    David marks I think it's amazing your whole history with the Beach Boys and I'm so glad that they asked you to be on the 50th reunion tour, I always say that you are the 1 person who knows the Wilson family story from the very beginning, thank you for your interviews, I know that they are accurate accounts of the Beach Boys story. God Bless you David Marks.

    Really enjoyed The Lost Beach Boy, David. Never knew you hung around with Warren Z. Too cool.Hey man -- you came out the other side mostly in one piece. Outstanding! Mike G in Temecula

    Without David Marks, I don't think The Beach Boys would have existed. At first, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine were playing folk music with harmonizing, never intending to do rock n roll. But David, who lived across the street, was playing rock n roll on his electric guitar, in the style of Chuck Berry and early surf music, like The Ventures. Carl Wilson liked what David was playing, so he learned to play electric guitar this way too, and the two boys practiced together a lot. Brian noticed them, and tried combining David and Carl's rock n roll guitars with harmonizing - and that became the signature sound of The Beach Boys.

    I like David. His guitar is unique, metallic sounding. A driving rhythm. Murray had Carl do the leads.

    One of the greatest "what ifs" of pop music history--right up there with "what if" Pete Best wasn't pushed out of the Beatles for Ringo Starr, or Syd Barrett out of Pink Floyd in favor of Dave Gilmour. What if Dave Marks had remained a Beach Boy. I'm sure there would have still been a Pet Sounds or a Good Vibrations, and he might have contributed greatly to those efforts, and he's probably still kicking himself that he didn't. But then, there might not have been a "Help Me Rhonda" without Al Jardine, just as there wouldn;t have been a "Help From My Friends" without Ringo

      exactly what i was thinking don't forget stuart sutcliffe in the beatles, or brian jones not being a part of post 60s rolling stones records

      Don't forget that, briefly, David and Al were both in the band when Al rejoined. So there's still "Help Me Rhonda", "Sloop John B", etc. with David around.

    David Marks, the Jewish Beach Boy! He played on the first five albums but Al Jardine pushed him out after completing college.

    • @Stephanjnj
      @Stephanjnj 6 лет назад +6

      Jardine had plans to become a dentist but did not complete college. In late '63 Marks quit in a huff after a dispute with manager Murray WIlson, and embarked on a solo career that went nowhere. By then Jardine had been filling in for Brian as bassist on a number of live shows, and with Marks out of the band he returned as a permanent member.

      Al did not push him out. For a brief period both Al and Dave toured together when Brian took a hiatus from touring.

      @@Stephanjnj you’re damn right. It’s all Murray’s fault for creating tensions with David. Murry was an authoritarian when he managed The Beach Boys.

      He was not religious and only his father Elmer Marks was Jewish. His mother Jo Ann was an Italian Catholic. So technically David is not Jewish. 😮

    David Marks is a better guitarist than Carl Wilson if you ask me and that's saying a lot. David should have become Carl's permanent replacement.
