It must have been really cool having the Beach Boys as neighbors.

The man was THERE when it happened! And still has the sharp mind to tell the story!
Very cool video ! Thank you for posting this for us all. Great memories ! David is an outstanding person and musician.
With or without a guitar, David Lee Marks is one of the most entertaining guys on the planet.
Really interesting background and history! Thanks for all the details!😊❤
David Marks is the man, He is a classic beach boy, He was the rhythm guitarist on the original classic hit songs that were released to the world, Very underrated guitarist.
When I was a little kid, my Dad took me to the grand opening of the Hawthorne & Artesia Wallach's store in Torrance. They had a flat bed truck trailer which was used as a stage by the featured band - The Beach Boys! Their set list included "Surfin Safari", "Surfer Girl" and "Long Tall Texan". Each Fender amp had one guitar and one mic plugged in - no PA yet - so Brian Wilson was singing through a Bassman! I was amazed by the quality of their harmonies! What year was that? 1961? 1962?
It was November 15, 1963 (a Friday evening). (The info is visible on the newspaper ad at the end of this video clip.) I was 12 years old.
DM mentions a free parking-lot concert the BBs did at the grand opening of Wallach's Music City on Hawthorne Blvd near Artesia. Still in elementary school, my buddies and I hitchhiked from our (parents') homes in Torrance to that Music City grand opening to see the BBs perform live (with Brian singing and playing electric bass). Little did we know that we were watching, and participating in, cultural history.
Great info ! So it was Gary Usher who rode his 457 Chevy and Brian recorded it. Theres another story where Gary tells about how he and Gary came up with "giddy-up giddy-up" while driving to a car parts store. Check out all the great Gary Usher specials on RUclips.
My dad's name is on that plaque, went to school with these guys.t.b.b..i miss Hawthorne.
The Beach Boys also spent a lot of time at Johnny's Place.....It still has great food.
Nice!! Thank You so much for posting this!

Brilliant!!
Dave is not only an outstanding musician, as a person he also seems like one cool dude. I would love to have the opportunity to meet him personally. And the way he describes Dennis Wilson him and Keith Moon the Who's drummer would have hit it off splendidly if they had the chance to get together! ❤😂
I feel like no one remembers David because he left so early and the Wilsons dad didn’t even stop him
@nataliarobinson. Some time ago, I saw an interview with David Marks with his mother. From what I remember, it sounded like murry WAS the reason David left the group. What a shame to lose such a great member.

I think that's my Corvair parked at the A&W. I had baby moon hub caps which were subsequently stolen. Thus no hubs on the car. We would cruise from the A&W to the Wich Stand on Slauson and back.
Ive been looking for Don Allred. He lived a block away & played gitar. He went into the sound buisness if your out there Don Im in Ridgecrest, Ca & will be at my 50th reunion.

327 is the engine you were thinking of David...
hearing davids stories about dennis makes me laugh. no wonder they called him dennis the menace when he was growing up
Great clip! What is the song playing at the beginning?
MY GIRLFRIEND'S LIVES DOWN 4 HOUSES AT 1:38!!!!!!!1 HOW AWESOME IS THAT!!!!!!
The Manson family robbed hardware store in that town
This is SO great... classic lo-fi Beach Boys history. Dave Marks rules. But never call him a former Beach Boy. Dave Marks IS a Beach Boy and will always be. Just sayin'...
@carlrudd,. Absolutely positively right.. Great video, Thank you David for the memories.
What is the song that plays at 6:39? And is it by the Beach Boys?
ten little Indian
It would have been a 348 Chevy.
I believe he meant a 1957 Chevy. The 348 wasn't available until 1958. In 1957 two v-eights available were a 265 & a 283 cubic inch engine.
I'm sorry, my mistake. Just listened again at time 5:20. It was a '62 Chevy, so you're right. It would have been a 348 cubic inch engine. That was also the first year of the 327 C.I. engine. 1962. Where were you in '62? As they say. All the best and may God bless.
Dave was first , he got duped by his own parents lol
