The Bach researcher Christoph Wolff have discovered that the original motet was not Kuhnau's work, he just copied it. It was composed by Lotti or Durante. I'd vote for Durante, similarities of style are definitely there. In this arrangement Bach put his B-A-C-H signature in alto part, the corresponding place in the original is a lot simpler.
Kuhnau, J. S. Bach's predessor as Thomaskantor was a highly talented and inventive composer. No wonder the Leipzig town Council conducted so exhaustive a search for his replacement.
