  • Ser Davos Seaworth confronts Melisandre after finding the toy he gave the little Princess. Jon Snow demands clarification on this matter from Melisandre, she admits everything to him.
After hearing her out Jon Snow decides Melisandre must leave the North.
When we had feasts, our family would sit up here and I'd sit down there.
Could have been worse, Jon Snow.
    You had a family.
    You had feasts.
    Aye, you're right.
    I was luckier than most.
    What is that? Tell him.
Tell him who it belonged to.
    The Princess Shireen.
Tell him what you did to her.
Tell him! We burned her at the stake.
    Why? The army was trapped.
    The horses were dying.
    - It was the only way.
    - You burned a little girl alive! I only do what my Lord commands.
If he commands you to burn children, your Lord is evil.
We are standing here because of him.
Jon Snow is alive because the Lord willed it.
I loved that girl like she was my own.
    She was good.
    She was kind.
And you killed her! So did her father.
    So did her mother.
Her own blood knew it was the only way.
The only way for what? They all died anyway.
You told everyone Stannis was the one.
You had him believing it, all of them fooled.
    - And you lied.
    - I didn't lie.
    I was wrong.
    Aye, you were wrong.
How many died because you were wrong? I ask your leave to execute this woman for murder.
    She admits to the crime.
Do you have anything to say for yourself? I've been ready to die for many years.
If the Lord was done with me, so be it, but he's not.
You've seen the Night King, Jon Snow.
You know the great war is still to come.
You know the army of the dead will be upon us soon.
And you know I can help you win that war.
    Ride south today.
If you return to the North, I'll have you hanged as a murderer.
If you ever come back this way, I will execute you myself.

Themaninthemask Liam Cunningham was amazing in this scene. I still get tears in my eyes from his emotional delivery. Shireen was all Davos had left, in terms of a surrogate family member, since he had lost his son at the Battle of Blackwater Bay.

So much respect for Davos in this scene. He doesn't just walk up and kill her like other characters might. He asks the king for justice. He shows restraint and honor, even when faced with a truly evil act. All three actors were fantastic in this scene.

Remember that he found out about her death before the battle, and decided to confront Melisandre after the battle. He could have told John about this before, but he knew that wasn't the best option.

What is great about Davos is that he respects Jon's decision of exile, even if he wanted an outright execution even in his grief he is wise enough to know that Jon can't execute Melissandre because Jon is owed a life so he has to pay the debt whether he wants to or not. I just wish Jon had said if children have to be burned alive so that a man can live I don't want that life, it would have been nice for Jon to acknowledge Davos's point that even though the red god has power it is not a price they want to pay.

the man was just a raging beast like I've never seen him before.
I hated shireens death man, n I still felt melisandre got off too fucking easy. shireen could have easily been hateful n insane but she stayed pure, innocent, and appreciative of what life she has, davos was the only father she ever needed.

Shireen, Hodor and Tommen were by far the most innocent. And they all died in pain, alone and because of someone else's orders. If that doesn't prove that war has no winners, nothing will.

    • @electricbayonet2
      @electricbayonet2 7 лет назад +147

      HA HA, NOPE
Well, it might've been crueler, except for the fact that the aforementioned father and mother had already visibly suffered for their choices. The latter hung herself. The former lapsed into a deep depression and then basically let himself get beheaded. It was basically a prolonged suicide.
But Davos' response? It was a hell of a lot more relevant than Melisandre's excuse. Stannis *did* love his daughter. He'd never have even considered what he did if he didn't believe that it was for a freaking divinely-mandated purpose, and even then it was visibly agonizing for him to carry out.
Point is, that line from Mellisandre? It's not cold or cruel. It's a desperate grab for a lifeline that Davos won't consider valid for a second, nor should he have.

To be true, it is said in the books that Jon is the son of Ned that resembles him the most, both by apearenc and personality. While Robb takes after his mother family, both by apearence and personality, Robb has both Mother and Father in his personality. And that's one of the reasons that Cat hated Jon more, because he was really like Ned (Jon is even the son with the most Starks caracterists, with Arya coming second, the rest of Cat and Ned sons are all with the Tully caracterists).

If you analyze it a little closer, it's not that he doesn't give a shit which religion is true, it's that he never trusted Melisandre to begin with. And the fact that someone that he doubted very much took away someone he loved very dearly, something fake vs something real is most likely what had him triggered like that.

