Evangelion mind-fudged anime fans from Japan to the U.S.--OF--A. So sit you 'A' down and watch the analysis of the (Greatest?) anime of all time. Shinji axs like a 'B' -- if you know what I mean -- but it's 'K,' cuz he personifies nihilism and stuff. End of evangelion was a serious drug trip, I called my doctor to make sure I'd be sober enough to go to work the next day...I still called in sick. Neon Genesis Evangelion is some crazy name, does it have a deeper meaning -- or is Anno on the sauce again? Evangelion had a lot of crosses, mecha robots, and anime moments (you know what I'm talking about). Misato's tits, though. Shinji's depression, dough. Gendou peak dad! How disgusting; or is it! YES, it is. BUT WAIT... Dat OP is pretty sick, though. Fly me to the Moon was great, too. Komm Susser Tod -- in all seriousness -- is fantastic!

when doing analysis with japanese modern fictions in manga/anime and video games that have mythical and supranatural elements, most westerners tend to miss one important foundation that came from the authors, that is the religious background in japanese society itself, and for that people need to have some understanding of east asian religions and philosophical thoughts as well, mainly things like buddhism, shintoism and confucianism...
I think in fact, that's where many of the themes in manga/anime that deals with metaphysical comes from, rather than the jungian psychological stuffs that comes from the west.

Eva nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
Evangelion is nothing but a bright shining lie. There is no instant cure for depression as so many on RUclips and Reddit claimed and praised this series to be. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate this series which people treat larger than life, because of how much pain it resurfaces.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
But it only spiraled me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way. No one should have to give up their life to learn their life has meaning. No one. As a believer in an afterlife, I find the fact the people can come back from LCL as offensive, especially when my friend died. You can never come back from death. But that’s what Eva teaches.
Just like Asuka in episode 23, Eva brings up too many painful memories for me to enjoy. And I hated myself for that because others said it cured them of their depression, but it was all I lie, one I nearly threw away my entire life for.
And that’s why I’m afraid of Eva.

FINALLY someone else sees it! The reason that they always wanted to be together but couldn't find out how was partially do to the masculine/feminine dichotomy not working correctly. Asuka wanted Shinji to be masculine and stronger, to hold her (Ex: ep. 22), but Shinji was afraid of Asuka due to her always acting so masculine and aggressive towards him. Obviously it's deeper than that and ties to their pasts, but that's part of it.

    • @Skaevs

It's not a positive thing that he strangles her and shows that he is still immature and lacks control of his masculine urges. He is still immature like a child and resorts to acts of violence to express his withheld masculine urges rather than using his words. While I definitely believe Shinji to have gone through much good character development, I do not consider his choking of Asuka to be a part of it, rather a relapse to bad insecure behavior. A last immature act of need for reassurance before his maturity and accept of his reality and surroundings. I look at the choking as his first response to being back in reality as a last reaction of frustration upon leaving the instrumentality project, he had already confronted his emotions in his mind, while in the LCL, but upon entering the beach was his first time since where he was required to now also act on his thinking and have a relationship with another person, why he emmidiately relapses into bad behavior, as he is immediately reminded of his reasons for disliking people. But I also think he neede reassurance that Asuka was, in fact, real. I don't believe in Jung or Jungtards. It is a very faulty and, today, irrelevant, inconsistent and undefinitive form of psychoanalysis.

