In earliest illustrations by Charles Addam, Morticia was seen as a sort of witch/clairvoyant type character. I like that this show expands on than rather than having them just be overly eccentric and macabre.
But even in the movies they mention ancestors who were burned as witches.
And the original tv show in the 60s showed Morticia & Grandma Addams both being sensitive to spirits & conducting seances in order to consult them. So yes, there is established lore that the 90s movies & this new series started with & built on, respecting the original instead of tossing it aside but adding their own new ideas on top. That's great world building by the writers.
I didn't ever watch any of the cartoon series, so I don't know how/if they brought up spirits & monsters being part of the Addams family world.

Jenna Ortega killed it as Wednesday. Literally perfect. My favorite version of Wednesday yet. Also the show in general is pretty great too. There’s definitely some things they could’ve done better but overall it was entertaining as hell. Can’t wait for the 2nd season!

Wednesday is a teenage girl. Sometimes teenagers rebel against their parents, even if they're alike and supportive.
The whole point of the Addams Family is that they're different from a typical family. The teen rebelling and the mother putting pressure on her contradicts with the whole point.

If you think that Addams aren't actually a very typical (if not, healthier than normal) family then you've missed a lot of the subtext.
Look past the aesthetics for a moment. Their sense of style is unusual but everything else is the perfect, model family. It's actually unusual how loving and supportive they are of one another.
So many of the issues and questions had, were already answered but were talked over, and then ironically "my wednesday didn't talk this much" was dropped in lol
I don't think Morgan understands what being goth is like.
You can't enjoy things, EVEN if you do enjoy something.

I actually started watching on a whim and binge watched the entire season in one day. It was so good! Jenna Ortega is phenomenal as well as the supporting characters. I knew it was going to be good when Wednesday dropped the piranhas in the pool and played Paint it Black on the cello!
Morgan is my favorite of the group, but her saltiness towards this wednesday and the show in general is a real downer. As a 33 year old, I love Ricci and the 90's Addams Family, but tbh Ortega did a better wednesday imo. On to the next episode...I guess..
I like both Wednesdays. To me 90s was a girl and now she's a teenager. She's going to have differences just like anyone growing up.

I had the same thoughts as Morgan at first. I thought Wednesday would be impressed by Bianca besting her, but as you said, teens are another level. I do think Wednesday might be impressed, but she's not used to losing as much. Considering a lot of her upbringing was around a brother who didn't compete, and let her dominate. When someone dominant like Bianca tips the scales, Wednesday's feathers will be a little ruffled. Just my thoughts, don't come for me. 😂

That's the whole point of episode 1, bud. You're absolutely gonna be judgmental cause it's the opening, it's what makes you decide if you want to continue or not. Plus, she's right about Wednesday being an unnecessary prick towards her parents. The Addams family was made to be the opposite of a normal family, her being rebellious contradicts that.
The Addams' like traditionally macabre or creepy people, but Wednesday specifically does not like nor respect bullies. That's why the series starts with her dumping piranhas into a pool to get revenge on bullies. And of course she talks more here than previous appearances: she's the protagonist of her own show named after her.

Burton's depiction of Wednesday is clearly going to differ from Sonnenfeld's. From her disposition, I think she's not "into" the macabre, she _is_ macabre.

I think the reason wednesday is more talkative in this series than the old wednesday is because new wednesday is highly self aware that shes different and that other humans sees her as different (negatively mostly). New wednesday is also very transactional person if u insult her she'll insult u back. Thats why you would see she always responds to insults and people trying to intimidate her.

