Agreed! He had the best voice on That's Why God Made the Radio! Carl used to be the best vocalist. Brian was great in the 60s. Mike has slipped a bit. But Al is still fantastic! Possibly a better singer than he was in the 60s!
One or two negative comments suggesting Al is "drawn out" . Well he is going back almost 60 years ! I am pretty sure I will have to have thinking time to recall events of 60 years ago. If its too much for you , simply turn it off. I for one find it very interesting and also a privilege to listen to such an icon of pop music who has not been ravaged by drink and drugs.
Al is sort of like the George Harrison of the Beach Boys, the quiet Beach Boy. He got overshadowed by Brian's genius, Mike's charisma, Carl's voice, Denny's sex appeal.
Saw Brian and Al and their great band at Newcastle upon Tyne England. 29th May 2016. They were excellent. Al's voice is still strong. A great show . I feel so lucky to have been there.
I saw the BBs in 1964 in Sacramento where they recorded their live album. They played two nights. I don't know whether or not the one I attended was the live album or that they may have taken songs from each of the performance. I've never heard any of the background of those concerts. One thing I remember was when Mike Love sang Monster Mash, they put a green light on him throughout the song. They sounded exactly like their records, which is kind of odd because it was The Wrecking Crew who played the instruments in their songs because the band wasn't deemed good enough to do the recordings. I think Brian was the only one who was allowed in the recording studio, if I'm remembering correctly. If you want to watch an interesting behind-the-scenes documentary, watch The Wrecking Crew movie. Not sure, but it may be on RUclips by now. Fascinating.
🙏🏼✌️🙏🏼 just so you know... I grew up with Elvis, didn't like him, the Kingston Trio, that I did and still do like. but it was the Beach Boys and surfing music that caught my attention... thanks 😊 I still like it... and the beach. from the beach over here in Arizona mi casa es su casa, hermano 🌶
Al Jardine talking about how terrible High School was in California was in'tresting; I attended schools in Northern NH, and they were Wonderful years for me (1966-70, maybe '71)
Whenever I see Al or Brian interviewed nowadays, there always seems to be a look of sadness in their eyes. It can't be easy talking about the 'early days' and the happy times when Dennis and Carl were there. Time goes so fast, but their sound will last forever. Thank you BBs for all the sounds you made!
Love to hear this kind of background information. How ordinary kids become superstars. They worked hard and developed their own style and formula for success.
We saw Al with family and friends at the Cerritos performing arts center on October 21, 2022. It was a great concert/performance by all - Al & Matt, Carnie and her husband, Wendy, don’t remember the names of the Bass, drums, and keyboard. They sang the Beach Boy classics and the daughters of Brian The venue was wonderful, great seats close to the stage. A happy memory, would do it again if we could
This video is invaluable. Cool to think that Al Jardine and Brian Wilson would be singing "Tijuana Jail"on their football team's bus. Nice to know that Timothy was also heavily influenced by the trio. Great stories.
OH THOSE LOVELY MARTIN GUITARS and Nicks old Tenor Martin is one of my three fav sounding guitars so would love to just touch it his Tenor Martin is why I so love the song Chilly Winds
At 15 minutes or so what Al is describing with the color representing musical sounds is called synesthesia. It’s very rare but it usually found in musicians and most certainly creative artists.
Al's comments about his influences could have been spoken word for word by me and thousands of others who grew up with the Trio back then. I met Al at a Dylan and Dylan concert (Mortensen, Thomas, Rosen) in Carmel about a year ago. Wonderful, funny, talented man.
I met with Al in Durham, NC in 1982. We had a very nice meeting after a BB concert at Duke. He was very down to earth and we shot the breeze for an evening.
When the Beach Boys first came out, my parents really liked the Kingston Trio and we kids heard their records a lot. I remember sitting by the record player in the living room listening to Beach Boys and my Mom walked by and said something like - "hey sound really good. They might become as big as the Kingston Trio, but maybe the Trio will be remembered as the better group in the long run." I had no idea that Al idolized the Trio until I saw this video. Very cool.
Very interesting. Didn´t know Al was such a big fan of The Kingston Trio. They were huge (first 5 albums reaching no.1 I think). Thanks for everything Al, you´re great !!
@@StevenJRoosa Brian, in particular, was influenced by The Four Freshmen and taught the BBs this kind of harmony, which is why they themselves had such great harmonies.
Loved the Beach Boys, Al Jardine. Hate to see what happened to the group.. Sure wish that Brian, Carl, and Dennis had a hell of life with their farther. But your music 🎶 🎵 will live on...
Yes... the reason why I never advanced in my guitar playing: my parents bought me a Stella! And, YES, it was like piano wire - my fingers would bleed! I hated that thing!!
I always thought that "409" was their first. I, too, was a huge "Tom Dooley" fan. I was in the 6th grade. In high school, 1959-1965, I spent from '63- '65 daydreaming about playing jobs my brother and I had booked for the upcoming weekend, each week. These guys are great people. I sincerely hope they know Jesus as Savior, because I sure would like to play music with them and of course, for their own sakes ...
Al you sing better than you ever did brother. I mean that. You sound so good man! Tim love your bass and vocals too. Still playing fender and carvin respectively? (Me too) great work y'all. Would love to jam sometime... Steven
Timothy did a song on the Beach Boys release album, "Stars and Bars" or "Stars and Stripes" that had country singers doing the lead vocals. There is a video here showing some of those sessions with Willie Nelson, Lori Morgan ,etc. Nice mix! ( I think Stars and Bars was a Neil Young album. LOL )
Nice video, thanks for posting, brings back memories. Schmidt has talent and pipes, but can't Take it to the Limit the way Randy did. Wish Henley didn't become such a selfish old codger in his old age-he keeps taking down music by Randy, Bernie and Don Felder-we can't even listen to the famous Walsh-Felder Hotel Calif. guitar duo anymore. Greedy Henley forgets who the music is for, who paid for it, how much we enjoy the original Eagles tunes. The moron will probably order Walsh and Schmidt off his lawn next.
The man's name is Schmit, not Schmidt. He;'s only a member of the most popular American band ever, so I can see how easy the mistake is to make. Jesus.
I should imagine they first met in the seventies when Eagles and The Beach Boys played concerts together. Later Timmy sang on The Beach Boys Stars & Stripes LP (and he sang with Brian Wilson on a TV concert in 1998 for Wilson's Imagination LP, although Al wasn't involved in that LP or TV special)
Oh, the bad words, is this a trigger for you? Yes, my opinion. I have more, after surfing and silly songs (CFG chords) and some excellent harmonies, they did squat. From the dune buggy to the beatles/stones/Jackson/ etc., they were lost, replacing band members. The. Holland Album is trash. So my opinion, and do not use foul language you looser.
endlessly sympathetic! Al speaks out so honestly and softly at the the same time. As a long-time Beach Boys fan I am very thankful for this interview.
always loved Als voice even now he sounds great top guy.
Agreed! He had the best voice on That's Why God Made the Radio! Carl used to be the best vocalist. Brian was great in the 60s. Mike has slipped a bit. But Al is still fantastic! Possibly a better singer than he was in the 60s!
Al jardine top musician top man and can still sing