Video's like this is why I still believe to this day Evangelion is one of the most important anime ever produced. What other work of animation can create such in depth psychological analysis from its audience. Every person's take on this work is a mirror into the views and feelings of the viewer themselves. You can actually learn alot about a person just from their takeaway from watching the series. Some only see giant robots and explosions, others see a twisted introspective view into the psyche of the series main protagonists. I enjoyed this psychological analysis of the work known as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Bear in mind that Japan is not, has never been, a christian country. When thinkers like Jung point to the Bible as a blueprint for human thought, they are working in a Western canon. Also Jung lived in a time / place when Christianity was near ubiquitous so of course the Bible would be foundational for the psych of just about everyone he knew. We can take that quote as more simple observation than biblical endorsement.
Anno would have interfaced with christian models from a distance. Though I think it’s fair to say he went a little deeper than “cool, distinct aesthetic”, it is strange to use Christian mysticism itself to unpack Eva.
Anno obviously pulled from classic psychologists like Jung, but I think he cared about them in so far that they explained behaviors, patterns, problems, and pointed towards a way out.
It’s important to look at what Anno emphasizes. He talks complex ideas, but simple values. I think he would view mysticism, and Peterson-esque evaluations of the world, as a distraction from what matters (small and domestic things, ultimately).
imo Evangelion’s strength was how it immersed us in Shinji. And how it outrageously turned a toy commercial into the raw stuff of life. Walking through the horror of self acceptance and stunted psyches.
Maybe I’m trying to say that what distinguishes Anno as an auteur (and Eva as art) is pretty unglamorous?

    • @HeavyReign12
      @HeavyReign12 3 года назад +13

I think you can use almost any ancient mythos to unpack Eva. Perhaps Anno was familiar with the archetypes in religions more commonly associated with Japan. It's my belief now that many of the stories that are in the bible are much much older. Every religion is a unique race of people expressing cosmic truth. Or if you really want to get out there, every religion had a common ancestor. Then the fact that he utilized Christian imagery to me means it's the best mythos to unpack Eva.

      @HeavyReign12 3 года назад +8

@@shakugan73 I'm going to go with Anno on the idea that this is all up for interpretation. Most artists shy away from explicitly saying why or what they made. I don't know if I correctly voiced my opinion, I know what Eva is about per se in the since it's a reflection of our own commoner struggles. But Shinji's struggles are expanded to at a biblical level. Isn't that what many religious stories are in holy books? Metaphors for our earthly and psychological struggles? I give Anno the genius card in the fact that he was able to incorporate the lore with the "message" of Eva. You could argue any story is about some sort of issue and the lore is the back drop, that's basically every story. It's the same stories told over and over. What I meant with my comment is for whatever reason, Anno used a western/Abrahamic mythos to tell his story. I'm saying all religions are very similar in their archetypes, the whole collective unconscious thing. Anno is probably familiar with other eastern religions that use similar archetypes. But you're saying it's strange to use the mythos that Anno used to tell his story as a way to unpack the themes of the show. I'm saying I disagree. I know Eva is about it's characters, which every story is? Seems weird to clarify it this time.
I'm not sure why so many are so quick to shoot any of this stuff down. Like the idea that the lore can be incorporated into the shows message and that Anno just willy nilly used religious symbolism.
I personally have never felt more understood by another human being than when I watched Eva. Maybe I don't have a collective correct interpretation of the story, but the show means the world to me and I believe that Anno is either a genius or incredibly lucky in his use of symbolism. Now with that said, I don't disagree with everything you said, I just think if we're going to do a deep dive like this video did, then the symbolism in the show is the best option there is.

@@HeavyReign12 Glad the show also resonated for you. Regardless of who is “right” here, we can agree on its quality.
As a big art buff, I hesitate to interpret through a heavy lens like Christian mysticism because I think it can retroactively color the work. This video recontextualizes Eva, by my view, using many (many) assumptions.
(full disclosure, i find that a lot of the ideas / traditions that he mentioned boil down to pretty reductive and reactionary thinking. I don’t really like to see Eva associated with that either)
,,, i agree that good stories match their lore and their themes. I also think the huge, conspiratorial takes can divert attention from those themes. And I think it’s very likely Eva is not a “good story” so much as it is a good piece of art

it's the latter. Jungian analysis is a field of study that self-perpetuates - it's so broad and espouses such an encompassing worldview that you can force *anything* to be a secret gnostic parable. the very idea of a collective unconscious is unfalsifiable and self-affirming, because any argument against it can be rationalised as an expression of the unconscious. no doubt, some of these allusions are intentional, and some of them may have cropped up unintentionally, but it's not through a "collective unconscious", just passive influence. humans are self-similar, so we share similar traits, but Jungian psychology actively ignores numerous counter examples of faiths, traditions, and beliefs that don't support its structure. gnostic and jungiang practitioners constantly seek out evidence to further their belief in that framework

You don't need to go as far as Gnosticism to understand that LCL is embryonic fluid. EVA pilots are fulfilling the Oedipal myth as they pilot it. When the EVA went berserk, Shinji returned to the unconscious and literally met his mother again.

