  • FlyWire Does a "Walk Around" Preflight of a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza. Before you go fly you should take a close look at the airplane to make sure its ready to go. Come along with us to check it out and learn some of the secrets of a Beechcraft Bonanza. You gotta do this, the next video we fly it!
    FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

    Suggestions: check for loose aileron counterweights by bumping top of wing with heel of hand listening for resonant vibration of loose counterweight, feel the bottom of brake calipers for brake fluid leaks, feel underneath the bottom screw of the rocker covers for oil leaks, examine the backside of the rear right engine baffle for black residue from excess wear of the starter armature contacts, wiggle the top of the gear doors at the forward hinge for over speed damage of the gear door, wrinkles on top or bottom of fixed portion of elevators, try full travel without any interference felt of elevators and ailerons ( control cables and counterweights inside the instrument panel are easily bothered by electrical cables dislodged or dangling in that area), wiggle the bottom of each exhaust pipe for cracking or insecure brackets. Insure No grease zerk cap on the trailing zerk on the uplock bearings (which would interfere with the up lock cable), feel for frayed uplock cable at the outboard end in wheel well, examine and confirm electrical fuzes in the engine compartment, wiggle the nose wheel damper for looseness and feel bottom of damper for fluid leak, wiggle the nose gear doors for looseness and look for unusual rubbing on gear doors and Same on the front edges of top engine cowling. Look at each fuel injector for crack in cylinder head(vulnerable to cracking). Just a few ideas for your walk around.

    From my Air Force days, we started the walk-around at the nose on the left side. When I inspected my Bonanza I did it the same way, and recall the first thing I checked was the prop, then the engine. However, you are much more knowledgeable about the details than I was (30+ years ago). Great presentation, Scott. I was lucky that whatever I might have overlooked didn’t kill me. I think it was due to my trust in the Air Force maintenance personnel to have done the job. When you maintain your own airplane, as I believe you do, you get to spend the time to really get to know it.

    One of things that I like to do while going around is to line up all the fasteners as I look down the wing or tail to make sure that no one is getting ahead of the other. A bad day when not all the fasteners get to the destination ahead of everyone else.

    Hi Scott!
    Few things, lowering the flaps and check play, check to see if the pitot tube heat is working (if you going IMC), what happened to the nose gear inspection? Tire pressure? Other than that, not bad.

    Three things. (1) The grease zerk fitting on your uplock roller bearing shaft (the one pointing aft) has a protective rubber cap installed, which I think might be a no-no as there’s insufficient clearance during gear transit for the cap ... permitting the cap to conflict with the up lock cable. I believe that cap may be prohibited. (2) You might consider adding a finger touch at the bottom of the brake caliper to feel for brake fluid leaks. (3) You might also consider testing the forward upper gear door hinge (by wiggling the upper forward portion of the gear door) for mechanical failure caused by gear extension above the max gear extension speed. What do you think?

    • @FlyWirescottperdue
      @FlyWirescottperdue  4 года назад +1

      Robin-
      Thanks for watching, it sounds like you watched pretty closely! I've been around Bonanzas for awhile now and have never heard anything about a cap being prohibited on the zerk fitting for the uplock roller. I can assure you there isn't a clearance problem if the uplock is installed correctly. For your number 2 point, if you suspect something, drawing your finger across the bottom of the caliper would be a good way to detect a leak, but I wouldn't do it unless i suspected something. For number 3, that sounds more like an annual inspection thing rather than part of a regular walk around- but if you share your airplane with others and you are worried about it- go for it.

    • @robincole5739
      @robincole5739 4 года назад +1

      FlyWire- scott perdue Wow, you do know a lot about Bonanzas. That’s why I watch your videos. You are deeply thoughtful revealed by your creatively constructed videos. I don’t know where I learned about the uplock roller zerk cap issue, maybe from the American Bonanza Society during their Inspection Clinic in Spencer, IA. I just don’t remember. You know, I learned some good things from your Deep Dive Walk Around. I once had a caliper leak, left a tiny pink puddle I almost overlooked ... and put it on my preflight walk around from then on. Costs one second per main gear, and just might catch an imminent brake failure early someday. Yes, I agree with you about the gear door attachment hinges. Like checking the cabin door hinges for deformation. Unlikely unless you suspect the door opening limit bracket failed to catch the door opening too far in the wind. We might not realize accumulated strain on the gear door finally led to metal fatigue on the hinge. Just shaking the gear door to catch hinge failure only takes half a second. Keep producing your videos. They are GREAT, my friend. Truly Outstanding.

      @@robincole5739 Robin- thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! I do preach that a 'walk around' includes looking under the airplane. If you notice something different then investigate it! I did replace the calipers on this A36 about 8 months ago because I noticed a few small drops of red fluid. I spend a lot of time during the annual looking for wear items. For owner/pilots who do not do their own maintenance I suggest that they spend some time cleaning the airplane--- top and bottom. this makes you get up close and personal with small details and the familiarization helps you find mx items before they become big! Keep Flying!

    Nice video. One small comment/correction. Your ailerons are aluminum not magnesium. Beech stopped using magnesium on ailerons with the N35 as far as I know and certainly all 36 models would have come from factory with aluminum ailerons.

    • @FlyWirescottperdue
      @FlyWirescottperdue  5 лет назад

      Bart- Thanks. I've heard that Beech stopped doing Mag Ailerons mid-N35 production. The trouble with that is I've never seen anything 'official', plus I had a P35 that definitely had Mag ailerons. But you're probably right that the 36's came with Aluminum ailerons. Just don't bead blast them to find out. Saw a Baron in repaint that was stripped with bead blasting. Very ugly results, un-airworthy for sure.

    Wish the aircraft I pre-flight looked like your nice clean baby. The aircraft I pre-flight are abused rental aircraft. I find a lot of issues with them. Had one that had no oil indicted on the dip stick. One with a nose wheel with a bald tire with cord showing, Strut that needs to be charged, Engine Coul lock nut loose. Lights not working, Flap stiff, Radio not working, Attitude indicator not working properly, Bad right mag, and so on. I refused to fly the airplane many times. Also, the engine compartment and the rest sure does not look clean like your airplane. Kinda scary to rent aircraft.