Well said, L G; well said ...
He's told the story thousands of times. Who wouldn't be drawn out!
I'll be 69 in 2 Days 10/21 /1953 thing's aren't quite as sharp as they used to be ☮️
I totally agree with you..L G.
Al is my fav
Al Jardine is AWESOME!!
Al and Tim are such cool laid back dudes.
The humble guy that sang"Help Me Rhonda,ok he is so humble, sweet guy ,Al Jardine,I'd love to him to start singing this .
Al is sort of like the George Harrison of the Beach Boys, the quiet Beach Boy.
He got overshadowed by Brian's genius, Mike's charisma, Carl's voice, Denny's sex appeal.
Thank you Al. You are a great singer.
The Beach Boys were my first concert in '64 and I took guitar lessons from Timothy's dad. They're famous, I'm humbled still.
Saw Brian and Al and their great band at Newcastle upon Tyne England. 29th May 2016. They were excellent. Al's voice is still strong. A great show . I feel so lucky to have been there.

great interview, AL! I love hearing about your love for the Kingston Trio..

The band disintegrating over feuds with Mike Love can't help.
Agreed!
Somebody always has to bitch about Mike Love.
Because Mike Love is a big league asshole...
Their music will live forever
A beach boy and a eagle marvellous
Invaluable, beautiful interview.
Love to hear this kind of background information. How ordinary kids become superstars. They worked hard and developed their own style and formula for success.
Lovely to see these two together two huge gentlemen
Love TBS.💗

I’ve run into him a couple of times in Big Sur over the years. Very nice family.
lucky you if you ever do again tell him hi from a fan

The Kingston Trio had great harmonies.
Anyone see Al perform with Brain lately? Fantastic vocals ! Exceptional !
+Kevin Dunn I did he still got it!
+Kevin Dunn I am going in October, Salt Lake City. I am so stoked!! Taking my 19 year old son.
northern light Lucky you! I hope you have a good time! I wish I could join you. Hope you enjoy the music.
who's Brain?
it's a typo
Timothy sang "Caroline No" on the Beach Boys Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 album.

It is rare. Interesting to learn about. Kind of natural psychedelic
Love this video.
Me Too!! 🇺🇸❤🤍💙🇺🇸
From There to Back Again is his finest moment. Obviously it’s highly “produced” …but he’s not a kid anymore… Regardless, it’s an amazing record.
Al's comments about his influences could have been spoken word for word by me and thousands of others who grew up with the Trio back then. I met Al at a Dylan and Dylan concert (Mortensen, Thomas, Rosen) in Carmel about a year ago. Wonderful, funny, talented man.

