As you played this, all I could think of was how much it reminded me of Erbarm' dich mein, oh Herre Gott. I'm glad you mentioned it in your description.
It's a nice comparison. That Bach used it as a model is not unlikely, yet he is clearly the better composer.
I wish more composer have used this tune as a theme...
Actually: The organ literature is full of this melody "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" in choral prelude compositions.
