with all 4 philosophers including Jung on screen, "If I were to be so bold, all four philosophers are charlatans. Their disfavor in intellectual circles and in the modern world is reflected in Ergo Proxy."
He's making an aside to talk about the real world philosophers and then connecting it back to Ergo Proxy. I just think it's incorrect and hypocritical to use Jung as a model for many of the things stated in the video that are used in the show and then to turn around and say it's all hogwash.
Jung was not on screen when he made the charlatan claim of all 4 of the philosophers represented in the 4 autoreivs (the writers literally gave them the same name of these 4 philosophers, not one of them was named Jung either) which made up the members of the collective in the anime. It was precisely those 4 which I've previously mentioned who were the only ones on the screen, while he was referencing them. Take another watch if you don't believe me; I'll even give the exact timestamp for you 5:16
6:10 not too far from reality, tbh.
You need to edit the title to show that this video contains major spoilers for the show.