Well...i don't think the Lord of Light commanded anyone to burn children. It required royal blood. Melisandre previously tried to sacrifice Gendry and perhaps would have tried to sacrifice Jon too when she tried to seduce him at the wall.
It was her and Stannis that chose Shireen as sacrifice after failing with anyone else.

This scene is really fascinating, because it almost seems like Melisandre is coming to a deeper realization about what she was wrong about. All this time, she's done horrible things with the absolute certainty that it was right, because the Lord of Light commanded it, because it was powerful and empowered her by proxy. Now, she's confronted by the raw grief of a man looking her in the eye and telling her something she had probably never heard before or even considered. Not that her god wasn't real, but rather that it wasn't a force of good. It's like after all the time she's been confronting those who doubted its power or existence, smugly and effortlessly proving the truth of her convictions with her magics and abilities, she's for the first time being confronted with the possibility that maybe this thing she swore herself to was something nefarious and demonic. And she has no defense against that accusation...

      @wd3185 2 года назад +95

That's an interesting interpretation. One way I always looked at it that the Lord of Light did not want Shireen's death and that the snow melting was actually his punishment for her death- Stannis marched his army straight to their deaths at the hands of the Boltons. The Lord of Light had to know they didn't stand a chance, so it makes no sense to melt the snow and usher their march as a reward for such a horrific sacrifice. Instead of retreating back to Castle Black (and then later coming back with the wildling reinforcements, although Stannis couldn't have known that at this time), Stannis went straight on and lost his life and his cause to a psychopathic butcher.

Not even the question of faith, but rather what she's done for that faith. How many people did she burn for Stannis, only to discover that she was wrong about him being the Lord of Light's champion? I would argue she doesn't question her religion, but how she's been arrogant enough to assume to know what the Lord of Light wants. It would be like if the Christian God turned out to be real, and said "yeah, no, the Bible was wrong about Jesus,." Christianity would still exist, but it would shatter every Christian to their core.

Lets say that in a similar scenario the exiled part would be upset about being exiled ride south and try to scheme a revenge,
Basicly being a passive leader that don't take sides or doesn't act harshly when nececcery which this scene is calls for a bad leader. Making a bad decition is always better then making none.

He has the mountain clans, the glovers, half of the umbers, the Mormonts, and likely than not, the manderlys. should he fall in battle, all these houses will be flayed alive, including fan favorite lyanna mormont. Therefore D&D changed the outcome regardless. Before he engages in battle with the Freys, he told justin massey to put shireen on the throne if he falls. For me, Liam’s strongest moment was the part where Melisandre confirms what she did. He’d already joined the dots - the burnt out pyre, and the stag he gave Shireen. But the moment she confirms it, any possibility he might’ve been wrong disappears, and the full magnitude finally hits him all over again. He had watched Melisandre’s burnings before, and he knew full well that it’s an absolutely horrible way to go. Now he couldn’t escape the knowledge that the sweet and innocent little girl he loved like a daughter had in fact suffered just that. And he conveyed the emotions so well.

Everybody jumps on the bandwagon and says that it has gone downhill since season 5, not even true. Season 6 was amazing : We had Ep2 "Home", Ep4 "Book of the stranger", Ep5 "The door", Ep9 "Battle of the bastards", Ep10 "The winds of winter". Anyone saying season 6 ins't great is an ungrateful person.
Season 5 also had its moments with the last 3 episodes. I would argue that S05E08 "Hardhome" was the best in the whole series. Weakest season but still very good.

@2:02 is when I started tearing up. Even in the books, Davos was a good person and was fond of Shireen so I feel for him so much. You can just imagine all the energy he's mustering to keep himself from strangling Melisandre right then and there. I personally would have considered gutting her on the spot, don't care if I get executed for unwarranted murder afterwards.

Melisandre doesn't need a trial. She was just an advisor to Stannis, and she gave a bad advice. Not out of cruelty or sadism, but out of her misinterpreted visions. She had no authority to burn Shireen and she had no powers to force Stannis to do so. I feel for Davos, but Shireen's death was ALL on Stannis.

after Melisandre defended herself and as Jon prepares to render his veredict, they should have inserted a shot of Davos in expectation. It was a decisive moment for him when he would learn what kind of leader jon was. If he would accept the help of dark magic like Stannis, or if he would denied it altogether. A brief tension that would improve an already very good scene.