The most interesting part of all of this is that all those parallels to Jungian theory are most likely fully organic and not planned at all since the show's plot was created kinda on the spot episode by episode, that goes to show the real emergence of uncounscious symbols and mythology on the plot. Same unplanned "unconscious" proccess of creating can be seen in Majora's mask per example (some sequences were recreations of the producer's dreams) or of course, to a much higher extent on stuff such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra or the Red Book.

Very good analysis. I might suggest reading Sanford L Drob’s ‘ Symbols of the Kabbalah: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives’ and ‘ Kabbalistic Metaphors: Jewish Mystical Themes in Ancient and Modern Thought’ which contain a treasure trove of information on how the Kabbalah, the Christian Kabbalah and Gnosticism are all part of ancient man’s attempt to develop an understanding of the human psyche using neo-plantonic philosophy, amongst other fascinating topics (the two books act as companions to each other and make many references to one another). If you are looking for more of a comparative philosophy / psychology / religion covering of the topic, Kabbalistic Metaphors is probably the book to start with. If you want more of a Jungian psychological deep dive into the Kabbalah, Symbols of the Kabbalah covers that aspect.
When you mention Asuka and Shinji as Yin and Yang / two complementary personalities seeking reunification I am very much reminded of coincidentia oppositorum or the coincidence (unity) of opposites which plays a heavy part in the Lurianic Kabbalah as the reunification of the divine self through the self actualization of the individual (tikkun ha olam); an effort to restore divine order / reunify the mind of God, who after contracting divine ego (tzimtzum) in order to create the world, caused primordial man (Adam Kadmon) to shatter (shevirat ha kelim) leaving the world in a state of spiritual incompleteness which only can be restored through reunification of the broken psyche of primordial man. It is impossible to summarize in its entirety here, but I always find it fascinating that the symbols Anno chose were just a bit too on the nose for him to just have used them because they look “cool”, like a lot of the Evangelion community unfortunately try to argue.

You then procced to lean your in depth review into it when the creator himself likely has no knowledge of any of the facts mentioned, because he quite frankly didn't care and again... only used it because it looked cool.
We also known that in the mid 90s with what would today be considered a mild fan backlash, the creator rushed to make a new, much darker and moody, ending...
Nothing says "I have a story to tell and I put a lot of thought into it" quite like changing the ending on a whim just to please the teen anxs of the fans.
The creator himself is just a ped that at the time at least was suffering from depression after having been caught with 'kiddy material' if you know what I mean.

Here's the thing reader, gnotistics I bet my ENTIRE life they have not ONCE read the bible, old AND new they probably heard famous stories from the bible and put their own ideology into their version of the bible, they are not based on reality whereas God is based on both immaterial and material world I can debunk their entire system by 3 arguments that Jesus himself says and they even admit that Jesus is part of the creator God, first Jesus is the God of the Old Testament he says this explicitly "Before Abraham was, I am" which means Yahweh, where does that come from? The Angel Of the Lord who spoke to Moses when Moses asked "who should I say that sent me" God replied "I am that I am, tell them 'I am' sent you" so already right there debunks their whole ideology, second, "Can Satan cast out Satan? For a house divided cannot surely survive" why would God put a curse on the Devil for leading astray man if that God is the devil, now you may ask "that God wasn't the devil it was the demiurge" in which I reply "There was no God before me nor has there ever been after" and "when they sacrifice to their false gods they're sacrificing to demons" so clear if the God in the OT was the "demiurge" it would've been a demon and how would it make sense that a demon cursed the prince of demons, the Gnostics have no biblical basis on anything and when they don't have a biblical basis on anything they don't have a basis for anything and I feel bad for them because genuinely they are not based on reality at all, and no offense but thinking the collective unconscious is God is just totally wrong if God has the qualities to love for how can one love without being aware of love? Also the reason why we have all these similarities guess what? The Bible talks about "Gentiles know his law without ever seeing his written law" and God put his spirit in everyone but will put a blind on them so they cannot see also one last thing Logos is referring to Jesus part of God not God as a whole, "in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word is God" the word is Jesus because it says "Word became flesh"