I'd suggest taking the series for what it is. I'd advise not taking this series too seriously or think too much. And the show has to able to appeal to people who have no idea about the Addams history since 1938. This is based off the films of the 90's, and I'm sure certain things could not be done to legally differentiate the 2022 characters from the 1990's characters (like JJ Trek).
This series is not the Addams Family, of the 60's and 70's, where they existed in the Batman and Scooby Doo universe's (appearing in both series). This Wednesday Addams says things for shock value. I'm not a fan of the Addams Family at all (I couldn't stand any of the show's or cartoons from the 60's and 70's) and this is a different Addams Family. This is a Young Adult adjacent show and so relationships and emotions are centerpiece to placate and satisfy the audience. I think remembering that will help put the objectives of the series in a different perspective and perhaps allow some to relax and take the show for what it is: a new, different, and extended take on Wednesday and her life as a teen and a new Addams Family.

I think Netflix doesn't lie with those numbers becuase when I open youtube or instagram, like 95% of all content is just Wednesday or Jenna Ortega and that hype still didn't die after 3 weeks which is really insane because normaly people don't speak about new series after like 1-2 weeks, but Wednesday still lives. Look for example at end of The Walking Dead, it was supposed to be event of this year, but after few weeks, nobody speaks about that anymore.
I think Netflix should switch to more oldschool way of releasing shows with 1 episode every week, hype would survive even longer time and waiting for next season would be shorter, it's totaly crazy that you watch it in 2 days and then you have to wait 2 years.
Someone needs to chill. Is there really a need to compare with previous iterations or adaptations of characters? If they copy or do the same as previous ones, why the need to create a new show?
You gotta go into this knowing it’s a new adaptation….do not compare it to the 90’s movies or the old TV show…literally every character acts differently in a lot of ways than other versions…

It’s so interesting hearing your perspective on this show as viewers of the older Addams family content. I vaguely remember seeing some Addams family stuff when I was really young so I can guarantee the majority of Gen Z aren’t finding the same faults(?) in her and her family’s character design that you guys are.
For us it’s essentially introducing a new character as we barely have anything to reference it to (in terms of past media) so, again, I just found it so interesting listening to how you guys viewed everything vs how me and my friends did bc we didn’t seem to have any problems with portrayal of Wednesday or her family dynamic in the way that you guys did. Can’t wait for your reaction to the rest of the season.
Fun fact: This was filmed in Romania...they build the town from the ground up LOL

I don’t think we were meant to feel bad for Wednesday or side with her against her parents.
To me that was such an obvious “morticia and Gomez are cheesy and over the top but ultimately great parents and Wednesday like most teenagers is a sullen moody bitch.” Lol. She’s just a teenage girl teenage girl-Ing.
That was probably the most believable part for me. Although I think a bit of what you thought was her being rude wasn’t even intentional. She is not considering other people’s feelings but she’s also not trying to upset them. She just doesn’t give an eff.
Also its ep 1 and a coming of age series and the entire character is played with very little inflection. For her arc and growth to be perceptible I think she kind of has to start out this way.
I’m the same age as Christina Ricci, I grew up with her Wednesday but her Wednesday was still a kid. Personally I can totally see her growing into this 15 year old version.
I think if you try to let go of your preconceptions about “your Wednesday” and whether they’ve been completely faithful to the movies you might enjoy it more.
This Wednesday is far closer to the movie’s Wednesday than that Wednesday was to the original series Wednesday. It’s a reboot not a remake. It would probably suck if they tried to replicate the previous versions instead of making it their own.
It's amazing to me how you think you can judge a whole series, or even just the main character, based on a single episode, without having character development or a basic understanding of Goth teenage angst. Every time neon-hair said "My Wednesday....," I visibly cringed. Enjoy the story, and stop comparing it to other iterations. This is clearly aimed at Young Adults, and you apparently missed that boat by a decade or two.

Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday is suppose to be its own version of Wednesday while staying true to the character as well so it’s not suppose to be exactly like the one in the 90s

Tim Burton was an EP on the show and directed 4 of the episodes. The showrunners are Al Gough & Miles Millar the creators of Smallville.

