I'm glad I found my people. I always felt I was the only person on earth who enjoyed this series. I'm happy it's not as unknown or unloved as I thought it was.
I think Vincent's arc and struggles is one of the things that really cements Ergo Proxy as a great character story for me, and its really impressive that there is a main duo (Vincent and Re-L) which I imagine is harder to write and balance out than just a singular main character.
That's nothing to feel bad about. I remember I got really confused the first time they kept talking about "perception" and the meaning of consciousnesses. In fact I think my brain started kind of tuning the higher brow lines out and instead focused on Re-L and Vincent. I found the show to be quite enjoyable when this occurred even if I did "watch it wrong".
Oh man, episode 20 was the greatest in the show and actually is a major plot resolve for the journey! Did you notice how the memories began to return to Ergo specifically after the episode 20? Well, I can explain why. I would argue that ep 20 is absolute pinnacle of abstract storytelling, it does (along with following twists) turn the story and meaning of the journey complitely from what viewers originally think. More so, episode 20 shows us exactly how Vincent's memory supression mechanism works inside his mind.
I did not notice the memories as you mention, and now that I think of it, episode 20 is quite sound and good, even if I dislike a bit of the dialogue in it. Correct me if I'm wrong (I very well might be) but episode 20 serves as a sort of mental/metaphysical resolution to compliment the physical resolution of the journey to Mosk. Where the previous episodes show the physical results, i.e Mosk is a ruined dome and the group has to return to Romdau, episode 20 shows Vincent kind of returning to himself mentally. Its an exploration of Vincent's subconscious repression and compartmentalization of his true identity and the conflict between the old, (early episodes) false "Vincent Law the ideal Citizen" and the new, correct "Vincent Law, Ergo Proxy" . I don't dislike the concept of episode 20 and think it definitely has a place in the series, I just disliked some of the dialogue as it felt a little to high concept to me. Again the episode is objectively good, its just sometimes words get too big for my brain.

"Engaging" is truly the best way to describe this show. Absolutely agree with you that one does not need a PhD to enjoy it, because the show presents a series of philosophical ("religious" would've been a better word here) problems into stories and engaged the viewer to sense the dreads that the characters were going through. How often do we hear philosophers discuss the topic "Do we really want the truth?" in such an understandable way? I would go as far as saying that the pretentious ones are not the production of this show, but the philosophy PhDs. I loved the way you pictured the 3 main character as a family and how each one of those matured during the journey to mosque. Although, saying that the show is about 3 young adults achieving enlightenment through their own efforts would've been a disservice to a very well crafted story like this. The entire plot is really about the struggle of reconciliation with the truth and who Vincent truly is. "What was once divided must again become whole."
I was always impressed by the character writing because, to me at least, it meant the series was still really engaging and interesting even if I failed to pick up 100% of all the details and plot points. To this day, I think Ergo Proxy is a great example of how good character writing and growth can ease indirect story telling and keep it engaging, even if the viewer isn't initially looking for all the little details.
1/3 - Cyberpunk noir 2/3 - Family boating 3/3 - random bullshit go brrrr Last third was disappointing as fuck. Spoiler After two straight episodes of hallucinations we arrive at romdo and skip to a fucking apocalypse for no reason.
I will admit that Ergo Proxy does accelerate near the end, and while I find Pino's dream episode harmless/enjoyable enough I kinda hate the Vincent/Re-L one (I think its episode 20) as I find it to be the most egregious case of 'higher concepts discussion' taking over. Usually this only occurs for about 2-3 minutes in a random conversation every now and again, but since the whole of episode 20 is predicated on it, it does drag and feel a bit frustrating. And while I didn't mind the ending, you of course are entitled to your own opinion, I will admit it seems a tad "sudden" seeing as Raul's actions post assuming complete power and their consequences are not too thoroughly elaborated on. We are briefly told of the ADW Project and are left to assume it somehow helped destroy Romdou, but what it is is never really explained, other than (if I remember correctly) "genetic experimentation".