I always interpreted the title of series as ‘Gospel of Rebirth’ or ‘Story / Tale of a New Beginning’; “Neon Genesis” being a Greek analogue to the Italic “Renaissance” which translates to rebirth (considering Anno even titled the two movies that summarized the events of the series as Death and Rebirth it seems that he at the very least had that in mind).
Although I do agree that Evangelion most literally translates to Good News, Eu meaning good and angelos meaning message / messenger, I think story or tale or just leaving it as Gospel sounds better the the ear, but that is just my preference.

Genuine question: You frame Shinji's possessing feminine traits and Asuka possessing masculine traits as negative things. Whether you believe it is the perspective of the show or not, I'm not really sure if you're supportive of the idea that women should be "subservient" and men have to been "self-possessed" and "confident?" If so, I'm a little confused why Asuka wouldn't want to reject the feminine traits that you described as "less desirable." Of course she would want to reject those things, if they are less desirable. Are they only less desirable because they are possessed by a boy?
If that is really your perspective, maybe reading less Jordan Peterson would do you good. Also, I think Anno has more compassion and tenderness for Asuka than Jordan Peterson ever would, and the idea that he would look on her smugly and condescending like that meme implies is kind of wild to me. I think the way Kaji treats her is pretty close to how Anno views her.
I'd argue that while Shinji is indeed emotionally stunted and has the psyche of a much younger child, he is still a child as a 14-year-old boy. The things he goes through would traumatize any adult, never mind a teenager. He acts passively because he has no agency in his life, and he sees no reason to try. Asuka is argumentative and aggressive as a coping mechanism for the trauma that she's endured of losing her mother and having to be a literal child soldier, and less because her femininity and masculinity are out of balance. She is desperate to seem in control because she has no control over her life. She desperately wants to be an adult, because all the adults around her control her, with little consideration for her wellbeing, and she believes that if she is an adult she can grasp onto some of that control for herself. This is why she throws herself at Kaji. She believes that if he sees her as a sexual option, that means she is an adult. But he (and Anno) knows that she is a child and wishes to preserve her innocence, and even though he knows that it will hurt her, rejecting her is the only aspect of her innocence he has the ability to preserve.
Shinji learns from Asuka's passion and drive, which helps him gain more confidence and improves his synch ratio even above what Asuka achieved, which destroys Asuka's self-confidence, because she has established her entire sense of self on being useful to the adults who continue to exploit her, and when she is no longer useful to them, she is gutted. She is disposable.

Everybody had explanation of whole series in last episodes, maybe low cost ones, but it was an explanation. Um uhh this ending is total shit 🤓. Anno gave you EoE to show more action, to remove this interruption of the sequence of events, to give EVEN MORE EXPLANATIONS. But uhhmm this ending is too ambiguous 🤓 You all had one job to reflect on yourself. Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Misato and others... all of them had a different story to tell, different advice for you. Everything what's inside of these fan "explanations" has been told in Evangelion, but in simplified language, language of casual viewer, not a fucking psychology professor. I'm not surprised of that Anno doesn't like Eva's fandom. He tried to tell us how to everything starts inside us, in our mind. He tried to tell us that, we have to love, and accept ourselves because no one will do it for us. But instead of listening to him, fandom did the opposite. Embraced escapism, labeled itself as the one of the most depressed communities ever. That's kinda disappointing... I guess.