Dont usually get Al Jardine alone in an interview. It is nice to hear his perspective of the Beach Boys history.
beach boys and eagles is a good combination
Al is the greatest!
When the Beach Boys first came out, my parents really liked the Kingston Trio and we kids heard their records a lot. They might become as big as the Kingston Trio, but maybe the Trio will be remembered as the better group in the long run." I had no idea that Al idolized the Trio until I saw this video. Very cool.
I wish when I'll be his age I will be just as cool, realistic, and soft, looking back on what happened in my life!
Very interesting. Didn´t know Al was such a big fan of The Kingston Trio. They were huge (first 5 albums reaching no.1 I think). Thanks for everything Al, you´re great !!
Wilson brothers grew up imitating The Four Freshmen. Everly Brothers.
@@StevenJRoosa Brian, in particular, was influenced by The Four Freshmen and taught the BBs this kind of harmony, which is why they themselves had such great harmonies.

But your music 🎶 🎵 will live on...
The Beach Boys did a self-tribute country record in '96 called 'stars & stripes' and schmidt sang on it.
Didn't know that, thanks!
Al ,, you with your Tepee residence in Big Sur,,,,, Oh my how fun we had!!
Eugenia Hoffman 🤨😀
Love you Al...! Nice spirit...I wish I could be a California girl...
yeaaaa for Al
Yes... the reason why I never advanced in my guitar playing: my parents bought me a Stella! And, YES, it was like piano wire - my fingers would bleed! I hated that thing!!
Stella guitars...bottom of the pile. LOL
also just both being in the business for better than 40 years..it s a small music world......

OH AL I know the feeling about how bad high school was HATED IT
Richie Cunningham looks pretty good for his age. Wonder how the Fonz is doing
Al you sing better than you ever did brother. I mean that. You sound so good man! Tim love your bass and vocals too. Still playing fender and carvin respectively? (Me too) great work y'all. Would love to jam sometime... Steven
did anyone hear the instrumental " big wave " where Al plays guitar with Rodnie Bingenheimer and others and it is exellent ?
This was great, but where is the rest of the interview? I'd love to hear it all.
well here s what I know...timothy sang lead on a new version of "caroline no" a few years back...other than that...?????
Timothy did a song on the Beach Boys release album, "Stars and Bars" or "Stars and Stripes" that had country singers doing the lead vocals. There is a video here showing some of those sessions with Willie Nelson, Lori Morgan ,etc. Nice mix! ( I think Stars and Bars was a Neil Young album. LOL )

Fun to see these two together. kur-OCK?
Tim looks great for his age , jealous or what?!
Where and when was this video recorded?
🙌❤🎶🙌
Luv Al Jardine but can he take any longer to finish a thought?
It was the interviewer, not Al's deal there. He just tried to appease the jackass.
He's a story teller. I like his stories.
me too old age
@ Kevin Dunn - Ha ha, perfect!
Yeah, I know. I've noticed that before too.
;-)
Why does he sound like Jeff Goldblum
Ben Roley OMG! He DOES! 😀
Maybe because their voices have a similar timbre.
The man's name is Schmit, not Schmidt. He;'s only a member of the most popular American band ever, so I can see how easy the mistake is to make. Jesus.
Timothy B Schmit no D in his name
marisha4sure
marisha4sure 😀👍🏼
What is Timothy's relationship with Al? How do they know each other?
I should imagine they first met in the seventies when Eagles and The Beach Boys played concerts together.

(and he sang with Brian Wilson on a TV concert in 1998 for Wilson's Imagination LP, although Al wasn't involved in that LP or TV special)
14:25 - It's called synesthesia, Al. Look it up.
Timothy B. Schmit
THE Beach BOYS Al Jarinde Barin Wilson Dennis Wilson Mike Love
Tosin Oparinde Brian Wilson Carl Wilson Dennis Wilson Mike Love Al Jardine
For me The Beach Boys are Al, Blondie, Brian, Bruce, Carl, David, Dennis, Mike & Ricky.
:-)
Schmitt. No D in Timothy’s last name.
My sardine
In high school we called Al, Weaselman.
Maybe Dave had synesthesia?
they should have compressed this into 30 seconds
Why do you idiots even have to type anything. You waste good page space. :(
Sorry And.da...and da
He must have said "uhh" at least three thousand times. Was torture
Zzzzz.. are you still here?
OLD FARTS, WHO GOT BY
The words tool, bellend & moron will be chiseled into your headstone for all eternity.
you must be insane this is the best band in the world show how peoples taste in music is waned .
they had great voices but nothing else
yet here you sit with a shitty opinion and not much else