@@obscureanimememories6697I loved the re l/ Vincent subconscious episode I thought it was the shows best attempt at evangelion esq psychological episodes loved as more and more gets revealed as we wait for closure on what happened when they got to romdeau and more and more is revealed until we piece together at the same time re l/vincet what is happening
Correction: Proxy One was visible throughout different episodes, though, a background. He was present in the first episode where he was observing the city; he was seen Vincent's memory dream in episode 3(Ergo is a special clone of Proxy One and has his memories and appearance) and this means that PO was potentially watching Mosk's destruction, he met Vincent when he went to library (to remind Vincent of the mission), given an actual name in episode 15, and it is implied that Swan is Proxy One attempting to manipulate Vincent further. Physically, he makes an appearance when he kills Donav Mayer and waits for the end.
Oops! I always figured that the first two those appearances were some sort of mental thing for Vincent. Like he was talking more to himself than an actual other person in episode 3 and the library episode. I remember Proxy One appearing in episode 15, and I was always split on whether Swan was Proxy One or a different Proxy with her own agenda (I've heard several theories). Again though, I don't have the biggest brain, so its very possible I missed some things while re-watching the series. I still Love it though!
I have a few questions. Was PO the one that killed Amnesia and wrote awakening on the wall and on the mirror in ep1 or is it me mixing things up? Also I think you can see him in the train in ep3, you see PO standing in the flashback, when it ends it fades into reality, he is still there and you can see him briefly exit the train.
It really is underrated and its a shame it sometimes gets dismissed simply because it tries to focus on 'higher ideas' sometimes. Dismissing it for such a reason is odd to me because while the 'higher concepts' can be both interesting and confusing, they are not the central draw in my eyes. The central draw is the evolution of the characters and their bonds, the feeling of humanity shining even in the darkness
@@obscureanimememories6697 Hi, I watched your vid on the show, I disagree on some things you explained plot-wise and theme-wise, it was a good review. I think its philosophical/ideological/sociopolitic themes and allegories (monologues/dialogues and visuals) make the meanings improve the story and episode 20 is very important for the last three episodes because it shows what would've happened if Re-L captured Ergo Proxy. Also, Proxy One created Romdeau and Vincent never had memories (Proxy One confirmed it in the last episode, the memories in Amnesia's Room were Proxy One's), Proxy One appeared in not only the last episode but he also appeared in ep 1, 3, 11, 17, 18, 21 and beginning of ep 22 (picture in ep 15). I know only 2 things about Ergo Proxy, the image of Rie-l holding a gun (we all know which one) and the Netflix summary. I expected this as a sci-fi action that tells a story like I Robot and Detroit: Become Human So i really don't know what to make of when the Proxies showed up, they weren't robots, not even evolved humans, not even gods?? I'm not too familiar with the netflix summary, but I now some of the printed summaries of this series on websites are either a bit vague or inaccurate, which I find oddly funny. As for the proxies, they're pretty cool and as far as "official Lore" goes, I think they are artificially created creatures, created by man to sustain domes until the sun comes back. This very important piece of information is glossed over in an exposition dump somewhere in episode 15 (It honestly took me a couple watches to catch it, don't feel bad). There is definitely quite a bit to unpack, but I do recommend finishing the series if it interests you. Its certainly niche and experimental, but honestly you don't really need to understand all the "high level" stuff to enjoy the series. I personally found a lot of the segments where characters discuss Lacan and stuff a tad excessive, confusing, or opaque, but none of that stuff is needed to enjoy the story as a whole. Honestly I kind of ignored some of the super philosophical bits and focused more on the actual journey and bonds of Re-L, Vincent, and Pino which I found to be the strong point of the series. I hope you enjoy!
I will say that a lot of subbing for this show is done poorly, and theres only a handful of sources of subs are actually accurate or even helpful in understanding the plot. I wish I could tell you which ones exactly are the best, all I know is the Aniwave one has helpful little tidbits of explanations for certain phrases or words that non-Japanese audiences may not understand, as well as correct spelling of many of the lore-related characters, concepts, and objects, such as "Romdeau", "Re-l", "Autoreiv", "Cogito" Virus, etc. I feel like this made my viewing of the show a lot more enjoyable as I could tell early on why the Cogito virus was called as such, whereas if it was butchered then I would simply find the Descartés references confusing at first.
That would explain some of the confusion about the series, I didn't know there were issues with some of the subtitled versions. Does the dub have any similar issues? I've seen it dubbed and thought it relatively follow-able, though did note that important information was sometimes said at seemingly unimportant times and terms weren't always elaborated upon.