26 episodes and 2 movies (Originally)...and the message is you must embrace/love yourself...
The Pains & Joy's are the necessities of the journey of self-discovery (Individuality)…
Yet, it is in our journey of self-discovery we also seek out the the opposite of ourselves, the inversion, The One We Deem Our Equal in many respects (Our Partner)
The one whom is the both the missing piece & one whom we are compatible with in order to maintain our individuality and, through the unity of our partner, ensure its continued existance...
Love is giving someone the means to destroy you and trusting that they will not use it…
Finding love does not automatically make everything solved, it just means you have someone to share your burdens with...
It may be disgusting...it may make us sick, BUT it ensures/maintains our individuality

Freudian theory obviously takes center stage in Evangelion psychological discussion because of the more direct parallels (i.e. the desire to return to the womb and the Oedipus complex), so it's very interesting to watch a Jungian approach.

I enjoy seeing analysis of Eva, and this honestly does a good job, but just once I'd like someone to remind Eva's audience that it can be interpreted in multiple ways, just like any text. For example, I've never seen a genre focused analysis of Evangelion, but I've seen multiple psychology based ones. It's a shame because Eva holds up from any angle of analysis.

There is an untouchable, truer world, but not in a religious sense. It's the objective world. Embracing nihilism, you can find higher knowledge that is closer to that "world without perspective":
    - There are no opposites
    - There is no free will, we are just chain reactions.
    - The world happens in the only way it can, so everything is predestinated.
    - There is no chance.
    - Nobody deserves anything.
    - Nothing is divine.

O shiiyitteee thats why Kaworu took Shinjis DSS choker. Thats symbolism to Christ taking the cross then dying to save humanity.
Also on 3.0 Kaworu sat silently to figure out why there are two spears of Longinus because he was trying to figure out what his purpose is. Then later when he did he felt he was foresaken when he was cast down from being the 1st Angel now to the 13th Angel
I think now I have an idea what the theme is for the last Evangelion. Its Shinji coming to terms to who he is,what he has done, his sins and most likely he will be reborn to shed away his mortal body.
There will be an Atonement that animators will show during the climax of the film.

Not saying I completely agree with this approach( I doubt they went as far with it as you did) BUT peopled do take the religious symbolism for granted. They assume that every moment in Eva's religious symbol is superficial when it's pretty clear that at certain moments they are using it with meaning in mind. Just because they chose Christian imagery because it looks cool does not mean they can not be intentional with it. The most obvious example is probably misato cross in both the originals and rebuilds. Also, FYI I'm pretty sure Anno never said that the religious symbols were inconsequential. That came from someone on his staff and not him. It's mostly just fans repeating the bad info. If I'm wrong please let me know with a quote.
Note: this why I don't like this approach btw: The Gnosticism stuff is always interesting but people get tunnel vision on it and go overboard. For example, you say it was Shinji animus/mother that whisked him away and that what bought him back in ep 16 and that this was bad BUT there is a bit you skipped there. We see a child Shinji and his mother. His mother ask him "are you ready" and we see child Shinji respond. It very vague/abstract but given what follows after it becomes clear what happened. His mother gave him a choice and he chose to come back. No one has subsumed anyone. His first words after coming back was "I just wanted to see you again" or see them don't remember, to Misato. The point is he wanted to return and his mom helped him. It didn't really play out the way you described. And in hindsight, the scene was really a foreshadowing of instrumentality stuff later on and an introduction to talking angels/weird mind trips. Anyway, he was being proactive in ep 16 ending unlike what you conclude.
ep 16 ending shinji" I just wanted to see you again"
EOE Shinji " I know my feeling were real at the time...blah blah don't remember the rest but basically, he had the same response he had in ep 16.
The difference between the two scenes is Shinji hasn't figure himself out yet but he still has the same general feelings of wanting others.
    Good vid though.