I definitely enjoyed this show alot more than I thought I would. It doesn't take much research to see how big Wednesday has become, regardless of any conspiracy theories. And if you question 1 show/streaming service, you'd have to question all of them. Enjoy!
Hi Morgan, this is the first time I’ve ever watched this channel but I just wanted you to know that 1) love your hair! And 2) The Wednesday you’re imagining is very different to the one in this show. I think she and the show will grow on you, though, but it will only be enjoyable if you’re open minded!
This Wednesday talks more because she is the star of the show before it was just a one liner character you cant make a whole show about a one liner character , also this Wednesday is a teen all the other versions of her have been kids so she is bound to be different. I think Jenna Ortega does a truly phenomenal job.

This show is def Tim's redemption. It totally helps that he has all this input from other people and a fresh cast he's never worked with before. I think sometimes a creator needs to start over to find new inspiration. So glad this show was so fun. Love the art direction. The monster is the most Burton looking creature I've seen in years and this makes me so happy

I grew up watching the old Addams Family TV show from the 60’s. I didn’t really get into the 1990’s remake. But this Wednesday is awesome.

Wednesday feeling so antagonistic to her family is a similar storyline to the most recent Addams family animated movie that came out a year or two ago. In that one she felt so out place with the rest of the family that the whole plot revolves around her trying to leave the family behind to follow her own path.

They are called outcasts, so they are known but not accepted. On the outing to town, they were told not to perpetuate outcast stereotypes. So they are trying to fit in, but some can't control themselves, and the normies have a hard time trusting them. At least in the this show.

Glad that you're not just mindlessly praising this show like everyone else. I think Jenna Ortega plays Wednesday really well and the show in general has the right aesthetic, but when I was watching it I was ignoring the bad things deliberately because I want the show to be good. It's overall a good show, but it's like you have to separate the themes and aesthetics of Tim Burton from the Netflix-style algorithmic storytelling.
Keep watching, you will get the answers to all these questions.
I definitely bypassed this show when it first came out for maybe like a month I’m not sure but then I couldn’t sleep one night and saw tht the Wednesday show was pretty popular so I checked it out and was NOT disappointed absolutely loved it hope yall do too.
The rating are not fake because there's Nielsen's rating too and that's the same basically. And Netflix could do the same with every original show but they not doing it. And let's be honest, Wednesday the first show on Netflix that's still in the TOP 5 since it was released, most shows are in top 5 for like 2 or 3 weeks and that's all.
this show reminds me of legacies. school for witches, vampires and werewolves with a few other supernaturals. teen drama. adventure and mystery. nice replacement for a show that needed two more seasons.

I dont get why you guys keep comparing it to the old addams stuff. This is literally a modern take on it. We have snapchat instagram and so on in this show. Its not even in the same addams "universe" if we can say it like that. I could understand that you would compare it to the old ones if it was in the same timeline. But in this universe the old stuff dosent exist. Just take it for what it is. All that old comparing is stupid tbh

My wife's a teacher. She's known among the boys for being someone who likes superhero movies (yeah, sexiest, whatever) - which they think is very cool.
You can say "conspiracy" about Neflix, but with Wednesday it's been 8 year old girls coming up to my wife and asking if she watches Wednesday "it's really good, though a bit scary".
These are kids who never watch "things like this", so spread those extra views across the world and maybe it's true.

Btw comparing Ricci's portayl with Ortega's is just wrong. You can never expect the new version to be the same as the old version. If you want that, then go watch the 90's movies.

If you guys want reaction videos that only talk about the good parts of the show, then this channel ain't for you. Their reactions are genuine and not forced. They make jokes about it cause they're just watching a show. There's no harm done unlike your negative comments calling her judgmental, it's a REACTION channel. They're not just gonna watch blankly and not talk.
I think the issue is that she was able to bounce off her family in the movies. She wasn't the main focus. It would just cut to her doing or saying wild things. But now it's just constant one liners, so it can get old really quick. Overall though, I do think it's a fun show. It's hard to hate Time Burton's crazy campy-ness, and Jenna Ortega is obviously amazing in her role
